LR 4.4.1 with Photo Mechanic 5

In Photo Mechanic, I select a quantity of images and mark them RED.  When I import them into LR, the RED usually follows the image, so that I know which ones to edit.  Now, perhaps since updating to OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), the color tag is not visible in LR.  I spent hours on the phone with Bob at Photo Mechanic and he couldn't figure this out.  Is there a fix in LR preferences?

Maybe Photo Mechanic is using the uppercase RED and Lightroom is using mixed case Red.  The labels are not stored in the metadata as colors but as text labels.  You can change these labels in Library Module using Metadata/Color Label Set/Edit but it would be better to change it in Photo Mechanic.  This is just a shot in the dark as I didn't test to see if the labels are case sensitive or positive how this works exactly.

  • Photo Mechanic Metadata & Small Thumbnails

I'm new to Aperture and I'm using V1.5.
I imported some photos that had metadata added in Photo Mechanic. The thumbnails for the imported files are very small in Aperture (288x192 pixels). Even when I send the file from Aperture to an external editor (PhotoShop) the file is sent as a small image. For example, a Canon 1Ds raw file is sent to PhotoShop as a 288x192 pixel image!
If I process the raw through Adobe's DNG converter and then reimport the image, the the thumbnail looks as it should and transfers to external editor fine. However, the metadata no longer shows up in Aperture (although I can see it is still there if I look at the file with Bridge or Photo Mechanic).
Once the DNG file is in Aperture, if I quit Aperture and then edit the metadata in PhotoMechanic again, the little thumbnail is back when I restart Aperture.
JPEG files and unmodified RAW files have the proper sized thumbnails. Building previews does not change a thing.
    Anybody else seeing this?

Thank you for responding, jrg_uk. I have filed a feedback report with Apple. BTW, Bridge and Lightroom don't have the same problem rendering a preview from a Photo Mechanic modified file.
I posted my same question on Photo Mechanic's forum and received this response:
ME: ...a Canon 1Ds raw file is sent to PhotoShop as a 288x192 pixel image!
PM: That's the exact size of the thumbnail inside the 1Ds TIF file. Aperture, (actually ImageIO which Aperture uses to render RAW files) has a fairly naive parser for some file formats. Files that have been modified at all render ImageIO useless with some files. We have filed numerous bug reports with Apple on this issue and only a small portion have been addressed. When Aperture exports a file for editing, it creates a new file and in this case this new file has lost all of the RAW data. It is no longer present due in part to this bug.
ME: Imported photos without IPTC data added with Photo Mechanic do not have this problem.
PM: That's because those files pass right through their naive parser.
ME: If I process the problem raw file through Adobe's DNG converter...
PM: Once again their naive parser gets tripped up by simple modifications to the file. We'll have to file a bug on their DNG parser too!
Evidently, the workaround for now is to use Photo Mechanic's XMP sidecar setting workflow.

  • How can I open images in Photo Mechanic with AppleScript

I need an AppleScript that displays a chosen folder of images in a Photo Mechanic as a Contact Sheet.
A FileMaker script – with the help of a plug-in called Troi-File-Plug-in 2.8.2 - already allows me to navigate to the folder which opens on the desktop. The final step would be for the script to display the images in Photo Mechanic, where they can be viewed, captioned, edited etc. (The process can be performed manually by dragging the images onto the Photo Mechanic icon).

Whenever I want a script to open a file with a certain app I use (e.g. FireFox)
    set thefile to choose file
do shell script "open -a /Applications/Firefox.app " & quoted form of POSIX path of thefile
if the app's name contains special characters or blanks you will have to quote it e.g.
    set thefile to choose file

  • Photo Mechanic 4.6.9 Not Working With Mac OSX

I have Mac OS 10.4.11, and suddenly Photo Mechanic 4.6.9 stopped opening a few hours ago.  Last night it worked and this morning suddenly the shortcut icon disappeared and when I try to open from applications folder I get message saying this application cannot be used with Mac OSX!  I need to use this application for work so I really need to get this working.  Help!

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Also, could it have possibly auto updated to a later version?

  • How to export images with Project Name to be visable by Photo Mechanic.

    Hello all,
I am trying to create another complete set of my images, that can be edited by outside programs (Photo Mechanic and/or Lightroom). I am doing this by exporting the images out of a managed library. I want the Aperture "*Project name*" and Rating fields to be passed to Photo Mechanic. And then I want PM to be able to do queries on the Metadata fields containing the Aperture Project Name and Rating. My intention is to use Photo Mechanic to rename the images and relocate the images but still keep track of the Rating and Project Name.
In Aperture, when I add a custom metadata item under IPTC and export the image, that custom metadata item does not show up in PM or Bridge for that matter.
How can I export images and have the Rating and *Project Name* be exported and visible in PM or LR or Bridge?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dick B.

