LR2.3:  Question on Import from Disk / DNG conversion

Hi... I notice that when choosing FILE/ Import photos from disk" There are 4 choices under file handling
1. Add photos to catalog without moving.
2. Copy photos to new location and add to catalog.
3. Move photos to a new location and add to catalog.
4. Copy photos a Digital Negative (DNG) and add to catalog.
My RAW files are already on an external hard drive and organized in labeled folders so I wish to "Add photos to catalog without moving"... but I ALSO want to convert these RAW images to DNG files on import. What do I choose to apply the "add the photos to catalog without moving" AND at the same time convert those files from RAW to DNG files on import?
Will this add the newly created and imported DNG files into the existing folders alongside the original source RAW files?
Under import preferences / Import DNG creation, Is it best to leave the Compressed (Lossless) option checked or unchecked?
What's best for preview creation? Minimal or 1:1. I will not be working on many images at once so speed is less valuable than disk space.

Bennett, this is how I do it. Choose File/import from disk. Select raw images to import. Select last option, "Copy photos as DNG & add to catalog." Under "copy to", click down arrow, and browse to the folder containing original files. In the "Organize" window, select "into one folder" if you want them to be in the same folder as originals. Select "by original folders" if you want LR to put it in a sub-folder that it will name. Leave Compressed (Lossless) checked. There is also an option to re-name the files if you prefer. As for previews, Minimal will import much quicker, but LR will build larger previews later. I have tried it both this way, and importing as 1:1. I do not see much difference in working with files that were imported as 1:1 or minimal. LR seems to take about the same time to stop "working" on it before I can.

  • Question about importing from mac mail to folder in address book

Is it possible to place imported email addresses (Mac email) into specific folder(s) in Address Book rather than into just the All Folder.? For example, I have several business addresses that I want to import from Mac Mail automatically into my Business Folder and several others that I want to go into Friends Folder. Can this be done? If so how? Thanks

The Address Book database is similar to the iTunes database and iPhoto database.
If you use iTunes then you know you can't place a song in a playlist without the song being in the primary iTunes database first and the same with iPhoto. You can't place a photo in an album with the photo being in the main iPhoto library first.
The same with Address Book. You can't place a contact in an Address Book group without the contract being in the primary Address Book "All" Group and I'm not aware of a way to place a contact in the primary All group and in a designated group at the same time.

  • IPhoto 4.0.3 crashes on import from disk or camera

Whenever I try to import photos from my Canon camera or from a disk folder, the iPhoto program crashes. No files are imported. This means I can no longer add photos to my iPhoto library.
Can anyone suggest how I can recover from this problem?
I am running a single iPhoto library with about 5500 images in it.
    I am using iPhoto 4.0.3 (4H2).

    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Accounts.
    2. If some settings are dimmed, click the lock icon and type an administrator name and password.
    3. Select the user account you want to delete, then click Delete .
    4. Click OK to save the user's files on the computer, or click Delete Immediately to remove the user account and all the user's files.
Notice in step 4 that you are given the option to save the user's files on the computer. The files from the old user are saved in the admin account used to delete the other account, and those files outside the user account are already available to all users. What other files do you need to transfer?

  • Import from disk still has a problem in1.3.1

I still have a problem importing more than one file at a time from a CD or DVD. I must first transfer all images I want to import to HD, than they will import fine. Running XP SP2. If one file on a disk is selected, it will import fine. If two or more are selected, I get an error message saying "Files can not be read."

I stopped running Airport Disk Agent because of my perception that it was causing Safari to crash sporadically on my machine; since turning it off, Safari has not crashed at all.
However, it is quite possible to connect to AEBSn drive without it:
Finder-->Go-->Network-->"Your Base Staiton Name"-->Connect (to available shares, among which your AEBSn-connected drive should be listed).
I have the drive on my desktop right now having used this approach, and aside from the generally acknowledged marginal (~2.0 MB/sec) performance of AEBSn-USB connected network drives everyting is fine.
(I have a simple network wherein the AEBSn is the only router downstream of a cable modem with Macs and peecee's connected wirelessly and a TiVo, a printer, and a 10/100 switch connected to the LAN ports.)

