LR 5 not opening catalogs

Yesterday I was able to open and update my LR 4 catalogs. Today it will not open any catalog. The screen flashes quickly (faint image of a box appears and disappears to fast to see anything) and all I see is the upper left corner:
Lightroom  File  Edit  Window  Help
I am a long-time LR user. Just went to CC for PS and LR5. Never seen this happen before.
Thought I might re-install LR but CC says it's up to date and there is no way to do it. Also don't see a way to un-install LR.

Hi Romit,
I'm using Mac 10.8.4.
Tried to uninstall/re-install following Solution 1 shown at your link above, but the folder only has a "Lightroom 5.2" file which appears to be an installer, not an UNinstaller. Maybe that is a typo.
So I tried running the Lighroom 5.2 file anyway, and it says Adobe Application Manager is damaged and needs to be replaced. This is where I stopped.
Here are the contents of the folder:
file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers/Adobe CMM
file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Adobe%20Installers/Lightroom%205.2
file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Adobe%20Installers/Uninstall%20Adobe%20Creative%20Cloud/
file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Adobe%20Installers/Uninstall%20Adobe%20Photoshop%20CC
file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Adobe%20Installers/Uninstall%20Adobe%20Photoshop%20CS4
file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Adobe%20Installers/Uninstall%20Adobe%20Photoshop%20CS5
file://localhost/Applications/Utilities/Adobe%20Installers/Uninstall%20Adobe%20Photoshop%20CS6
Something isn't right. Please clarify.

  • LR 2.5 64 bit will not open catalogs from LR 2.5 32 bit

    I just upgraded my PC from XP (32 bit) to Windows 7 (64 bit) and have changed LR (version 2.5) from 32 bit version to 64 bit version in the process
    I have used LR 2.x for a long time on my old system, and had created a good archive structure with LR catalogs for each year on an external drive + had one for the current year on my computer.
    After the upgrade, LR will open the one catalog that was stored on my computer (but now transferred to the same disc as the archive structure), but not the catalogs in the archive structure. The error message says that the archive catalogs are not writable - even if these catalogs are exactly the same and have been made in the same LR version as the one catalog that will open.
    What's wrong here, and - most impotantly - what's the trick to fix it?
    Here is the error message that I am getting on the archive catalogs:

    While you are NOT running Lightroom, look in the directory where your catalogue is located and check to see if a file with a ".lock" extension is there. If so, delete it and then try running Lightroom again. That file is created when Lightroom starts and is deleted when LR exits. It prevents two copies of LR from accessing the catalogue simultaneously. If LR crashes, that file can be left on disk, preventing access.

  • PSE 12 organizer not opening catalog

    First time opening organizer in PSE 12, just bought and installed.
    On Windows 7. Previously had PSE 8. Told it to convert catalog, but every time it opens, it starts doing the face recognition process, and promptly crashes.
    Have tried the first few solutions in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1305821?tstart=0
    Stopped at entry #6, as I could not find the folder they were describing. And I am not interesting in downloading sqlite.
    Any solutions to offer now?

    Ah, apparently you didn't read through what I said. I tried the first few solutions offered in the previous forum thread that I linked to -- this was one of them. I have that already turned off. When I go into manage catalogs and try to open the converted catalog, it opens it, promptly says it is Restoring People Recognition Data, and about 5% in, it crashes. Same exact point every time. I try to hit cancel to stop it; doesn't work. ALL Media Analysis is turned off. I've also got the Automatically Generate Thumbnails for Video Files turned off.
    Next suggestion?
    Could I load in from a backup catalog? I do have my catalog backed up fairly recently.

  • After windows 8.1 update catalog can not open due to unexpected error

    after my windows update the lightroom app will not open. i'm not tech savvy at all and don't know what to do to have this taken care of and being that I bought the product 112 days ago and not 90 or less I cannot speak to someone directly to help with the issue please help anyone if you can.

    Try holding down the Ctrl (Win) / Command (Mac) key while launching Lightroom. This should get you the Catalog Manager. From here, create a new catalog and see if that opens. If it does, import your old catalog into it and it will most likely continue to work after that.