There is not an easy way but Ian Wood's tool might help you out.
Personally I would just use the "subfolder format" drop down options available in all of the export and relocate dialogs to sort them into directories that are based on Aperture project name - easy enough considering those other tools use file system based folders for there organization structure anyway.

  • Can I save Projects in their entirety (with photos) for future printing?

Hi - I have 15 iPhoto books that I would like to have printed. I have built these books with photos selected from a group of roughly 12,000 in my iPhoto library. I would like to have the books printed and then archive my photos to DVDs and delete them from my computer in order to be able to load on new photos. Is there any way to export my "Projects" to a DVD such that if, for some reason, one of the books that I had printed got damaged, I could easily reinsert the DVD and upload the project for printing again (with all of the photo and photo edits/cropping fully intact)? Given what I have been able to glean so far, it seems as though there is no mechanism for backing up projects for development say 5 years hence without keeping all of one's photos on a drive together. For me, this is not feasible... Do you have any suggestions? Many thanks for any help you are able to offer!

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

First of all, why did you say yes to Nero Back up before researching what it does with files already on the HDD? When I install Nero, the Back Up is the first thing I disable, it is a nagging pain, there are much better backup programs available. There are several file recovery programs out there to recover deleted files, that is, if that is what happened. Also, if you haven't overwritten the files, so you should be able to find them.

  • Combining a security update with Photos?

I am confused. Generally, if there is an available update, esp. a security update, either Apple tells me or just goes ahead and does it. For no particular reason, I looked to see if there were any available updates. I found 2 or 3, depending on how you count. The first 1 (or 2) said it was a security update. Obviously I want to do all security updates and that leads to my confusion over not being notified. However, since that update included the 'move' from iPhoto to Photos, I was even more confused. I was unaware that a change was coming and was surprised that it was combined with the security update. By now I have forgotten what the other update was and it might have been minor.
I had a very difficult time downloading and installing these updates. It was so difficult that I went to bed in tears thinking that my iMac was trashed. I followed the instructions as to download and install as well as the restarts in the proper order. But whenever the system attempted to restart or just start from the old 'turn it off and back on' trip, I ended up with a blank (gray/white) screen. I turned the iMac off and don't remember if I unplugged it then went to bed. When I did get back to it the next morning and turned the iMac on, it showed me the Yosemite 'icon' and everything seemed ok, except for the fact that I now had Photos instead of iPhoto. (Note: I have never been a fan of iPhoto but that is beside the point.)
I have not had the courage to open Photos beyond seeing that it had instructions to go thru. As I did not and still have not had the time to read thru the instructions, I'm very annoyed that a major change was included with a security update. I've been reading comments in the Community and am seeing that people are having issues.
So I suppose I'm maybe just venting, in which case I apologize. But I would like to know why I had not been notified that there was any available update, especially a security update. And I would also like to know why said security update was combined with Photos. (I know that later I will have some specific questions about Photos based on what I'm seeing others ask.)
    iMac (21.5-inch, mid 2011) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3

There was no major change included in a  security update. The was an update to the Operating System. Like all OS updates it includes several items, including some security elements and other fixes too. If you look at the update section of the app store there is a report telling you exactly what is involved in every update. This one was no exception. Go there now and look. It explains what is new. There is a link, as part of that, to a web page. For instance
About the OS X Yosemite v10.10.3 Update - Apple Support
You really should read these before every update. They are the mechanism by which Apple tell you what's going to be different and change. If you don't read this then don't be surprised if you are unaware of changes.
You were not "moved" to Photos. It was installed. iPhoto is still installed. You can use it if you choose. Or you can move over to the new app.
There are always issues with new software for people, there are always issues for people with updates.

  • Aperture vs Photo Mechanic

just recently got a stringer contract....the paper uses photo  mechanic to caption....The fields they want filled are  Caption, Object Name, Headline, Photographer.
I sent a test image and used Aperture- filled in Byline (Headline) Credit (Photographer) Caption (caption)....  Does anyone have ANY experience they might share in terms of does this match with PM fields? I have not gotten a response from photo editor yet, but I have an assignment Saturday and I wanted to know if I need to invest in PM.....I really want to continue with Aperture since I have about 40,000 images at this point...

