LR making random folders and breaking up folders into other names

I have something very odd happening in Lightroom.
Last week I opened a folder I had imported the day before and all the images had strange names and had turned into dots and other things. I deleted the weirdness and re-imported the files.
This morning Lightroom has a whole bunch of new folders! In these folders are photos I imported yesterday. The original folder import is not there and it looks like all the images have been split into all these small folders. The odd folder names reference iPhoto files. For example:
"Folders/Resources at/Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources/Themes/Folio-Hardcover.IPBookTheme/Contents /12 photos".
And the files all have names like "French.lproj" or "Localizable.strings".
The folder is on my hard drive with all the correct file names.
Please help! This does not seem like a good thing that is happening!

This should be my last time back to this thread, but I had to come back and say that my problem was user error. It wasn't the apps, and there was really no need for a restore. It was that I thought I understood something I had been asked about. I found out today after more research on it that I was not using the new software update correctly. I didn't realize, until someone here mentioned it, that there was a NEW user guide for the iPad explaining it in terms of the 4.2.1 update. I apologize! I get it now. I lost audio in some apps, but not all of them. I couldn't understand why. Was my iPad muted? Yes, but I did not understand the new way that it all worked. I had gone through the system prefs and thought that controlled it. I didn't understand the changes in the buttons that people kept referring to. Really, thank you to those who tried to explain and help. Anyone else having trouble, forget that you read the original user guide, especially if you are a new owner like me. Go to the iPad Support section and download the user guide for 4.2.1. It explains more than you'll ever know. (And I should have known better!) I'm still not sure why folders exploded and apps went everywhere, but it's not happening now that they are all through being "set". No more complaints here!

Suddenly I don't have my own trash, but an IMAP trash folder.  I have this new IMAP icon on the left of my mail folder.  What's going on?

Following up: I went with Option 2 above, and it seems to have worked quite well. I didn't even need to quit iTunes. After the files were moved, the exclamation marks remained at first, until I played the file, or restarted iTunes - now all seems well, until the next crash anyway.

  • Is there a script (or plugin) that will take a photo and break it up into parts?

Is there a script or plug-in out there that will take a picture and break it up into various parts (squares for example.)  The idea would be that you could automate and rapidly create a photo collage of a single image.  (See examples of what I mean in attached pics.)
    Thanks!

    You get the idea.

OK, I'm going to edit this post now that I'm at a computer with an actual step by step.
Create a new comp the size of you our final delivered project.
Add a photo to the timeline
Note the size of the photo and the scale to position the photo at it's final resting place
Calculate twice the height and width of the photo and create a new solid that is this size
Place the solid above the photo
Create a mask in the solid at the exact center that is the size shape you want for your photo frame
Either invert the mask or set the mask property to Subtract to reveal a small portion of the photo
Set the solid as a alpha inverted track matte for the photo (you should now see only a portion of the photo
Add a rectangular shape layer with only a stroke to act as the photo frame over the mask. You may have to use two shapes or create a mask on a shape if you want to simulate polaroids
Make the shape layer the parent of the solid you are using as a track matte so the matte will stay lined up with the frame
Here comes the fun, select all layers and duplicate them using Ctrl/Cmnd + D
Immediately hold down Shift + Ctrl/Cmnd + } to move all duplicates to the top
Select the top shape layer and move the shape layer frame into a new position
    Pre-compose the top 3 layers
Press the y key to select the Pan Benind or Anchor Point tool and move the pre-comp's anchor point to the center of the top frame
Repeat step 11 through 15 until you have arranged your montage (it might be a good idea to have a template set up as a guide layer so you know where to put the frames
Select all pre-comps and press Alt/Option + P to set a position keyframe for each pre-comp
With all of the keyframe selected move them down the timeline about 3 seconds
Now, with the CTI at the first frame drag each pre-comp into a starting position for that frame
Preview and adjust the timing, then turn on motion blur
Your images will now assemble themselves into the final montage.
There is no script that I know of that will do all of this automatically, but it would not be too hard to write a script that would do the pre-composing if you have a ton of these to do. I'm guessing that with a little practice you could have a new picture frame created and moved into position in less than a minute. It takes me about 30 seconds. That means a 20 frame sequence should take you about a half hour. It might not be worth writing a script unless you have a ton of these to do. Select the bottom three layers and duplicate (Ctrl/Cmnt + D), group them at the top (Shift + Ctrl/Cmnd + } ), move the top frame layer into position, then Shift + Ctrl/Cmnd + C to pre-compose, then move the anchor point of the pre-comp, then do it again.... When you're done set a few keyframes.
As I said, you could write a script, but you'd need a different script to move each frame into position and the script would only work for one layout. If you made a template to put on the bottom so you knew where do place the frames and which order you wanted them you could do this by hand very quickly. The sample project that I'm including which was just quickly thrown together took me less than 10 minutes. Replace my photo with one of yours and you'll get the idea.
Dropbox - photoMontage1_CS6.aep (Note: Dropbox will probably add a .txt extension to the .aep file. Just delete it and you should be able to open the project.

