LR 3.5 is Really Running Too Slowly! Help

Hello,
I have been using LR for some time now, and I have loved using it in the past.  Currently I have moved to Camera Raw to get my work done because LR takes entirely too long to load and process updates.  I'm sure that I there is something that I must be missing, but I'm not sure what it is.  I am working with a very large catelog. Do I need to use multiple smaller catelogs?  That would seem to be a bit incoveinient, but I would like to take full advantage of the benifits of LR if I can just get it to respond faster.  Please let me know what I am missing here.  Thanks!

The first think you already said: you have a very large catalog.
Maybe it's not the Main reason, but could be...
What's your machine comfiguration?
Have experinced this same issue, with new or smaller catalogs?
Can you try and tell us?
Your images are storaged at the main HDD or in a separeated one?
One thing you can try is Optimizing and make a Integrity Check of your catalog.it can increase some performance.

  • Iphoto is running too slowly.

My iphoto is running too slowly. I think I have too many pictures. I do not want an editing program. Is iphoto library manager what I need to? I have read so  many of the questions here but can't find one that fits my problem. Will getting the library manage help? Do I delete photos from iphoto then? Is the trial version ok or do I have to pay the $30?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto opens?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
what do you mean by "too slowly"?

  • A space monitering script is running too slowly !! How can I make it faster

    Hi. all.
The following db space monitering script is really taking too much time.
The script is from a certain db monitering solution.
It is running on a 30-minute regular basis, and one of top sqls from AWR reports.
As you know, "dba*" objects are not a physical table.
I would like to know how to figure out this performance issue..
The database is oracle 10.2.0.4 on a solars, and has about 110 tablespaces and 2300 data files.
The total size of the database is about 36 Tera size.
    SELECT a.tablespace_name || ' ' || ROUND ( (a.used_bytes - NVL (b.recycle_bytes, 0)) / a.total_bytes * 100, 2) USAGE

  • I have just bought a brand new iMac 27" with Snow Leopard but the MS office 2011 is running too slowly to even use...help!

I have litterally just bought my iMac with 2.7GHz Intel Core i5 and 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3 so why is Word barely functioning?! I have more than enough free memory but Word is operating so slowly it takes a full minute for the cursor to stop spinning after selecting a section of the page to start typing in....it is utterly unusable in this state and I am very angry that this should even be an issue with a brand new iMac!
I would really appreciate any help or advice you have to offer.

Will not use up a license.
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper
    Automaton
    Hazel
    CleanApp
    Yank
    SuperPop
    Uninstaller
    Spring Cleaning
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Lightroom 4 runs too slowly

I have spent weeks trawling forums now and implementing as much as I can from people's suggestions as to how to try and get Lightroom to run better.
As an example, alway leave the Details section til last, as it makes a significant impact on slowing Lightroom down.
I flush the cache before starting any work, I bought a  new 1tb drive, and downloaded a brand new, up to date nVidia driver for my card.
I've spent some considerable time ensuring that all meta data has been written to xmp and none is outstanding, and all 1:1 previews have been rendered for every image in the catalog. Standard previews are set at their lowest level, and I have set all LR locations including the cache, catalog and preview locations as 'excluded" from MSE, which is the only anti-virus type program I run.
I have tried using process 2010, then changing to process 2012 when the work is complete and implementing the changes, the same problems occur. Using process 2010 in LR 4.3 does not seem to be any qucker than using process 2012.
I've been through all Windows services to see which ones I can turn off and which I can't. All those not necessary for the operation of the computer are turned off.
The cache has been set at everything from 10gig to 150 gig, that doesn't seem to have any effect but it is at present on 100 gig. I flush it regularly when working. I also have tried deleting history from each file I work on, although this doesn't seem to have any positive impact either.
    Now, the issues.
When using Lightroom, there is a 'hang' or 'lag' of a fraction of a second before any command is carried out. So, if I zoom into full size, grab the small selection box from the view on the left to move it around my image, it is a half a second before it responds.  Often on any task, the cursor doesn't change, as if there is still something going on.
If I click using the healing brush to get rid of dust bunnies, it is 1-3 seconds before it appears and is editable, then I can move onto another. When using the spot healing tool, after 2 -3 photos have been completed, each time I click on the image the 'target' for the tool appears, but it is in the top corner of a very large black square, which does not disappear for 3-5 seconds.
I can do an image with maybe 20 of those then it begins to get real slow. If I then use the sliders, it can be up to 4-6 seconds before they respond. During this period, at random times on the top bar of Lightroom I see the message "Lightroom not responding" flash on and off, sometimes for minutes before it clears. If I then go to export the file as a jpg, it can take as much as 3 minutes to export one full size image from a RAW file. During that whole period the processor is toiling away at 100% and LR is using the max amount of memory, which for some reason is only just over 700mb. (I will paste the system info from LR at the end of this.) Once this begins, LR pretty much thrashes away at 100% of processor power for many minutes even when doing nothing, and trying the slghtest thing starts it off again.
Once I've exported 3-4 images, everything slows down to the point it's really unusable. If I try to export an image at that point, I get a 'not enough memory' message. I can try 5-6 times to export and I always get the same message. My only option then is to shut LR down, and start it up again after a minute or so, flush the cache and start again. Obviously this is an unacceptable workflow.
So,  I know that LR works fine for some people, so please don't say "It works for me", I know it does. It doesn't work for me though, and I am trying to establish why. If your car breaks down I don't point and say "It must be you cos I have the same car and mine is fine." What I would like is for anyone who has useful suggestions to help. Perhaps someone who it didn't work for and they solved the problem?

