LR 3 Crop Overlay Question

Hello,
I am in the middle of a lot of work and will not upgrade to LR 3 until later this summer, but I wanted to check if a feature I have requested was put into the program.
I was hoping to be able to overlay an 8x10 ratio crop over the "original" 8x12 ratio.  So in other words, when the crop tool is activated and set to "original", there is the ability to turn on a view to show where an 8x10 ratio crop would fall.
Thanks.

If this is true I am totally disappointed.
This is a "photography" related request and not a nifty feature add-on.  I deal with needing to leave room for an 8x10 from an 8x12 ratio in the same digital image file all of the time.  It is part of the modern digital workflow where on delivers a single digital file and the end user prints.
I don't understand.  This seems like such an easy yet important addition to this program.  My two feature requests and posting on the Adobe labs have fallen on deaf ears.

  • Crop Overlay stuck in Proportion mode

    Hi,
Recently I set up proportions for the Crop Overlay tool. Now it won't do free-form cropping any more. When I grabbed a center handle on a vertical or horizontal side of the crop overlay, only that side used to move for the crop and I could make the photo any horizontal/vertical aspect I wanted. Now it moves the entire crop rectangle keeping the proportion of the original photo.
When I click on Crop Tool the list of values shows no "free form". When I pick "Custom" it still does Proportional and when I try to Enter Custom it displays 1.00 x 1.00 for horizontal/vertical and will not allow me to delete either number.
How can I make the Crop Overlay free-form again?
    Thanks,
    Robert

It just sounds like you have the aspect ratio locked. Is the lock icon closed? Press A to toggle it off/on (open/closed).

  • Crop Overlay Tool

I believe this is something new and I cannot find the option to change it.  I don't remember this being an issue until recently.  When I am using the Crop Overlay, I make the frame box as I want it (currently constraining original aspect ratio) using the mouse.  When I go to move the box to the area I want it to be in, if I move my mouse left, the box goes right, mouse right box left, mouse up box down, and mouse down box up.  In other words, inverted and confusing.  Is this normal?  This is the only time on any application it does this so its definitely something in Lightroom.

In Lightroom, the box is fixed and you move the image underneath it.

  • Is it possible to create a Lightroom 5 cropping overlay guide from an image?

I must have dreamed this but I thought I saw that LR 5 had the ability to create a cropping overlay from an image.  My goal is to create a quicker way to place a date on 5x7 and wallets so that it works for both prints.  I want WHCC's wallet guide as an overlay.

It is not possible to create a custom crop overlay but you can use a Loupe Overlay to eyeball it.  View>Loupe Overlay>Layout Images and then navigate to a PNG (transparency enabled) version of this overlay. It will show you the overlay in Library>Loupe and Develop so that you can preview your crop.  If you don't have the means to create a transparent PNG, you can simply use CTRL/CMD to reduce the opacity of your Opaque PNG File.
Note: the Overlay and the Crop Overlay cannot be active at the same time.

  • PSE10 New Crop Overlay

The new crop tool menu in PSE10 includes an overlay bringing Elements into line with Lightroom and CS5. This is useful for composition using the rule of thirds or golden ratio. Check out the video tutorial (Quick Time add-on required)

Thanks ken. What is the rule of thirds? The best compositions traditionally place the subject at the intersections. Like all rules it can be broken; use your own judgment and shoot how you like.

  • Lightroom cc Crop overlay issue

When I try and use the Lightroom CC crop overlay tool I get what seems to be a rendering failure that shows as a blue box with a white cross. See attached.

Could you double check if you have Sync turned ON. See the attached screenshot which shows the top left activity panel. - Guido

  • Simple Crop tool question... how do I save the crop section?

    Hi,
I have a very simple crop tool question. I'm a photoshop girl usually... so Illustrator is new to me. When I select the crop section I want... how do I save it?... if I select another tool in the tool panel, the crop section disappears and I can't get it back when I re-select Crop tool. If I select Save as... it saves the whole document...and not just my crop section.
Like I said, simple question...but I just don't know the secret to the Illustrator crop tool.
    Thanks!

