LR sharpening in both Develop and Print?

LR has sharpending in both Develop and Print modules. What recommendations to people have for setting them? Do the different sliders effect different parts of the image? Any insights?
Obviously the type of camera, file format and output size all have an impact. I shoot RAW with the a D200.
Thanks!
Reid

Jeff,
Thanks for the clarification and link to Bruce's article. I'm acquainted with the 3 pass approach and am trying to use LR as much as I can without ducking in and out of other applications.
I've heard that LR is good for output of small prints, but for anything intented for the wall, I would be better served by PS or Qimage.
I look forward to LR improving sharpening so that for images that don't need localized adjustments, I can stay in LR. (Did Mark ever give you a commitment for localized adjustments in LR 2.0? I'll have to listen to Podcast #29)
I've always considered sharpening one of the most important parts of the workflow. I'll be taking Mac and John's workshop at the end of June, so I'll get their additonal insight on sharpening.

  • What is the best way to sharpen using both Lightroom_4 and Photoshop CS6?

I want to learn the best way to sharpen various subjects.  I have Martin Evening's latest Lightroom 4 and Photoshop CS6 books, but no mention of which methods are better,  or better for which subjects/conditions.  It seems that Camera Raw and Lightroom are the same, so I'm tempted to just do it all in Lightroom with the Develop module Detail panel, and the adjustment brush for local sharpening. But can I be doing more with Photoshop CS6, or Lightroom and Photoshop together?

Lightroom and Photoshop have different capabilities.  Photoshop power lies in layers so sharpening in Photoshop is best done using a sharpening layer which can be blended and masked into layers below.  Lightroom is more a image developer then and editor and does not have layer support.  Both Lightroom and Photoshop use Adobe RAW conversion engine to develop images.  Adobe RAW Conversion Engine has very good sharpening and noise reduction capabilities. Sharpening and Noise reduction is more or less a balancing act to much sharpening enhances noise to much noise reducing loose details and add softness.  Though both Photoshop and Lightroom use the same Adobe RAW conversion engine they use different user interfaces when they use Adobe RAW conversion engine.  Lightroom also lacks Layer support.

  • After 3.6.8 upgrade both preview and print only prints about a quarter of page in WindowsXP.

Both Preview Print and actual printing shows the page will be about one quarter of the information on the page. If I use I.E.6 the same page prints full document, as previous version of Firefox 3.6.2 I was running did. Page Setup information does not seem different.
The printed data is in the upper left hand side quarter of the 8.5x11 sized paper. HP LaserJet 2100 printer is the output device. I can use Thunderbird on the system and print an email to the same printer and it prints as expected, uses full page for printout as Preview also renders.

    Hi,
First, install the Critical Update below:
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL41827/mp-101648-1/HP_Scan_for_Mac_OS_X_10.7_Update.dmg
Now change the device settings as following:
    1. Open the HP Utility and select your device.
    2. From Scan Settings open the "Scan to Computer".
    3. Click the "Scan Tasks" tab.
    4. Select the Scan Shortcut used to scan, then click Edit.
    5. In the section of Scan from an HP Device click on the blue triangle to enlarge the menu.
    6. From the enlarged menu now open the drop-down menu next to Crop To and set as None.
    7. Click OK and try scanning.

  • Envy5532 - both PC and printer connect to WiFi router/network, but can't print from PC : (

I have a new Envy 5532 and I want to print from my Windows 7 Pro PC via my wireless network/internet router.
The PC is connected wirelessly to the internet through the router. The printer connects to the router/network without any problem. The printer also connects DIRECTLY to the PC wirelessly, and I can print from the PC if I disconnect from the router/WiFi network.
So the router comes up as a network on the PC, and the printer comes up as a different network. But I can only print through the direct connection, which means I can only print, not scan. Also, it means I have to disconnect from the internet in order to print.
I have run all diagnostics, installed the drivers, etc. but it seems to be a dead end.
    Any advise? Many thanks.