I think the "Available Memory" figure is pretty standard for a 32bit system, which is what I think the OP is running.
@howmanyetc: A couple of observations: the systems specs would seem to be not much higher than the minimum requirements for LR4, so blazing fast it ain't ever going to be. Also is the J drive the new external drive that you bought? If so I'm guessing that it may be USB2 connected? If so having the catalog on a "relatively slow" external drive is probably not the best idea from a performance perspective. The "red lining" of the CPU during exports is entirely likely, the processor is simply not sufficiently powerful to do the work quickly. As a comparison, exports which take maybe 3-4 seconds on my desktop would take upwards of 30 seconds on my old Thinkpad laptop (similar specs to yours) with both cores at 100% with no deviation (and that was back in LR3, so I can't imagine how slow it would be using LR4). The "getting real slow" after a while is more than likely due to your RAM limitations, especially on a 32 bit system.
I'm not saying that you should rush out and buy a brand new powerful system, though I do think you might struggle to make significant improvements given your specs. It sounds as though you are doing everything you can to improve things, however as I said, if the catalog is on a USB2 external drive, trying it back on an internal drive would be the first place that I would start. Having the images on the external is probably OK, your bottleneck for things such as Exports is CPU, not I/O.
Do you need to be writing XMP for all your files? Do you have the "Auto write XMP" setting enabled? If so, turning that off and using Ctrl+S to manually write the XMP at the end of a session may help a little.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • Running Too Slowly For Skype

We have a 1 month old NB300 with 1 gb standard. When trying to use Skype (battery or mains) Skype indicates that computer is running slowly. We can hear people from other end but our conversation fades out. This also happens on the Skpe test. All other programs are closed & switched to high performance.
Any suggestions? Will buying another gb of hard drive help. Running Windows 7 starter. Thanks

    Hi,
Personally, i never used Windows 7 starter. But as I know, skype doesn't require much Cpu resource to run. The 1 gb installed memory is pretty enough to run it. Have you tried to use the previous Skype versions?

  • With 3.6.10, on certain sites, screen and cursor freeze with warning: Macromedia 6 is running too slowly, do you want to cancel this script, but since the cursor is frozen, it is impossible to escape.

Many sites are producing this problem. I have to shut down the computer to get out of the site, and I have no idea why Macromedia would be running slowly, as I am not engaged in any media play at the time.

You need to remove Shockwave Flash 6.0 r23, it is interfering with the later version - Shockwave Flash 10.1 r85 .

  • WSA running too slow

Hello citizens! I've been having lot of trouble with an WSA. It runs too slowly. Some times a web page is displayed 5 or 6 minutes after I requested it. Has anyone found this kind of trouble? If so I would really appreciate some advice:
    [email protected]
    Regards.
    Bernardo

    Bernardo,
There is something definitely wrong if it's taking 5 - 6 minutes to display a page. The best way to analyze this would be to work directly with Iron Port support.
Many things can be a factor in this.
How are you deployed, transparently or explicitly?
Are you doing authentication? If so, have you tried disabling auth?
Are you using internal or external DNS servers?
The WSA should be as fast as the network / DNS / authentication servers. Unless it is being over encumbered.
How many connections do you have running through it at once? You can check with the CLI command "rate".

