LR 3 will not link to external drive since install of Cache file for another program?

Thumb nails link to the new Cache file on the external hard not the original catalog location on the drive. I can find the files on the drive doing a search in LR but each has to be located individually and confirmed and I have thousands. I deleted the Nikon Capture NX 2 Cache file and its contents but the LR file search still comes up (General> Capture NX Cache). General is the name of the HD with the catalog links. 2 Generals show in both program browsers even though the new Cache file was deleted and does not show when you scan the General HD. Beware LR users keep HD dedicated to LR files only!
Can anyone tell me how to get LR 3 to recognize the original General HD?

Error -36 = I/O error
I have this similar issue before with my external HD. The worst case is that suddenly my external HD would not connect at all. Mac OS does not recognize the device. I end up reformatting the whole HD to Mac format.
I guess the problem is that Mac is having problem reading and writing to a windows formatted drive. I have a few thumb drive that will only work on windows pc but not Mac. Couldn't reformatting it under Mac either. Weird...

  • Mac Mini Will not boot from external drive or install disk

    Hi,
I just bought a new 2.0 ghz mac mini 1 gb ram. 120gb hdd.
I have a separate external HDD attached and wanted to boot from this. It works with my MBP and IMAC.
When i plug it into the Mac Mini and start up with Option key. It recognizes it.
I then click on it. It automatically reboots.... then grey screen comes on. It goes black after about 10 seconds. then boots into original operating system.
I also tried to use the MAC install Disk, thinking it might be a corruption in the shipped software. It does the same thing.
I have MAC Install DVD on an external drive too. Same issue.
I partitioned the HDD and installed a copy of the Mac install disk onto that with disk utility... Same thing grey screen, then black then back to original operating system.
Not sure what is going on?
    thanks
    Chris

    Hi,
    Thanks.
    It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
    I have reset the PRAM.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Cannot backup to external drive since installing updates for Lion.

Since installing updates to Lion os, my external 2TB western digital drive now cannot backup and disc utility cannot repair.
I apparently now need to reformat the external drive but first must back up the files on the external drive or they will be erased.
Does this now mean that I have to buy a second external drive and transfer all the files (one and a half TB's worth) on the existing external drive to the new external drive and then reformat the old drive and then transfer the files back onto the old drive?
Why do software updates for os cause problems with external backup drives?
I thought the whole point of updates was to keep the system running smoothly and not create havoc.

if you backup to the device it should not matter if the backup is erased as long as your main hd don't explode before you can back it up to the external hd once more after it have been formatted
if the hd is empty timemachine does a 100% full backup of everything on the hd to the ext hd

  • MBP slow to boot and WILL NOT boot from external drive

I have two problems. First my friends MacBook Pro which is less than a month old is taking long to load. So I did a clean install without installing anything other than what came. Still slow to boot. Sometimes I see a light blue screen for a while before getting into the desktop. She complains of the beachball far too often. She says my MacBook is faster than her Pro, which is not right.
So I came down with my external LaCie drive, which I cloned from my iMac 24". I wasn't able to boot from the external (firewire) drive using her MacBook Pro. I thought my LaCie drive was bad or soemthing, but when I got home, I hooked it up to my MacBook and booted from the external drive just fine. I use SuperDuper to make a bootable clone.
So as it stands now, her computer is slow to boot into the OS, and it won't let me boot from my external drive. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I did a clean install, used cocktail, etc. If it persists, I'll tell her to take it in.
    Thanks,
    Bryan

  • Projects will not open from external drive

I have been creating and saving my projects to an external drive for sometime now. When I tried to open it recently, it recognizes the Lacie but it will not recognize the projects. When you look on the Lacie it's self all of the files are there but when clicked on they still will not open.
Please help I don't know what to do...

  • Mac will not boot from hard drive or install disc

    Hello All
In dire need of advise...my intel Mac will not boot, even tried booting to the Snow Leopard install disc and all I'm getting is the white screen, apple logo and the wheel.
Just before this happened there was a buzzing sound like the fan was about to fail but that is only a guess on my part. Is there a keyboard shortcut to boot to a terminal window or similar to force the computer to boot from the install disc.
Thanks in advance for any help offered.
    Warren

    Hi Warren
Try holding the Option key and see if it will boot into Startup Manager, where you should be able to choose from a good Drive or your install Disk.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1533
or the D key and run the Apple Hardware Test.

Also note: key commands may require a USB Keyboard if your using a wireless and it has become unpaired.

  • MBP will not boot if external drive is plugged in

This has been a long-standing problem with any Mac I've used, but now that I use one on a daily basis it is more of a problem.
I have an external enclosure with a 500GB SATAII hard drive. I connect it to my MBP via the FW800 port. For some reason if I have the drive plugged in before I am in the OS, the computer will sit on the gray startup screen indefinitely (with no logos at all, simply a gray backdrop). As soon as I do a hard shutdown, unplug the drive, and restart the OS will boot fine. I use Boot Camp with Windows Vista, and since I store many large files the drive is formatted using NTFS. Could this be causing my problem? Any ideas on how to correct this?

