LR 3 will not import images

I just installed LR 3 on a brand new MacPro. I imported 27,000 files in from an external hard drive, which I had already put through LR3 on my PC. (Yes I tried to export the catalogue from the PC to the MacPro, after four failed attempts and hours on the phone with Adobe tech support I gave up and did it this way.)
These images all imported successfully. Then I tried to import from a CF card using a good card reader. The images all showed up in the import preview screen I selected the location to which I wanted them to be copied and an import preset. But LR will not import them - it gives me an error message: The files were not imported because they cannot be read." These are files from a D700, the same camera I have been importing files from on the PC for over a year. I purged the camera raw cache preferences & tried again with the same result.  Using another good card reader reached the same result. I can open the files with no problem in PS CS4. The files are fine.
I then moved the files to a folder on the desktop and tried to import from there. This time the error message is: "LR could not copy files to the requested location" and nothing imported as well.
Any ideas?

Thanks for getting in touch, away from the desk at the moment, but
1. The installation process was a nightmare, check the forum for how many people had a problem with that
2. As for screen shot, it is just the import screen the moment after you hit "import" it just hangs I will comply upon my return
3. As for where "I" went wrong, as the process has been precisely what I have consistently done for the last 6 years I'm fairly confident this is a software situation- I won't say never, but I'm good on this because LR3 can still be utilized in the same way AND I can create a catalog that LR 4.1 will open, the only workaround so far.
Thanks,
Daniel

  • Adobe LR3 will not import image files.  Running on Mac OS 10.6.4

When I try to import images into LR3 I get the errors show on attached screenshots.  Anyone know how to fix this?

I'm having the same problem and I'm running LR3 on Mac OS 10.6.4 as well.
I put my SD card into my iMac's SD card slot, and tried to import into LR3, but got an error that all of my new files were not imported because they "...could not be read (17)".  They can be read just fine by GraphicConverter.  I shoot RAW+JPG and LR3 will not import either version (e.g., if I remove the .CR2 files from the SD card, LR3 won't read the .jpgs either).  I also put the SD card into a reader (instead of into the iMac's SD card slot) and that didn't work.
I copied the RAWs to the Desktop and tried to import from there, but in that case I get a message that the import operations were not performed because "a file could not be copied to the requested location (34)".
I imported images from this SD card on the 5th, and I haven't formatted it since then.  The only thing that's changed that I know of is the Mac OS update, but I would expect that if that were the problem, I wouldn't be able to read these files anywhere (i.e., GraphicConverter).
    Any suggestions?
Update:  I've now tried another SD card, and a CF card, and LR3 will not import any of the files on them - I get the same "...could not be read (17)" error.  I have repaired disk permissions, and I've trashed the Lightroom 3 preferences.
Update #2:  I've deleted and re-installed Lightroom 3, and I still cannot import any new images.  Lightroom 2 imports just fine.  This is becoming infuriating.
    Anyone have any suggestions yet?

  • Aperture 3 will not import image files on hard drives (need bug check).

For the past several days, I've been encountering an issue where Aperture will not recognize photos on a local hard drive (internal or external) for import, but will recognize the exact same image if it is located on a flash card. In fact, I can drag an image from a card to my desktop and it will not be recognized. If I drag it back to the card, it is available for import again. It is not a 100% occurrence however, but doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason. Restarting Aperture does not help, but this is not to say it won't be working fine the next day.
I am investigating whether anyone else has this issue for a possible bug report.
    Thanks

I'm having this problem right now. If I switch to a flash card reader with a card inserted, it immediately shows the thumbnails of files available for import. I just finished importing a backup folder of images and that worked as expected, but going back to other folders show nothing inside of them to import.
The File Types panel from Import Settings shows no exclusions checked and the RAW+JPEG Pairs settings do nothing (in any case, this should only apply to RAW+JPEG pairs, which I don't have).
Anybody else find anything that worked?

  • Please help!  iPhoto will not import images

I've imported thousands of times and suddenly, today I am unable to import my pictures from one of my memory cards to iPhoto. Now I did click on cancel import, because I wanted to name my roll, etc. That is where the problem started. After I clicked on cancel import, I was never able to get iPhoto to open up to import those photos from that particular memory card again. Do you think the card is corrupt? I am able to view the pictures on my camera...just am unable to import them. What can I do??? I have very important pics on this card!! Thanks for helping.

