LR 5.x crop tool bug: selection jumping on activation

Hi,
I did not see this reported, but I'd be rather surprised if nobody had noticed the issue before.
I'm seeing this behavior since I upgraded from LR 4 to LR 5. I think I did the upgrade with 5.3, but at 5.6 I still have the following problem:
After setting a cropping rectangle (usually with rotation), then change some settings (e.g. exposure, shadows, blacks, etc.) and then activate the cropping tool again, the displayed image jumps to the original frame size for half a second and then back to the previously set crop.
Since I usually go back to cropping only for small changes in rotation, this is especially annoying, because it irritates the eye in a way that I'm sometimes not even sure if I'm seeing my previous setting again. And then I have forgotten how I actually wanted to adjust the setting
This seems to me like a bug introduced in LR5. I'm using Lightroom since version 2 and never had this behavior until the upgrade to LR5.
I'm using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, nvidia Graphics.
Steps to reproduce:
1) Open an image in the development module (I'm using Canon CR2 raws)
2) Set a cropping window
3) change some image settings, e.g. exposure
4) activate the cropping tool
Please fix this behavior.
Thanks,
Karsten

Thanks for the clarification. Too bad that the fix did not make it into LR 5.6.
I'm new here, so please apologize my beginners question: Is there a place where I can find bug reports that were accepted as known bugs? I tried the community search on cropping tool and did not find any related bugs.
Thanks,
Karsten

I'm trying to do a batch crop in camera raw and there is no dropdown option in the crop tool to select inches or pixels. How can I fix this?

Create an action to do the crop and user the image processor to batch process your RAW files and have it use your cropping action in the process.

Is it possible to enable camera RAW to start with the crop tool automatically selected?

As far aas I know you can't.

  • Crop Tool bug!

    Hi All,
I've got Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) installed on Leopard (10.5.1) and am having trouble with the crop tool.
Measurements input into the Width and Height fields don't appear and only way to fix it is to restart the application. Its worth noting that this bug only occurs after using the tool once. The first time the tool is selected it works perfectly, on subsequent uses this bug occurs.
    I'm using a 20" Aluminium iMac, 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM, 256mb Nivida Graphics Card.
Any info on this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    David

Could be a bug. There seem to be a lot of them with CS3 and Leopard.
But, I'd at least try trashing/resetting Preferences.

  • Aperture 3.0.3 Adjustments & Cropping Tool Bugs

I don't know if 3.0.3 actually did any good, but it did some harm for sure. Many times when I go to make adjustments, the entire adjustment pane is blank. Restarting Aperture brings it back, but this is rather annoying since it never happened before. Also, the crop tool has bugs. Sometimes when I crop an image, the entire image disappears from my project. Again, when I restart Aperture the image comes back. Another issue I'm having with crop is if I set it to say 8x10 and pull on a corner, it allows free movement like "custom" used to, and will not stay 8x10. At the same time, "custom" only pulls symmetrically and does not allow custom cropping unless I enter numerical values. Now that I've just shot a large family reunion and have hundreds of images to process, this is a real PITA. Thanks again Apple for a real half-assed update.

Thank God experienced users are having this problem! I have only just upgraded from iPhoto straight to Aperture 3 in the last fortnight and I thought I was doing something wrong with the crop function?! Also why isn't there a 'done' or 'apply' button for crop??? Is simply closing the crop box the applying?
    Totally Confused Newbie
PS also app goes into a loop when I try to import from iPhoto, won't let me stop import or quit or even quit Aperture.
PPS why are a lot of my imported (from installation I automatically imported my iPhoto library) pics upside down???
    not happy

  • Crop Tool crashes when OPENGL is activated

    Hi,
im on vista 32bit and my notebook video driver is intel 965 chipset ( i just updated my drivers)
probem is when i enable my OPENGL in order to use the rotate canvas feature, crop tool crashes whenever i activate it. most of the tools work ok(haven\t tried all yet)
but when i disable OpenGL, crop tool works fine.
I need the rotate canvas feature & thus OPENGl enabled.. what can I do about the crop tool(and most probably some other tools) crashing on me?
i already tried resetting & install/reisntall. .does not help!!
    pls advice!]

You could try playing with the settings of OpenGL in the PS preferences dialog.
Or look at the video driver settings in Display Properties.
Otherwise, as I said, your computer may not be up to it.

