LR 6/CC GPU accelaration makes healing brush slow?

Hi everyone,
I'm happy with my CC abo and LR6 so far. The GPU support improves the responsiveness and is awesome. But I also noticed that cloning/healing brushes are MUCH SLOWER with enabled GPU support. Especially then drawing a line or so it's super fast. Then I'm disabling the GPU it's noticeable faster.
My system configuration:
- Intel i5-2500 @3,3GHz
- AMD R9 270X with driver 14.12
- 16 GB RAM
- LR on SSD, catalog and RAW files on a separate SSD
I know that the CPU is not the freshest but the system is working fine and in Photoshop I have no performance problems, so updating the system is not on a high priority at the moment.
Can someone else confirm my observations? Suggestions are welcome and some Adobe statement (further GPU improvements in the next couple months as CC updates) too.
Thanks and regards,
Ralf

i noticed that even with my 980GTX the image preview needs a second for updating.
first i see a noisy image and then the preview is updated and the noise is gone.
with LR 5.7 i never noticed this.
the really annoying thing is.... it happens for images where the preview is already rendered.
i never had issues with the slider perfromance in past versions.
but the library modul was not the fastest (so to speak)... try photo mechanics and you will notice the difference.
overall... even with having a 980GTX i am not impressed by what is called "the major feature" of this release.

  • Strange lines using healing brush/clone brush.

This happens to me all the time using the healing brush or cloning tool. I allready turned gpu accelleration off but it still exists! Also updated graphics card drivers. No go.
It exists on both machines, using different graphics cards and different cpu's.
I am using windows 8, windows 7 and photoshop cs6 extended.
It doesn't seem to  be a gpu problem since i turned that off.
Hope someone can point me to a solution.

I've been running into this exact same problem with the healing/clone brush. Where do I go to turn off the "windowtabs" tool? I'm using PS CS6 with Win 7.
    Update:
Googled WindowTabs tool. From what I found, I don't believe that I have this "tool" loaded on my puter. Searched my drives for windowtabs and found nothing. If it's not on my puter, something else is causing the issues with the PS healing brush/clone tools. In my situation, the brush "selects" other areas than I'm trying to fix, but not every time. Very frustrating, especially when you discover "damage" to parts of the image that can't be undone by going back far enough to undo the damage. I have to watch closely as I make my selections to make sure that the area I selected was actually done correctly. Love the tools, but I hate having my work flow slowed down by having to watch for their erratic behavior.

  • Elements 8 & 64-bit windows 7--editor shows a bandaid for healing brush; how do I get the circle?

Previous versions of elements would show brush sizes with a circle. Using brackets, you could see the size
increase/decrease. Elements 8 only shows a bandaid for the healing brush, no indication on photo of the brush size. Also, if I set text size to large, some tools show as 3, i.e., 3 hands, 3 bandaids, etc. Anyone else have this problem or know of a solution? I'm using a laptop with Windows 7, 64-bit. Microsoft says the program is compatible.

Elements 8 only shows a bandaid for the healing brush, no indication on photo of the brush size.
Make sure that Edit > Preferences > Displays And Cursors > Painting Cursors is set to Normal Brush Tip.  If that doesn't help, try deleting the Editor's preferences:

This is a known bug in PSE on Windows 7 -- you have to change the Windows display DPI (text size) to less than 150%.

  • Photoshop CS5 Spot Healing Brush only blurs

Here's a before and after shot.  I recently upgraded from CS3 and the spot healing brush always worked great.
Now when I use it, whether or not I use content aware fill, it leaves a blurred residue of what I was trying to remove.
As an aside, the Content Aware Fill leaves a similar residue, enough to make it effectively unusable.
I have included a sample photo of the spot healing brush problem.  Left side is before and right side is after.
I just wanted to get rid of the electrical wall socket.  You can see that it's not working.  I am running windows 8 in a 64-bit environtment and running the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.5
Any assitance anyone is able to afford me is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with your choice of Spot Healing Brush for this image. I cropped your screenshot to the "BEFORE" image, removed the "BEFORE" type (with the SHB) and scaled to 600% to match your original document.
A dab of a 0% hardness 500 pixel Spot Healing Brush in Ps CS5.1 on OS X 10.6.8 worked perfectly. However, I would have made a vertical stroke with the brush at about 80% hardness and about 200 pixels, which also works for me.
Maybe your SHB is working in "Create Texture" mode despite specifying "Proximity Match" in Options bar. Try resetting the SHB by right-clicking its icon at left of Options bar and picking "Reset Tool" from the menu that appears.

