LR 3 vs. PSE editing?

Just spent a fair bit of time coursing through LR 3 overviews and descriptions and features - and yes it drives home the idea that it covers the whole digital workflow - including editing.
But, I could not find info as to what type of 'editing' or processing LR 3 does...
Yes it included noise reduction - but its vague there too.  It uses the Camera Raw 6/6.1 (mind you, it usually fell short of calling it ACR, preferring the name Photoshop Camera Raw, for example).  Does it also offer NR for jpeg? (Does PSE 8 offer NR for jpeg - or only ACR??)
So, can someone explain the extent of what LR 3 offers for image editing please?
(apparently there is no "pixel level editing?)
aside from 'potential' better NR in LR3, is there an 'Editing' reason I should acquire LR3 in favour of PSE 8?
Thank-you,

When you ask about the "type of editing" in LR3 vs PSE, do understand the really big difference in the conceptual models of the two.
In Photoshop/PSE, the editing model is built around the concept of layers. It's possible to preserve your original image...and also quite easy to change it irretrievably. In LR, there's no layers -- the model is to apply your edits to the image via non-destructive editing, aka parametric editing. You can toggle the edits on and off, and you can ALWAYS get back to your original image...unless/until you fire it up in Photoshop/PSE editor.
And yes, the noise reduction in LR3 is waaaayy more powerful than what's in PSE8. And the selection and image healing/cloning tools in PSE are (IMHO) waaaay more powerful than in LR3.  LR3 advocates claim they can do 90% of their editing there...but if you love to do photo restoration, for example, Photoshop/PSE would probably be the better tool.
And, oh yeah, LR3 is $299. So, download the 30-trial and decide if it works for you, before you spend that kind of money.

  • Saving PSE-edited RAW files directly into my iPhoto library in JPEG format

I take photos in RAW format and like to save the edited file in iPhoto in JPEG. I'm using a pretty convoluted process--changing the PSD extension to JPG and saving to my desktop. Then dragging the file from desktop to iPhoto in the dock. The file is then in its own event, and I can move it where I want it. Can the file be saved directly to the event in iPhoto from PSE? Thanks.

No. What you are doing is the "correct" way to do things.
The problem arises because when you process the RAW it's saved as a different format, hence a new file and that has to be imported independently.

  • PSE 7(edit) not working

I use Windows Vista and PSE 7.
Recently when trying to open PSE 7(edit) I get a message that Adobe PSE(edit) has stopped working. It also states that " A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

Look in the Window Event Logs to see if they have more specific information:  Start...Contol Panel...Administrative Tools...Event Viewer.  In the Event Viewer window, expand the "Windows Logs" folder in the left panel and select the "Application" log.  Look for any event with a red icon that refers to Photoshop Elements.
    Post the event's message here.

  • Editing photos (from iphoto) in PSE 11

I've recently upgraded to PSE 11 from PSE 10. Previously, when I click edit in iphoto, the photo that I want to edit automatically opens up in PSE 10 and I can do my edit rightaway.
However, the photo does not open up automatically in PSE 11 now. My computer will launch PSE 11 but I have to manually load the photo for editing.
I've done the necessary settings in iphoto (i.e edit using external editor) but it's still not working like it used to.
Is this a change in feature in PSE 11 or I'm missing something here?
Appreciate all advice and tips on this.
    Thank you.

In iphoto, for any edited photo (no matter where you edited), to see the original, select the edited photo and go to Photo>Revert to Original. iPhoto remembers your original, but versions in iphoto don't work the same way the do in PSE, at least not when you use an external editor. iPhoto assumes that if you want to use another program for editing, you want to use that other program for editing. If you want to use iphoto instead, you would need to revert it. If you want to have both available, the original and PSE edit, some versions of iphoto automatically send a duplicate for editing, but I don't think the latest version does, so make a duplicate in iphoto and send that to PSE.
An external editor is by definition external --the photo left iphoto to get edited. The external editor mechanism merely lets you  get your edited photos back into iphoto again automatically.

