LR2.5 on OS X 10.6.1 Hangs on Boot

I don't know why this started happening and as far as I remember, I didn't change anything (but I've done support long enough to know that usually turns out to not be the case).  Whenever I start LR2.5 on my Macbook Pro (3,1 generation) running OS X 10.6.1, LR asks me if I want to backup my catalog.  If I answer anything or even just wait too long to respond, LR hangs.  This happens in 64 bit mode and also in 32 bit mode.  What can I do to get LR back?
Thanks,
Sig.

Hmm... I can successfully launch LR2.5 when I log in as a new user.  I guess this points to it being a a config or a database issue.  Since I deleted the preferences files referred to in your first message, I assumed it was a db issue, so I moved ~/Pictures/Lightroom out of the way and tried starting it as my user, but again, it hangs on startup.  Maybe there's another preferences file I need to remove?  Something else to try?

  • PS4 rendering very "hot" compared to Bridge and LR2- HELP I am stuck

Have done all kinds of tests and still get a difference nearly equal to setting the vibrance to +50 and the saturation to +6 in LR2 to somewhat equal the look of the imported image in PS2.
    Here are the facts:
    I have used Bridge to convert the NEFs  into DNGs using Camera Standard for the D700 with no other changes;
Lightroom 2 and Bridge give the same rederings  in terms of colors and relationships of color to each other.  PS4 however, adds lots of yelow, brightens reds and blows highlights.  I have opened the file three ways in PS4, three attempts through Bridge with Save and convert, another time with Save and option click, another time with Open.  All three methods look equally bad.  I have opened the file directly through PS4, not using Bridge.  Just as bad.
Now here is the interesting part:  when I take spot readings for the image in Bridge and the image in PS4, I get the same numbers.
    For example:  R,G,B for Bridge:  232,205,162   PS4:  232,205,163.
    Should look the same, right?
PS4 Color Settings: Prophoto RGB, Gray gamma 2.2,Dot gain 10%,Convert to working profile, ask for mismatch, Engine: Adobe ACE, all other options not checked.
If I desturate monitor colors by about 15% the image looks closer to Bridge and LR2, but is still more yellow. This is not a good solution for printing reasons, however.
PS4 version 11.0.1     Mac OS/X version: 10.5.8  (not using the latest which is SnowLeopard.)
I have sent the query to Adobe Support, but suspect they'll tell me I don't have support and then there is a time lag, also.
Camera Raw: 5.5.097, PS4 11.01,  LR2: 2.5 with Camera Raw 5.5 in the dialog box
WHAT VARIABLE HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED?

Yes, sorry, you did mention that the Zoom has replaced the Netgear. Regardless, if the Zoom is providing the NAT & DHCP services ... which I would assume that it is by default, the AEBSn should be reconfigured as a bridge.
With AEBSn still configured as a bridge, please try the following:
o Power-down the Zoom, AEBSn, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o While the equipment is powered-down, connect one of your computers directly to any available LAN port on the AEBSn using an Ethernet cable.
o Power-up the Zoom; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up (plug-into power) the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
o Power-up the computer connected by Ethernet.
The computer should now be able to gain Internet access. Please post back your results.

  • Bug in print module still not fixed in LR2.1RC

    MacPro 10.5.5 iPF9000 Canon driver 1.30
What I found out is that when going to Print Setup under Color Matching I can choose Vendor Matching and then I can choose CM off in the Driver. If I then hit Print One the print is correct.
If I go to Print under Color Matching I cannot choose Vendor Matching. Both selections are grayed out and Colorsync is shown as checked. Of course I cannot choose CM Off this way. After I have once gone into the Print and then go back to Print Setup I can no longer choose Vendor Matching and have the same grayed out dialog under Color Matching. And off course the print is not correct this way with the double profiling that is going along.
Also it should be noted that selecting the cancel button in the Print Settings dialog brings about this behavior were it defaults to using colorsync and the Color Matching options are grayed out.
Close and restart LR2 and then you can have the Color Matching option back so that you can select CM off in the printer driver. Just do not select Cancel.

These issues (Dark prints, wrong profile handling, color shift, ...) are persisting since 1.3.x!!!!
Only for some! I use LR1/2 for printing all the time, and its great. Near-perfect color matching, incredibly useful printer presets, great resizing, etc, etc. But I use V64 and Epson printers.
Have you reported your particular problem to Adobe Support?

  • Catalog hell since upgrading to LR3 from LR2. Please help.

Ever since I upgraded from LR2 to LR3 I've been in a hellish runaround with my catalog. Whenever I start up LR3 a dialog box pops up asking me to "Please upgrade the catalog file "Lightroom_Catalog (original)" for use with Lightroom 3." It then makes a new catalog file. The problem is that I'm asked this question every time I open LR3 and I haven't had time, until now, to research the problem and I now have 3 different catalogs. AND when I allow it to upgrade the file I'm now getting a pop up saying "LR couldn't update the format of its catalog file because the file appears to be damaged." As far as I'm concerned LR3 is what damaged it in the first place. What can I do? I have jobs coming up and I just need LR to work and I need access to my catalog of photos. PLEASE help!
Forever in your debt if you can help.
    Anita

How do you start Lightroom? Do you start via a Lightroom Icon or by double clicking on a catalog file within Windows Explorer or some other shortcut?
Keep in mind that when Lightroom 3 upgrades your catalog, the catalog is saved under a different name, usually the original name with a "-2" appended at the end of the name. Your original Lightroom 2 catalog remains untouched, so if you keep opening that version it will ask you if you want to upgrade it again or if you want to open the Lightroom 3 version.
Hope this shelds some light on your issue, otherwise please let us know so we can continue troubleshooting.

