LR 4.1 - Book Disappears

I have been working on a book over the past few weeks. I finally had it pretty much the way I wanted - 48 pages and over 140 images. On a final runthru, I noticed an image that I wanted to improve. I selected it in the filmstrip, went to the Develop module, made the changes, and returned to the Book module. Book was gone. The cover was still there, and the first image in the book, but it was now 2 pages instead of 48. I'm going to be very reluctant to try that again unless someone can help me understand what went wrong. Thanks
Colin

The numbers showing the allocations to the page are there still initally once the bug occurs, but they eventually dissapear once the 'book' realises that none of the pages have any photos now. Like I said using text was the only factor I could see that made the error occur. Can anybody say they weren't using text in their photobook and this happened still? double
This image attached is an example of what I would have had done on a page before it crash and lose everything
I'd have maybe 10 double page spreads like this. Always using that 2 image and 1 text box layout on one of the spread pages.
I believe it occured when I perhaps went to the develop module to edit a photo and come back.
When this happened the screen would go blank and I wouldn't be able to see anything in the book module, not even a blank layout. Just all the tool/menu bars around.
I would then have to restart lightroom and when it openned back up all books would revert to default state.

  • Address book disappear, Application Support folder can not be opened

My address book disappear from my MacPro, I know it is in the User Library-Application Support folder, but when I try to open that folder, it has a red tag on the folder and it said I have no Authority to open that folder, I am the only one using this machine, never have this problem.  And it will not allow me to restore the address book from Time Machine back to this folder.  What's wrong? I think I need to figure out why it wont let me open the Application Support folder, could anyone help? thanks.
One Symptom:  when I run the address book App, and try to import  address file, the Menu bar- File-the Import dialog was greyed-out and can not be used.

Could you please check the Sharing &permissions of these two folders (command +I). Check to see if you have "Read&Write access to these folders. It should be your user name with read&write privileges.
You will have to open the lock on the bottom right and it will request the admin password. Should your name not be there, select it by clicking on the plus sign on the bottom right and selecting your user name. Select Read&Write privilege and under the gear wheel beside the plus and minus signs,Make sure you apply to enclosed items.
It sounds like you somehow got them buggered. Rebuilding the permission table should of cleared up the problem. This could be a case of booting with your install DVD and rebuilding permissions from there.
                                                            Food for thought.
Next time you even think of modifying anything in you user library, Duplicate the whole folder and then you have a reference to go by. Just make sure that it is deleted after you are finished. This should be a standard step when troubleshooting. Changing something.....make a copy.

  • Iphoto book disappeared

is there a file for a created iphoto book? i created a book and later when i opened iphoto, it just said loading book and it never loaded. the pictures are still in the library but the book is gone. is there any way to find it now??

welcome to the apple user to user assistance forums
did you have any problems before the book disappeared?
iPhoto books can be between 20 and 100 pages (10 to 50 sheets of paper) - you can not go below the minimum or above the maximum so that is not the problem
Books do not really exist - they are virtual things that exist only in the iPhoto database - so you can never see them except using iPhoto
Quit iPhoto and depress the option (alt) and command (apple) keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild the library from the last automatic database backup

  • URGENT !!! Book disappeared. Need help.

    Hi,
I have been working on a book in Lightroom continuously for the past 7 days. When I say continuosly I really mean 24 / 7. I took my vacation time in order to work on this project.
As I was working on Lightroom today on this book it simply disappeared all of sudden. I can't see it. I do have a back up of my catalog from several days ago but reverting to this back-up means that I would have do redo approximately 80% of the book and will not have the time to do that.
What could have possibly happened ? How can a book I have been working on in the book module for the past 7+ days and that contains approximately 200 pages simply disappear ?
I want to believe that the book is still there and that there is a way to retrieve it while returning Lightroom to the same state it was in before the book disappeared.
How can I restore my book ? Do any of you have any idea as to what happened and how to fix it ? This is urgent and very important.
    Thank you in advance.