Oh no! But, I am able to see the pictures on my camera review screen though. If the card was damaged, I wouldn't be able to review the images on the camera right? I think I may have turned off the camera too soon during the initial import, and somehow that messed up the card?? My husband is going to be so ticked off if we can't get these photos to import somehow! And I have some pictures of my niece's graduation on it also! What a nightmare!

Need more info :-) .  What problem are you trying to solve?  In what way is the behavior of Aperture different from what you expct?
"Preview" means something specific in Aperture.  Is that what you mean?
What photos are you trying to sync?
You mention "import" in your subject but not in your message.  It is not possilble to provide good advice without knowing what you are asking.
Ask for clarification if you don't know what "Previews" are, or what "import" means.  Don't worry about asking -- Aperture is a very complex and difficult program.

[I replied to another thread, but it doesn't seem to be coming up at the top of the post list when I update my information, so I'm reposting in the hopes that someone will notice and offer some helpful advice, as this is rapidly becoming infuriating.]

Update #2:  I've deleted and re-installed Lightroom 3, and I still cannot import any new images.  Lightroom 2 continues to import just fine.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

OK, I _think_ I have the cause & cure.
    Cause:
Canon says the software [firmware?] bundled with the Canon Rebel XT  "is not fully compatible with the latest version of OSX." I can continue to automatically bring up iPhoto or use ImageCapture, in any case.  Thanks, but I want LR3.  Canon recommended that I set the controls in ImageCapture to specify opening LR3 when a camera is detected.  I did, but it was doing this before, so I saw no difference.  Also, I'm not sure it was doing it reliably, before or after this change.
This software incompatibility might explain why the Canon Rebel XT was not loading into LR3, but would not explain why it was not recognized by the Finder to add to the Devices list.  The Canon wouldn't get added to the Devices list in OSX 10.4.11, either.
ImageCapture could easily see the images on the camera, and could copy them to a HD without difficulty.  But it's not LR3, and nothing convinced the Finder to add the camera to the Devices.
    Cure:
What I did find, eventually, as a method for persuading LR3 to import properly is this:
I set ImageCapture to open itself when it recognizes a camera.
I jack in the camera, and ImageCapture opens.
THEN I open LR3.  It comes up with the present images in the library.
I _click_ on the Import button (lower left), OR use the keyboard command (cmd-shift-I).  It opens the import display, _with_ the images from the camera.
I set the LR3 import settings as I want them - I Copy the files, change file names, presets, etc. as desired.  (I make a habit not to erase the camera files, until all is said and done, and the camera is disconnected from the computer.)
I click the Import button, and it does!
    SUCCESS!
If I have it open ImageCapture first, that seems to persuade LR3 that images are on the camera.
Sometimes iPhoto accomplishes the same end, but I'd rather not launch that - subsidiary issues.
I went through this sequence a number of times, starting from neither software open.  I tried different sequences - LR3 then ImageCapture, camera first or last, etc.  The above sequence worked reliably; the others' responses confused me.
Those of you with similar Canon uploading problems, see if this helps any.  If you don't have ImageCapture, try it with iPhoto instead.  Just open it first.
sandrift71, does this answer your original question & resolve the problem for you?

  • PSE 9 and 5 will not import - says the file already exists in the catalog !

I've already wasted 2 days looking for answers to this. When someone buys this program, at least half of the price is paying for the database in the Organizer - yet even John Ellis himself, who seems to know more than anyone about it, has gone to Lightroom. This is bad coding!!!
Upgraded from 5 to 9. If you read my previous posts, this took 2 days too, and phone help from a tech, because it would not install in my XP computer. It did upgrade the Organizer from 5, although many of the symbols are unusable and don't work to help me identify my tags. However, now I see that neither 5 nor 9 is able to look at a file and display thumbnails that are in it.
I move files around a lot for my business. Any half-way good database should be able to find the missing files, and also add any new images. Say I have 10 images in file A, then add 2 more to make 12. It can't see the added images! Says can't import, the file already exists in the catalog.
I tried: updating thumbnails, recover, repair, in both 5 and 9 - nothing works. to import the images that I can SEE in these folders! I read here  that it will not import files if the same name is somewhere else. That alone is a problem.  But I think it's more than that: even if the file used to be in another folder, folder B, it won't recognize that it's in folder A now!
Since PSE9 uses sql db, shouldn't that be better than 5 and be able to do simple tasks like this?
Any advice or similar experiences eagerly welcomed.

