LR 3.2 - Local adjustment brush and heal/clone tool broken

Hi,
After installing LR 3.2, the first thing I noticed is that it is much slower than the previous version (using XP Pro + 3GB memory and a speedy processor).
But the most terrible novelty of this version is that the Adjustment Brush is going berserk after a while:
It first slows down to a crawl, so slow that it's almost impossible to work with.
While working with it after a while, it starts to show random rectangular areas that are copies of other areas of the image that have nothing to do with the area I'm working on. This happens after a brush stroke. The Undo command makes these rectangular "patches" disappear.
From time to time, the whole image is flipped upside down (You can't believe it? Neither could I).
Eventually, afte a brush stroke, the sandclock mouse cursor is displayed and the program freezes (at this time it can be using over 1 GB of memory although I'm working on a single, standard EOS 5D image). The only way to stop this madness is to kill the process.
The Heal/Clone tool also shows a similar misbehavior.
I didn't have these problems with the previous version.

Are you looking for help? If so then it would really useful if you provided some information on hardware, OS and what exactly are you doing when the system freezes. Also worth noting that applications very rarely (even badly coded apps) cause the hardware to crash. System crashes are more often than not due to bad device drivers or bad hardware that an application may expose.
I'm a software professional since PCs exist. I have enough experience to identify software problems when they appear. At least, I'm able to determine whether I have a hardware problem or if the software I'm using (or writing) is buggy. I have read many reports, many threads, many advice about these performance issues. I'm pretty sure that the problem is LR. I repeat: I do not have any performance issue when editing images in Bibble 5, Photoshop or DxO Optics Pro. BB5 is at least an order of magnitude faster than LR when editing images. When I use the Adjustment Brush in Camera Raw, there's absolutely no problem. My hardware is powerful enough and my installation is pretty clean (could it be powerful enough in Camera Raw and not in LR?). My OS is very stable. I have not seen a BSOD since years and all my applications are running flawlessly on this system (which includes image editing applications, software development tools, and many others...).
Users having various and very powerful systems (PC or Mac) are reporting the very same problems. Like Bruce, I'm convinced that this is not a hardware resource problem. We didn't have these problems with LR2 and LR3 was supposed to enhance performances. Version after version, it has now become unusable for me.
Drawing the conclusion that since many users don't have any performance issues, the problem must be on the user's side would be erroneous. The bug is in LR and may or may not appear depending on the circumstances. Any developer knows that a bug may or may not hit a given user depending on how she uses the software. I admit that these bugs are hard to fix. But LR has to be fixed, no doubt.
I profoundly regret that Adobe do not acknowledge this.

  • Local Adjustment Brush and Gradient Tools not working in LR3.2

I am not sure what i did, but those tool have stopped working.  I don't know how i manged to do this or if it is a bug, but i noticed that the color palette is gone from the setting tab for these two tools.  If you look on the right tab of the screen shot, you can see that where the colour box used to be, there's nothing.  Not even the box with an "x."  If i try and use either tool, the whole frame just turns pure grey.  Any thoguths or Help would be much appreciated.  I'm hoping that maybe i accidentally clicked or hit a key i didn't notice.
    Thanks!

  • Wacom Tablet Pen Pressure stops working in Photoshop after using Lightroom Local Adjustment Brush

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a problem with my Intuos Pro Medium (driver 6.3.9w3 on Windows 8.1)
I am using Lighroom 5.6 and Photoshop CC 2014.
I an get the pen pressure to work in Photoshop without any problem. However, if I go into Lightroom and use the Local Adjustment Brush and then transfer the photo into Photoshop (Right Click Edit In => Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2014 CC) then the pen pressure stops working in Photoshop.
Really frustrating... The only workaround is to close both Photoshop and Lightroom, then reopen Photoshop, then usually the Pen pressure feature starts working again.
Has anyone experienced this before or has any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Guillaume

Your tablet driver isn't reporting pressure correctly.
The knockoff tablet drivers usually need to be revised for each new version of Photoshop (and we have no idea why).
Contact your tablet maker to see if they have updated drivers to fix their bugs.

  • My Local Adjustment Brushes no longer recognized after LR 4.3 update

After running 4.3 update, my local adjsutment brushes are no longer recognized and appearing in the Lightroom GUI.  They are all still located under 'Lightroom' folder --> 'Local Adjustment Brushes' folder (nothing has changed and I see all files are still there in Finder), but no matter how many times I've restarted LR, they are not showing up in the GUI.
    Please advise ASAP!!  Thank you

It's not clear from your initial problem description, but are you talking about local adjustment presets that you have created yourself (i.e. user presets), or are you talking about the standard presets supplied by Lightroom (Burn, Dodge, Soften Skin, etc)?
If it's the latter, go to Preferences>Presets Tab and click on "Restore Local Adjustment Presets".

  • Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file

Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file
I shoot everything on location and make minor edits while on location. My location edits usually transfer with the XMP file. I used the new local adjustment tool while on location, however when I got back to my main workstation and transferred the images the local adjustments were not there. Can this be fixed somehow, as it would be nice to only make those edits only once? I do not use as a catalog program, once the job is complete it is removed from the lightroom catalog so again those local adjustments are gone.
    Thanks
    Mark

The problem may be and I am only guessing here that because no other program
currently supports the adjustment brush options that that information is not
added to XMP file. Not even Photoshop or ACR supports that as of yet. Though
I honestly would have expected that information to be there anyways it would
just be ignored by programs that don't know what to do with (basically
    everything but LR 2.0).
Have you tried using DNG files. From what I understand an XMP file it not
needed as the information that is normally in a XMP file in kept inside of
the DNG file. This maybe another reason to go with the DNG format.
    Good luck.

  • Local Adjustment Brush - create a line

    Hey everyone,
I thought that in Lightroom 2, you could use the local adjustment brush, click on an area, then hold down ctrl key, click another area, and a line would be drawn between the two points.  How do you do it in Lightroom 3?  Am I mistaking this in Lightroom 2?  I'm pretty sure I used it alot for a while and can't figure it out now.
    Thanks ahead of time,
    Colby

Not in Lightroom. Applying changes to a selection is sort of the domain of a pixel editor.

  • Strange behavior of LR3 local adjustment brush

Lately, it seems that LR3 (Mac) is acting strange when doing local adjustments. When using the adjustment's brush, the area being "painted on", i.e., adjustments, a square area centered on the cursor position is shaded a bit darker than the area not covered by the brush. What gives?

I have had similar problems with 3.2 and also (while doing local adjustments)
    - rectangular areas of the image suddenly duplicated elsewhere in the image
    - whole image flipped upside down while painting with the local adjustment brush
Using Undo always put back the image in a normal state (the state it was before starting to apply the last local adjustment).
I have not seen this in 3.3 (final release) until now but I didn't use it much since it has been made available.
NB: (before someone asks) Yes, I do have the latest NVidia driver installed.

  • How to change local adjustment brush size when unselecting ?

Perhaps a stupid beginners question but i cannot seem to find this one..
Using the local adjustment brush i can change the size of the brush using the [ and ] brackets
However.. when i make a small error and want to erase brushed-area by using the ALT key then the brush size seems to be fixed to one size ???

    Erwin,
As they say, there are lots of ways to skin a cat.
Erase mode uses a different setting for the brush size. You can adjust it, but not with the brackets while the Alt key is held down. With the Alt held down, you can still move the size slider in the brush panel with the mouse.
I can't speak for Macs, but on Windows, my scroll wheel works to change the size of the brush, whether the alt key is pressed or not.
If that won't work for you, you can click on the "Erase" text button in the brush panel and then use the bracket keys to change sizes. You'll be in erase mode even without holding down the Alt key. In fact, in that mode, holding the Alt key puts you back in "paint" mode.

  • Sharing custom preset local adjustment brushes between 2 computers?

As I start to do more and more of my work in either Lightroom 2.2 or ACR, I'm creating "preset" local adjustment brushes.
I run on a desktop and a lap top.
Is there a way to copy and move the new preset brushes from one computer to another?
Asked another way, where does ACR and/or Lightroom store these things on a Mac so that I can copy from one and move to another?
    Thanks.
    Steve

ACR Presets and Settings etc. are stored in:
    Users/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/
You can copy them to another computer and store them in the equivalent place.

  • Local Adjustment Brush - can't choose color

When I choose to add color to a local adjustment brush, there is a small square on the color spectrum but I cannot select anything as my eye dropper has disappeared.  How do I get it back?  I am able to choose a color from the swatch above but not within the color spectrum below.
    I appreciate any help.
    Lightroom3

I'm using Windows 7 and my monitor drives are up to date (or at least as recently as last week I checked).  I think it is a setting somewhere.  I can still choose a color but have to do it with the arrow keys.

  • Local Adjustment Brush Sliders Are Gone

I did a reinstall, repair actually of LR 2.6 due to blue screen errors (which turned out not to be LR related) and now my local adjustment brush sliders are gone! I've got the old style, one slider with the other controls being + & - buttons. I've got no clue what else is gone but I would like my sliders back.
What happened? LR says it's the most current version.

    Jim,
In the upper right corner of the brush panel is a little whte buttton. It is on the same line as "adjustment:".
Click that button to reveal your sliders

  • HELP! Lightroom Crashes Only with Adjustment Brush and only when using HDMI output!

