LR 2.6 deleted 23,000 pictures - HELP!!!

Lightroom deletes 23,000 pictures in 2 seconds.  Can you give me any pointers on how to get them back?
I've never had a problem before and this morning like a shot of lightning, while switching back and forth between an archive catalog and this active catalog, now my picture are all coming up with those little ? in the corners telling me it cannot find the images. I know I exported one image from the catalog to Flickr using Friedl's  exporter, pressed the cancel button halfway through the export, switched  to a different catalog and when I came back to this catalog, everything was gone.
The LR catalog is fine, but poking around on my HD revealed that the folder structure for the images is completely gone.  Nothing shows up in the recycle bin, but Windows still shows these 300 GB of files as being used so I'm sure they are still out there somewhere.  I tried an unerase utility to see if a simple restore was possible, but I don't see the top level folder anywhere.  I have been very careful to not mess around too much as I don't want to ruin my chance of recovery.  Windows has not done a check disk on this drive yet,
For reference, Win XP 64 bit with LR 2.6 64 bit, and a very active catalog. Files are backed up every 2 weeks, but it will be a very nasty job to restore everything.  As luck would have it, a backup was due to run, so my restore will be 2 weeks out of date on this very active catalog.  Only the last 6 months of pictures is on this computer.
My 500 gig drive is partitioned as follows.
Drive c:Windows partition 50 gig
Drive d: All data including pictures here 450 gig  (300 gigs of pictures are nowhere to be found but the space is still showing as used)
My Pictures
   Pictures 2010
       Jan
          Jan 2 2010 Concert Shoot
          Jan 3 2010 Smith Wedding
       Feb
       Mar
       etc.....

I just read the thread now, but even just reading the original post, I wasn't worried for you, because LR can't delete 23,000 files in a few seconds.  It would take a much longer time to do that.  There was obviously just a catalog shift within Windows and outside of LR, so that all your files were still there in a new folder location. Remember that LR is at heart, in terms of photo management, a database program consisting of pointers that it records, stores and uses to locate your files.  (iTunes works in a similar way with .mp3 and other music and video files.)  If you use LR to move a file, LR should reset its pointer to the new location.  If you use Windows to move the file, LR's pointer is now incorrect and it can't find the image any longer.  The solution, as you found, is to restore the file to the location where Lightroom knew it last was.
Nonetheless, you are wise to treat this incident as you did, as a warning shot across the bow, and install real-time backup since your photo files are important to you.  Keep checking to make sure the backups are working as you expect. The only thing worse than not having backups is having a backup system that lets you down when you need it most.

I have an iMac ...I would like to delete 70,000 pictures from my iphoto 11 trash but it kept crashing ...what to do?
    Thank you & ShineOn!

Best guess on this point, though my suggestions may be shot down to the very last ...
If Terence Devlin says I am an idiot, then I will have learned somwthing from his counter-points.
Your HDD may be running low on free space, at least enough free space to process 70K photos in a single shot (an entire library, all associated as one).
You need to see how much free space vs total disk capacity is left.
Then check the size of the files you are trying to "empty trach".  If those two numbers are too close, you may need to try some gymnastics.
If you have not used CarbonCopyClone, you may want to get an external drive that is 2x your internal drive.  If you have room enough, download (for free) CarbonCopyClone or SuperDuper (your call, both equally good).  Make a clone of yuor drive onto this external single-partition drive, which should have more than enough free space without shutting down.  You do this by booting holding the "option key" so that all operations are now on the external disk.
Then you can clone this external clone back with an empty trash.  Then be more careful about how large the "trash gets", by disassociating bulks such as iPhoto.
This may be an overly dramatic approach and there may be ther ways to bypass "empty trash" usage of system resources.   But nothing is destructive on your original disk until the last step of cloning back, and you have a new way of making an "emergency crash" bootable disk if even that does not work.  I DO run with a CCC external bootable, by the way, so the "if nothing else" effect has value.

  • My ipod touch displays a loading symbol and then goes to the apple logo and then repeats the process. I cant turn it on or off and has been this way for the past 24 hours. I have an 8GB 4th Gen and have over 7,000 pictures, but cant delete. help

My ipod has over 7,000 pictures and there are 5,00 i could easily delete but it wont let me do anything! it just has a loading symbol that converts into an apple logo and then back again. Ive tried pressing down the home and sleep/wake button down at the same time for 10 seconds. The apple logo does appear, but it goes back to the loading symbol or a white screen. Its been like this for 24 hours and is unresponsive. Please help.

    - Connect the iPod to the computer and see if iTunes sees it. If it sees it try to get the photos off the iPod.
    - Next let the battery fully drain. It will likely take days. After charging for at least an hour try again
    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

Well, if you have not backed them up, they are gone.
Next time, when you have important material in only one place, back it up.

  • When I connect my iPhone (5s) to my computer it says that it's storage is full and that I have over 4,000 pictures even though I have deleted all of them. It won't allow me to add music or anything else either because it says my phone is full.

When I connect my iPhone (5s) to my computer it says that it's storage is full and that I have over 4,000 pictures even though I have deleted all of them. It won't allow me to add music or anything else either because it says my phone is full. I have restarted my phone and the computer multiple times, but it still tells me that my phone is full.

iPod touches or any iDevices from Apple sync only to one computer. If you sync to a different computer, all your music will be replace with the music from the new computer's iTunes. If the music were purchased from iTunes, you can re-download them again otherwise the music on iPod touch will be deleted. Do you have iTunes backup?