Either press the Tab key or F key.

  • Is it possible to use a layout image as crop overlay or show it in crop view?

    Hi,
I'm building a product studio workflow and the products to always be in the same framing.
I already build an png for layout image overlay in loupe view but when I switch into crop it disappears.
Is it possible to show it in crop view?
    thanks in advance

    "any way"
Applications such as ScreenRecycler, http://www.screenrecycler.com/ScreenRecycler.html, can do it.

  • Any Chance of Getting 8x10 Crop Overlay inside the 8x12?

    Hello,
I am using 2.3 and have not downloaded 2.4 but am wondering about a possible overlay feature.
Most cameras shoot an 8x12 frame yet I am often cropping for the lowest common denominator - 8x10.
Since some of the overlays resize inside the crop box, I am wondering why there is not a choice to add 8x10 or 5x7 ratios?
I am often delivering a digital file that is in 8x12 but needs to be "safe" for 8x10.
I have written this in the new features section but it strikes me as odd that Lightroom has a squiggly resizing shape and not photo frame sizes marked!
This great program has revolutionized my workflow and this one feature would stop a lot of guessing when cropping, making the program even better.

Other than keeping on developing your eye to know when you've got a safe crop in this situation, you could, as a workaround:
crop a batch to your normal ratio, then go through them quickly with the crop tool  set to 8 x 10, apply it, check then hit escape and move on.
Alternatively, you could create a batch of Virtual Copies, rename them, perhaps adding '8x10' to the file name, and crop them to the 8 x 10.
Finally, if you so wish, you could add this as a feature request.

  • Another dumb overlay question..

hi, sorry to bother you all with a redundant overlay file question but ive scoured the forum and still cannot wrap my mind around this process and what i am doing wrong.
heres what i have done, following step-by-step the lynda.com tutorial:
    1. import a 720x532 still of my menu BG.
    2. i create my overlays, in this case, 3 white stars, next to my 3 menu titles.
    3. i deactivate the visibility of the background, leaving a transparent screen with my 3 white stars.
    4. i save as a tiff, as a copy (no layers). i have tried saving while ticking the "Save transparency" as well as without it.
    5. i import the tiff file into DSP(v.4), set as Overlay File, then drag my button over the first menu title, but no star appears.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG I AM LOSING MY MIND AHH!!!
    please help, thanks in advance!
    -brooks

Go back to your photoshop file, make the three white stars into three black ones instead, on a white background. Export this as a .pict file and use it as the menu overlay.
In DVDSP, draw out the button rectangles. Set the colours for the buttons to be simple overlay type, and set the normal state to be black and zero opacity. Now set the selected state to be white and full opacity. You can choose another colour for the activated state - try red - and also set this to full opacity.
What should happen is that the default button will start off with the star and moving from button to button will make the star appear on each as you go.

  • Compositing/overlay question

So I made a clip in Animation and exported; properties as follows.
640x360 24fps Animation codec (background not rendered solid)
I then wanted to make it a 'background' for a lecture clip in FCP 6.06.
    Sequence is 1280x720 30fps HDV 720p30.
The lecture clip has been cropped and is moving from right to left across the canvas (using key framing of the 'center').
I want to use the 'background' clip at full opacity but I don't want it to "mix" with the lecture clip; I want the lecture clip to be the foremost video and have none of the background clip in it. Basically a video block that is 20% of the screen size moving across the screen.
I tried dragging the lecture clip in the canvas and chose 'superimpose' but that did not yield the result I'm aiming for.
I was able to accomplish the opposite of this; the background clip ONLY appears on the lecture clip (i think I used multiply).
I've been thumbing through the manual, my Apple Pro training series books, and this forum but have yet to find the answer.
How can I get the background clip to play in the background and have another video clip move across it as an overlay??
Any references to the manual would help...

