LR 5: Destination Folder Problem in Import Panel

When making a new  destination folder for import it does not appear in the folder list on  the right side of the import panel until the panel is closed down and  re-opened, at which point the images have to be reselected. Given the slow loading  thumbnail issue, already discussed here (and which I also raised) this is doubly time consuming at the moment.
Has any one else noticed this issue and does anyone know if it has been reported? I have also made bug reports on both issues.
Stephen

ADDENDUM to my reply: When I did my 'workaround', I found the images not in the last folder in the Destination panel (my folders are chronological - I organize my images by date taken), but in one above that (ie, not in June 14, but in June). But my scheme for manually moving them to the June 14 folder (which had been created within LR5, though LR5's Destination panel refused to recognize that fact) IN Windows Explorer, then Synchronizing in Library Module, worked very well.
However, for my next import, I did this: Outside of LR5, I created the folder I knew I'd need next (in this case, June 15). Then, within LR5, when I went to import the images, the Destination panel did see this folder. I think this is even easier -- if you can think ahead.
So this confirms that the Destination panel does not recognize folders created from WITHIN LR5 itself.
Also, please note that, while I also created a folder for my backup images from within LR5, that panel apparently had no trouble finding that folder and those images indeed did get placed where they should have been.

  • Folder problems - LR import is inconsistent

    I have all my photos stored on a network share. However, depending on how LR imports photos (from device, from disk etc.), it gets mixed case names for the folders, so I end up with multiple volumes under Folders, even though they are all the same ! Does anyone else see this or know how to fix it ?
    Example :
    \\SERVER\photos
    \\Server\Photos
    \\server\photos
    All of these are the same volume, yet LR displays them individually
    I'm using 64bit LR2.1 on Vista Ultimate
    Thanks

    > I wonder how many of the Lightroom insiders actually use Windows.
    Apparently the team is about 50/50 to 60/40.
    >My understanding is the Lightroom doesn't support the database being on a network share. I haven't seen anything to suggest that it can't import photos from a network share.
    This is correct. The catalog file should be on a local disk and images can be on network shares. There are however, quite a few issues with it, such as the the Photoshop integration not working right when the images are on a share and the one you have discovered here with the case issue which is a simple bug that is also present in the Mac version I believe.

  • Unable to customize folder name on import

    I'm using import for several cameras and I would like to have possibility to change 'Date Format' of destination folder name in import dialog:
    Yes, there are several formats, but it would be very useful to have possibility to define my own. E.g. instead of 2012-10-06 I would like to have 2012_10_06. Now I have to rename all my folders after import, which is not very comfortable. I think the best way to make this perfect would be possibility to use 'Filename Template Editor' (used for renaming files) for folder names too.
    Thank you.

    The date format options available in Lr import module are quite limited and not user configurable. However, all is not lost. Basically, you should create the folders as per your prefererred naming convention using the OS tools then drag the files from the card to these folders. In Lr import module you use the Add option rather than Coy or Move. OK, it's not as convient, but it is a lot less liable to fall foul of Lr's import limitations.

  • Import folder problems

    Ok - let's see if I can explain this - I keep all my images on a separate internal hard disk and they are all organized by date. My structure might be 2007-january-january15. I want to continue this process - so I download my images directly from my flash card to the appropriate folder on my storage disk. I then want to import them into lightroom keeping the photos in their location. I can not figure out how to structure the Lightroom library folder structure so that when I import images from the storage place the lightroom folder structure matches the disk folder structure. I have tried creating a folder in Lightroom and "moving" the images to that folder, but then the folder disappears from my hard drive. (Where does it go?) How to I import images from my hard drive into a similarly named and structured folder in Lightroom?
    I hope this is clear.

    First. PC or Mac? I have had no touble with this sort of folder structure and import on my Mac from Beta 1.
    Are all you images in one major folder structure? Maybe to start, for those image already in Export XMP for all of them. Then remove all of them from the dB, not the HD. Rearange them on the HD as you want (if some are out of place) and then Import them by designating the Top Parent folder. This is easiest if the top is empty, except for the year folders, one. No images.
    Import by reference in place and LR will keep your existing file structure intact. When later adding more files, designate one higher folder containing new images than the bottom one. With 'Ignore Duplicate Images 'Checked' LR will import only the new ones, again adding to and maintaining your folder structure.

    Hi Paul  What are your system specs. Raw files are usually quite large so the process could be draining your memory (RAM). Are you importing from camera or from your hard drive. In the case of the latter try importing one folder at a time or in smaller batches. You can select files and drag and drop into the organizer. You must drop on the dark gray area between the left and right side panels (if both panel are visible).