Thank you for replying, dj paiqe.
Do you mean the first little section that says photos may not be displaying? Yes, those just reveal hidden photos and are very basic. I did them.
I guess we disagree about databases and what they are designed to do, or maybe I didn't explain this well.
I did not move the images outside of the catalog: I move them to various folders, all already imported WITHIN the catalog, as I send them to various editors. (these are all drawings, not photos, and I do this professionally, so it needs to work).
Folder A and Folder B and Folder C have already been imported into the catalog. So if I move 2 images from folder B into folder A, the Organizer is simply lost, says image already exists, and everything is totally screwed up, as the image is no longer in folder B, and it can't find it in folder A!!! The problem is, unless I memorize the image name, say Image 9, I can't tell it to reconnect, as there is no longer an image in front of me! So there are 2 images, without names, now nowhere to be found. Inefficient, to say the least.
I've never tried Lightroom or Filemaker, but I cannot believe that they would lose data like this. I think it's the Folder coding that's not working in PSE, and I wanted this to work so badly!!!!!
I am willing to do it the PSE way, since you now have captions, keywords, etc, and it is a very powerful database, when it works. I understand that one is supposed to move images within the Organizer, obviously. But now many images are disconnected. I could start all over importing, but is there any way to do that without losing tags and categories?

  • PrE 11 will not import .jpg files from organizer

    Hi,
I just upgraded from PS & PrE 8 to the lastest version 11. I'm running on a Windows 7 pc.  My catalog was successfully converted and new pictures were added.  I now want to create a dvd with both pictures and videos.  I tried various ways to import .jpg files in PrE but some (most) of my files will not import.  I get error messages about the files not being supported (missing codex) or the files being too large.
After reading on the forums and on Adobe help site.  It seems opening and resaving the files in the organizer fix this.  I try and it worked.  As I have many files to import (200+), I wonder if there is a way to do some sort of a batch process for all file.
Secondly, also I read PrE can automatically resize the image file to the project size.  How can this be acheive ?
    Thanks for your help

Please see my answer to this question. It's essentially the same answer I'd give you.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1129183?tstart=0
You can not create a playable DVD or incorporate video and photos in the same project with full resolution photos on it. Video resolution/TV resolution is only 720x480 (standard resolution) or 1920x1080 (high rez).
Premiere Elements has a governor that limits the size of a photo you can add to a video project (which is probably what you're running into). In fact, you'll get much better results if you use LOWER resolution photos in your video project -- 1000x750 pixels for DVDs and standard resolution video and 2000x1500 for BluRays and high-def video.

  • .CR2 will not import into  iphoto 08 7.1.5

I have a few hundred photos taken by a friend that i am trying to import into my iphoto library.
    Getting an unrecognizable file message.
I shoot on a Canon XSi in RAW and have no issues importing to iphoto, Apature or photoshop....
her images were shot on a Canon TSi in RAW and will not import into any of my programs.

The fact that you can use the Raws from your XSi is of no relevance.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Changing the Raw specification is one of the ways of upgrading the cameras.
IPhoto and Aperture support -  or don't -  the same cameras.

  • IPhoto 6.06 Will Not Import RAW CR2 files Taken Through an Uncoupled Lens

If I use adapters to couple my Canon 20D to a telescope (which is an electronically uncoupled lens and has no lens-related exif data), iPhoto freezes and will not import a RAW Canon CR2 file taken through any telescope. It imports such jpegs just fine, and Preview can open either. iPhoto, however, must be forced to quit under the Apple menu.
It doesn't matter where the RAW file is...in the camera, on the desktop, in a card reader, or on a CD.
This is an obvious bug in iPhoto.

Do you have access to an Apple store, or a friend
with Aperture? It would be interesting to see if
    Aperture has the same problem.
Not that it really matters, but a bug in both
iPhoto and Aperture is more likely to be fixed!
I don't know anybody who uses Aperture, and my nearest Apple Store is 120 miles away in Cincinnati.
I'm able to work around the problem since Canon's Digital Photo Professional, working with Canon's EOS Utilty, imports and processes these images just fine, as does Photoshop CS.
However, I miss the premise that iPhoto should be the central organizer and storage vessel for all of one's digital photos, making naming, finding, and backing them up a snap, even though a different program may be used for processsing them.
As an aside, Canon's download site warns that EOS Utility 1.1.1 will not work on Intel Macs; it does...with full functionality.
    Thanks for your response.

  • Advice on .jpg files that will not import

I have .jpg files that are not importing into LR even though they open fine on my Mac. Is there anyway I can find out why LR will not import them? Any advice for dealing with images like this?
    Thanks.

Usually it's due to Lr perceiving some file wonkiness that your Mac is less picky about (Lr prefers to keep details of such to itself...). ExifTool could probably fix it, without re-creating image data, if you knew how, but it might be simplest to just re-save the file using any software that will work, maybe save in tiff format, to prevent quality loss due to re-jpeg'ing a jpeg, and maybe metadata will be re-written in a format more palatable for Lightroom.

  • Camcorder connected but will not import or show video

I have a Sony Digital 8 camcorder that used to work well with imovie. Although I have it connected and the blue screen states that the camcorder is connected, imovie will not import the video nor will it show it playing. When I rewind or fast-forward, it will show the counter but I will not get a picture. The play, fast forward and rewind buttons in imovie will operate the camcorder but no image or sound. The import button shows that it is being pressed but still no results. Aill I get is the blue screen with its message of camera connnected.
I have used different tapes, verified that the tapes have content, rechecked the connections and reset the permissions. Could use any and all advice.

    Hi Richard
In rare cases this can have happened.
    A. Try Your Camera on another Mac. OK - Then skip the rest !
    B. Control the 6-pin end of Your FW-cable and the connector on Your Mac so
    that it is not broken.
As You see it is Non-symetrical BUT it can be forced in upside down and if
You use back side connecter it is even easier while it's hard to see what's
    going on.
If this has happened = You have a broken Camera.
It will be controlable by iMovie
will record and play normally via lens/analog connector
but - NO import or export via FW-connector
    Analog/digital chip blown. Expencive repair.

  • Aperture 2.1 will not import .crw from my Canon 300D Digital Rebel?

    Hi
I am having problems with Aperture 2.1. I have a number of RAW files on my Canon 300D DSLR, which will not import into Aperture. Aperture recognises the camera and the photos via USB connection directly to the camera. However, when I click on import all (or for that matter if I attempt to import a single photo) I receive the following error box:
"Import From Capture Card Completed with Errors - 0 images have been imported into the project named "untitled project". - Aperture failed to import the 19 images listed below:"
It then list all of the images, for instance: CRW_0309.CRW.
I am almost certain that Aperture 2.1 is compatible with the Canon 300D and .crw files: does anyone have any idea why I am having problems? Please feel free to ask me any questions, which may help you to understand my issues.
This is my first post, sorry if I've done anything wrong.
    Si

You might be onto something there nbirchler ... whilst I have not installed all the Canon software I have got the Canon remote capture installed ... but more to the point I have iPhoto, Aperture, Elements, Photoshop, FinepixViewer, Adobe DNG and various RAW developer type packages, as well as god knows what else lurking ... maybe one of these was interfering as I had not specified a default program to interface with my camera.
Does anyone know if there is a window (shouldn't use that word in Appleland really lol), or menu in OSX (perhaps in system preferences or something) for selecting the default image download software for your camera? I assume if you say 'yes' to iPhoto on bootup, or 'yes' to Aperture it must just tick a box somewhere in OSX ... wheres the box?
It would be useful to interface directly with OSX before I insert my camera and ensure I have the package I want to open selected.
