LR Preferences, Presets and Catalog

Can you explain the following:
In LR, I specify “Store Presets with Catalog”
I note that there are two LR folders for Preferences and Presets:
C:\Users\Steven\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom
E:\Lightroom\Lightroom Settings    (E: is my SSD caching drive where I store my Catalog)
Do you understand how the Roaming LR file relates to the LR Settings file and how they both relate to the Presets stored in the Catalog?
I spoke with Adobe Tech Supp yesterday because I was having difficulty migrating LR to my new computer. (I viewed Julieanne Kost’s video, three times, on how to migrate LR, and still had trouble getting all my Preferences and Presets to show up in my new computer.) I asked the Tech Supp Rep to explain what I’m asking you and he had a little difficulty, but finally said: “The Roaming file is for Preferences; the Settings file is for Presets.” When I asked why the same folder names appeared in both he said I can delete the Presets from the Roaming file, and delete the Preferences in the Settings file. I’m not willing to try this, especially since the naming convention isn't always explicit as to which is which.
In addition, I don’t understand why, if the Presets are stored in the Catalog, they didn’t appear as soon as I opened the Catalog on my new system.
Any clarification or light shedding would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Steve

Andrew,
I would agree, this implementation appears to be a retrofit and not properly
thought out. The subject is very confusing and has caused me many hours of
frustration while migrating several LR environments to new systems. Most
importantly, there is now a reply and reference to my question that helps
clear up the confusion. I have since changed my Preferences accordingly and
hope to avoid this trap in the future. Following is the URL that I found
most helpful.

I recently purchased a new computer which is running windows 8.1.  My old computer is running windows 7 with lightroom 5.7 on it.  I have installed the software for Lightroom 5.7.1 on my new computer.  How do I transfer or move my images, presets, and catalog from my old computer to the new one?  I need detailed instructions.

  • What am I doing wrong? - Presets and catalogs

I have three LR catalogs, all on the same computer. I have IPTC and Export presets but for some reason the catalogs don't share them, so I have to recreate the presets for each catalog, which is sort of annoying. My gut tells me there's a simple way to ensure that the same presets are used with all catalogs but I can't figure it out.
    thanks,
    jack

Check to see if one or more catalog's Prefs are set to store same in catalog. Then, of course, reverse those that are. I don't know if you will then have to move by hand the presets to the default location, but I suspect so.

I've been currently using a 2011 MBP with OS 10.7.5, using the "home" folder, which I will NOT be doing on the new one MBP with Mavericks.

  • Lost all presets and watermarks after catalog backup

I started having multiple issues with Lightroom 4 last night after I cleaned up my folders in the Finder. I already knew I would have to locate the missing/offline folders in Lightroom and when I linked them back up, a few images went way over-exposed on their own (They had already been completely edited and exported luckily.) I wasn't able to fix them because all of the history on those images went away when it happened and even when I removed it from the Library, they all re-imported with the over-exposure even though that's wasn't what the originals looked like.
My second issue happened after I backed up my catalog last night. The save presets box was checked but when I opened today, all of my user and purchased presets were gone and my watermarks were gone. It is like Lightroom went back to defaults except my images are all there with their history (except for the ones that I went over in the 1st paragraph.) I can re-add all of my purchased presets and watermarks but I don't know how to get my user presets back. And what did I do to cause all of this so I don't do it again?

The Songs - were they Bought from itunes? If not transfer purchases doesn't do anything. The songs would have to be on the library you sync'd with. The back up oesn't include Media (except photos taken with the ipad/iphone) and apps.

  • Lightroom 5 catalog. Retrieving user presets and plug-ins.

Got a new Macbook Pro, and all my data from my old Macbook is on my new hard-drive. I transferred my old Lightroom 5 catalog on my new Macbook and when I tried to open it, none of my User Presets nor Plug-ins such as; VSCO were there. How can I get these back? Thanks

Presets are found in your user Library folder. You'll need to open Finder, and click Go, then hold down the Option key to enable "Library" in the menu. Click Library, then follow the path:
    /users/yourname/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/
Within this folder, you'll find subfolders with all your presets and templates. Copying folder by folder is the best way to make sure you get everything you need. Make sure you keep the presets and templates within the exact same folders on the new machine.
Plugins are best migrated by re-installing.

  • Catalogs Files to Keep and Catalogs Files to Delete

How and where do I find and identify the latest working Lightroom Catalog (I think it is "Lightroom 3 Catalog-3.lrcat") and its associated files? And which of the old files in that folder can I delete?

For Windows (not sure about Mac), in LR go to Edt menu, Preferences... and in the general tab it tells you which is the default catalog.  Under Presets tab it tells you where you've stored presets (click "show Lightroom presets folder").
The Lightroom folder (where your catalog is, go to catalog settings, general tab, and click show) also has a Backups folder for weekly backups of the catalog - keep as many or as few as you like.  There are previews - no need to keep them, they're recreated if they're not there.  The Lightroom settings folder is also in the Lightroom folder (If you've selected "Store presets with catalog" in the presets tab above) which includes your own presets.  In each settings sub-folder are folders for Lightroom presets and your presets.

  • What is the purpose of the "Store Presets with Catalog" Checkbox?

I am running Lightroom 4.4 on Windows 7x64. I have heard that under preferences its better to uncheck the box that says "store presets with catalog" because it is better to have the presets not tied to and/or embedded in a specific catalog.
However, I noticed that whether the box is unchecked or checked, the presets are always stored in their own subfolder separate from the catalog. Specifically, if the box is checked the path is: "C: Drive"->Lightroom, if the box is unchecked the path is: "C: Drive"->Users->"username"->AppData->Roaming->Adobe->Lightroom. So the presets are not embedded in the catalog file in either case, they are just stored in subfolders in different places (albeit in one case it seems user specific and in another it seems global).
So what is the real point of the "store presets with catalog" checkbox?