  • Crop tool shows background color unless I switch to "Classic" mode

I'm not sold on the "latest" Photoshop being the best. I've seen more bugs now that I've subscribed to the "CC" version than ever before. Here's my latest issue..
When I activate the crop tool (I realize it's been rewritten.. not sure why), I see my current background color in place of what is visible in my current  workspace. Ultimately, completing the crop command, it crops as expected, and the background color vanishes. What benefit is this? It adds confusion and makes me a bit confused as to what the final crop result will be. Why was this changed? Why am I seeing my current background color? It makes no sense. I've been using Photoshop for nearly 20 years and this is just dumb. Can anyone explain?
    Thanks!
    - Sean

Yeah, that was pretty vague. I was in a creative mode and was rudely interrupted by this weird change, so I wasn't focused on a clear post. The lack of direct email support to Adobe frustrated me also. Alas..
Bascially, I have a layer with some image data, and transparent regions:
I select the crop tool, and select a region just inside the outside edge, containing the portion of the image I care about:
The background switched from being transparent to my current background color selection. I had this green chosen for some completely unrelated task. I can't find anywhere that this can be disabled. The settings I have are what I believe to be the defaults:
And, when I change the crop settings to "Use Classic Mode", the behavior is the more sensible (in my opinion) current background:
I hope that clears up the confusion. I can't imagine any use case where replacing the current visible background with the current background color makes sense. If it's a feature, I can't find any documentation, official or otherwise, that explains why this is happening.
Yes, I like the latest versions of software, but since I made the jump from CS4 to CC, I've hit more bugs than ever before. I've had to kill Photoshop a couple times in the past two months, whereas before, it never froze up or crashed on me. This feels like a bug, but if it's a feature, I'd love to know how to use the new crop tool's background settings properly.
    Cheers!

  • Cropping tool does not function properly in Photoshop CS3

Cropping tool does not function properly in Photoshop CS3. Always crops to .004" x .004". Tried reinstall with no luck. Any fixes out there?

Reset the tool by right-clicking on the crop tool drop-down/fly-out menu in the top options bar (big crop tool icon above the tools panel, when the crop tool is selected). Be sure to check there aren't values in the crop tool by hitting the clear button in the options bar.

  • PS CS6 Beta - Crop tool problems

Generally, i think the new crop tool is pretty good. However, i'm having some problems with predefined sizes / areas.Let me try to explain:
    1. For example, I have a scanned image that is 26.14 x 20.32 cm @300ppi
    2. I have defined a size called 'Half Page' which is 23.5 x 15.5 cm @300ppi
Now, what i would expect is that:
    1. The moment i open the scanned image, click the crop tool and select the 'Half Page' setting, the crop boundaries would show up up at the correct setting in terms of size and resolution.
    2. I should then have a window within which i could move the image to get the parts i want into the crop box.
    This is not happening:
    1. The crop size (box) is showing as 23.5 x 15.5.
    2. The info is showing as 26.14 x 17.24
    3. The image size is showing the same and @ 300ppi.
Obviously, i'm probably doing something wrong or else...
    Grateful for any help!
    Cheers!

Further Noel... just tried setting the predetermined box in pixels... same problem...
What seems to happen is that the largest dimension reverts to the image boundary, while the smaller dimension crops into the image. This despite my setting the ppi to 300 - the same as the image's ppi.
The way i look at it, when i set a predertimed size, the crop box should be at that size... particularly, as you suggested, when i have pixels selected as my dimensions. And my rulers are also set to pixels.
    The latest attempt as follows:
    1. Image size is 20.32 x 26.14cm @300ppi (2400x3087 pixels)
    2. Crop size is set to 1831 x 2776 pixels (ppi setting enabled to 300 and rulers are also in pixels)
What happens is the crop box defaults to the full height of the image and crops in at the sides. Info box shows: W:1831, H: 2776. But it's encomapssing the full 3087 pixels (height) of the original image.
The way i look at it i should get a crop box that is smaller than the image and now should be able to move the image around to gt th crop i want. This way i still have to crop into the image and it's then resampling the image.
    Cheers...

  • Bug in Crop tool with Olympus E-M5 raw files (ORF)

There is a bug in the crop tool with Olympus OM-D E-M5 RAW files (ORF) that is still not fixed with the recent update.  Here is how to reproduce the problem.
I setup my E-M5 camera picture aspect ratio to 3:2 (instead of the sensor 4:3) and file format to RAW.
    I take a picture.
I import the picture in Lightroom.  The first thumbnail I see is the full sensor, then Lightroom computes a new thumbnail and correctly display the 3:2 crop factor.
I select the picture in the library and press [R] to bring the Crop tool.
BUG: The Crop tool does not let me recover the full 4:3 sensor image and is locked to the 3:2 crop factor.
    Can this be fixed?  Thanks