  • Re: LR 2.1  LR freezes upon attempt to import from disk

    System: Win XP SP3
Don't recall the order I did this in and don't know what might be relevant, but I upgraded to LR 2.1 from 2, from Beta 2, finally got the courage to uninstall LR 1.4, and used Uniblue Registry Cleaner to hopefully improve that aspect. Now LR freezes after I select 'import' a photo or 'import all photos in selected folder'. (Just when I threw caution to the wind.) So, is reinstalling LR2 the only solution? Thanks for any help. Anne

Boy, I quit messing with registry cleaners a LONG time ago, after seeing so many systems get hosed even worse.
What did you hope to accomplish by running it?
    I'd probably just re-install LR2.
BTW, The registry tends to suck as a piece of technology, but then again it is quite possible for it to be filled with leftover, dead entries that cause no harm to the system at all. It's just text.

  • 1.3 import from disk problem

I have loaded LR 1.3 update, and now I can not import (with "Import photos at their current location" import option) more than one file from a DVD at a time. I am running Windows XP. If I click on one file, it will import fine. Click on two or more, and I get an error message saying "The following files were no imported because they could not be read." If I copy them to hard drive, they will import all at once, just fine. I tried to "copy photos to a new location and import" also. The files copy fine, but I get the same error message when it tries to import them.

Sorry, John. Not meaning to shout, just making a point. The DVD file copy is always read only, because you can not change it on the disk. When it is copied onto hard drive, it is no longer read only. But this is not the problem. In the past, in 1.1, or 1.2, I did not have this problem. I never had to copy files to hard drive, before importing into LR. from a DVD. And, as I said, if I import one file, it works fine. Do two or more at once, as I have always done from day one of using LR, and it will not read them.

  • In Lr4 how do I import from disk?

I have been using Lr4 trial and decided to purchase a hard copy of the software. Having installed Lr4 from the DVD I created a new catalog and imported my 2012 images. However it did not import the edited versions of the RAW files saved as JPEGs. Try as I may I can find no way of importing these edited copies to my catalog. There must be away as in  Lr2 I could search my files and Ctr+click on images to import. This is beginning to drive me nuts as I try in vain to find a way around this problem. So any help in resolving this issue will be very gratefully received.

    Hi Rikk
I tried that several times and it still would not pickup the edited images. However in desperation I unistalled/reinstalled Lr4 checked the box again and with fingerd crossed reimported my files and wonder of wonders it picked up all the edited RAW files, at last. I can only assume that there must have been a glitch during the original install process but with luck the problem has now gone for good.  Thanks for your input.

  • Keywords/Tags not shown during import from disk

I am trying to populate my LR3 libray with all the photos on my HD by importing them. Many have been tagged from Elements 8. I have found that when first rendering the photos in the Library, the keywards and tag icon are not shown prior to actually hitting the Import button and adding them to LR3. It looks like I can type new kewords and have them attached using Add on Import, but it would be much more useful in my workflow to have the keywords that already exist be shown so I know what to add or change. Is there any way around this?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Your best option is to upgrade the PSE8 catalog to a Lightroom 3 catalog.

  • Importing from dvd disk

I am very new to imovie and am trying to import my home videos from a disk. I have a sony camcorder that finalizes disks so you can view them on dvd players. I have no problem watching the disk on my computer, but when I try to import, a screen pops up saying that it is doing something to the unusable files, stops, then nothng is imported. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I not able to import from disks? Funny thing is I have no way of connecting the camera to the computer....no usb ports or fire wire port on the camera. HELP!

.. I have a sony camcorder that finalizes disks so you can view them on dvd players...
iM supports only import from miniDV, not these point-shot-play-DVDcorders-devices..
    Import from DVD:
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
non of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Is there an easy way to use MOVE when importing from card reader?