  • Editing with Photoshop Elements 4.0

I'm sure the problem and solution are simple, but I'm missing something. Here goes.
I'm using iPhoto 6.0.2. Just installed and started using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0. Have been editing about 1,100 photos from a recent trip to Africa, which were imported from my Canon. Wanted more editing tools, so stopped editing with iPhoto and started using PS Elements. So I open a photo from the iPhoto library using PS Elements. Let's say I open a photo from Roll 100, and call it the Monkey Photo. I edit the Monkey Photo in PS Elements, and then save (not save as, but save, using the same Monkey Photo file name). It saves the photo, but not back into Roll 100, but into a new Roll created somehow by the operating system, let's call it Roll 110, found in both the Originals and Modified folders (which seems odd).
Just like importing directly into iPhoto, when I save from PS Elements, a thumbnail is created, called a Preview. So now I have two thumbnails/previews, one from the original photo and one from the PS edited version.
So now I go to the Africa album in iPhoto. I double click on the thumbnail on the main screen to open Monkey Photo and I see a big gray blob with a large exclamation point in the middle. I go to the iPhoto library folders, and see that Monkey Photo is no longer in Roll 100, but now in Roll 110. But somehow iPhoto is not recognizing Monkey Photo in Roll 110 (and it's no longer in Roll 100, so as far as iPhoto is concerned, it doesn't exist...but it does).
So back to iPhoto. I click on View and switch to Roll view. Now I see Roll 100 and Roll 110. I click on Monkey Photo thumbnail in Roll 100, big gray blob, but click on Monkey Photo preview in Roll 110, and now I see Monkey Photo, in all his/her wonderfully edited colors from PS Elements.
How do I get the thumbnail in the iPhoto Library and the Africa album to work to recognize that Monkey Photo is now in a new roll? I did the rebuild stuff (control-option on opening iPhoto, click on first three choices, wait 30 minutes....nothing happened). I noticed the ColorSync profile was missing, and reinstalled it. Still the big gray blob following thumbnail clicking. I did a war dance. Still nothing.
What am I missing here? If you tell me that I have to recreate the Library, then the next noise you hear will be iPhoto disc being used as a frisbee and smashing into the neighbor's window.

    Robert:L
Are you accessing that file from the Finder to open in PSE or are you using iPhoto's preferences to use PSE when you double click a thumbnail? The latter is the way it should be done. Then as long as you do not create a layered or otherwise edited file that required the psd extension nor change the file name, iPhoto will recognize the edit update the thumbnail accordingly. If you access those files from the Finder, open in PSE, edit and save, the thumbnail will not be updated but when you go to the edit mode you'll see the edits.
Go to iPhoto's preferences and under the General section select PSE under the Open photo with: menu.

  • New PSE 10 User has a question

Can anybody out there tell me how to inport pictures from Aperture to PSE 10?

Most often, you would want to set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from Aperture to PSE, edit them there and save over the existing file without making any changes in the name or file format in order for aperture to make a version for you. (You may need to make a change in Editor>preferences>saving files>on first save for PSE to do this). If you want to change the name or format, you would need to save to the desktop and import the edited file back to aperture as a new image.

  • Unable to view recent photos on my Mac in PSE 11 organizer

unable to view recent photos on my Mac in PSE 11 organizer ..I see them in Iphoto not organizer..Please help

On import, iPhoto copies photos into its library, which is proprietary to itself and should never be poked and prodded from outside iphoto or you run a strong risk of corrupting the library and losing your photos. So you eventually need to choose between iphoto and organizer.
If you want to use iphoto, then you have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from iphoto to PSE, edit them, then save without changing the name or format (you may need to adjust the pse preferences>saving files>on first save), and iphoto will remember your last edits and the orginal. However, you must to lose the edited version to use the original again, and this method doesn't work well with raw files.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto to the desktop, user File>Open in the editor,  edit the photos, make all the changes to name and format that you like, save the photos and import them back to iphoto as new files.
Or if you decide you prefer organizer, set the this iphoto preference to No Application and you can call up the photo downloader from within organizer, or just drag the photo with the images in it from the card to wherever you want to keept them:
and of course you don't need to user either iphoto or organizer unless you want.

