LR 5 "encountered error reading preview cache need to quit.

LR main menu screen appears, but message pops up "encountered error reading preview cache need to quit.  Restarted several times but no change.  Message indicates it will attempt to resolve next time it starts, issue still remains

In your Lightroom folder, which is by default installed in the My Pictures folder (Mac: Pictures) you will see a file with an extension of .lrdata. This is the previews file. Remove it.
Restart Lightroom. The previews will then be rebuilt.

I'm getting message Lightroom encountered error when reading from its preview cache needs to quit. Lightroom 5 on Windows 7

To delete the preview cache, do this:
    1. Quit Lightroom.
    2. In your Operating System, locate your Lightroom catalog. Typically catalogs are in /Pictures/Lightroom on Mac and My Pictures\Lightroom on Windows.
    3. Find the folder whose name ends with "Previews.lrdata" and delete it. (note, you may also have a folder whose name ends with "Smart Previews.lrdata." You shouldn't need to delete that one.)

  • LR4 error when reading from its preview cache, needs to quit

I'm getting the above message.  Lightroom says it will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches,
requiring me to click OK and the program closes.  When I relaunch it, I see the same message.
I'm on a PC w/ Win7; I updated LR4 with the 4.1 download recently to enable it to read the 5DMarkIII raw files.

    From: "Steve from Maryland
I am having this problem regularly now on my laptop (SSD HDD and 64 bit
Win7Pro). I have erased the cache multiple times (BTW- you have to stop
textextractor.exe to be able to do this- more on this below as well). The
corruption keeps happening and I don't know why. Anyone????
Not sure what cache you are talking about. LR only refers to two 'caches' -
the acr cache which stores part-rendered images to speed up rendering in
Develop, and a video cache which does something when you use videos. The
catalog and previews are stored in another folder, along with a previews.db
and a rootpixels. db which store info on the previews.
If you are having trouble as you describe, you need to delete the previews
folder (including the two .db files) just leaving the catalog. Then you need
to clear the acr cache (under Edit/preferences/File handling/camera raw
cache).  Then regenerate all your previews in LR (select your main parent
folder, and tell it to build all previews). If you have a lot of images,
    best to do this overnight.
Then all the various caches, databases, previews, and catalog should now be
in sync again, and you shouldn't see that error.
Not sure what textextractor is but if it interferes with LR, I'd get rid of
    it.

Yikesyou have helped me before and I thank you for that.  Funny how at the last resort I ask a question and then an hour later I fix something that has been broken for five days.  I got off on the wrong foot with Lightroom installation and I really stepped in it...a lot had to do with a bad hard drive and all that.  I still have remnants of catalogues etc so I am never quite sure where I am.  I ran a search and found more than one .lrdata files.  I finally got the right one to delete and I think I am okI'll be crying to you again if I am wrongall best, thanks again for your helpjim sterne

  • When attempting to open LR 5, LR encountered error when reading preview cache and needs to quit. LR will attempt to fix on next launch.  LR does not fix on 30 attempts, and I cannot use LR. Windows PC. I have done

LR simply cannot be used by me now, I constantly get the error message, and I cannot open LR.
I have downloaded the LPP files and installed to .exe.  I have uninstalled LR and then reinstalled LR.  Still the same issue.  PLEASE HELP.
    Thanks.

You have a corrupt preview cache, that's what the message is telling you. To fix, you need to delete the current preview cache (Lightroom will start to rebuild a new one when you then start it). To delete the cache, use Finder/Explorer to go to the folder that contains your catalog. In the same folder will be the file named the same as the catalog but will end in Previews.lrdata, e.g. it will be something like "Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata". Delete this file (taking care NOT to delete the file ending with ".lrcat"), then Lightroom should start OK.

  • What to do when get error 'LR encountered an error when reading from its preview and needs to quit'?

I have Lightroom 3 Verion 3.5 and every time I open it I get he message "LR has encountered an error when reading form its preview cache and need to quit'.  When I close down the computer and restart the error continues.  I read on the forum that this can be fixed by deleting the entire previews folder that is next to hte Ircat file.  I have done this (the file is 1.3GB) and the error has gone but how do i go about rebuilding the previews?
Have i done the right thing?
Thanks for taking the time to help me.