Take a look at these pages for more info:

  • "Store Presets with Catalog" doesn't move existing presets

Is there a good reason why Lightroom does not offer to move current user presets when the "Store Presets with Catalog" is selected in Preferences>Presets?
If I have set up presets, templates etc. they are all gone without any warning as soon at this inocous little tick box is clicked.
    Using Lightroom 4.1
    Windows 7 64bit
    RzB

Yes, the behavior is frustrating, goofy and not intuitive. It is alarming to see your user presets appear and disappear when you toggle the option check box on and off.
Not sure if Symbolic links are an option on Windows or not, but I use them on the Mac (instead of the breakable Aliases) along with DropBox. This way you I sync up multiple machines with my precious presets and other user created documents. This solves the problem of syncing DNG and Lens profiles which should but don’t live with the presets. Adobe should fill the preset folder with virtually every user configurable item like DNG profiles and Lens profiles and give us a way to easily keep them in sync.
I only use one catalog. So I have the Store Presets with Catalog on and clone the one drive among others to use with different machines. Symbolic Links take care of the other files but I wish I didn’t have to resort to this approach.

  • Store presets in catalog.

I like to store presets with the catalog.  But then the only presets available to all  catalogs are the ones Adobe has provided.  Is there a way to create a “global” preset that will be available in all catalogs when one selects store presets in catalog in the preferences?

  • Xjb binding file and catalog file

I have two schemas that exist in separate projects.
I utilize a catalog file to correctly take the namespace of a schema and refer to the specific location of the other schema. Long term the externalized schema will exist in a jar file.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

The problem is that the xjb file does not appear to use the same catalog file for resolving the schemaLocation attribute. Is there a way to apply the catalog to the schemaLocation attribute of the binding element? In the xjc command, I supply a catalog file and it correctly integrates this into the build process.

  • LR should backup (User) Presets when Catalog is backed-up

I discovered that LR does not backup the Presets (including User Presets) when the Catalog is backed-up. This is the case even when "Store Presets with Catalog" is checked in Preferences > Presets Tab. There seems to be no way to back-up the Presets from within LR.
It would be good if the Presets were included in the Catalog backup - at least when the "Store Presets with Catalog" has been checked.

    Agreed.
And, not only should the backup include all data, it should be accompanied by a restore that can restore it all...

  • What are the best sequence presets and settings to use in FCE for the best resolution with the least amount on strain on computer?

    Hello!
Can someone please help me figure out the best settings to use in order to obtain the best resolution in FCE4 for a television show that is going to be sent out on full size Sony DVcam tapes, with 4:3 aspect ration and audio output at 48kHz? I am currently working with mixed media sources in Final Cut Express, and I am wondering what the best settings (presets and preferences) are, in order to provide the HIGHEST resolution possible, while putting the least amount of strain on my computer system?
I am importing mini DV-standard definition footage and still photos (from Canon Rebel camera, HD CMOS Canon camcorder that records in 1440x1080 at 48 kHz, and cell phone photos). For voiceovers I use the tools in FCE.
I use Voltaic (which I use thanks to recommendations from Apple discussion boards, love it!)  to convert the footage from the HD CMOS-Canon HD VIXIA (HG 20) camera, and then I am using print to video to output onto Sony DVcam tapes (full size). This is for delivery for a television network that broadcasts in Standard Definition, so I need to produce the highest resolution and best quality possible that also puts the least amount of stress on my computer system.
If anyone has any recommendations, help, or sources that can help me answer this question I would be greatly appreciative.
    Thank you!
    Susan Kayne

This is happening because your video clip properties do not match your sequence settings.  This is always a problem when you try to insert video from multiple camcorders/cameras (that use different video codecs, frame sizes & rates) in a single sequence.
It will help a lot if you provide more specifics - what FCE easy setup did you use to create your sequence?  For your DV footage, are you using standard 4:3 DV or anamorphic 16:9 DV clips?
If you plan to export to standard def (DV/DVCAM) and are mixing DV from a miniDV camcorder, stills, cell phone images and AVCHD then I would suggest that you use the DV NTSC easy setup for your sequence.  Use MPEG Streamclip or similar utility to convert your non-DV video (your AVCHD video) to QuickTime/Apple DV-DVCPRO NTSC.   Then all your video will match your sequence settings.  Yes, you will have to crop the AVCHD footage to 4:3 and you can do that in MPEG Streamclip.

  • PS CC slow down after imported preferences/preset.

    Hello!
Since I have imported all the preferences/preset from PS CS6 to PS CC, when I open Photoshop CC - on reading preferences - the program stops for about a minute.
The only think I can suppose is about actions. I have a lot of actions loaded. I have some styles (not many) and a custom workspace. Nothing other for now.
I have not yet installed any plugins, OnOne, AutoFX, AlienSkin, Nik or Topaz.
How do you solve  with the actions?
I work with a lot of action in photo's elaboration and since (with the 64-bit system) ActionDex no longer worked, I found myself having to load many actions.
How could I solve the problem?
Thanks for any help and sorry for my bad English.
    lio
PS One more question.... Ihave to reinstall all my plugin like AutoFX, OnOne, Nik Software, Topaz, and so on, to have them in CC?
But, doing so, these programs take up double space. Or am I in error?

I would try updating the video driver directly from the manufacturer's website:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2012/07/photoshop-basic-troubleshooting-steps-to-fix-mos t-issues.html#UpdateDriver
The other thing I'd do is go to Prefences>Performance... click on [Advanced Settings...], Choose "Basic" for drawing mode and restart Photoshop.