  • Using PSE 11 with iPhoto

A previous discussion recommended selecting "Save Over Current File"  in PSE Preferences to save PSE edited photos to iPhoto; should I check "Save As to Original Folder," or not?  I'm ending up with the original and the edited photo as two separate photos and would prefer to see only the edited photo with a "Revert to Original" option in iPhoto, rather than having to "hide" originals and look for them later.

  • Using PSE catalog/organizer with CS5

I have been using PSE 7 for a while and have just transitioned to Photoshop CS5.
I would like to use the catalog from PSE for organizing photos, and PS CS5 for editing.
In the PSE preferences I have tried to notify PSE that I want to use PS CS5 as the supplementary editor. All I get is a message that says I do not need to choose PS as the other editor as PSE already supports using PS from the edit menu and edit toolbar (which I can`t see how that would happen).
It is my guess that PSE catalog/organizer and PS CS5 do not interact, and that I can use both but independently.
    Is my guess correct?

Thanks, MTSTUNER. I now see that option in PSE Edit menu. However, when I select it there is a message that Thumbnails are being updated, and a copy of the photo is made in the organizer. PS does not launch, and if I launch PS first, the photo still does does not appear in PS.

  • Problem to start PSE 10 after closed it down

When closing down PSE 10 (installed on a PC WIN7 Pro computer) the close down process seems to works OK. However when trying to start PSE again an errror message occurs with that the PSE is running and need to be closed before restart. I can find the file PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe in the Windows Task Manager and if I close that file down the PSE can start again.
The problem seems related to that the PSE down take down all files properly. I have removed the PSE and reload it with the same result.
So know I need to enter the Task Manger each time I need to reopen the PSE if I have run it since the last PC power on

Hi, I think I will wait for creating a new account, the cumputer is new so the it should have been a rather clean installation of PSE from the start I think. A new account (even if I can delete it) may create other problems??
Since last time I have done the folllowing:
    1. I did the check in the "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0\Editor\
and I have the 4 files as below:
I didn't have any error message in this folder, even if i 5 sec before had the failure report that the PSE couldn't start due to that is was already running. I have used my normal functions in PSE and I can't see that any functions is missing.
    2. I tried again to create a short cut to the PSE editer but this time I tried to run that after a computer restart and this time it didn't start, it stated that some file were missing.
    3. I saw in the Adobe PSE 10 folder that VLC had to files in this folder. I have installed VLC on the cumputer, I don't know if that can be a conflict??
    Edit:
    4. Maybe i could be important to know that the I can't find the organizer in the set-up I have know, if I start the application with the original icon the Editor starts. If i click on the organizier in the upper right corner it starts to create some work areas but nothing else happen. I don´'t use the organizer so for me it's OK but maybe it's linked to my other problem?
I think I will also try Adobe support call or chat, thanks for trying to help me :-).

  • PSE on Mac ALWAYS crashes

Each time I want to save or saves as, PSE crashes. Completely restarted my Mac (iMac i7 with 12 Gb of memory and plenty of diskspace). OS X 10.6.7.
Any clues? Don't know what to do anymore...

Start up in Safe Mode. This will eliminate any and all third-party Start up items and almost everything you may have done to modify your OS. You will be using almost totally Apple supplied/needed file.
To start up in Safe Mode:
    1. Shutdown the computer.
    2. Wait 10.37912 seconds (or count to ten slowly, if you don't have an accurate atomic clock handy).
    3. Start the computer, using the power button and immediately hold down the shift key (either one).
    4. Keep holding the shift key until the startup process is complete (you see your Desktop).
Check <this Apple web page> for what this mode does and what will not work for the short time you'll be using your Mac in this manner.
Now, open PSE, edit a pixel or two and attempt to use the Save dialog. Please report back as to the reaction of the Mac. ;-)

  • Captions typed in Organizer, Is there a command to have them automatically added in document?