  • How to share My Folders  and My filters contents to other User ?

    Hi All ,
How can we share the contents of My folders and My filters to other user?
The scenario is like below -
Let's say i have 2 users , Administrator and XYZ . Both the users belong to Administrators Group.
The user Administrator creates some request and filters and save it in My folders and My filters respectively. Now Administrator wants to share these saved requests and filters to user XYZ.
How can Administrator share it with user XYZ?
Do i need to put all the saved requests and filters in shared folders to share with user XYZ ?
Or is there any way to share these contents without putting in the shared folders?
    -- Ashish

Copy those reports into a shared folder. That's the whole point of having "My" and "Shared" folders :)
If you have a lot of objects that need to be copied, consider using the Catalog Manager tool where you can manipulate multiple objects at the same time.

  • Making weird noise and won't go into disc mode and all kinds of icons

after having many problems, i managed to get my ipod into disc mode and format it. However, i'm still having similar problems. When i turn it on, it goes on normally but when i connect it to my computer it freezes it. When i try to restart the ipod while connected to the computer, i get the battery is discharged icon, or sometimes the sick icon first and then the discharged icon, and i'm not able to put it into disc mode. After i get the icons, the only way i can get it to start again is to toggle the hold switch many times (took me awhile to figure this out..). Also, the ipod makes a weird repeated disc noise sometimes when its connected or if i'm starting it. If i try to restart the ipod without it being connected to the computer, i get the sick icon until i toggle the hold switch. can anybody help? thanks!
actually, i've managed to get it into disc mode, but it just makes the repeated weird noise nonstop and it doesn't let me open any programs on my computer so i can't format it.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)
    http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html
2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

  • FF 5 bookmarks pulldown menu is broken -- cannot go from individual bookmark folders back to main bookmark list -- sticks on the folders and won't move to other bookmarks -- system is Intel Mac on OS 10.5.8.

When you go to the bookmarks pulldown menu at the top of the screen, the menu window that opens is much wider than previous browser versions. often stretching the full width of the browser window itself.
In addition, once the cursor opens a bookmarks folder in a contextual side menu, you cannot go back to the main pulldown menu. It sticks there. You have to move the cursor up though the TOP of the contextual menu to free it to close the menu window. Simply moving the cursor back to the original menu does nothing -- the contextual menu sticks open as the active one.
It will often take several attempts to land the cursor on the bookmarks folder you want to open before the cursor will hit it without opening other nearby folders, getting stuck in the process. I can't just move the cursor to what I'd like to open. (Cursor is functioning normally in all other apps and windows.)
All other menus are fine. This occurs only with the bookmarks menu.
Machine is an Imac dual core 2.25 running Leopard 10.5.8. Firefox is version 5.0.
This behavior is repeatable on both a fresh download of FF5 and on the upgraded 4.0 to 5. Does not matter if launched in full mode or safe mode with no plugins -- same menu bug.
All plugins are updated, including Download Helper, Flash, Shockwave, Silverlight and a few others. They all pass the plugin tests.
This menu bug happens every time the FF browser is opened. No exceptions.
Would sure love to have version 4 back until this bug is fixed, but I can no longer locate it on the Firefox website. As it currently sits, the browser is virtually unusable. :-(

Small correction to original post. Machine is an iMac 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. (I was at home when I made the first post.) But the bookmarks menu behavior still exists today and FF 5 is essentially unusable.
System details next to the post are not for machine with the bug in question.
Found a copy of FF4 to use until a solution is found. Turned off automatic updates to preserve this version.