    Hi @DrivenDementet,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see that you cannot print from your PC to your HP Envy 5532. I am happy to help you with your printing!
    Please see the following guides:
'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Does Not Print: Windows 7. (This guide will help you get online and printing).
Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection. (This guide will help you maintain the connection).
On top of the guides, I would also recommend this website, HP Wireless Printing Center, as there is some good information on wireless printing.
it is also very important with wireless printing that the PC and the Printer are on the same wireless network, otherwise they will not be able to talk to each other.
Hope this information clears things up for you, and have a great day!

  • LR 3 beta-Beef up develop and print modules

Time is costly and we really need some Photoshop retouching tools where LR is very weak. The CS4 clone tool with opacity adjustment, patch tool, and healing brushes are better  than the circular clone tool in LR which cannot deal with irregular shapes. For whatever reason, the LR clone/heal tool slows up LR where it almost freezes when a lot of dust needs to be dealt with whereas CS4 spot healing brush copes well. The curves feature needs to be made more sensitive with points added.
I have not seen the ability to rename files in the develop mode to avoid having to transfer back to the Library module to rename. Also it would be better when making changes to an image in stages, particularly if the image has been sent to Photoshop a few times,if each variation could be clearly marked automatically in the film strip tool bar in the sequence the changes took place. The edit tags currently used get a bit confusing (although renaming the file with a description of the editing carried out does help)
Sharpening is a bit better but a texture enhancer for say clothing or in landscapes- rocks and stone like in third party plugins would be beneficial. The problem is that the masking slider is good at eliminating oversharpening but smoothes out texture too much.
In the Library and develop modules there is no file size or picture dimension information. When exporting from LR,there should be a targeted file size in MB which is required by some users.
Full support for Video files need to be added to process the latest SLR  technology.
In the Print module, the abilty to position text with title to the left instead of centred should be possible.Sometimes text might be set out in say ,two or three paragraphs as explanation of the picture without text being centered. This is very difficult to achieve at present. An international copyright symbol (not available on keyboard) should be added as a prefix option for use with the Identity plate (adjustable with the size and opacity slider) to prefix the photographer's name and date.
There appears to be no ability to print to the edge of the paper even at zoom to fill.

  • Option to allow filmstrip to work the same in both develop and library mode

First of all, let me say that one of the greatest features that LR2 brings to the table it the keyboard shortcuts for adjusting things in develop mode. That is the single improvement that has really made a HUGE difference in editing images the way I work.
I'm so happy to be able to get almost everything on the keyboard, that I wanted to point this out.
When in library mode, I can select a series of images in a row using shift + an arrow key. When I'm done adjusting the images, I can press the right arrow key, and I've now effectively deselected all the previous images, and gone on to the next one. This is intuitive and makes sense to me.
But in Develop mode, pressing the right arrow key swings me back around to the first image on the left.
Perhaps for the way some people works, this makes a lot of sense. For me, there's no reason that I would need to do this.
Of course I can deselect all photos (apple-D), but then to get back on track, I have to go to the mouse to select the next image. I would like the option of having the filmstrip act the same way in both modes.
Another solution would be to continue to allow the "Select only active photo" shortcut that is available in Library mode, but for some reason is not available in Develop mode.
Yes, this is a small change, but I feel like things are getting so close to perfect that I wanted to chime in with something that in the end I think will really help to speed up people who have to work through and adjust a large number of images.

    Hi,
If the songs were purchased from itunes, I suggest that you delete the tracks from your itunes library and move to trash (providing you live in a country that permits redownloading). See http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12283.

  • Workflow Lightroom 5: Developing and printing using two computers

Hi,  I use Lightroom 5 on my mac to catalog and process my images.  My printer, however, is stored offsite. It is a Canon Pixma 100 airprinter and I also have a pc at that location. My question is this: is it possible to set a print on a mac, then transfer it to a thumb drive, and insert the thumb drive in the pc at the other location in order to print?  Do I need to have Lightroom on the pc as well, or can I just use the Canon software and not lose printing functionality (templates, paper choice, etc).  Would Lightroom Mobile work here? Any assistance greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance.