    PLEASE HELP ME OUT

    Dude,
    Try following what the error message tells you to do.
    When you launch catalog manager you are basically calling a cmd file that calls a JAR file and opens up the catalog manager GUI. Locate the path of the cmd file for the catalog manage, in OBI 11g it is here, C:\oracle\fmw\instances\instance1\bifoundation\OracleBIPresentationServicesComponent\coreapplication_obips1\catalogmanager
    Right-click to "Edit" the runcat.cmd file (use Wordpad as you can see the word wrap and line breaks better than in notepad).
    On the line,
    set CATMAN_VMARGS=-vmargs -Xmx1024M -Dosgi.clean=true -Declipse.noRegistryCache=true
    change it to,
    set CATMAN_VMARGS=-vmargs -Xmx1024M -Dosgi.clean=true -Declipse.noRegistryCache=true -Dosgi.locking=none
    Please mark this as the correct answer if it is so that this thread can be closed.
    Cheers mate,
    Christian

    Your solution worked when applied to a administrative user account but did work with a student account.
    I'm not sure why that is happening.
    If you're on Vista or Windows 7, you could try setting the program to run permanently as Administrator, as described here:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Slide_show_preview
    If that doesn't help, my only suggestion would be to work through these tedious troubleshooting steps:

  • LR5 will not open ANY existing catalog

    LR5.4, MacBook Pro, all catalogs on 256 SSD intermal, photos on external drive. Experienced LR user (since beta tester for v1) I am a CC subscriber, but LR is previous buy and under serial number.
    New problem: LR will not open any of my 5 catalogs. Will create a new catalog (empty), then will not open it. On program open, choose any catalog from window: after a minute or so, goes to pizza wheel, then quits. No error message, nothing. System Force Quit shows still open, "...not responding."
    Actions:
    1. Downloaded copy, reinstalled over existing: no change.
    2. Use Time Machine to go back 48 hrs (when it was working) and Restore of entire User Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom: no change.
    Before I lose an extensive preference file or other setup, I'm wondering if anyone has some help here.

    My recommendations:
    1. Reset the preference file (I know you don't want to) Follow these instructions. http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?14226-Resetting-(or-Trashing-)-the-Lightroom -Preferences-file
    2. If that doesn't work, I would recommend. Uninstall - fresh download of LR - reinstall.

  • My catalog will not open in Photoshop Elements 3.0

    I had to reinstall the program and it worked fine.  I was able to restore all my pictures.  Today when I tried to open it the "my Catalog" will not open.  I've tried refreshing, restarting the system, restoring to yesterday and nothing has helped.  What should I try next?

    What error message do you see upon opening your catalog?
    Thanks

  • Lightroom 3.2-64 Bit. will not start -It said-opening Catalog:DSC0024.then shuts down

    I have downloaded Lightroom 3.2-64 Bit . When i start the software it gives me the message" Lightroom-opening Catalog:DSC0024.JPG.Ircat"
    Then a window opens and said " Adobe Photoshop lightroom 64-bit has stoped working. A problem caused this program to stoped working correctely. Windows will close the program and notifiy
    you if a solution is available"
    I have a Windows 7 - 64bit
    Any help getting Lightroom started would be appreciated.

    Seems to be the following "classic" LR 3.x problem: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom_3_4_1_64_bit_doesnt_work
    In short: You tried to create a new catalog with the name of an existing JPEG file ("DSC0024.JPG"). Perhaps you wantet to open/import that file and accidentally used the wrong command (create new catalog). Solution: 1) Rename the file. 2) Start LR, let it create the catalog in a folder named as the original file, 3) close LR, 4) delete the newly created folder containing the new catalog, 5) Start LR again - it will probably ask you for your catalog (select the catalog you are really working with). 6) Re-rename your JPEG file again.
    Edit: P.S: LR 3.2 is a rather old version. The latest update for 3.x is 3.6 (free of charge), download it here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=113&platform=Windows (Note: This bug is not fixed in LR 3.6. It is fixed in LR 4).

  • PSE 12 - Can't open catalog - some internal programming error. Can NOT open PSE 12 organizer

    Can not pass Catalog manager - Can't open catalog - sez an internal programming error occurred?????

    Yes, it seems like a problem with the main catalog.  I haven't seen a failed conversion before that didn't write a conversion log.  So there aren't many clues to go on.  I have just one more suggestion -- run the utility psedbtool on your PSE 6 catalog:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/
    Because you have both PSE 6 and 8 installed, you'll have to run it specially:
    1. Start PSE 6 and do Help > System Info to find the folder path of your PSE 6 catalog folder.
    2. Start a command prompt.
    3. Type these two commands:
    cd c:\psedbtool
    .\psedbtool -printVolumeTable > output.log
    4. Copy and paste the contents of c:\psedbtool\output.log here.