  • Merging existing 2013 Public Folders and 2010 Public Folders from different organization.

Following recent acquisition of another company we faced the following situation:
Company A has Exchange 2013 Organization up and running and already using new Public Folders migrated from 2010 when we upgraded.
Company B has Exchange 2010 Organization with their own PF infrastructure.
When it comes to migration, there's already public folder mailbox which was created when first migration occured.
I cant figure next steps to merge those PF infrastructures at the moment, as removing public folder mailbox prior migration is not an option, since we already have big amount of data in 2013 Organization.
Have anyone done similiar task and if so, how did you overcome this limitation?

You're looking at a third-party product.  MigrationWiz does public folders.  There are other cloud-based migration solutions, but I don't know whether they support public folder migrations.

  • Animation works in preview, and breaks once inserted into a page as .oam

I built a simple animation that allows a user to step forward and backward through the timeline. I was able to leverage code from the Edge blog, so I'm pretty sure it's solid. The animation even previews well, but when I publish to .oam and reference the file from a different directory, the animation suddenly breaks. I really don't know what to do.
I've tried creating a blank page in the same directory as the .oam file, and it is still breaking.
When I say it breaks, what is happening is it appears a specific point in the timeline where an element should fade out, but it doesn't. Instead it remains as the other elements continue to work properly.
Any ideas how to test this problem?
Here is the code for my "back" button:
    var current = sym.getVariable("current");
       if (current != "start") {
          sym.getSymbol("the_wheel").playReverse();
       else {
          sym.getSymbol("the_wheel").playReverse("end");
    sym.setVariable("current", "the_wheel");

    Hi Sarah,
I uploaded fresh files. Sorry, I have so many versions right now, it's hard to keep things straight.
    http://dezylum.com/wheel/wheel.html
I'm testing on Mac and PC:
Mac: Safari and Chrome (both up to date)
PC: Firefox, Chrome and IE (all up to date)
Note: the files TEST from Edge just fine. It's only when I publish to the .oam file, insert the link into my page and test it that way that the animation breaks.
When navigating forward or backward through the animation, the color bars that are in between the light blue circle and the darker arrows should fully fade in to a light color and fully fade out to white as the next light bar fades in. When you navigate backward and reach the dark blue arrow, and click back again to reach the yellow-orange arrow, the light blue bar gets stuck when fading to the yellow-orange bar. Here is a screen grab.
The light blue bar should fade completely to white, but does not until you navigate back and reach the dark orange arrow. I hope that makes sense .
Thanks for your help and attention!

  • 2 questions - 1st relates to .ion files and 2 folders and sub-folders

I'll try and keep this brief in the hope someone can take the time and help me! My background is that I'm a Location Manager for Film and TV and have about 250,000 images (all with discriptions attached!)
1st I have used Acdsee on windows for the past 8 years (V4, as its stable)), I've now moved over to Mac and want to import my images that are all tagged with discript.ion files. Can I do this and how (i must retain the info in these files. )
2nd i may have 50 folders each with 20 - 50 sub folders (so on and so on) if I import them all into iPhoto (and view them on the same page) I'll go nuts, how can I retain my main folders and have sub folders inside them?
    Thanks in advance.

    Stan007:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't think iPhoto would be what you'd want to use. You should look into a DAM (digital asset management) application. I use both iView MediaPro andMedia Expression which are much more versatile and powerful than iPhoto.
I suggest you visit the DAM Forum and see what they say about the various applications that are available. I don't know if EM can read the .ion files but I'm sure someone in the DAM forum can put you on the right path. A wealth of information there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Need advice. Is it necessary to put images in folders and subfolders with LR?