  • Problem with Healing Brush Align Function

I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac and I am having some trouble with the healing brush tool.
The behaviour seems to be the same whether I have 'Align' ticked or not.
I first select the area I want to sample from using alt-click. I then use the healing brush to paint over the area I want to repair. The cross-hair showing where the pixels are being sampled from moves as I move the brush around. I assumed this would only happen when 'aligned' is ticked but it happens all the time, meaning it paints unwanted pixels.
What I want to do is keep sampling from the orginal point, not for it to move as I move the brush.
Is this expected behaviour or am i doing something wrong?
    Many Thanks

It really would be good to be able to see a sample of what you're getting to make sure we're on the same page.  Do you have another browser you could use?
How hard is the brush you're using to paint with the Healing Brush?  I find that a hard edged brush often works best.
The Healing Brush tool derives the color it uses for mixing from its surroundings, and it can often look further than just the adjoining pixels.  If you use it very close to a place where the color changes a lot you'll see something like what you're describing.  I just avoid using it near contrasty places and if I see this I just use other means - e.g., the clone tool.
Note the difference in results below, when the Healing Brush tool is used on these two spots with the same brush:

  • Editor spot healing brush using slider to adjust size

Is there anyway to make the "slider for size adjustment" more visible when using Editor Spot Healing Brush"?
On my system, the slider bar is black and against the dark gray of the Editor Screen" it makes it very difficlt for me see it.

Try using the square bracket keys on the keyboard.

  • Spot healing brush preset

Hello. I have a couple of hot pixels on the sensor and removing them individually from each picture is time consuming. Is there a way to apply the spot healing brush on one picture where needed and copy the brush strokes onto the other pictures since the spots remain stuck in exactly the same places on all images?
In other words I'd like to batch-heal all images at once.
    Thank you,
    David

So, first I have to make a selection/s and then Edit - Fill - ... ? If so, which tool would be best to make my tiny selections?
No, it doesn't have to be a smart object.
I'm kind of envisioning tying an action to a key that you can press when you're editing your document and want to make the change, but how you want to use it is entirely up to you.
Actions can seem a bit geeky, but once you get the hang of recording your steps as actions, and get used to the editor in the Actions panel, they can be quite useful for making repeatable functions that can be surprisingly complex.  To record an action, name it appropriately then just do the operations you want to repeat on a representative image, then stop the recording.  Brush strokes won't record, but most everything else will.
Since hot pixels affect probably 1 or maybe as many as 9 pixels, I'd suggest just using the rectangular marquee tool to make the very small selections (you can, of course, make more than one by holding down the shift key).  Note that this assumes you'll be using the same sized images each time, and as I mentioned the locations will be different for a portrait and a landscape image.
    Have fun with actions!

  • Clone Stamp & Healing Brush and alignment

I have PSE9. I am having excellent success in removing collars from the dog pictures I am working on when using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools in combination. The book I am learning from says if I want to select pixels from a single source to deselect the align option. However whether I have the align option selected or not, I am getting the corresponding crosshair sampling pixels as the tools are brushed on the image. I know I can do even better if I can maintain a single sampling source. How do I select and maintain a single sampling source for these two tools? Thanks, Jim.

Thank you for your response, but forgive me for asking for clarity. I will be removing alot of dog collars. The collar is red and is surrounded by white and black fur. Just to make sure I understand, as I use the two tools, even with the Aligned option deselected, I will need to keep identifying source pixels multiple times as I brush out the collar. There is absolutely no way ((I tried the single click) to select one source and brush wherever I like on the photo and remove the replace the pixels with the one source. Thank you for your patience, Jim.

  • Healing brush working half of the time

Hello guys. I ve started to use Photoshop cc and I am having really irritating issue with it that I never had with previous versions. My healing brush working with 50/50 success rate. After I pressed ALT then I am putting my pen on skin that I want to fix and it is working half of times, so I am sitting and re-pressing many times on same pieces, which slows me down badly. Also animation of brush not going either, same issue when I am doing with mouse. I have other really old version of Photoshop and it is working proper, what is wrong with my CC version?
    I am using CC x64, Windows 7

  • Healing brush/clone stamp cursor is dark.

I hope I've overlooked something very simple.  In CS3 on my PC, the circular cursor for healing brush and clone stamp (probably others, too) is always a contrasting color to the underlying image so the circle is always very visible.  With the same preferences set, CS4 always has a very dark, perhaps black circular cursor, so that in dark areas, it completely disappears, making it difficult to select the correct area.
Just me, my PC or CS4?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the answer.
I have not mentioned the GPU because the processes I described (as far as I know) are not supposed to be using GPU resources. So far I have not been able to afford the GPU i want which is GTX770, so I use Intel 4600 built in graphics instead. To be honest I find, that 4600 graphics is quite powerful. I am able to play Mass Effect 3 on Full spec on max res without game slowing down. And Windows 7 64bit index score is 7.8 for the 4600 graphics. Overall index score is 7.8 on my PC righ now.
I'll try to get the Photoshop system info as soon as possible.
    Thanks again.

  • Will upscaling or using clone stamp/healing brush to upsize give better resolution?