    John and all other members,
I wanted to follow up on this thread. I have been waiting for the results of this experiment in order to post my views here. I just received the Blurb book I ordered yesterday and would like to share some of my findings as well as some questions or concerns. Since this is an older thread I will also post this as another post or thread so others can read it and provide their input in case they miss it here.
First, after the catastrophic failure with the book I had created in Lightroom's book module (I lost a book that was nearly finished and contained approximately 220 pages) I was able to recover an early back-up done by Lightroom with the initial 60 pages of the book. I exported the pages as JPEGs following John's helpful advice and instructions. The pages were exported as JPEG's with 300 dpi and compression set to the highest level of quality.
After that I downloaded Blurb's InDesign template for the same book size I had created in Lightroom (in my case the large landscape, 10" x 13"). I was able next to place the JPEG images on the first 60 pages of my InDesign book and then just continued from there. The JPEG images were placed on a layer of their own. Next I locked that layer so that no changes could be made by accident and created additional layers for the other elements. I continued to place my images on the subsequent pages (from page 61 forward) as well as to place additional elements such as text, image caption, page numbers and others. These elements were placed on the initial pages on layers above that containing the JPEG images exported from Lightroom. They were also placed above the image layer on the subsequent pages. When the book was finished I exported the book using the Blurb downloaded PDF export preset. The book was submitted as a PDF to book. The uploading took less time than I anticipated and, with the exception of the price (I wish it would be a bit more reasonable), everyting went very smoothly.
The book looks great. The hardcover makes it look like a book you would expect to find at your local Barnes & Noble store - really professional. In general I am quite impressed and the following are my observations:
    1. It's not a photographic quality book.
The book was a pictorial containing photos for the most part. The images are 'book quality' but not 'photo quality', if you know what I mean. It is not the quality you would expect from even a low cost Epson photo printer but looks like photos you would find on your typical printed book. Most of my images were either 300 dpi or higher. InDesign has a nice feature that allows you to place an image on a page and then reduce its size. As the size is reduced you can see the resolution increasing on one of its menus. The resolution should have been enough to produce high quality images but I suspect the process has to do with the printing process rather than the resolution (registration?, others?).
    2. The images appear darker.
The images were in general darker than they appeared when the book was created. I know there are differences between both media - computer screen is emissive and paper is reflective. However, I had hoped that the printing process would take this into account, including the brightness of the paper, and make proper adjustments so that the book would look as close as possible to its screen counterpart. This is clearly not the case.
Is there a scientific way to address this ? Is there a calculate way to increase brightness prior to submitting a book for printing that would compensate for this phenomenon ? If not, is this more art than science and one must 'guess' the loss and increase brightness at will ?
    3. The paper looks great but affects (sometimes negatively) the viewing experience.
I chose the most expensive paper Blurb offers. It is the Proline Pearl Photo Paper and it has a very nice, soft, matte finish I like. The downside is that it is not very reflective and further compounds the 'darker' feel. In addition I think that its 'white' isn't really white due to the characteristics of the paper. It is probably more like an off-white or light gray. Again, it would be nice to know if there is a scientific way to address this. One would expect the press to utilize some kind of algorithm that takes all these variables into account, including the paper individual qualities. Is there a way to do this ?
    4. The hardcover looks really nice but I can already see fingerprints on it. The cover isn't offered with a choice of UV coating, which would be nice to protect it and make this a longer term investment. I can see this book ageing faster if care is not exercised in its handling.
Having said all of the above I must say that my experience has, for the most part, been a positive one. The book looks quite nice. Adobe InDesign has proven to be a terrific tool for this type of job and there can definitely be good integration between Lightroom's book module (once that thing is working the way it should) and InDesign. I didn't notice any difference in quality between the images exported from Lightroom and those I manually placed in InDesign.
I wish Blurb would offer more choices and that I few issues would be addressed:
    1. More paper choices.
    2. UV coating for cover (and also for pages).
    3. A reliable method to compensate for brightness so images on books don't appear dark.
    4. Lightroom export to InDesign document for those who wish to add, refine or edit the book in InDesign.
Thanks John for your help and for pointing the right direction.

  • Hundreds of Books disappeared during migration from iTunes to iBooks. Where are they?