You're allowed two installs. They can't be used simultaneously.
Probably the easiest way to share a catalogue between them is to put it and your images on an external hard drive. Plug it into the machine you're using. If you can use USB3 or eSATA or FireWire, you'll get better performance than with USB2.

  • Dunning email and print both at a time

    Hi all,
My client need to send Dunning document as email to the customer, at the same time they want to generate
printout also for the same. I have successfully send an email to customer email address.
But i am unable to generate print out for the same.
They need to generate email and print out out for the dunning..
My question is: can we generate both email and print out at the same time for the single run of F150 for one customer.
If it is possible please let me know how can we do it.
    Thanks,

    No,
I have by pass the dunning doc to generate the email instead of printing using BTE concept.
but my client need to print and email both at time at the time transaction F150 triggering.
Hope there is no way to change dunning standard print program to create in SAP. since it wont take any customer program to print
      dunning documnets..
So, is there any way to get the print and email for the same dunning document.
    Thanks,

  • Preview and print does not match image in LR

I tweaked an image in Develop and printed some 5x7s until I got it right and then went to 13x19 (first time ever using that size with my R3000). The print preview and the print  were way too red. I went back to a 5x7 and it was way red as well in print preview, so I didn't print. I replaced a light magenta cart that I think ran out during the 13x19 print, and then some others that were low, and did a nozzle check and that was okay. I have spent hours looking around all of the settings (sRGB) and can find nothing that would explain what changed between my last good 5x7 print and the red 13x19. I went back to earlier versions and had the same problem. Monitor is due for recalibration, but that probably has nothing to do with it since it changed so suddenly. Any ideas of what to do?  R3000, LR 4.3, Win 7, NEC PA 271w, beginner level

A print that is too red / magenta is an indication for double color management, i.e. by Lr and by the printer.
Color management must be done only by one: either by the application (Lr or Photoshop) or by the printer but never by both.
When you select a printing profile in Lr that means that now Lr is doing the color management. Consequently you have to switch off colo rmanagement in the printer dialog (printer driver).
    See screen shot:
Or, you can do it the other way round: Let the printer do the color management and select <Managed by Printer> in Lr.

  • Color profiles for web and print

    Hi,
I am editing photos from my DSLR. They were shot as jpg in Adobe RGB. I am editing photos for both web and print at the moment and was wondering if there is a way to do that so that I would be able to edit for both simultaneously in the Photoshop process.
Here are the details for what I normally do:
For print, I would work photos over in AdobeRGB while the Proofing option is set to Working CMYK (usually SWOP, depending on what printer I use). Then I'd flatten the artwork, resize and sharpen, and change the color mode to CMYK, save as TIFF.
For web, I usually edit while RGB Color Settings are set to sRGB IEC61966-2.1, and Proofing is set to Monitor RGB. I flatten, resize and sharpen, and Save for Web.
Is there any way I can edit a single photo (shot in Adobe RGB) so that they can be used for BOTH print and web? I know CMYK vs. RGB would mean that they would end up looking different in the end, but is there any way I can have a single Photoshop file for a photo and go through the necessary steps to make it ready for print and for web... or is it that due to color profiles and proofing options, there's nothing I can do but to edit each photo twice?
Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help.

    karoleend wrote:
Thanks for the advice. I'll try that out.
I posted my second question before I read your response, but yes, it does seem the best choice to convert to sRGB when Saving for Web. And you say you place your .psd file into an InDesign document? Do you do that if you only wish to save as a pdf... what do you personally do when saving as TIFF for print?
I don't save Tiffs for print. I use PSDs. I don't ever give ID files with all linked files to the printer only PDFs. If i'm working on something like a coffee table book I would do the conversion in Photoshop. but most magazines and newspapers, CD covers, posters, brochures everything stays aRGB until I make the PDF.

  • Development and Production Requirements for a Forms/Report application

    Dear all,
We have an application witch run in client/Server mode using Forms/Reports 6i For 300 users. We want to migrate it on Forms/Reports 9I using Oracle 9IAS and Oracle 9IDB.
I would like to have advises about material requirements of both development and production environment((developer deskop, development appServer and databaseServer, end user desktop, production databaseServer and production AppServer).
Thank u for giving more details about my request.