I'm designing a 5.25" square CD cover using a rectangular image and the resolution needs to be min. 300ppi to print .  The artist sent me the art image (painting) from her camera as a jpeg and it goes to photoshop as a large (approx 20" X 24") file at 72 ppi.  To change the ppi to 300 without resampling (I've been told this is best), the image becomes too narrow (4 1/2") and too high (5.9").
I don't want to crop because I don't want to lose content.  I want the image to completely cover the CD cover  And I want to keep the same proportions for certain parts of the image.  So I believe my two best options are as follows:
    1.  Bring the image to 300ppi with the measurements above, protect certain parts of the image on an alpha channel, content aware scale the rest of the image wider to make it square and then resize down a bit for the CD cover or
    2.  Bring the image to 300ppi and then use the clone stamp and healing brush tool or content aware fill (doesn't work so well on this image) to duplicate and extend the sides of the image to widen and square it and then resize down a bit for the CD cover.
Does anyone know which of these options will give the best resolution?  Is upscaling more likely to cause pixelization than the other option?  Is there a better way?  Should I do options 1 and 2 to the large 72 resolution image instead of bringing it to 300ppi first and then upscale or clone stamp--would that give better results?
Thanks, any help is greatly appreciated!

You've said that you don't want to crop, and you want to cover the entire CD cover. That leaves you with two choices. Extend the short side(s) via cloning, content aware fill, etc. or stretch the image in one direction, either with the standard free-transform or with content aware transform. See what looks best. Your resolution will be fine. You can res up if you need to. The amount you're short will not matter here. Leave room for bleed - usually 1/8".

  • Using the healing brush tool

Anybody able to give me a simple explanation of how to use the healing brush tool to retouch  photograph?

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium...  And I'm using Photoshop Elements 10 with a Wacom Intous 4 tablet and pen.    I noticed this behavior right after a forced reboot from a Microsoft update yesterday.  I was editing a pic when it rebooted.
Now, the behavior only manifests itself within Photoshop Elements when I use tools that use reference points such as the clone tool or healing brush.  It's a trailing dot that seems to echo the reference point; which eventually catches up to place itself right under the tip as I make a stroke.   I can't really see what I'm doing, so I end up making a big mess of things on my pics.  This also occurs using my logitech mouse...   Check the mouse settings as well, and it not using any trail options.
Called Wacom and they had me uncheck "use microsoft ink" from within the Wacom properties.  They identified the problem as the "ripple effect."     I've disabled the "press and hold" feature the "pen and touch" options in windows,  disable the Tablet PC Input service, and made edits to "TurnOffPenFeedback"  in, both, the local machine and local user in order to disable it.  So far, nothing has worked.   If it makes a difference, I noticed that every time I edit the local user registry entry, it enables itself after each reboot.   Haven't fingered the cause of this yet.     Please let me know if you have any other ideas.  Thanks!

  • CS5 Healing brush & Clone tool Strange Problems

When I option click a sample point to heal or clone, then release the mouse or pen, the sampled area remains in the brush diameter even though I haven't healed or cloned anything yet.  Just moving the mouse or pen around includes the image of the sampled area all over the image.  What gives?
Wasn't always like this, just last few days.  For example if I select and area with lips on a face, then move the brush to the cheek, the image of the lips remains in the brush area.  Very frustrating.  Any help would be much appreciated.  This is with both the healing brush and clone stamp tools.
    Mac OS 10.6.3, MacPro 2 X 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel 16GB ram NVIDIA GE-Force 8800 GT graphics card running CS5 in 32 bit mode.

That is a preference that was added in Photoshop CS4 to preview the cloned area (makes it easier to align).
Go to the Clone Source palette, and turn off "Show Overlay" if you don't want to see the preview.
You might want to take some time to read up on the Clone Source palette, and the options it offers -- it can really speed up a lot of common cloning tasks.

  • Problem Defining Source in CS5 for Clone Stamp and Healing Brush

I am struggling to define the source point for clone stamp or healing brush in Photoshop CS5. When I first installed the program it was working just as the instructions were set out in the help menu (e.g. alt click to define the source and then move the cursor to find the area to fix). I don't know what has happened, or if I've accidentally re-set something, but now when I 'alt-click' the entire photo is selected, and even when I let go, there is a layer consisting of the entire photo (not just one point) that moves over an exact copy of the same photo underneath. This happens regardless of whether I've created an extra adjustment layer. Help! (it used to work just fine. I don't know what I've done to change it)

Ok I am not sure what you are trying to do, but I believe it is to repair or correct some anomoly on an image you are working on.
With CS5 there is the patch tool the healing brush tool and the new spot healing tool (very cool of you have not played with it yet.)
I think what you are looking at, The "Clone Stamp" is not the tool you are looking for. the clone stamp esentually does exactly what you are talking about. It clones the layer you have highlighted so when you run your brush it paints that image.
The healing and redeye removal tools are all one grouping right click on the brush to make your choice.
    I hope this helps.

  • Applying results of healing brush to a new layer?

Is there a way to use the healing brush or spot healing brush by applying the changes you are making to a new blank layer instead of the original layer?
    Thanks.

With the spot healing brush make sure you have sample all layers checked
    before healing on blank layer.
With the healing brush make sure you select either Sample current and below
or Sample all layers before using the healing brush on a blank layer.
Also if you have any adjustment layers you can click on the button to the
right of the sampling options to ignore adjustment layers when healing.