  • LR5.3 CC Catalog does not open all folders.

    Hi !
    Last week I upgraded from LR4.3 to LR5.3CC on Windows 8, and since them I'm facing issues with the catalog.
    I have about 80.000 pictures in one catalog, splitted in subfolders by date. If I click in the main folder (Photos), I can browse all pictures:
    All works well until Feb 10, 2011.  When I click on the date, it gets highlighted and all works well.
    But, when I click on any date following Feb 10, 2011, it does not highligh as expected (actually it becomes only a little bit brighter), and it does not open the folder for browsing, but the navigator shows the first picture in the folder. The picture counting for each folder is correct. When I add more pictures and more folders to the catalog the folders and countings are updated, but the problem remains in the new folder.
    What have I tried so far.
    1) I inspected the folders looking for strange files - didn't find any.
    2) I recreated the whole catalog.
    3) I created another catalog for some of those non working folders, and it worked fine.
    4) I optimized the catalog.
    5) I rendered 1:1 previews.
    6) I rebooted LR and Windows.
    It's very frustrating. Never had a problem with LR4.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ronald

    Optimizing the catalogue was a good move.
    I wonder if this is a variation of the bug where Lightroom fails to display long lists on Windows. Usually after about 1600 items, keywords for instance, any subsequent ones are hidden. So I'm thinking 11th February might be the 1601st.
    What happens if you add a year folder and drag the date-folders under it? I'd just create one year initially, 2010, and then see if folders after 2012-02-11 behave normally.

  • After a power outage, Lightroom won't open.  It says the catalog is not writable and will not open

    How do I get lightroom to open?  It says the catalog is not writable and will not open?

    No, Jim.  I did not know where the backups were!  I've been researching this online, on here, and asking everyone I knew that used lightroom if they had any idea how I could get lightroom to open again. I checked out "permissions" too. Finally, I went to the lightroom folder which was in my PICTURES library and double clicked on "Lightroom 5 Catalog.lrdata" and Lightroom opened up.  I hadn't backed up the images since the 24th so all of those that were edited since then went back to being unedited.  I had already exported them to another folder so I don't have to do anything to those anyway.  Is this lrdata the backup?  I had a couple of people tell me to go to Lightroom and do this and do that, but I couldn't open Lightroom up to do anything at all!  After getting Lightroom back, I got the 5.5 update and everything seems to be back to normal.  I appreciate your help  AND your kindness to someone that hasn't got a clue about computers or how this software works.

  • Catalog index pdx could not open

    Hi,
    I have been trying to create a catalog (Acrobat 9 pro extended) for about 540 PDF files (and growing weekly!) and often see in my log that the index process has failed to open certain files. There is no security on these files and when I do a search it seems that they have been indexed but as it is skipping about 50-odd files each time I build/rebuild the index every week I can't be sure I have actually managed to get them all included in the index.
    What could be causing the "could not open" errors?
    Any help/ideas is appreciated.
    Thanks for your time,
    Greig

    Try posting in the Acrobat - Creation and Editing forum. You aren't using Distiller Server, and nobody comes to this forum. Good luck!

    DataSet1.DataTable_DailyBatch1DataTable table = ta.GetData(clsLogs.strStartDate_rpt, clsLogs.strBatchno_Rpt, clsLogs.cmdeviceid); // Data from Database

    fs = new FileStream(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory + ImageName, FileMode.Open);
    else
    // if photo does not exist show the nophoto.jpg file
    fs = new FileStream(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory + ImageName, FileMode.Open);
    // initialise the binary reader from file streamobject
    br = new BinaryReader(fs);
    // define the byte array of filelength
    byte[] imgbyte = new byte[fs.Length + 1];
    // read the bytes from the binary reader
    imgbyte = br.ReadBytes(Convert.ToInt32((fs.Length)));
    dt.Rows[0]["Image"] = imgbyte;
    br.Close();
    // close the binary reader
    fs.Close();
    // close the file stream
    catch (Exception ex)
    // error handling
    MessageBox.Show("Missing " + ImageName + "or nophoto.jpg in application folder");
    return dt;
    // Return Datatable After Image Row Insertion