  • I'm trying to download netflix aand it keeps telling me not emough space to delete videos or pictures but i have no videos and have only 60 pictures. any help?

I'm trying to download netflixs to my ipad but it keeps telling me to delete videos or pictures. I have no videos and have 60 pictures. I need some help.

What may be taking up your iPad's memory may be not photos or videos, but rather music and apps. Music itself should not be that much of a problem but if you have a very large library it will obviously take lots of space. Your iPad tells you to delete photos or videos because you can delete them from the iPad directly, but you cannot delete music until you sync to iTunes. You may also want to try deleting some apps such as games; these usually take lots of space (up to 1GB each). These apps will sync back to your iPad when you have access to a computer once you have freed up enough memory on your iPad.
    Hope this helps.

  • I downloaded the new iphoto to my macbook pro. Now when I open it, there is a message telling me that "your photo library is damaged or unreadable and cannot be opened. Please restore from a backup." What do I do I had 16,000 pictures.....PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Try download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can Anyone help me on how to delete imported album/pictures from my ipad?

Can Anyone help me on how to delete imported album/pictures from my ipad? I imported them from my camera to ipad. I already connected it to my itunes but i cant seem to delete the imported ones. Thanks!!

If you connect your iPad to your computer via USB, when it opens on the left hand side of the iTunes screen, click it once to open it.  Then click on the Photos tab and uncheck the photos/albums you had synced to your iPad, which you no longer wish to keep there.  Then click Apply on the lower right hand side and the photos will be removed.

  • IPhoto 6.0- Trying to Delete unwanted duplicate photos:::: Help???

Recently, I downloaded all my photos from my desktop to an external hard drive in an effort to bring them to my MacBook. The problem is that I had about 5,000 pictures and when I downloaded them and know on the MacBook I have 20,000. Some how, many of the photos were duplicated and even triplicated (if that's a word- Ha Ha). In any event, I'm wondering if there is a way to have iPhoto sort out all the duplicates so I can delete them.... I have searched help to no avail and can't find any easy solution. Not even sure if it's possible, but it would beat the alternative of going through and deleting one by one. One last thing....the duplicates are not even next to the original. They are sorted all over the place. They also have the same photo #. Can anyone help?

Just throw what you have done away and start over
Connect your external HD to your old computer and drag the iPhoto library form the picture folder (default location) to the EHD, connect the EHD to your new computer and drag the iPhoto library on the new machine to the desktop and drag the old iPhoto library from the EHD intact as a single entity to the pictures folder of the new Mac and launching iPhoto on the new machine - there is no importing involved
Once you have tested and are happy with the iPhoto library on the new computer trash the iPhoto library you drug to the desktop

  • I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be back

I have deleted hundreds of pictures, I've deleted apps, deleted emails and texts, and I've turned off and deleted backups of apps on icloud and it is still telling me that there is not enough icloud storage available for my phone to be backed up. I am supposed to do this before I go to the Apple store today to get my phone fixed. Can someone please help me? I have done almost everything.

This article explains ways to reduce your iCloud storage: Managing your iCloud storage.  In addition to what's mentioned in the article, if you have lots of photos and videos attached to your text messages, these are all included in your iCloud backup and deleting them can sometimes significantly reduce the size of your backup.
If worse comes to worse, back up your phone to your computer rather than iCloud.  To do this, connect it to your computer, open iTunes and go to File>Devices>Back Up and to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  This can be used to restore your data when you get your phone back.  (In fact, it's faster because you don't have to download the data from iCloud.)

  • My iPhone 4 refuses to save pictures and at some instances, delete my existing pictures. I take a picture, and then go to camera roll and look, but it doesn't show up. The same thing happens when I try to screenshot things; it won't save.

My iPhone 4 is severely making me mad. It won't save any pictures I take. I will take the picture, then go to view it in the Camera Roll, and it just won't be there. The same thing occurs when screen shotting things on my iPhone. Some times it won't even let me delete the existing pictures I had on my phone before this all happened. I will click delelte, then it will pause, and eventually close me out of the photos app. However, when I go to settings, it says I have 440MB of pictures on here somewhere. But I can oly see 3 pictures in the camera roll. Also, it says in the camera roll app that it is 'Restoring...' then just sits and loads and won't restore anything at all. HELP ME PLEASE. I have iOS 7.1 currently installed.

Have you Tried Clearing the The Cache in the Camera or Gallery in your Applications Area.. Go to Settings--> Applications--> Manage Applications--> Select All--> Clear the Cache in Both the Camera & Gallery Clearing the Data however might Clear you Pictures in your Gallery but if your Ok with it Give it a Shot,

I believe that is not exactly correct.
You get two options - restore as new, or restore from your backup.  You chose to restore from your backup, which is very different from "restoring your apps."
Try it again.  This time, restore as new, and then manually add your apps back in by redownloading them one at a time.

  • I can not open i photo. it needs a library that i can use to import photos but i created already books, slide shows and had over 6.000 pictures in the librarybut i can

i photo does not open. It says i photo needs a photo library but I had more that 6.000 pictures in my library. I created already books and slide shows. it seems everthing is gone.
    I get as reply
    - select a library from list -- but no list
    or
    - find another library
    or
    - create a new one and import photos later
any chance te recuperate  or  find all I had in i photo

You can try and recover deleted files from your Mac with an app like File Salvage
    To create a new Library:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'.By default it goes in your Pictures Folder.
To save book etc that you have created you need to back up your Library.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
Also, please don't type in block capitals. They are hard to read and on the forum it looks like you'e shouting at everybody.