In Lightroom 1, I would hit File -> Import From Disk which would allow me to move photos from my card reader to the hard drive.
In Lightroom 3, the only option is the normal import dialog and in order to get the "Move" option I have to select "other source" and then scroll down the list to select the card reader in order to get the "Move" option.  It's a pain to do it every time.  (not to mention my wife will never do it and just use "copy").
So my question is, "Is there a way to get the Move option to be available by default on my card reader?"
It's been my workflow since 2004 to have the images deleted directly after I copy them off the memory card using Adobe software (Photoshop Album 2.0, Photoshop Elements 4, Lightroom 1.0).  I'm really hoping there is an easy way to accomplish this in Lightroom 3. Otherwise I will be pretty disappointed.

    brianbjork wrote:
The reason I like the move command so much is that I know when photos are on my memory cards that the are not on my computer.
LR defaults to not importing suspected duplicates.  so if there are still files on the card, they will be grayed out. That's how you can know.

What do you all use in your work flow to delete the pictures left on your memory cards after they are copied?
I have a shell file that removes the files from the card and ejects the disk.  I keep it in my dock for easy access.
Others will tell yiou, though, to format in camera. Which is a good idea! I just like to keep my cards empty and ready.

  • Import from device

I am no longer able to import directly from a flash card. Under File "import from device" is grayed out. The flash card must be copied to desktop and then I can import from disk. The card reader is read by adobe bridge but not lightroom How do I fix this problem?

This was reported a little while back. Search the forum. One poster found a solution through a registry change. Didn't work for me but it might work for you.
What does work for me is that my camera shows up as a device on the desktop and I can use "Import Photos From Disk" and this works just as well. Presumably your flash cards should show up as a device and this would work for you. Hope this helps.

  • Import from DVD problem gone in LR 2.0 beta

One problem I have had with LR 1.3 was not being able to File>Import from disk, and select more than one file from a DVD or CD and import. It would see them as read only files. I had to open another window, and drag them into Library.
This glitch is GONE in 2.0 beta. THANKS Adobe.

  • LR and DNG conversions from NEF

Just received a batch of Nefs and corresponding dng conversions from a client. I immediately noticed that there was a serious white balance difference between these pairs--LR shows the Nefs at 5600 and the dngs at 7100. Is this typical. I have worked with dngs a few times, but this is the first set of images that I have seen with side by side conversions. Is this typical? Neither the dngs or nefs have been previously edited. I don't normally work with dngs--only when a customer insists.
Very curious about this WB difference. Any explanations from the color gurus here? TIA

I was aware that the numbers were relative and would likely be different, but in this case the images are visibly very different--I just gave the numbers to indicate what LR saw them as. When the difference is between 5600 (NEF) and 7100 (dng) one sees a big difference between the cool NEF and the warm dng on the screen. This difference is seen systematically in a batch of about 75 images. LR shows no metadata differences except the WB reading. Could this have resulted from a dng conversion in an older dng converter?

  • Plans to enable import of Cinema DNG (RAW) files from the Blackmagic POCKET Cinema Camera

Are there plans to enable import of Cinema DNG (RAW) files from the Black Magic POCKET Cinema Camera into Adobe Premiere Pro CS6?

There won't be any new features introduced in CS6, only some bug fixes if ever. All new features go into CC. Rumour has it that Camera RAW will be added into PrPro (sooner or later).
Off topic question: have you tried to convert BMPCC CinemaDNG files into DNG via Adobe DNG Converter? Resulting files are about 15% larger, so I hope that is what constitutes uncompressing them and making possible to import into PrPro CC natively (I'm not on CC, hence can't test, but I'm curious).

  • LR2 File naming on import problem, date and time not from photo

    Hi all,
I think I've run into a bug or inconsistency regarding the file naming in LR2. All my photos are named after the template YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS-XXXX.dng, where XXXX is the original file ID number and the rest is the capture date and time. This has worked excellently in 1.1 through 1.4.1.
In LR2 this template, on import, doesn't use the capture time from the photo for naming but rather the _current_ time when the import happens. In the template editor you don't get to choose what time to apply, as the fields are simply called "Minute", "Second", etc.
If I, however, use the function Library > Rename photos... on the new batch of photos after import, and apply the exact same template, they are correctly renamed to match their capture date.
This is with LR 2.0 on Mac OS X 10.5.4 on PowerPC. Anyone else see the same thing?

    This is a reported bug.
