LR and Wide Screen Monitors

Probably a simple question so kindly bear with me on this one. I have the opportunity of picking up a wide screen monitor in the next couple of days at a reasonable price - 19" 1440 x 900. My question, how will LR appear on this size monitor - will it fill the screen or will I experience black banding at the top and bottom? I like the idea of the further width to increase the panels but hate banding even on TV

Hi Alan
I have the Dell 2407 monitor (1920 x 1200) which has the same aspect ratio (1:1.6) as your proposed monitor. I find this monitor "perfect" for LR - it looks like LR was designed with this aspect ratio in mind (consider that most digital cameras have a 1:1.5 aspect ratio).
If you hide the left and right panels then you will only have a small "black band" on the left and right of the image. In all other situations this screen will be well utilized.

  • 19 inch wide screen monitor problem

My daughter has my old 450MHz G3 (10.3.9). We bought her a 19 inch wide screen monitor for Christmas. I hooked it up for her and booted the machine. Everything came up fine although the monitor resolution was set to a somewhat funky resolution of 1350? x something, I don't remember exactly. I set it to the monitor's native resolution of 1440 x 900 thru the display preferences and it took that fine.
My daughter shut down the machine that night and when she booted it the next morning, the monitor displays the message "No Input Signal" (or something to the effect). I haven't had a chance to get over there and look at it yet, but the only idea I have to fix the problem offhand is to reset the machine's PRAM.
I'm puzzled that after initially hooking the monitor up the machine had no trouble feeding it a signal, but after a shutdown and reboot, it has a problem. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.
    B & W G3 450MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I zapped the PRAM on the machine and it booted up fine. The monitor's display was set to 1440 x 900 when it finished booting. I found this a bit mysterious, as I figured zapping the PRAM would reset it to the resolution it had when I first hooked it up.
To test things, I shut the computer down and rebooted it. Once again, the monitor gave the "No Input Signal" message and remained off. So I restarted the computer and did the PRAM zap again and it once again came up fine w/the resolution at 1440 x 900.
I told my daughter to have the machine go to sleep rather than shut it down and I set the energy saver preference to do so. She's had no problems since I did that, but I'd really like to know why shutting the machine down is causing the resolution confusion.
Jeff replied to this thread suggesting to really fix the problem I may need to get a graphics card that natively supports the 1440 x 900 resolution. I've thought of that possibility, but it's not very attractive since, unless I could find a cheap used card, I'd probably have to spend about as much for a card as I could sell the machine for.

  • Question about wide-screen monitor on Solaris x86

    I have Solaris x86, version 10/2009 installed.
It works fine with any wide-screen monitor I plug in.
But when I use this 3rd party CAD/CAM software, any round
circle is being displayed as an oval shape. I believe that's because
on the wide-screen monitor, the width of the monitor is longer than the height.
Does anyone know if there's a setting to change so that I can view circles as true round circles instead of an oval shape? Thanks.

OK, I know what the problem is now.
But I need to change the resolution settings. Does anyone know how to change it on x86, version 10/2009?
I recall it being something like "kdmconfig"

  • The display doesn't go as wide as our wide screen monitor

Previously we used IE, the display would fill the width of our wide screen monitor, but with Firefox it is only using about half of the monitor. Seems ok with other applications so assuming its a firefox thing?