    Hi Howard,
take a look at this: http://www.controlledvocabulary.com/imagedatabases/iptccoremapped.pdf
It is a good site for keywording too.
It's a thing that I hate: every apps has their own terms! Why they don't go for a standard?
    Anyway...

  • Lightroom vs Photo Mechanic

I shoot weddings and would love to know how to get lightroom to run like Photo Mechanic during my culling phase.  It just takes so long for lightroom to render the shots before I can check sharpness etc.  I hate having to use Photo Mechanic to cull then re open all of it in Lightroom.  Anyone know how to get lightroom running faster for this phase without me altering my images in other software.  Perhaps Adobe my look at a module in Lightroom that works like Photo Mechanic.
    Here are my Specs
    Lightrrom 5.3
    imac 27inch
Processor  3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)

My experience is that culling in Lightroom's library module is pretty-darn fast *if/when* library previews are up to date.
I don't know how it compares to PhotoMechanic since I've never used it. But, the keys for maximum culling speed in Lr are:
    * Optimized performance when previews built (stepping from photo to photo is nearly instantaneous for me, OK, there's a noticeable lag, but it's a *small* fraction of a second. I dunno how to do help with this if it's not already happening for you.
    * Assuring library previews are up to date. They stay up to date unless you make changes, which, unfortunately, I like to be able to do whilst culling, but if you can find a way to keep those two pieces separate, i.e. cull and only cull with up-to-date previews, it's pretty fast.
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • Lightroom 3 Error Working With Photos That Work With Other Apps

    My Setup:
    Lightroom 3.3 for Mac
    iMac OS X 10.6.6
    The problem:
Lightroom is unable to work with photos it used to be able to work with. In the Library Module I get the error message "There was an error working with the photo." In the Develop Module I get the message "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged."
Now I know the photos are ok because I can view them in other apps including Photoshop CS5
And these photos used to work in Lightroom.
I am suspicious it has something to do with Picasa, which I use to catalog faces. I have compared the exif data and the photos that don't work have an extra value called "Image Unique Id" and it appears to be a long hexadecimal number.  Also, the software version has been modified to indicate "Picasa".
It bothers me that a world class product like LIghtroom is not robust enough to work on these files when everything else I have tried does work.  The problem is LIghtroom is the primary tool in my workflow.
So has anybody seen this and know of a way to fix it?

    @Pete -
Thanks for the feedback, but my I think my concern is valid.  Whatever Picasa is doing to the photo other apps like Apple Preview and CS5 can deal with it.  Lightroom cannot.  I am not explicitly modifying the files in Picasa just using Picasa to catalogue the faces.  So yes, I will quit using Picasa, but I still have hundreds (if not thousands) of photos that can no longer be processed by Lightroom and I need guidance on how to best recover these photos.
I didn't know whether the Image Unique Id is standard or not, but I do know it does not show up in the files that work, only in the files that do not work.  I just assumed that it was non-standard because I did not see it on functioning files.
Also, I would argue that Lightroom should be better able to handle this kind of situation instead of just not working.  Thanks again.

  • How to convert Sony camcorder 1080i AIC .mov files to work with Photos app?

I have a Sony SDR-HD10 camcorder from 2008. It records in 1080i format, and I exported to .mov using the Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM, Timecode format, 1920x1080; Color Profile HD (1-1-1); 2 channel audio.
I have 121 files totaling 105GB. These files all play fine in iMovie. BUT - when I open them in Quicktime X for Yosemite, it converts them into a file that is about twice the space on the drive. The resulting file is Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, Timecode, 1888x1062. It also resets the created and edited date/time.
I looked at each video and the resulting quality is about the same.
How can I convert these files into something that Photos will like, but not double in size?
Also, I should point out that I'm not certain I should be using Photos for movies. I used to use iPhoto for pictures, and iMovie for movies, but hardly ever cared to edit videos and thought iMovie was too bulky and confusing for general playback. With Photos, it will upload everything to the cloud (and I'm paying for it), so i can use Photos as my canonical source for all movies and pictures. I have iTunes Match, and my email is hosted by Google, so I'm getting closer to having everything in the cloud. so far, i haven't gone all in with Dropbox for documents, probably because I'm too paranoid about corruption on a remote device like that if there is any concurrent access.

Check out the export settings from iMovie. Your exporting in a very high grade format used for editing, you want a delivery format. Ask on the iMovie forum for more.