After the Mavericks upgrade, I tried to access my iBook library (containing hundreds of EPUB and PDF books, almost all of which weren't purchased from Apple) via iTunes.
I got the message to import them via iBooks (v 1.0). I did so, and all but two books disappeared. I was told by an Apple Genius that a fix was in the works. So I waited.
I installed iBooks 1.0.1, and redid the "Move Books from iTunes". None of my books were found - they'd all been removed from iTunes by the broken version of iBooks.
So where did iBooks 1.0 put my books? How can I get them back?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    They may well be lost.
I had the same, the whole snyc process over to iBooks did not work at all. Apple keeping quiet about it, because its such a major screw-up.
Luckily enough, I had a backup of all my pdf-books, so I imported them manually to iBooks. Some people suggested the books may be buried somewehre deep in your iTunes music library.  Well, they certianly weren't over here.
A true mess, and fully consistent with the recent f*** ups in iPhoto  (library sharing via Wifi has disappeared) and the much talked about missing features in Pages and Numbers (never used those cripples anyway as I need to do serious word porcessing and calculating, so these "kids-apps" are no alternative to Word and Excel)

  • Text in purchased book disappeared after update

I just updated my iPad to 5.1.1 and iBooks to 2.1.1.  After updating and synching to my iMac, I opened a book that I had purchased one month ago and had been reading.  All the text had disappeared.  I had nothing but blank pages except for the title page and the table of contents.  I went to purchased to try to download it again but the "purchased" tab was grayed out.  I couldn't find a way to activate it.  I tried resetting by holding in the sleep and on/off buttons for 10 - 15 seconds but it didn't change anything.  I tried re-synching with my iMac -- my books are backed up on it -- but that didn't restore the text either.  Can anyone help?

Did you delete the book before you tried to download it again?
In bookshelf view - tap the edit button - tap on the book and then tap delete. In list view - swipe across the book and the red dlete button will opo up.
Perhaps quitting iBooks completely and restarting the iPad would help as well.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Font Book Disappeared - Help!

I'm not sure how or why, but Font Book seems to have disappeared from my Applications folder and my Mac in general. Is there any place I can go to download the Font Book application??

No, you cannot download OS X components, but you can reinstall them from your OS X Installer DVD. See the following:
How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • Why did my Address Book disappear and how can I get it back?

The Address Book application has simply disappeared on two of my MacBook Pros. I thought the first one (work laptop) was a fluke but now that it's happened on my own MacBook I think something is wrong.
The app is no longer available anywhere on my hard drive. It's as if I threw it away, but I didn't. I can't open any associated files, so I don't even know if the data has been preserved.
Can anyone help me figure out why it disappeared, where it went, and how to get it back, short of reinstalling OS X 10.5.8 (the version I'm currently using)? I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard (not Lion -- no one seems to like it), but I'd like to fix this problem first. And I can't upgrade on the work MacBook because I have to use the enterprise-approved OS version.
    Thanks!

Amy, is there a chance they could both be Syncing to another device that has the data erased?
What are the sizes & modification dates on the files you found?
Could be many things, we should start with this to be safe, though 2 different ones would seem unlikely to be this problem...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Albums and books disappear

Our school is using network home folders and iPhoto 8. Since the upgrade we have a lot of students who will lose there albums and books in iPhoto. They have disappeared while the student actually has iPhoto open. We have tried rebuilding the library with no luck. The only thing we can do is restore there iPhoto from tape backup and that way they lose any work they had done since the last backup.

No we have not upgraded the student computers to 10.5 as of yet. The issue started when we upgraded them to iLife 8. It would appear that it is database corruption, however I find it hard to believe that they would not build in a transaction system to keep partial updates from happening due to connection loss or other things that may interrupt the writing process.

  • Can anyone explain why music and books disappeared from my phone

My partner and I both have Iphone 4s. Recently I noticed a  books collection app (I had purchased) was greying out on my phone. Didn't (stupidly) pay attention to it at the time. Next thing I realise this book collection and all my music has disappeared from my phone. The book collection is still on My computer but will not let my partner, who is the computer person in our house, return it to my I phone. The music has disappeared completely. Some song I had purchased others I transferred from favourite CDs.
    Can anyone help?

Because Apple has inexplicably removed support for audiobook chapters in its iOS 5.0 music player on iPad. It makes no sense, but that's what they did. Hopefully it'll return in a future update.

  • Augh! Half the contacts in my Address Book disappeared!