  • Help with colour profiles and wide gamut monitor

    Hi there,
I know this issue must crop up a lot due to its confusing nature but I would really appreciate it if someone could explain what settings I should be using in Photoshop to get accurate colours. I had a look around and couldn't find any other discussions that answered this exactly.
My set up is a Dell 2408WFP monitor which is wide-gamut. I have calibrated this using a huey Pro calibrator (therefore have an accurate system colour profile). My photos are in Canon sRGB space, set by Digital Photo Professional (obviously easily changed if need be).
What I would like is to be able to preview what my photos will look like on a standard sRGB display. When I open a photo in Photoshop with all the settings on their default it looks extremely washed out, very low contrast and saturation. This is nothing like what the photos look like outside of Photoshop, and also not what the photos look like on other (normal gamut) displays. I have tried using the "proof colours" settings. When I have "proof setup" set to Internet Standard sRGB the colours look dreadful, oranges become blood-red, definitely not what I am getting when I view the image on a standard monitor. If I have it set to Monitor RGB then I get colours that look like my monitor outside of Photoshop -- this is the closest out of the three to the result I am actually getting on standard gamut displays. However I know it is not accurate because I know my monitor is wide gamut and therefore more has more contrast (and this is the case).
So what combination of photo colour space, proof colour space, and proof colours settings should I be using? My main priority is just the Joe Average using his TN panel monitor on facebook, I accept that on my monitor they will look slightly different. Settings for print don't concern me at the moment.
Thanks for the help. To anyone who will suggest that I read up on colour profiles... I have, and I understand them to an extent, but there are so many variables here that I am getting lost (monitor profile, photo profile, photoshop settings, DPP settings, faststone viewer's settings, browser's lack of awareness...)

    You have no idea.
What I'm reading is that you want Photoshop, with its color management enabled, to display your sRGB photos as they would be seen on a true sRGB monitor - i.e., accurately.
Something to always keep in mind, when everything's set right and working properly:  Your sRGB image displayed on your wide gamut monitor without color management (e.g., by Internet Explorer) will look bolder and brighter (more color-saturated) than the same image displayed in Photoshop with color-management.  There is no getting around this, because the sRGB profile is not equivalent to the monitor profile.  Do not expect them to look the same.
It's hard, without being there and seeing what you're seeing, to judge whether your sRGB images are undersaturated compared to what's seen on other monitors.  I do know, as one with sRGB monitors myself, that images can look quite vibrant and alive in the sRGB color space.
What we can't know is whether your judgment that your color-managed sRGB images are undersaturated is correct in an absolute sense, or whether you're just feeling the difference between seeing them on your monitor in non-color-managed apps and Photoshop.
Photoshop normally does its color management like this:  It combines the information from the color profile in your document with the color profile of the monitor, which it retrieves from a standard place in Windows, and creates a transform used to display the colors.
To have it do this you would NOT want the Proof Colors setting enabled.  It is the default behavior.
    -Noel
P.S., I don't recall whether DPP is color-managed, but you might consider using Photoshop's raw converter, which definitely shows color-managed output, per the settings I described above.
P.P.S.,  Your calibrator/profiler should have put the monitor profile in the proper place and set all the proper stuff up in Windows.  Is it specifically listed as compatible with the version of Windows you're running?

  • Working with ProRez and wide screen 16x9

So I am trying to edit HD down to SD using ProRez. FinalCut won't let me edit my sequence in real time unless I have it set to 720x480 with the Anamorphic check box clicked. The problem with this is that when I export out to quicktime and open it anywhere the video is now squished because quicktime is not recognizing that it's a wide screen file.
If I make my sequence 853x480 it will export just fine but FCP makes me render every clip to have it play in the time line. Anyone else having an experience like this?
I would love to be able to either edit with Square pixels at 853x480 or just have the widescreen work in 720.

  • Regular and wide screen output viewing

    Hi,
I was wondering if it is possible to create a project so that
it will be diplayed properly (page nicely filled and not having to
scroll) regardless if the audience is viewing the output on a
regular screen or on a wide screen.
I have a widescreen and at the moment I change the settings
of my computer to a lower resolution to record for 'regular'
screens. But is there a way to record so that I can cater to
widescreen and regular audiences at the same time?
    thanks!
    Jennifer

    Welcome to our community, Jennifer
You might try simply linking to the .SWF as the output as
opposed to the HTML file. This normally causes the file to scale to
fit the browser size. However, you still may not see it completely
fill the area. There may still be blank areas on the sides or the
    top and bottom.
Life is always a trade off, eh? Seems you fix one issue only
to see a different issue arise as a result.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Flash and wide-gamut monitors

hello, I'm French, sorry if I write bad English.
there is a big problem flash when displayed on a monitors
    "wide gamut".
for example, a photo gallery directed with flash in Adobe
Lightroom, colors are saturated, especially red.
the problem appears in Internet Explorer, this is normal, but
also in Firefox with enabled the management of color profiles.
it seems that the Adobe Flash player is unable to display
exactly colors on monitors types wide-gamut, despite the
calibration of the display and management profiles. ccc in Firefox.
Excuse me for my bad English ;)