It seems that the concept of spending hours putting files into folders, sub-folders and sub-sub-folders is not needed  with LR. Creating all these folders takes hours, especially if you are like me and need a major reorganization of image organization. My thought is that all images can go into one massive folder as long as they are properly tagged. I can then use LR Smart Collections to essentially virtually organize all my images. I can create many more sorting options using Smart Collections than I can by putting images into a folder. This flies in the face of everything I've learned about storing data on a computer so I'm nervouse to head this direction because it starts with unorganizing my folders and removing all tags so I can start fresh.
I don't want to take this on only to learn I didn't think of a gotcha issue. One drawback is that you are now committed to find anything by using LR or tags only. What do you think?

Okay, then be honest.  What would you do if you were me?....So - give me an honest recommendation on a go-forward path (no "coulda, woulda, shoulda's").
Honestly, I always start off from assessing what you really need or what value you could get from keywording. I wouldn't advise you to add keywords for their own sake.

Meanwhile, I can already find all my images efficiently in seconds in nearly all cases.  I estimate that there is about one situation per year where having a comprehensively keyworded image store would be helpful in saving me time - perhaps 15 minutes each time that happens.
Let's pretend that this isn't quite as black and white as you always put it. Let's say we're mainly talking weddings - typically wedding photographers add few keywords, if any. And let's say you do need to find certain images more often - each time you go to meet prospective clients you want to put on your iPad (you?) a portfolio of your best work for their broad type of wedding. So you might have categories like indoors / outdoors / subaqua, particular venues, age groups, religions through humanist,  formal / weird. Let's assume you do judge it worthwhile to increase the number of keywords.

I could start tagging images now as I collect them.  But then I'd have all those other images that aren't tagged and all the new ones that are.  That means using the smart-collection approach would mean all the new ones were in neat collections, and all the old ones were in a gigantic "untagged" collection with over 100,000 images in it.
Actually, that is the way I would advise you to go. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the possible. It's not at all uncommon that people are put off beginning doing some keywording by the scale of the complete task. But beginning with the images that you're currently working on isn't too much extra effort. Even if it turns out that you never eventually do go back and keyword the old stuff, in a year's time you'll have a whole year's worth tagged. While doing so you'll probably adopt ways to make keywording less of a chore. For example you might add metadata presets to slap on overall keywords for the typical shoot "Wedding, Ceremonies, Christian" and then one or more keyword sets if you can justify putting time into varying the keywords between images - eg Bride, Kids, Cake. I wouldn't waste any time building up a hierarchy (do if you want, or not if you don't).
I simply wouldn't worry about the 100,000 remaining untagged - they'll be easier to tackle once you're you've got the experience / benefits from keywording new stuff. I'd advise you to do it only as and when you need - it's too big a task to do anything else. Let's say you need your best shots of Jewish weddings and - as you're currently keeping a lot of metadata in your head - you know some are in that untagged mass. Find them through the folder system as you do now, whack on some keywords like "Wedding, Jewish, Non-orthodox". All those shots are of the bride - whack on "Bride" (maybe from a keyword set). Hey, she's got an obvious tattoo - let's just add that keyword just in case it'll be useful. And quickly move on. Whatever seems worthwhile.
Although scripting could help, where's the script? Worthwhile to write/adapt one yourself? Instead for folder names I'd just just smart collections to gather image - eg folder name contains "weddings" - and then slap on the keywords. Sure, there will be some duplication between the pseudo-metadata in the folder names and in keywords, but duplication happens with metadata. In fact, it'll be quicker to search by the keyword "Wedding" than search for images with the keyword "Wedding" and / or with the folder name containing "Wedding".
So that's how I'd advise you - start with the new work, and deal with the older stuff ad hoc.

  • How do I create and activate watched folders in Acrobat Pro XI?

Our court reporting firm scans large amounts of client exhibits and would love to set up watched folders to convert images to text files. I know that former versions of Acrobat had separate versions of distiller.  What's the story in Pro XI. What is the recommended way to set up watched folders, if there is one?

As with previous versions Acrobat XI comes with Distiller. As with the previous version the use features of Distiller are the same.
Do note that Distiller only accepts *.PS files as input for creation of PDF.
All scanners initial output is an image file fromat (not *.ps). Other applications take the JPEG, TIFF, etc and process the image into other file formats (e.g., PDF).
    Be well...