    Hi Ryan,
it might be a wild guess, but is it possible, that the external harddisc is a 'Dynamic Drive' and not a 'Basic Drive'?
While in Vista have a look with the 'Disk Management'
To access the Disk Management console, right click Computer and select Manage. Under Storage, click Disk Management. The drive configuration of your computer will be displayed in the details pane.
It seems that OSX has problems even recognizing Dynamic Drives.
Also is there the possibility, that you use 'Drive Encryption' on the external HD ?

The cursor moves when using a track pad and magic mouse, but I can't click on anything. Also computer always starts in safe mode now.
Am I the only one having this problem. I have sent the error messages to Apple, but have not seen any updates that might address this issue.
I now have to turn off the sleep function which don't seem right to me. Any advice would be appreciated.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • Will all my files be saved on my Mac after I upgrade? Because I do not have an external drive.

Will all my files be saved on my Mac when I upgrade? Because I do not have an external drive.

Upgrading should not damage your content, however, it is strongly recommended that you make a current backup on an external drive just in case something goes wrong.  I have never had to use a restore but always have a backup just in case.

  • Time Machine will not back up external photo drive

Time Machine will not back up external photo drive, slightly different format, one case sensitive the other not. How do I resolve. Bought new external drive same format as TM in the hope  that I could copy the files from photo drive but that will not copy all files  as it is saying file already there. Again the case sensitive issue...
Paranoid about losing  1Tb of photos all cataloged in LR5
Possible solutions I have looked at but not yet tried.
Use the new 2Tb drive to make a new TM backup then reformat the old 4Tb drive the same as Photo drive.
Then do a complete backup of all files and photodrive to TM.
A lot of work, USB 2, so if any one has a simpler answer I would love to hear.

What message did you get? You should never change permissions (or anything else) on a Time Machine drive -- TM does that for you.
Start with #C2 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.

  • IMac will not acknowledge my external hard drives anymore

both I have connected w/ Firewire 400, and it used to recognize them with no problem. Now it is not acknowledging them. Any tips?

I am having the same problem with acomdata 250G firewire only drive. It used to mount fine. I was able to boot from it and work from it. Now I get an error that the imac doesn't recognize the drive. If I click 'initialize', i get disk utility, which spins but does not do anything until i force quit.
The drive seems to remount on reboot, or the first time I plug it in after rebooting, but once I unmount it or turn it off, it will not remount.
The drive is a clone of my imac hard drive. I erased and partitioned it with disk utility before cloning with carbon copy cloner.

  • C50-AST2NX2 will not read internal hard drive in external box

Purchased HGST (Hitachi) Deskstar 3.5 in. 3 TB internal drive and put it in a StarTech external drive box (that claims to work for up to 4 TB drives).  When I fired it up, computer loaded up the driver just fine, but Windows Explorer does not show the drive.  Swapped the internal drive into another StarTech box (which had a Hitachi 500 GB internal drive in it, and worked fine), same problem; swapped USB cables, same problem.  Plugged the StarTech box into my old Toshiba L455 Satellite computer, didn't work there either (the 500 GB internal drive worked fine there, also). Thinking the new drive was bad, ordered another; just hooked it up, and - Same Problem!  Saw another thread about another drive not being recognized, and that the problem was that the drive was a USB 3.0.  Tried in this computer's USB 3.0; still doesn't work.  I couldn't determine if the new 3TB was a 3.0 or 2.0 USB.  So what do I do now?  The other thread mentioned a Y-cable, so could get power from 2 USB ports; which ones-the two 2.0 ports?  This is frustrating, and sure could use some help and/or advice. Thanks.
    9/28/13 Update:
Wow, 49 people have looked at this, and NO ONE could think of a solution?  I'm disappointed.
I had a techie come over, and she figured that it was the chipset on my Toshiba (supposedly a brand-new computer-must have been an older model, though the actual box was new) that was the problem; it was so old, it wouldn't allow any drive higher than 2TB.  We tried downloading updates to the chipset; no good.  What I'll end up doing is buying a NAS enclosure (bought it yesterday, as a matter of fact, from Newegg, a Synology DS212J enclosure, based on the compatibility of my existing 3TB drive (Synology has a list of compatible drives for it enclosures on its site)), and add the 3TB drive as a network drive.  I then purchased a 2TB Hitachi drive off Amazon (again getting a compatible drive from the Synology site) to fill the existing StarTech enclosure.  The DS212J is a two-bay enclosure, so I can add another 3 TB drive later on.  That should take care  of my storage needs for some time to come.  Later.

Answer has been found.  The internal drive SATA cable was replaced and the system is now working correctly.