  • Destination Folder not showing content after Export

    I am running in a problem with 3.2 when I export Canon Raw images from one folder to another. What is happening is that post the completion of the export the destination folder will either show only part of the exported images, or none at all. This applies to the folder file count and what is visible in the destination folder in terms of visible images. IHowever, when I open up Windows Explorer or BreezeBrowser Pro, the content of the folder is correct. Here are the solutions I have tried:
    1) Right-click on the destination folder and attempt to select "Synchronize Folder". However, it is grayed out.
    2) Refresh the database and restart LR. This has not impact. However, "Synchronize Folder" is not availabe and it will show the missing quantity so then and if I pick "Synchronize" it will bring up the Import box and I will then click on import and now the destination folder shows the correct number of images and they are visible after open it.
    3) When all else fails I do a repain install and that seems to correct the problem for a while.
    Despite all these remedies the issue eventually reoccurs.
    I am running Win 7 64 with 8G of ram and plenty of HD space. Anybody seen this behavior and if yes, found any solutions? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

    Rachel
    Sounds like a damaged database file.
    Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
    To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
    Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
    In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
    Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
    Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
    Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
    When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
    In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards

  • A3 - problems with import?

    ok i can't find an answer to this, so decided to post here.
    Basically when i got A3, i imported an album:
    Destination: New Project
    Project Name: Miami Boatshow
    Store Files: Pictures
    Subfolder: Project Name
    This worked great... as expected, it created a folder in home directory >pictures>Miami Boatshow.
    Now however, whenever i import using the same settings, but obviously changing the "Project Name", Aperture decides it wants to store it in the "Miami Boatshow" folder. I tried deleting the folder, and try importing again, but it RECREATES the "Miami Boatshow" folder and chucks the files in there!
    anyone got any clue what's going on? or is this a common problem?

    That package, is not guaranteed to be avaialable in future releases of Java, which is why you shouldn't really use it.
    If you have Java 1.3.x, then your program should work without any problems....however, if you have 1.4.x, then it might have already been removed from the libraries.

  • Problem with importing images into time lapse

    Hi
    I am having problems with importing still images into a time lapse sequence in photoshop and would appreciate any suggestions!
    I want to create a time lapse using a sequence of still photographs.  All file names are sequentially name/numbered.
    I am using the Motion workspace, and have followed all of the instructions available.
    Create correct sized new document (film & video).
    Create video timeline.
    Set frame rate.
    Choose 'create new video layer from file'.
    Point to first image in the folder where the images are stored.
    At this point, no matter what I have tried, I receive this error:
    I have tried different sized new documents; tried jpegs and tiffs; tried different frame rates, tried different qualities and sizes of images; tried selecting the last image instead of the first (one recommendation).
    If I use the 'Place' command from the file menu (and check the 'image sequence' box) instead of selecting 'Create new video layer' from the layers panel, it loads fine and I can still render the video.
    It took me most of a day to discover this workaround, but every other reasonable 'how-to' that I can find says that I should be able to do it by opening files into a new video layer and it seems as though the new video layer option may give me more alternatives.
    Anyone have any idea why I could be having these problems?
    I have reset Photoshop, deleted the settings file, even reinstalled it.  I use 64-bit on windows 7 and even installed the 32-bit to try that, but all with the same result.
    Stuart

    Unfortunately, yes--I've tried it that way over and over, and every other way I could think of.  The files are all in one folder, and I've converted the raw files to both tiffs and jpegs.  I even tried converting them to jpegs at the final pixel dimensions.  Each folder that I have used only contains one type of file, and they are all part of the same sequence and sequentially numbered.  I have even tried renumbering the files with numbers first, numbers last, numbers only, moving underscores.  I moved the files from my external hard-drive to the desktop ... I have a lot less hair than I had only a few days ago!
    I've looked at a few other tutorials that outline the same sequence of steps, and tried them over and over, and then changing one step at a time to make sure that it was not a single step that caused the problem.
    The thing that is really bugging me is that it works fine if I use the different approach of using the place command instead.
    Anyway, thanks for all of your time.  It's going to be a lot simpler to just stick with 'place' command and I will likely do that, but I tend take things like this as a challenge.  I like to know WHY it won't work for me.  Sometimes it seems that there is just no logical explanation!

  • No way to set specific destination folder in Log & Transfer?