  • Keywords imported but don't show up with photos

I am not getting keywords to show up with imported photos. i've done a lot of searching on this and other forums to try to figure out what is different about my situation but to no avail. here's what I've deduced though:
the keywords will import if I deselect “Copy the items to the iPhoto Library”. But if I leave the default box checked", I will not get keywords associated with the photos.
(the rest of my discussion deals with a library where the imported photos ARE copied to the library)
Interestingly, the keywords ARE imported into iPhoto (if one looks at the keyword list); they just aren't attached to the photos (i.e. clicking <Get Info> shows no keywords, as opposed to them being there but just not showing up on the screen with the image). Most (but not all) of my imported photos show up in iPhoto without any keywords attached. Most Events are all-or-nothing; i.e. all the photos of the event either have keywords or don’t. At least one Event is a mix. I cannot make any sense as to why some do, as the ones that do will be part of an event that all the other photo's don't show the keywords; additionally, neither the ones with nor the ones without keywords share any common feature or change (e.g. edited, rotated, file type, keyword/tag name, etc.).
I'm a pretty basic user when it comes to photos (but with a fair amount of common sense and computer knowledge); not trying to do anything fancy here. I don't know much about photography, so I'm not manipulating photo settings on my camera and am not (purposefully/knowingly) manipulating the metadata directly from the file. So, I'm baffled as to why my system would be acting differently than any other "out of the box" iMac.
    In case it matters:
-- the photos being imported originated from a Windows-based PC and tagged by Adobe Photoshop Elements. I have the same problem regardless of whether I export them (using Photoshop) to a file on the iMac or directly import them over the network from the PC using iPhoto.
-- (Using iPhoto Library Manager) I created another iPhoto library to see if the same thing would happen with photos imported to a different library -- same problem. (BTW, I checked the new library's Keywords BEFORE I imported to make sure the keyword "library" wasn't somehow replicated from the previous library.)
-- In one of your forum discussions, you said that these “copies” would be in the “Originals” folder within the iPhoto package, right? If so, then they are the same size as the files being imported minus a few KBs, presumably due to the lack of associated keywords.
I assume that these "copied" files are suppose to retain their keyword/tag info. Any ideas why they aren't and/or what I can do about it? I tried rebuilding the database too but that didn't do any good. I'm figuring on trying to reimport everything again, but I fear I'll get the same result.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First try the simple fix: delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto and see if the keywords show up. If not, then launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
• If i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it as the option 'set up as new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos and ect?

if i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it to the option 'set up as a new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and log into my apple ID so i can just restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos, contacts, ect. and then later i can add contacts that i need/want instead of them restoring them from icloud?
The reason i asked this question is because i have been wondering this a lot ever since i got an exchange on this ipod (and ive only had it for a few weeks now) because my last ipod had a lot of problems. so after i restored my ipod with my computer/itunes, i downloaded apps that i wanted, and then when i went to the storage to see how much storage was left, it said 0 bytes. i was freaking out because i didnt know how that could be, i mean, cause like, that is impossible when i just 'purchased' it, that the space was full but i looked and all my pictures were on this ipod and i already put them on my computer so i dont need them anymore thats why i wanna reset it now so there is nothing on it so i can have more space for stuff to do and download on it.
it is updated to iOS 8 but that happened when i purchased it, so i didnt have a choice to update it even though i didnt want to update to iOS 8...
and i hope you understand my problem..
i would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if someone could tell me a solution to my problem!!! thank you so much!
    -sierra

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Hope this helps. Good luck. Cheers.

  • Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get?  Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).

    Apple is great!
Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get?  Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).
I compose an iMessage with the destination as my email address and I attach 2 photos I want on my PC.  I send them several times from my iPhone 5C but they never arrive. I look at my ipad later and realize that it's iMessage app is getting ( and swallowing) these emails. I then turn the ipad off.  Still can't get the photos through because iphone is now getting them on it's iMessage.  I turn off the iMessage feature and try to send photos from text msging.  Phone tells me it can't send photos unless iMessage it turned on.  What happened to regular MMS text messaging?  I go and try to send photos as an email attachment and see that there is no option to attach from the stupid email program.  I look up online to learn about the brave new world of apple attachments and send them.
Why is iMessage taking my incoming emails and then not making them available for my PC to get?
The email program on my iphone is not configured to remove messages from the server.
If iMessage is turned off I don't have the issue.
Why can I not send a text msg with photos when iMessage is turned off (but MMS is still on).

Did not work. I've selected iMessage to ON and left it. After a few hours I recieved a message "activation unsuccessful. Turn on iMessage to try again". This has been going on for the past 3 days.