  • 15" MBP and Wide Gamut monitor

Does anyone know if the late 2008 MBP 15" (with dual graphics cards) will support one of the newer wide gamut displays at 10 or 12 bits of color?
If not, is it a limitation of this particular hardware, or would any high-end Mac have the same problem.
    Thanks
    nwmtnguy

Mac users are running wide-gamut displays successfully but there are apparently some tricky issues.

I don't think that advice really covers it. As I said, Mac users are using those displays already and have written about them. nwmtnguy, I think you would have much better luck with answers if you asked your question on a forum with high-end color Mac users. • HP LP2465 24" Wide External Monitor Unrecognized?

I have a HP LP2465 24" Wide screen monitor. Similiar problem to ScottsMac message.
Setup: The monitor has two DVI inputs/outputs. I have a DVI adapter to VGA dongle. The DVI end is plugged into the monitor and the free end is a VGA connector. I'm using the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. The VGA adapter is plugged into the VGA endpoint coming from the monitor. The Mini-DVI adapter is than plugged into the MacBook. No signal recognized by the computer? The monitor goes to sleep.
Should I try a DVI to DVI cable (from monitor to mini-DVI to DVI connector)avoiding the VGA connection altogether?
The monitor works fine from an IBM Thinkpad to monitor (VGA(computer) to DVI(monitor). John

Problem resolved. I simply used a mini-DVI to DVI adapter instead of the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. For some reason the MacBook doesn't send a VGA signal? I plugged the mini-DVI adapter into the MacBook. The DVI end was joined to a male DVI adapter. The other end of the DVI adapter was plugged into the monitor (DVI connector). By making the whole link DVI and eliminating the VGA link the problem resolved.

  • Video Driver for wide screen

I have a Dell 20" wide screen monitor that requires a resolution of 1680 X 1050. I have the standard ATI Rage 128 graphics card and have updated the software, but that resolution is not available.
The color and clarity look great running at 1280 x 1024, but it is distorting the image width by stretching it.
If anybody else is running a wide screen that has been able to solve this problem, your tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jamie
    G3   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   ATI Rage 128

Sorry, but it seems that the Rage 128 card is only capable of up to 1280x1024 3D, according to ATI.
The image is stretched to fit your screen whenever the display is not running at its native resolution.
The reason for the limited resolution of the card is the VRAM. At 16MB (Rage ORION), it can't really do much.
For a simple solution, you might just consider the Radeon 7000. It will definitely support your LCD's resolution.

  • How can I unstretch a wide-screen image to a 5:3 aspect ratio?

  • Safari and website screen sizes

    Hi,
Why is it that this website (the apple discussion forum) displays nicely across the full width of my imac but most other websites are narrow, barely reaching halfway across. The safari window goes all the way across but the page content doesn't. for example expedia.co.uk or itsagoal.com don't display in widescreen.
Is this a website fault or a browser limitation?
    Thanks
    Lee

What you are seeing is the result of different web-page design philosophies.
There are two basic ways to layout a web page.
At one extreme is a dynamic layout which assumes that it cannot be know what resolution the viewer will be using or what size window the browser will be opened to or resized to. This kind of web page will flow and resize itself as you drag your window around adjusting it to different sizes.
At the other extreme is the page-layout model derived from old-fashioned hard-copy layout practices in which the designer wants complete control of what appears where. These pages will not resize as you adjust the size of your browser window, but will either cause the browser to add horizontal scroll bars if the window is made to small or will leave blank areas to the right if the window is made to large. Some designers limit the width of their pages so that they will fit in a browser window at a medium resolution, meaning that if you have a high resolution or a wide-screen monitor you will see the blank areas to the right.
Some designers compromise between the two extremes so that some elements will flow as you resize the browser window while others will not.