    I'm planning a feature film which will be shot on weekends this fall.  Within my Capture Scratch folder, I've set up sub-folders with the filming dates (Oct1, Oct15, etc) where footage shot on those dates will reside.
    I'm using Panasonic's "P2CMS" program to ingest the original MXF (P2 card) media from a Panasonic HVX HD camera into FCP 7.  P2CMS lets me verify that contents copied correctly and lets me select a destination folder (Oct1, Oct15, etc).  However, when I later use FCP's Log and Transfer to transcode the footage into QT files, it doesn't allow me to designate specific sub-folders within the Capture Scratch in which to place it.  I'd like to have the QTs reside with the original MXFs in the same dated sub-folder, and later I'll delete the original MXFs.  I've consulted manuals, forums, etc, and can't find a solution.  Is there really no way to designate specific sub-folders within Capture Scratch to place media?  What L&T is doing is creating a new folder with the project name and placing the transcoded QTs there.  I could copy those files into the dated folders but hope there's a better way to get the footage there.

    You might want to Look into Clipwrap - http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap
    But Here's what I do when I want things organized as you describe using L&T:
    First Let me start by saying that I've complained for years about FCPs rigid file management Hierarchy. And I do understand your desire to manage your own media on a project basis rather than a "scratch drive" basis. But that's neither here nor there now that FCPX is on the horizon ...
    - First, you have to understand that you're not supposed to go into the FCP scratch directory and do your own housekeeping. That will certainly cause headaches. I know you want to keep the source footage near the transcoded clips but just let that go. Leave them on a separate drive(s) or at least a separate directory. Just Not inside the FCP scratch directory.
    Also, I'm not sure what to say about L&T verifying bit for bit other than I've been transcoding media this way for a few years now and NEVER had a problem where L&T completed and there was a faulty ingest. It always looks fantastic as ProRes.
    So,
    1 - I start a new FCP project with the appropriate name for each criteria. In your case it's going to be "Title + Date". Capture all the footage for that criteria and then close the project. Start a new FCP project, "Title+NextDate". Keep those project files wherever you like.
    As Jim C pointed out you'll notice that FCP created the designated folders for you.  DO NOT Move those folders. AND, Keep the original FCP capture projects backed up because if you ever need to RE-ingest you'll have to go back to those individual projects.
    2 - Start a new "main" project and Import each folder into the browser from the scratch directory. Now you have a Bin for each date in your new project and you're ready to get to work.
    I'll add one caveat - if your working with AVCHD footage you'll need to do a little more file management due to AVCHDs cryptic file naming structure, "clip1", "clip2" etc. You can leave them alone and FCP will function fine even with the redundant, cryptic clip names due to the meta data introduced during the L&T but it gets a little hairy sometimes on the timeline if there's tons of footage. Sometime I take the time to create descriptive clip names when ingesting. But since you're working with P2 cards that shouldn't be an issue.
    good luck

  • Problems with importing text messages from PC Suit...

    Problems with importing text messages from PC Suit 7.1.18.0 to my Nokia 5800
     I am trying to import a csv file that contains text messages (Note that this file was created using PC Suit 7.1.18.0) to a subfolder that I have created to My Folders but PC Suits only imports the text messages to the Draft folder. Note that initially it shows that the messages are import in the correct folder but after a refresh it shows them in the Draft Folder. Is their any setting that I should change in the PC Suit or the phone? My computer runs on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the Nokia 5800 was upgraded to the latest firmware v20.0.012
     Thanks for your help

    Most phones only allows importing of draft and archived box for SMS.
    To do a restoring, you need to backup the SMS as a .nbu file using PC Suite and restore later.
    If you got an SD card, you can also do a backup on the SD Card (backup.arc) then restore later (reset and restore: backup.arc and mmc).
    What's the law of the jungle?

  • Saving photos to the web by creating events. Called the destination folder does not exist.

    Hello,
    I ask you for advice (assistance). A week ago I re-installed the PC and installed to the computer again Photoshop CS5. Everything works for me except for the function of storing images for web by creating events. Called me constantly destination folder does not exist. The problem I had before. I ask you this advice on how to solve this problem.
    Thanks for the advice

    hi,
    i don't know if i integrate your code correctly, but it doens't work for me. I presently create skin for client and this plugin is really usefull for me.
    i use win7 64bit home edition, and photoshop cs5
    there is how i integrate this :
    // EDIT ALEX GRENIER
    function getPreferencesFolder() {
         var userData = Folder.userData;
         if (!userData || !userData.exists) {
              userData = Folder("~");
         var folder = new Folder(userData + "/xtools");
         if (!folder.exists) {
              folder.create();
         return folder;
    function exportChildren(dupObj, orgObj, dupDocRef, folder) {
    if (getCSVersion() >= 10) // CS3 Only
         // Create assets folder in Flex app's directory
         // var tempFolder;
         // tempFolder = new Folder (folder + "/assets/");
         // tempFolder.create();
         // EDIT ALEX GRENIER
         var tempFolder;
         tempFolder = getPreferencesFolder();
    i put the code creating the folder in comment and put your code in place, i also put your function before the function creating file.
    With the base code (without modification) photoshop is able to create my folder assets, but when it try to export the png, it export nothing, so i have a empty folder.
    thank you,
    Alex

