LR 1.4 Putting Text in/on a Photo?

Somehow this was working pretty well when I was working yesterday, but today it seems to have disappeared.
Any ideas which option or menu or screen or anywhere I can find this again?

(ps--Does Photoshop make this easier to edit and create with? I find LR very limited.)

1) I went searching last night and was able to turn up a list of keyboard shortcuts, which included the 1,2,0 options. That does work to zoom in and out, although of course it's not "infinite" zooming like in iPhoto 2 (where you could click a zoom arrow in or out as many times as you wanted to). It's something, but I guess I'm just surprised that by iPhoto 7 it's not better than iPhoto 2 instead of more limited.
That is a work around but not a solution
2) I have not deleted preferences. I understood you to have said that since I've just started using this computer (it was new) and had not changed the preferences, that they couldn't be the culprit; perhaps I misunderstood though.
What I said was
quit iPhoto and delete your iPhoto preference file - "your username" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist - launch iPhoto and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it
1 - quit iPhoto
2 - delete the preference file ( "your username" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist)
3 - launch iPhoto -- (up to this point nothing was conditioned on any thing)
4 - reset any personal preferences you have changed (If you have changed none then this conditional statement, the first one - none of the previous directions were conditioned on anything, does not apply to you)
5 - and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it ( again a conditional statement and if you have not changed the location of the iPhoto library this does not apply either
So.... does everyone else have a zoom slider in iPhoto 7.1.5?

Putting Text over a video is not working

O.K. I follow the instructions on putting text over a video (for iMovie 11), but every time I do this all I see is a black screen with the text in it. I can't get the video to show up when I preview/play the video. I have the same problem when trying to use the green screen feature as well. Is there a setting or something that I need to change in iMovie? If so what/where is it, because I am at my "witts end" trying to find it?

I would suggest trashing the iMovie Preferences file. Instructions are here. (You should not need to trash the iApps preferences, just the iMovie one.)

There's something wrong with your Photoshop install.

Aperture really isn't designed to put general text on an image.You could cobble something together using the Book interface but I don't think it would really be a suitable solution.
You'll need to look into using a plugin, BorderFX is a free plugin that many users her (including myself) have used. It does what you are looking for and works well.

The easiest way is to keep Textedit in the Dock and drag the .cue file(s) to the Dock icon.
You can also create an Automator Service:
Open Automator
Select: Service
Select Service receives selected [files or folders] in [Finder]
and:
Then select one or more .cue file, right click (or Control-click) on the selection to display the contextual menu. Scroll to the bottom of the contextual menu and select Services -> (what you named the Service).

There are different templates for iPhoto books and they differ from version of iPhoto to iPhoto, so explore the other options.

Best go to the Expert workspace so that you can see what is going on. If you need to use the Quick workspace, then I will point to those directions next.

Move the Timeline Indicator to where you want the Title placed
Go to Text Menu/New Text/Default Text and click on Default Text
When you do the Titler will open, displaying its Text (opened), Styles, Animation, and Shapes sections.
At the same time, the title will be placed on Video Track 2 at the location of the Timeline Indicator on the Timeline.
When you are finished creating the Title, you have click the "Done" arrows, and the Title is closed, you can always open the Title for more edits in the Titler by double clicking the Title on the Timeline Video 2.
Please review the Creating Titles details in the Adobe document. If you run into any difficulties, please post what they are and we will work through them with you.

You'll need an external editor for that:
In order of price here are some suggestions:
Seashore (free)
The Gimp (free)
Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
Acorn ($50 approx)
Pixelmator ($50 approx)
Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Is there a way to put text in the solder mask layer?
When I try to do so (select solder mask top or bottom/place/graphic/text), the text button is grayed out.
I'm using Ultiboard V10.01
I'd like not to add an extra silkscreen, for the few letters that nee to be placed in a new layout....
this way, the board will be a little cheaper...

You can create a new document (»Background Contents« set to »Transparent«), use the Type Tool (T) to create text and then save in a format that supports layers like psd, psb, tif.
If the receiving application can’t handle those png24 is another option.

Putting text in a shape vs in a text box on top of a shape

I want to put text in a shape (eg a rectangle). You can put text directly in the shape, or you can put text in a text box on top of the shape. I am interested in the pros and cons of these two methods.
It seems to me that putting it directly in the shape is better (if you are going to fill the shape with text). I don't see that using a text box adds any functionality.
Any thoughts?

Put the text directly into the shape. Anyway, putting a text box into a shape does not work, I don't think. You can place shapes within shapes, but not text boxes.

Putting text on top of a custom shape

If I put text on top of a custom shape I've added, the text doesn't show. I know it's there because if I change the opacity of the "shape" I can see the text is in fact there. How do I force the text to be on top of the customer shape? I'm using the shape as a "thought bubble" so one would think this is a common thing to do.

It's probably not because of the shape. First of all check your color square to be sure the text isn't the same color as the shape. Also, you may need to make text very much larger in PSE than you normally would, because text size is dependent on the resolution of the image. A high resolution image can need really big text before you can easily see it. Don't be afraid to type in a much larger number than is available in the pulldown menu.