    Sorry...
I made a clip in Apple Motion and exported with the Animation codec.
The lecture clip is a video clip of a person standing and talking...
And it has been cropped so that it can be moved across the screen.
(To make the video not as boring).
    In other words,
I have two videos. Clip A plays in the background while Clip B (being cropped in it's dimensions) moves from right to left across the screen AND overlaid on clip A. I want clip B in the forefront of the video.

  • Printer/Crop Mark Question

    Hi all,
I searched through the topics and found a post that was
talking about the crop mark. I have the same problem here, whenever
    i go to print>freehand MX>advanced, all that i find is just a
small window called "print preview" that's it. There's no
separations, paper setup, imaging, etc. I tried to open the same
dialog at my school and it has those features.
    Judy wrote:
    >What is your platform and OS?
    >If you are on Mac OS X, did you add the printer using the
    Print Setup
    >Utility? Is the correct PPD chosen for that printer?
It's OS X and yes, i installed the drivers (I own Epson R1800
and HP Psc 1200 series) and then add them using printer setup
utility. I also use apple airport express to print wirelessly.
    My questions:
    1. Does it have to be a post-script printer to have those
    features? (imaging, crop marks, etc)
    2. Does printing wirelessly affect this on Freehand MX?
(doesn't affect my adobe cs2 applications though)
    3. What can i do/try to have those features?
p.s. I read about the Xtra but i'm trying to get my Freehand
    "fixed" here =)
    Thank you
    Harry

Thr crop marks will not show unless you have a postscript
printer. If you are sending the job to a commercial printer they
will insert crop marks. If you are printing yourself and require
crop marks you can insert them with a PDF making application such
as Adobe Acrobat Professional. If you don't have that there is an
open source application called PDF maker which you can download at
www.freedomleague.org.za or at least find a link from that
    site.

  • DVD menu, overlay question

Hello fellow DVD menu builders, I need your help. I created a menu in Photo with different layers, I flattened the image to .pct: one is the background, the other is the overlay where the word itself should turn a white color when it is activated. It's not working. Here's what I did, I dragged the background .pct onto the blank menu in DVDSP, I set the dropbox as to Background, I dragged my overlay onto the DVDSP, using Overlay for a setting. Then I created a button where I want viewers to activate the button, but my overlay does not show up therefore viewers will not know when it is activated. So when I simulated the menu, the button never changed color, it goes immediately to the movie.
More info: the Start button is in light blue, the activated overlay is in white.
    Thank you!
    KChen

To clarify, your overlay generally needs to be black graphics on a white background.

  • Slideshow overlay question

    Hi
I'm playing around with a few ideas for an app and for some reason all of my slideshow overlays appear on top / infront of all the other content on the page when I view the app on my iPad.
In indesign I have sent the slide show to the back and can see any text or image boxes I've positioned over the top but on the iPad the slideshow keeps appearing on top of everything.
Is this a common problem and is there any work arounds or something I'm missing that will resolve the issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

a workaround would be to convert the items you want to have above into multistateobjects themself.
a one picture slideshow, or a notmoving scrollarea. this should normally work.

  • Crop tool question

Hi, I have a small issue which I can not find the answer too. I search the PS help system with no luck. I use the basic tools in PS to edit some product images here at work. Basically all I do is crop, resize, adjust contrast/brightness, and so forth.
Usually when cropping images I use the crop tool, select the area I want saved, then hit enter and everything else outside the drop boundaries is cropped away. Yesterday I noticed that when I click the crop tool button, then drag my cursor around the product and hit enter, everything disappears except a tiny dot the color of my background. Well when I say background, I mean if I take the photo of the product on a brown fabric background, then the color of the few pixels that remain are that same brown. But NO image at all of the subject. As far as I know, I didn't intentionally change any of the settings for the crop tool, but something has changed and I cant figure out how to restore it to the original setting. Hope someone cant help. Thanks in advance!

Clear out the fields in the Options area when using the Crop Tool.  Sounds like you've typed something in the Width, Height, or Resolution fields, and it's invoking the Crop Tool's resizing behavior.
The easiest way is to press this button:
