LR CC external editor only option is PS CC 2014 (not 2015)

Updated all my PS products, including LR CC (2015) and PS CC. When exporting from LR to PS for editing, only option is PS CC 2014 (instead of PS CC). Preferences in LR doesn't allow for pointing to a different PS version, unless using the custom external editor option. Any suggestions? Perhaps this is a bug with the new LR version. I will say my hard drive is getting very cluttered with the myriad of PS and LR versions, many with the "CC" name. Hard to keep track of which is the latest version (especially with LR since I had stand alone, then upgraded to CC subscription).

If you don't need the older versions of the programs, just uninstall them.
As Mattzory suggests, the common reason one might want to keep an older version of PS is for the "oil paint" filter. To do this, you would probably need to setup the old version of PS manually as a separate editor. Alternatively, you might try launching the old PS program first, then do the LR "edit in PS" as LR might just then talk to the currently running version instead of launching a new copy of PS.

External Editor only TIFF and PSD

I want to edit my photos in Photoshop but in the Preferences there are only the TIFF's and PSD formats supported - since my original files come as JPEG's it would be sufficient to safe the files as high quality JPEG's. Is there a possibility to edit a PLIST file in Aperture, that this option gets visible in the Preferences?

I can state this would not be a good way at all to handle this situation. The problem is this - you have been working on color and other adjustments based on the Aperture RAW conversion (which itself you have probably carefully tweaked as to sharpness and noise reduction).
Using DNG and going to some other program to edit, you are relying now on the ability of that other program to do exactly the same RAW conversion and also do all of the adjustments Aperture did in exactly the same way. As you might imagine, no other program has a hope of doing the conversion and adjustments exactly as Aperture does them, for they are not Aperture. Thus when you did sharpening or some other adjustment in that other program it would be based on a different RAW conversion that may well not have the exact same combination of RAW adjustments applied.
That is why when moving to other programs to continue editing a rendered format (such as TIFF) is the way to go, because it exactly preserves all of the editing you have done to that point.
As to the posters original question it would not actually be that great an idea to send a JPG over to the external editor because it would have to be a brand new JPG with your adjustments applied, and then when you saved it from the external editor you'd have a 3rd generation JPG file and every time you edited it after you'd have yet another generation of JPG loss.
What you can do to conserve some space is to select PSD for external editing, and then in Photoshop (or whatever you open the file in) convert to 8-bit mode (by default it's 16).
Just think of ti this way - that JPG is no longer a JPG, it's your new master! Preserve quality at all costs (well at least space costs).
Messing with the plist file may give you an 8-bit PSD file directly, I have not messed with those settings after 1.1.1 came out.

Edit in External Editor only accepts a limited number of photos

I occasionally want to edit a number of photos from my iPhoto library in an external editor (Photoshop). I have properly configured (as far as I know) the "Edit in external editor" setting, and it works correctly when I select a single photo. When I batch select multiple photos, the results vary: regardless of how many photos I select, Photoshop will only open somewhere between 1 and 4 of them. It seems to do better with shift+click to select rather than cmd+click, but in no case will it open more than 4 photos. Much of the time it will only open 2 photos, even if I have selected 7 or 8.
Is there a way to open an arbitrary number of photos in an external editor?
I'm using iPhoto 7.1.5 on OS 10.5.8. The external editor is Photoshop CS3.

No there isn't. You can't send more than four at a time I'm afraid.

Blend for Visual Studio's HTML/CSS WYSIWYG editor only usable for Windows 8 apps, NOT for web apps?

Hi there,
In the process of learning Visual Studio (VS) and ASP.NET, I initially thought that I could use Blend for VS's seemingly great HTML/CSS WYSIWYG editor to visually design the HTML pages and CSS for a web app developped with VS, whether it be with ASP.NET MVC
or Django (using Python Tools for Visual Studio).
But now it dawned on me that Blend for VS seems to only be meant to design HTML/CSS for native Windows
8 apps, and not
web apps.
Can someone confirm that this is indeed the case?

PS: Maybe this a dumb newbie question, but from the outside, it seems rather counter-intuitive to offer a top-notch tool for web
standards (HTML/CSS) edition (Blend for VS), all integrated with a top-notch tool for web development (VS) but prohibiting the web developer community to leverage the productivity gains of both
the former and the integration. This is especially puzzling given that the latest components of the ASP framework (MVC, SPA projects):
- Pushes for reliance on HTML elements and CSS instead of ASP elements and Skin files;
- VS apparently also does not provide a visual design page view for ASP.MVC projects, which is sure to make many development teams wary of migrating from web forms to MVC.

I believe this the case, but I'm not familiar with asp.net development. As you point out: html is html so you can edit and copy the code. That said, the Windows Store apps forums are specifically about writing Windows Store apps. For discussion

Can't get external editor to work

Using LTR 3.6 on iMac, external editor PSE 10. I choose option to open in the external editor after applying any LTR changes. File is created in LTR, external editor is opened, but image file is not opened. It used to work fine. I had a hard disk failure recently, installed new drive, restored everything from Time Machine back up. All apps seem to work fine. I also reset the external editor in preferences (from PSE 8 to 10) to no effect. Any ideas?

I currently have the same problem, but have found a temporary solution while looking for a permanent one. The temporary solution involves resetting the SMC. To do this follow these steps:
-First connect the cable to both your TV and your MacBook Pro and make sure both are powered on.
-Then shut down your MacBook Pro
-On the left side of your keyboard press command, alt (option), shift and the power button at the same time, holding them for a second and then releasing them at the same time.
-Wait about 10 seconds and then power on your MacBook Pro, the display should be detected and working.
As I said earlier this is only a temporary solution and I am looking for a permanent one, so any more help would be appreciated.
Let me know if it works or not.

External editor vanished

Suddenly, I am no longer able to access PE6 as my external editor. When I right-click on a photo, nothing happens. Was working fine yesterday.
I go to iPhoto preferences, where one normally selects an external editor under the "general" tab, and am not given the option of PE4 (which is also on my computer) or PE6. The only external editor choice is iPLMedit, whatever the heck that is.
How to get back to PE6?

Go back to iPhoto's preferences and select iPLMedit. That will take you to the browser to either confirm iPLMedit or select a new application. Go and select PSE6 and you're back in business.
I may be preaching to the choir here but FWIW:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Is there a way to connect and view an external monitor only on my Intel iMac?

I have an Acer 15.6" monitor connected to my Intel iMac via VGA cable and Mini-DVI to VGA adapter. I am running Lion (V10 7.3) and would like to direct my image to the external display only. The preferences pane does not offer that option. Is there some way to do it?

Do you have a desktop machine running iTunes?
If so then yes, setup home sharing and you can stream anything in your iTunes library to your iPad.
It works good.

Using Lightroom as my external editor - worked, now broken

For nearly two years, I used Lightroom as my external editor for iPhoto using the following process:
1. Select 'Edit in External Editor'
2. Select Add to Library (not Copy or Move) when the Lightroom import dialogue comes up so that LR is simply pointing to the file my iPhoto library
3. Make all my edits in Lightroom (my original is left untouched at this point, and LR stores data about how to process the original)
4. Export the photo from Lightroom into the same folder as the original using the same filename
At this point, I would get a prompt saying:
"The following files already exist:
[path/to/file]
Do you wish to overwrite the existing files, skip the existing files, or rename the exported files to avoid collision?"
I could simply choose 'Overwrite' and my file in iPhoto would be updated with the changes from LR.
This worked until right after Christmas. Then, in January, the process mysteriously stopped working for any new photos. Now, if I use the same process, I get the following warning:
"You can not choose to overwrite the existing files since some of them are the source files"
Interestingly enough, I can still go back to any of the pre-January images in my LR library and export them back into iPhoto, overwriting the original. I have not updated Lightroom at all, but I suspect I did download an update to iPhoto. Still, I can't figure out what is materially different, and what I might be able to do to get my old workflow back!
Any ideas? And no, I don't need a lecture about the fact that iPhoto and LR are both image library managers, and that I should just switch to LR or use Aperture. I like the way iPhoto organizes my files (Events, Places, etc) and I only end up needing to edit 20% of the photos in an external editor. LR is definitely the editor I prefer and I'm not crazy about Aperture.

Larry you fail to mention that using an external editor with iPhoto will not allow you to save your changes back into the iPhoto library.
Unfortunate you simply are ignorant of how iPhoto works - when you use an external editor with iPhoto and save the edited photo it is returned to the iPhoto database and the iPhoto database is updated correctly.

No - but since these forums are for iPhoto support the users here are very experienced iPhoto users and do use iPhoto a lot - no apologies - just CORRECT information on how to use iPhoto (and if it will not doe what you want sometimes suggestions on where to go to do what yo want)
and they will either try to convince you that other software is not as good

Using elements 9 as external editor

Hi, I bought elements 9 today. I have all my pictures organized in aperture 3. I want to use elements as an external editor. I selected elements as the external editor in aperture 3, but when I try to edit a picture using the external editor via aperture 3, the image will not load into elements.
I get the welcome screen in elements, when I choose edit, the editor opens but no picture is loaded. I also tried to edit via elements used as external editor from aperture when I had elements open. What happens then is the exact same thing only difference is that elements opens again (so that I have to elements apps running at the same time)
Anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong.

You chose the wrong file in the PSE folder. This is about iphoto, but the problem is the same with aperture, lightroom, or any other external editor. See step 2 for directions to the right file:

How do I make Photoshop the external editor

I upgraded to snow leopard and now the "Edit in External Editor" option is grayed out in iPhoto. How do I choose Photoshop as my external editor?

In the iPhoto preferences you set PS as the external editor - when you finish editing you save (not save as) - and the photos is returned to iphoto and the iPhoto database correctly updated to keep the original and the modified version
iPhoto has the capability to directly interface with any external editor - simply go to the iPhoto preferences (iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> General and set the Edit photo option to in external editor - select the desired external editor and you are set - now when you edit photos they are sent to the selected external editor and when you are finished editing you save (not save as) and the edited photo is returned to iPhoto, the original is maintained in iPhoto and the iPhoto database is correctly updated.
If you want the option of editing in either iPhoto or the external editor after selecting your external editor simply set the edit in back to main window - now when you right click (control Click) on a photo you will get a menu which allows you to select either.

Studio 11 freezes when using external editor

A heavy user of Sun Development Software on our research
network has encountered the following problem with the latest
version of the IDE (Studio 11):
"     A bit of experimenting says that the critical choice is selecting an
external editor:
Tools -> Options -> Editing -> External Editor -> Editor Type = GVim
I was able to get Studio to lock up with both the multiwindow (Traditional SDI)
and single window (One Window MDI) presentation
Tools -> Options -> System -> System Settings -> User Interface
if you want to play with it. It's harder to lock up in single window mode.
     I didn't test with Emacs. Using CDE with a vanilla cshrc and login was
bad enough. There are some things I just won't do :-).
     My suspicion is that there's some sort of a race condition, as Studio
will start and function correctly on occasion (maybe once in five tries). But
even when it starts and works ok on my toy test program, it hangs reliably when
I try to load one of the big executables from the COIN code."
He's using a Sun Blade 150 running Sol,Solaris 9 and had been
able to recreate the problem in both Gnome and CDE.

I've seen a similar problem and it had a very simple solution. When
gvim starts, it sometimes posts a message and waits for input. It
doesn't redraw after its printed the message. The message can be
as simple as the initial file-loaded message (if its long enough, it
truncates the load message and puts a 'Hit Return' or 'More' message
at the end. Or it can be a message telling a swap file exists and
asking what you want to do. Probably other messages as well.
In the case I remember, the IDE was on top of the gvim. Even when
raised, gvim didn't redraw, so I ended up with an apparently hung
gvim.
But it wasn't really hung. It was waiting for input but the message was
lost so I didn't know.
If this is your problem, the answer is simple. Try pressing Return and
see if the gvim redraws. You might also try ^C if Return doesn't work.
If its a different problem then it sounds like a new bug and I'd need
enough information to reproduce it. We tested it before release, and
didn't run into any serious problems (and this certainly sounds
serious). So let me know (this forum is a good enough way) if that
solves the problem or not.
Also, although I prefer the SDI mode, the core IDE (NetBeans 3.5.1)
doesn't support it well. I strongly recommend running in MDI mode.

Can I use PSE 10 as an external editor for iPhoto?

I just downloaded a trailversion of PSE10. Than I selected it as external editor in iPhoto.
As I clicked on a Photo in iPhoto and selected "edit in external editor" PSE10 started, but the photo did not appeared as it is used in PSE8 for example.

Lightroom 3.2 external editor problem

Hello,
I have been experiencing problems with using external editors in Lightroom 3.2. Currently there are 3 external editors which display a problem (but all of which work fine as an external editor or stand-alone program). Those are Alien Skin's new Exposure 3 and Bokeh 2 and also Photoshop CS5. Whenever I use CS5 as an external editor, it will not open the file itself (this is all Mac OSX by the way), when I use EITHER Alien Skin program I get a weird result where the Path it chooses is a Time Machine backup and it will NOT edit my Lightroom file ...
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated !! as I said - all of these "plug-ins" work fine in stand alone mode - also Photoshop CS5 works fine OTHER than when it is used as an external editor from Lightroom.

When I "show in finder", the file is shown in the correct path/location on the disk, which would suggest there should be no problem with editing in external editors, however the problem persists with CS5 not loading the actual file, and with Alien Skin plug-ins being unable to find the file (looking in wrong path) - here is a screenshot of "get info" for an image:

Lightroom is not an editor - it is a photo manager just like iPhoto and each must control its own photos - editors are programs like Photo Shop
Managers like Lightroom, bridge and Aperture import and manage photos just like iPhoto does
You must choose one photo manager (except iPhoto and Aperture do have some limited cross application capability)

This issue has been reported numerous times in the last few months on this forum and the elements forum. Surprisingly the solution for some has been to save the file in PSE with the "save as" command instead of the "save" command. I know, this is the opposite of what "they" say but after seeing that solution in the forum several months ago I started following this rec and have not had a problem since, when before I too was having problems with the edits in PSE being saved back to LR 5.3. I don't know whether this is a bug in LR or PSE but there have been enough reports that it clearly is an issue. Adobe, however, is strangely silent on this. Imagine that! Anyway, give that a try and see if that works. Can't hurt.