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window.
    This action will delete any custom Mail stationery that you have created. If you want to preserve it, ask for instructions.
    If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Folder problems on external drive, not showing correct file size

    I've run across a strange problem. I'm media managing for a tv show, meaning I'm offloading video from CF cards onto 2 external drives, one is a Drobo Raid (set up for backup) and another is a Lacie rugged drive. After copying the media to both drives, the folder I copy will match, but sometimes as I drill upward in my folder structure, suddenly the file sizes will not match. To be more clear: 2 folders will show differing file sizes, but inside that folder is only another folder,nothing else, which matches across the drives. I've shown all files in finder and there's no hidden files, though sometimes I see the ds_store files are different sizes (8k vs 16k), but that's not always the case. Sometimes if I simply create a new folder and move it's contents into it I can get the folders to match, but sometimes that doesn't work. It's part of my workflow to show that these copies match exactly via screenshots, and although the most important folder (the direct folder holding the footage) always matches, these folder problems are super frustrating as it's not constant, and any workarounds also work inconsistantly.
    I had an accidental disconnect of the Drobo one time, and although none of the data seems to have any problem, I fear it's done something to the directory. The rugged drive is swapped out every few days and the problem seems to be on the Drobo. Because the nature of the data is pretty important, I'm afraid to just try messing around with repairing or other software solutions unless I know it's super safe and won't harm the data.
    I'm at a loss as to what's causing it and at the very least how to avoid it cropping up. Any help or insight would be appreciated!

    I had the same problem with my iMac, first I repaired the disk, then I ejected the disk, restarted, and then reinserted the USB in a different port.  All of my files magically showed up.  I don't know what caused the error but it has been working fine since.

  • Custom "Save as PDF" directly to a destination folder overwrites previously saved PDF files

    Custom "Save as PDF" directly to a destination folder overwrites previously saved PDF files
    As many of you will know, within Mac OSX it is possible to "print" any document off as a PDF.  You simply prepare your document then invoke the "Print" command and in the resulting print dialog box, click the "PDF" button in the bottom left corner which spills out a menu with various options including "Save as PDF..." as shown in the image below:
    Selecting the last option "Edit Menu" permits users to add specific folders to which a PDF of the document will be saved.  As you will note from the image above, I have created a number of destinations such as "Bank Transfers" (for anything on screen in Safari I wish to preserve when using my on-line banking facility); "Bind" (which I use with an Automator workflow to consolidate many PDFs into one long document); "Officeworks" (for stuff I need to copy to a USB stick and have printed on on large plotters); "iPad" (for anything I need to put on my iPad through "iAnnotate" or "Documents") etc
    The problem I have discovered is that with the introduction of Mountain Lion, PDFs that get saved directly to a destination folder get overwritten by later versions of PDFs that are produced from the same document.  This is fine when working on a single document that you may want to have the latest print of a document but not so when you produce many different PDFs from the same browser window in Safari as you surf through a number of websites etc.
    Prior to Mountain Lion, pervious versions were never over-written but rather preserved them with new versions having version number suffixes added e.g., untitled.pdf, followed by untitled1.pdf, untitled2.pdf, untitled3.pdf etc.
    Does anyone else have this problem?
    Does anyone have a solution to this problem? (other than a workaround like switching to Finder to rename or move files around)

    The "Save to Web Receipts" bug existed for a long time - here's a MacOSXHints article offering a workaround in 2007.  Here's another reference to it in 2009.  Your contention that:
    Prior to Mountain Lion, pervious [sic] versions were never over-written.
    is, I'm afraid, wrong.
    Apple fixed (worked around) that bug by using a .pdfworkflow, as I indicated.  As I also indicated, this file can't be opened with Automator (or I just don't know how, which is no great surprise ).  But it's the answer to your problems.
    You can either wait for Apple to fix what is, admittedly, a huge bug in their PDF Services feature, or you can find a way of implementing the same fix they did for your own folders.
    I should be doing the same, as I use PDF Services regularly, but I'm too lazy and have had too little success with Automator in general to give it a shot.  You may have more success than I did.
    Good luck