    Dear Folks,
I just upgraded my laptop from OS 10.4.11 to 10.6.3. I launched Address Book this morning and fully HALF of the contact information has disappeared. That's something like 300 address "cards" just vanished.
What happened?!?! If I can't recover these from within Snow Leopard, which would be best, can you folks tell me the names and paths for the files that Address Book uses to store the 'cards?' I have my pre-Snow Leopard backup and I can go to it to retrieve those files.
Worst case scenario is that I have to reboot into Tiger from an external drive, pull in those old contact files, and manually re-enter that information into Snow Leopard's address book. Hopefully, there's a better way. But regardless, I need to get that contact info back.
    HELP!
    pax / Ctein

    Dear Macnewbie and Barney,
Thank you very much! Wiping out everything in the AddressBook folder except for addressBook.data did the trick. The app regenerated my complete contact list-- didn't even have to resort to my backups.
BTW, Barney, Macnoob got the 'solved' credit because I didn't realize I could credit only one of you and I checked off his message first. It was my intent to give both of your credits-- apparently, not allowed.
As an aside, here's a nice little trick when you want to preserve files while preventing an app from accessing them. Compress them with the Finder. That converts them to a zip file that the app can't use, and you can delete the originals without irreversibly losing the data.
It's a trick I started using on PC's, where there can be "path" instructions that let applications access data file in all sort of places you'd not expect. After chasing my tail on a few projects where I thought I'd copied data to an inaccessible location and hadn't, I started doing this.
    Anyway, thanks again.

  • My Address Book disappeared

I connected my iPhone today, as I usually do to sync it into my MacBook Pro. I went to sleep for a while, when I woke up and picked up the phone, I went into my Address Book, and suddenly I had NO NUMBERS STORED. Every number in it, except for one, and Apple's # was long gone. When I went to check on my MBP, it turns out that the Address Book didn't have any info either! I didn't erase anything, and I DO NOT understand where it went. I have crucial information from clients there. PLEASE HELP!

Actually, that behavior is not unusual at all. What happened is this:
    1. Your contact records in the Address Book mysteriously disappeared.* This can happen for several reasons, notably crashes of Mail or the Address Book itself. It can also happen as the result of synchronization via .Mac Sync where this phenomenon occurred on another synchronized Macintosh desktop or portable computer.
    2. Not knowing that these records had effectively been 'deleted' from your Address Book, you synchronized your iPhone using iTunes. The deletions were pushed through your framework, with the predictable result that matching records elsewhere were deleted. That's exactly what is supposed to happen during a synchronization event.
Here is an explanation of how this technology works.
*To protect yourself in the future, periodically back up the contents of your Address Book by using the option to do so available under the File menu. It's labeled Back up Address Book. There is a similar option for your calendaring data in iCal. In the event of a catastrophic failure like this, you can very quickly restore your records in either application.
In addition, in an effort to 'recover' your records, you can do this:
    • quit Address Book if it is running
    • locate the AddressBook.data file here…
    Macintosh HD:Users:<username>:Library:Application Support:Address Book
    • drag that file to the Desktop or the Trash
    • duplicate the AddressBook.data.previous file in the same location, and remove the .previous suffix
    • launch AddressBook
Your records may appear as a result of this simple file manipulation, though they most likely will not. At the point that you have no other alternatives, however, it's worth the effort to 'recover' them in this manner.

  • Third-party books disappeared EVERYWHERE! Only iTunes books were left.

Hello, I've had a big wonderful library of books, which were downloaded not from iTunes, in my Itunes books folder.
After updtating to Mavericks and using new iBook on my Mac, everything that wasn't concidered to be from Itunes was deleted, and disappeared on all my devices.
All the books mysteriously disappeared in my "books" folder; however, the only things that were left were PDFs and "Purchased" from iTunes books.
If Apple made easy adding "Third-party books" for people, why is Apple making bugs in order to make people byuing stuff on iTunes?
What if books were purchased on other online stores because it's cheaper, and Apple deleted all that using "iBooks"--useless MacApp--, who is going to pay for all that?
Why can't we use iTunes App anymore for books syncing and automatic book import to my "books" folder in "iTunes Media" folder?
I think soon Apple is going to be attempting on our "Third-party" music, movies, etc.

    Sorry about your loss.
I've about given up on iBooks on all my platforms.  I have Calibre on the Mac, which is capable of converting lots of formats to epub (which iBooks can use) and then using Stanza on my iPad as a reader.  I complete the sync using Files on the iPad/Phone, but I think that Calibre can also sync directly.  The Tech support folks for Files say it won't be updated in the future, so you stand the risk that it won't work at some point, but for now, it's a great solution for me.

I'd like to get a new ibook. I've read all the logic board failure things here about the G3 versions. But besides that what were the main differences between the G3 and g4 version? Speed obviously, but what else? Or is a G4 the same basically as G3 w