Is there a way to have the captions that I typed in Organizer
print under the photo when I put them in Photoshop Elements?  or do I have to  type it in text again?   Photo Collage has a
box you check for it to include captions automatically but I am not finding one when I create a blank
file and start from scratch in Photoshop elements.  Printing six pictues on my home printer for a scrap book.

from your presvious thread, I think that you are running PSE 8 and that may be relevant to this discussion.
Also, I suspect that no one replied to your earlier post because there probably is not a method to do what you wish - automatically including the Captions when you start by creating a blank file and then add photo files.
So I suspect that you will need to use the PSE edit Text Tool to add the contents of the caption field on top of or below your photos.
Therefore, if you wish to save time you might wish to examine the Collage and Photobook layouts again to determine if any choices are sufficiently close to what you want.
--- Another alternative would be if someone or some web site is distributing additional layouts for PSE 8 - perhaps someone else on this forum will know.
--- you might also post a question about additional possible layouts with captions over on the elements village forums at

  • Loss of functionality / Can't open iPhotos in Photoshop Elements 9

Recently installed iPhoto 11 and Photoshop Elements 9 (great app). I have noticed an iPhoto functionality loss: in iPhoto '09, Prefs --> General --> Double click photo: --> edits photo vs magnifies photo. No matter which one you picked, double click would open the photo magnified, either with either the edit tools already open, or the edit tools one click away. PSE was easiy accessible from right-click "Open in external editor." I had the best of both worlds, it was easy to go back and forth, using iPhoto for straightening, cropping, and simple repairs, and PSE for bigger operations.
Now, "Double click photo:" has vanished. If I select "edit photo in: PSE," PSE opens when I double click, and the iPhoto tools aren't available. If I select "edit in iPhoto," I have to open PSE separately and drag my iPhoto to the PSE edit pane.
Speaking of which: I am having a another problem opening my iPhotos in PSE9.
When I select a photo and click "open in external editor", PSE9 opens, but the photo does not appear in the PSE9 edit pane! If I try to navigate to it, if in the PSE9 menu bar, I select File --> Open --> Nikon library, I get a dialog box than says "could not complete request because of a program error." I spent an hour on the phone with Adobe help, and the best she could come up with was to drag my photos one at a time from iPhoto to the PSE9 icon. That worked for awhile, then it stopped accepting more than one photo at a time. So no way to move objects between two photos, or use photomerge or group shot or any of those multi-photo features.
What's going on here? Is this an iPhoto problem, or a PSE9 problem? And what to do? Thank you.

Try removing PSE as the editor, maybe select Preview, and then go back to PSE. See if that will jumpstart it.
I may be preaching to the choir here but here are some tips on using PSE with iPhoto:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • VISTA color management and monitor calibration

    Elements 7.0
    VISTA Home Premium SP1

    Samsung SyncMaster 213T
    Canon XSi
    Multiple printers
Since getting new system with Vista, I haven't been able to get a print that looks like my screen. I tried Costco today and everything was much darker than I expected, but the reds were much richer. I read a lot about calibrating my monitor, but it is possible that there is more do it than that? Learning to adjust skin tone etc. in Photoshop, only to have the prints look bad is pretty frustrating.
Is the other option to invest in a quality printer, or go to a real lab instead of Costco?
Please use small words, since I'm not a professional.
    Regards,
    Michael

Michael, color management is certainly a difficult issue to perfect. My monitor is color calibrated but it doesn't guarantee that the prints will match. With the same image, I get different results from different printers and labs. I get the best results from labs in the local camera/photo shops, and the pricing for enlargements is still on par with like Snapfish or Kodak.
Check this setting in PSE: Edit>Color Settings...>Always Optimize for Printing. I would suggest color calibrating your monitor, then try different labs until you find the best results.