    Jen,
Yes, you've done the right thing. Menu item:
That will rebuild your previews. If you have a lot of images in your catalogue, it can take quite a long time.

  • Lightroom 5.3 error when reading preview cache

I've browsed a few previous forum questions and answers and it appears I might need to find my catalog and delete my preview cache file(s).  However, I cannot find where these files are stored.  A few of the forum responses said to go into Lightroom edit/preferences to find where these files are stored, but I cannot get into Lightroom.  When I open it, it gives me the error message and I can't seem to get into edit to find where these files are stored.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Also, I'm relatively new to Lightroom (been using it for a little over a month, mostly just editing and not much for cataloging and organizing my photos), so I apologize in advance for any "stupid" questions.

You don't say what platform you are on, Windows or OSX. If you haven't determined for yourself where you wanted your catalog to be located, it will likely be in the default location. On Windows this will be "c:\users\your username\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat".
On OSX it will be "Macintosh HD/Usres/your username/Pictures/Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrcat".
Irrespective of the platform, the previews cache will be alongside the catalog and will be called "Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews.lrdata", so using Explorer/Finder locate and delete the file ending in "Previews.lrdata" (NOT the catalog itself, ending in "*.lrcat"). Lightroom should then start again, and will gradually start to rebuild the previews.

  • Lightroom preview cache error messge

hello, I keep on getting an error message "Lightroom has encountered an error while reading the preview cache and must quit". can anyone tell me what the problem is and help me solve it?
    thanks in advance
    abel

As the message says.....the preview cache has a problem, probably there's a corruption in there somewhere, and this is preventing Lightroom from working. Easiest solution is to delete the existing preview cache, and on next start of Lightroom a new cache will be created. The downside is that initially there'll be no previews available although Lightroom will start to build new ones automatically, but only for images as they are brought on screen in the Grid or Filmstrip. Alternatively you can instruct Lightroom to build new previews (for ALL or just selected images) using the Library>Previews options, but if doing ALL you may want to set that going overnight as it can take a while depending on the number of images in the catalog.
The previews cache is contained in the sub-folder ending in "Previews.lrdata" which is adjacent to the catalog......just make sure you delete this folder, and NOT the catalog file ending in ".lrcat".

Have a  problem with Lightroom 5.4.  Since the program crashed yesterday it won't launch, it comes up with the message "Lightroom encountered an error when reading its preview cache and needs to quit".  "  Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem next time it launches".  Except that it doesn't, I keep getting the same message and the program closes.  Does anyone know what I  can do to repair it?  Can't back up, can't do anything.

There are dozens of threads in this forum that describe the fix

  • Lightroom encountered and error when reading from it preview cache and needs to quit

A power outage caused my Lightroom 5.2 to shut down without closing.  When I powered back up and opened lightroom it gives me an error "Lightroom encountered and error when reading from it preview cache and needs to quit" and then it says it will try to fix it the next time it opens. I have opened it 20 times and it is not fixing it. I removed the program completely and upgraded to 5.5 AND it is still giving me the same error.  Is my catalog corrupt or something? I had it set to automatically load the most currently used catalog, so it is not allowing me to open or start a new catalog either. HELP!!!

Search the forum, this has been answered many times.

Can you try to rename (not delete!) the folder named "YOUR_CATALOG_NAME Previews.lrdata" and restart Lightroom?

  • "Lightroom encountered and error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit"

I keep receiving this error every time I open LR, "Lightroom encountered and error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit" and the app won't open. It said LR would try and fix this error next time I opened it but the error remains. I tried uninstalled and installing the app and the error remains.
Any Ideas here? Is there another app that may be telling it where to look for the cache and it no longer there? I was using a ramdisk for a bit but ditched it. Not sure if that has something to do with it but it seems suspect.
    Your thoughts?

Edward: it shows me a welcome screen and is asking me to select my country
      Edward: aka, register the software
Gokul: You can skip and launch it.
      Edward: LR catalog not found
      Gokul: Please select the catalog.
      Edward: my original catalog?
      Gokul: Yes.
      Edward: testing integrity of catalog
      Edward: loaded just fine
      Gokul: Okay.
Gokul: Please check if you can re-launch it again.
      Edward: yes, it worked!
      Gokul: Excellent!
Gokul: Since your preferences were corrupted you were facing issue so we renamed the preferences file to reset it.