Are you sure you mean Photoshop version 6 the is a very old version of Photoshop before ACR existed. ACR first became available as a extra cost plug-in for Photoshop version 7.  ACR started to be shipped with Photoshop with  Photoshop CS. Each version since Photoshop CS has a newer version of ACR which is not compatible with older versions of Photoshop. So
    CS ACR version is 2.4
    CS2 ACR version 3.7
    CS3 ACR version 4.6
    CS4  ACR version 5.7
    CS5 ACR version 6.7
CS6 and CC ACR version 8.4 however the new features in ACR 8.4 for CC are crippled in CS6. CS6 just get the new Camera support.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows
If you have CS6 use menu help>Updates it should find the ACR 8.4 for CS6 and update your installation. If it does not you can down load it and the DNG converter.  However don't convert to DNG just use your OFR RAW files.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2014/04/camera-raw-8-4-and-dng-converter-8-4-now-a vailable.html
If you do mean Photoshop version 6 you need to see if Olympus  has a RAW converter for Photoshop version 6 for your camera.

  • Where is the tool to select a portion of an image to crop?

I am new to PS cc 2014.  Where is the tool to select a potion of an image to crop?

You'll find the Crop Tool on the Toolbar.  It might be behind the Slice or Perspective Crop tool.

A small triangle on the tool icons denotes that other tools are located below.

  • Cannot change tools and cannot use selection or crop tools

I am using Photoshop Extended CS6.  A new problem has started to occur recently.  I can select a tool, but I can't change the tool type. For example, I can select the Lasso Tool and when I right-click the tool fly-out appears, but I cannot select a tool from the fly-out to change the tool type.  The editing tools, at least the ones I can select, still work except for the selection and crop tools.  For the crop tool, the crop lines appear at the edge of the image but they cannot be moved.  For the selection tools, nothing is selected.  I can still use menu commands such as Canvas Size.
This happens when I open a file or start a new file.  I have Windows 7, 4G memory and nothing else running.  I have tried 32-bt and 64-bit versions.
This has happened intermittently for a month or two.  In the past, freeing up space on a hard drive seemed to help.  But now I have 50G free on one drive and 30G free on another so I don't see how that could be the problem.  Rebooting allows me to use the crop tool once, but then the problem reoccurs.
    Ideas, anyone?

No keyboard macro programs installed.  Microsoft Security Essentials is installed.  It says it is up to date and there are no problems.  A keyboard test program found no problems. I have tried two USB keyboards with the same results  I have 10% free on my system drive: and 15% free on my second drive.
    More clues:
If I open Photoshop by opening a file, the problem immediately occurs. If I open Photoshop and then open a file, it works until I press a key as described above.
The problem only occurs in Photoshop. I’ve tried lots of other programs, including Premiere, Audition and Illustrator; they all work correctly.
The problem can occur without a keyboard attached.  As I described above, if I switch to another application (Windows Explorer in my test) and then switch back, the problem occurs.  This is true even if there is no internal keyboard and no USB keyboard.

  • Crop Tool - only constrained selections possible

Using the crop tool I can only make selection marquees that are constrained as if I am clicking a corner handle. When the selction is finished I have no side handles only four corner handles.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong??
    I would appreciate any help.

CS5 but I have worked out what was wrong; I had measurements in the width and height boxes; I cleared the measurements now all is fine; thanks.

  • CS4 Control of Selection tool and Cropping tool errors in Windows 7

The cropping tool and some selection tools seem to work poorly in my Windows 7 machine. How about yours?

They work fine here too. Possibly resetting the prefferences would cure the problem. I'd give it a try especially if the tools had worked then stopped.

  • Crop Tool - can you get it to select areas to be removed?

The Crop Tool on my AAX selects the area to be retained.  Can you alter the tool so that it selects the area to be removed instead?
I'm trying to remove just the white space in the middle of a page.  My pages have some lines of text at the top, then white space in the middle, then more text at the bottom. A crop tool that identifies the middle white space and then removes it would be ideal - but there may be other ways?
I'm doing a trial of AAX Pro vs Nitro Pro OCR.

Thanks Bernd, I couldn't find it, and you've now confirmed it isn't there.
Michael asks me "   ... what do you want in the middle, if not white?"  Answer:  take the white out of the middle thus shortening the page.  Bring the footer text upwards to where the white space used to be.
I'm making the pdf equivalent of paper files.  So for example into each pdf I put A4 sized prints of emails, one per page.  Each email has maybe 5 lines of important text, then lots of useless white space, then a footer with additional important text.  I want to remove that central white space.  That would make the page much shorter than A4 but still same width, and retaining the footer text.  So that the file content can be read without loads of wasted space on the screen.
I accept now that the AAX cropping tool can't do what I want.  Nor I think the redaction tool.  But maybe there's another way to get what I want?