This is very frustrating. I use my Acer N56V laptop to teach Lightroom workshops. I use a 32 inch television as a display. When I have my laptop attached with an HDMI cable and try to use Lightroom's adjustment brush, it crashes. Either the screen and computer just shuts down or I get the Blue Screen of Death. I can do anything else! I can edit in Photoshop, do anything else in Lightroom or even Silver EFX Pro. I can even click on the adjustment brush. But the minute the brush hits the photo (and not before), the computer crashes. If I don't have it attached to the HDMI or if I use a Serial cable, no issues. It's only the adjustment brush and only the HDMI output.
I called Adobe and they said it was because my onboard video card was primary and not the Nvidia. I called Acer and they said it's auto detect. I also tried making the Nvidia card primary and it still happened. Any ideas???

You have switched the overlay mask to always show. Fortunately, it's easy fixed i.e. tap the O key. Shift+O will cycle the overlay through various colours
Other Adjustment Brush and Graduate Filter shortcuts and modifiers are listed them below:
    Open Adjustment Brush - K
    Open Gradient Tool - M
    Show/hide Pin - H
    Always Show - Shift + Cmd/Ctrl+H
    Show Selected/Never Show - Shift+H
To increase Amount - Right Arrow
To decrease Amount - Left Arrow
    To increase/decrease brush size -  ] / [
    To increase/decrease feather - Shift+] / Shift+[
Set Flow Amount - Number Keys
To commit  and/or start new a brush stroke or gradient - Enter / Return
To delete the selected pin - Delete
Holding down - Alt/Option key activates erase mode
    Toggle Auto Mask On/Off - A
Pressing O toggles on/off the overlay
Shift+O cylces through alternative colours for overlay
To constrain gradient to vertical/horizontal  - hold down Shift plus drag
To invert the gradient - '
To scale from center - Alt/Option plus drag

  • Photoshop: values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard

I posted this in answer to another thread, but decided that it may be helpful to some Photoshop users if it had its own topic:
The following is a technote copied from Adobe's forums, regarding the performance of several menus for key tool settings in Photoshop CS3 running in Leopard:
*Changing values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard*
    *Kirsten Harris - 08:58pm Nov 15, 2007 Pacific*
Adobe and Apple are working closely to provide a fix to a known issue running Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended on Mac OS X Leopard (v10.5.1). Currently, when you enter values in numerical fields to set sizes for the brush, crop, marquee, lasso, type, and other Photoshop CS3 tools, those values revert to previously entered values when you try to apply them.
    # While we have identified workarounds for some of the affected tools, this issue prevents people from working as precisely and intuitively as they expect. Providing a fix to customers is a top priority. Please note the following: The fix will be provided through an update to Mac OS X Leopard. Consequently, it is not part of the Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) update.
    # Apple is collaborating closely with us to get this fix incorporated into a Mac OS X Leopard update. No public schedule is available at this time, but both companies understand the urgency of this fix.
    # As soon as the appropriate update to Mac OS X Leopard is available, we will immediately alert our Photoshop users.
Affected Photoshop CS3 tools: Art History tool, Blur tool, Brush tool, Burn tool, Color Replacement tool, Clone tools (all), Crop tool, Dodge tool, Eraser tools (all), Gradient tool, Healing tools (all), History tool, Lasso tools (all), Line tool, Magic Wand tool, Marquee tools (all), Paint Bucket tool, Pencil tool, Polygon tool, Quick Selection tool, Red Eye tool, Rounded Rectangle tool, Sharpen tool, Smudge tool, Sponge tool, Slice tool, Type tool
Workaround for tools with sliders: Instead of typing in a number, use the sliders to change the value.
Workaround for tools with pop-up menus: Enter a value for the size but don’t press Return/Enter to apply the value. Instead, choose it from the top of the Size pop-up menu to commit it.
Workaround for tools which do not have sliders or pop-up menus: For certain tools, such as the Line tool, you may want to set up presets that you can load to set common sizes. Alternatively, you can restart Photoshop CS3 to clear the problem. You will then be able to enter values again. However, the issue typically re-surfaces quickly.
If additional details come to light, our tech doc Values in numerical fields in Photoshop CS3 revert to the previous value in Mac OS X v10.5.1 (Leopard) will be updated.

Well, that's interesting! Here I thought the problem with my CS1 was just that it was too old, running in Rosetta and all, and would be fixed when I get my Xmas treat of CS3. Wonder if that means when the fix comes from Apple it will also fix the same problem in CS1? Of course, by then I'll probably have CS3.... Thanks for posting this, I would have been mighty annoyed to have plonked down my 200 bucks only to discover that I had the same bugs.