  • InDesign CC (2014) running very slowly

InDesign CC (2014) is running too slowly to use - it just crawls, with many seconds between a click and the response.
It is up to date and was running fine until yesterday afternoon. I can think of no reason for the sudden degradation. I'm running Windows 7. I have renamed the preference files and I have uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign, to no effect. Any thoughts welcome.

I have renamed both Adobe folders and copied across the fresh folders from the second user account. I had to boot into Safe mode to do so, as processes were locking both folders.
However, despite that surgery, InDesign is still freezing after it starts. It appears to start normally and fires up quickly, but then immediately freezes. So if you have any other ideas, I'd be grateful to hear them.

  • Macbook pro running painfully slowly since upgrade to Mavericks and worse since Yosemite

Hi, since upgrading to Mavericks my previously excellent 2011 Macbook Pro is running painfully slowly, and things have only got worse since the upgrade to Yosemite. It takes anything up to 10 minutes to get fully functional from opening the lid on standby, can take a good 5 minutes to connect to wifi, and I am getting stuck with constant spinning beach balls. I've cleaned things up, and deleted anything unnecessary so I have adequate space on the HDD but this doesn't seem to make any difference, and I'm not running any particularly memory hungry software. It was working perfectly before these upgrades and I'm really wishing I could just downgrade back to Mountain Lion now! I'm no expert so could really use some help. Do I just need more RAM or is this something more complicated?
I've run Etresoft and here are the results (I note there is some adware listed on Safari, but I don't use it ,using Chrome and Firefox instead):

  • Macbook Pro Running Very Slowly

Lately, my Macbook Pro has been running very slowly. The rainbow wheel keeps popping up and it takes a very long time to open windows or quit applications. Also, the computer gets really slowly even if only a few applications are open (e.g. Microsoft Word and iTunes). This problem has started recently, a few months after installing OSX 10.9.5. I don't know if this is the problem, if the hard drive needs to be cleared, some programs are taking up too much RAM, or if the computer is just getting old. Any help would be appreciated, and I have included the EtreCheck below as well.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • My Mac Air is running very slowly

My Mac Air has started running very slowly.  It is running Yosemite 10.10.2

    Hello All,
Same frustrating problem here with my MBA. It's running slow, fans are running at full throttle from boot to power down, the apparently notorious known  kernel_task process using between 200-400% CPU resources and some 450MB memory.
I have been reading hundreds of good support community threads, tried all reasonable advises such as resetting SCM, PRAM, upgrading from Maverick to Yosemite 10.3.3, endless chats with Apple support (nice peoples, but no help). I am getting desperate and close to deaf listing to the fans in my MBA.
Have seen several good supportive posts from Etresoft in various communities and now here again. Took the opportunity to download linked error check software and have inserted result below. I do however not expect this will really help in finding a solution, but you never know.
ANY advise and feedback appreciated (y)
    Cheers,
    Torben

  • My iMac suddenly started running extremely slowly.  Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

My iMac has always run like a champ but it suddenly started running very slowly today.  I haven't done anything different.  I'm not running all kinds of programs.  I've restarted several times and it takes about 20 minutes to start up.  The little color wheel starts spinning every time I start to do anything and each task takes 10-20 minutes to complete.  I can't do much in the way of self-diagnosis as it takes too long to do anything.  I'm writing this from another computer.  Any ideas of things to try before I bring it in for repairs?
    Thanks.

In general you should always have at least  15 - 20% of your hardd rive Free
No, this is an urban legend; you don't need 15-20% free. You should try to maintain around 30GB free, no matter what the size of your drive--and that's just a very rough ballpark; you may need much less or more,  depending on how you use your computer. But you won't notice slowdowns of this order until you get really close to the edge, much lower than 30GB.
There are two possible causes for this. One, your drive is failing and you should be sure you have all your data backed up on an external before it dies completely. To check your drive get the free demo of SMART Utility. (But don't even think about doing this until you have a backup in place. That's much more important.)
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
The other is you may have exhausted all your available RAM and the the system is writing to the hard disk instead because nothing is left. The drive may be "thrashing" trying to accomplish this. This will make things very slow and eventually may just freeze everything up.
Open Activity Monitor in Utilities, go to the System Memory tab. How much free memory is showing? What do you see for Page ins, Page outs and Swap used?