I have my dev and production on 2 different databases/instances, and the workspaces have a different name aswell (think 'dev' and 'prod').
I do reuse my application ids, which makes the whole process a lot more manageable: easier for me to identify and replacing a whole application.
However, when i want to replace only 1 page, apex stumbles over the workspace. Bummer.
So i took an export of a page on both workspaces, and opened the files.
    prompt  Set Credentials...
    begin
-- Assumes you are running the script connected to SQL*Plus as the Oracle user APEX_040100 or as the owner (parsing schema) of the application.
      wwv_flow_api.set_security_group_id(p_security_group_id=>nvl(wwv_flow_application_install.get_workspace_id,1377027056414870));
    end;
    wwv_flow_application_install.get_workspace_id,1377027056414870));
I took both workspace IDs and keep them in a simple txt in my installation-files folder. Each time i need to import a page from dev->prod i go in the exported file from dev and change the workspace id to the id of my production workspace id. Everything works magically after that.
If your application ids also differ, you can try changing the id in the exported file aswell, but i can't tell if it works or not since i've not done that yet.
    prompt  Set Application ID...
    begin
       -- SET APPLICATION ID
       wwv_flow.g_flow_id := nvl(wwv_flow_application_install.get_application_id,130);
       wwv_flow_api.g_id_offset := nvl(wwv_flow_application_install.get_offset,0);
    null;
    end;where of course you'd change around nvl(wwv_flow_application_install.get_application_id,130);

  • Open and print multiple files from the Finder all at once.

I'm trying to research how to do this. In OS9 you used to be able to hi-lite multiple files (Word files for example) and just hit Command+P. This would automatically open all of the files AND print them.
I can't seem to do this in my OS X. Or can I? I can hi-lite and go to File/Print, but the computer is only opening but not printing.
    Any suggestions??
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't know how to both "open and print" multiple files in one step. The ⌘O combination of course will open multiple items. The items remain selected so switching back to the "Finder" and dragging multiple icons onto the icon for "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Printer Setup Utility.app" seems to cause them all to be printed to the default printer.
Alternatively, a user's "~/Library/Printers" folder contains printer icons -- I'm not sure what they are exactly, but they represent the printers set up for that account. They function pretty much like the pre-OS X "Desktop Printer" icons so dragging and dropping multiple files onto them should cause them to be printed. It may even be possible to create aliases to them on the "Desktop" to recreate "Desktop Printer" functionality. But again, this won't open the files into their applications.

  • Best Procedure for Creating Web and Print Images

Windows XP SP2, Adobe CS3 Design Premium
    Hello,
I have created a book in InDesign and have placed the art from Illustrator into the pages and cover of the book. At the time the book was designed, I gave no thought to the need for having the cover and certain pages also available on the web. (Silly me...)
Is there any way to duplicate the native illustrator files and make them web safe (with the web safe colors) without having to create new swatches and use live paint to recolor the image?
Is there a standard procedure for designing images in Illustrator when you know you will be needing both web and print output? (I'd like to do it 'right' next time.)
Thank you so much for your help.

    Hi
if you want to create the web service using the function module do the following steps.
the main requirement for creting the web service using the function module is the function should be RFC enabled.
    1. To create web service of this Function Module
Go to Utilities ->More utilities->create a web service->from function module
    2. A new wizard will be open to create the web service and click on continue.
    3. Enter the web service name (any name that you want to give) and give the short description, select the Endpoint type as Fuinction Module and click on continue.
    4. Select the Function Module name that you are using.
    5. select the profile as Basic Authentication: SOAP Pro.
    6. Press continue to release the web service. The web service is now created
To check the web service Go to the transaction WSADMIN and select the node
SOAP Application for RFC-Complaint FMs and expand the node and select your web service that you have created and expand the web service node up to the last .
Now to test the web service select the last node and click on the web service home page button and it will open the home page.
from this page u will get the wsdl file as well as you can testthe web service.
    Thanks