  • Can I delete LR2 after upgrading to LR4?

I just upgraded from LR2.7 to LR4.2.     LR2.7  is still on my computer....  The upgrade transferred my old presets OK. So, can I delete LR2.7 without any problems?
    Ed in Florida

Yes, you can uninstall older versions of LR. The LR upgrades (and updates) are complete programs - they don't need the older versions to run.
P.S. Even if you want to fall back to the old process version of LR 2.x, LR 4.x still does support them (menu settings -> process ->... or at "camera calibration" pane).

  • How do I move my library from LR2 to LR3 please?

I have both LR2 and 3.  I have images saved on both versions of Lightroom on the same Mac but I now wish to transfer all my images from LR2 to LR3.  I have LR2 backup files (Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat) up to a couple of days ago, can I use this and import in one fell swoop and if so how do I do it please?

LR 3 will upgrade a single catalog but if you have separate catalogs you will have to export the LR2 catalog first.

  • LR2: can't see the images I've edited in Photoshop

I'm working on a Mac Pro desktop.
I'm in the LR2 develop module. I right-click on an image to "edit in CS3". No problem, the image opens up in CS3. I work on the image, then save and close the image.
Here's the problem: After saving and closing the image, I go back to LR2, and the new edited image (saved as a tiff) is not visible in Lightroom! And no, it isn't "stacked" behind the original - it's just not visible - like it wasn't even there.
I know it's there because I can see the tiff file right there using the Mac Finder. Where did the image go and how do I get my saved edits to automatically be visible in LR2? Thanks.

Sounds like you are experiencing one of the issues described in this thread of over 200 messages:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5f883/217
Do you have any special characters in your folder name, e.g., ampersand, apostrophe? That will cause the TIF to be stored in the same directory but not imported into LR. You can Synchronize Folder to import the TIF file(s).

  • Problem with serial number Lr2 to Lr4 upgrading

Welcome. I have a problem in LR 4 I use Lr2 upgrade to L4. From time to time my PC lost the serial number of the program. I have to enter the new LR2 and LR4 number losing all presets. After reinstalling Windows 7 is still the problem exists. Is it possible to send me a new LR4 for installations already without error?

Your presets should not be lost even if you have to re-license LR4 with 2 serial numbers.  Something else must be resetting things on your computer.   Are you using System Restore?
Make a backup of your critical LR files elsewhere on your computer and if they are reset or lost, restore from that backup.
Your serial number Is stored in this file:
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Lightroom\Lightroom 4.0 Registration.lrreg
Your presets are stored, here or with your catalog:
    C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\[preset or template folder]\[preset or template filename.lrtemplate]
    Your preferences are stored here:
    C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences\Lightroom 4 Preferences.agprefs

  • My LR2 HD is dying and I need help!

    Hi,
Sorry for the very generic title. I searched but didn't find a solution. 2 Days ago, my HD where all my photos are on started making a clicking sound. I have noticed since then that it only happens when LR2 is running and I'm working on stuff, there's nothing else stored on that ext HD. I back up every time that I start LR2 to another external HD.
Searching around, it looks like the LR2 catalog is located on my iMac and not on the LR2 drive and folder where all the photos are. So my question is, what is the best way to use the back up to use that drive as the "new" LR2 catalog? I will be buying a new HD to use as a backup. Also, I had uploaded some vacation shots prior to noticing the hard drive clicking noise. I just noticed it after another trip recently, so should I backup from an earlier backup? and how would I do that? thanks.
    Richard

Remove the bad drive. Open LR. You should now see ? next to files and folders previously linked to the files on the bad drive. Right click on the highest level folder in LR. Select locate folder and find the corresponding folder on the back up drive. LR will now update the location of the files. This works if your folder structure is consistent between the old drive and the back up drive. If it isn't you may have to follow this procedure folder by folder or even worse file by file.
Back ups are best kept in the same structure as the originals for this very reason. It is also why it is best to use a very simple folder structure for your image files and manage stuff using LR rather than the OS's folder structure. In my case everything is imported into one folder called Originals by date. This is backed up to a separate drive at time of import. The originals are converted to DNG on import and the back ups also using a separate back up catalog. The backup is then itself backed up to an on line service.
By the way, if the failing drive is an external drive connected by usb, you can always remove it from the housing and try directly connecting it as an internal drive. Sometimes this will allow you to at least copy the files over...however once a drive starts clicking it is best to bin it I am afraid after saving what you can.

  • Moving photos off of my mac's hard drive & onto an external without affecting my imported LR2 pics

    HI! A little info first...
I am a photog so I have thousands of photos that i work with from my Mac's Internal Hard Drive.
First, I upload photos from my camera to the Pictures folder on my Mac.
Then, I upload the photos LR where I choose the ones I want to keep and edit. I, then, export my edited photos back to the original folder they were in.
I backup daily using Time Machine, so I am good there, but my HD is about completely full so I need to MOVE the folders of Pics OFF of my computer's HD.
I know that if I move the photos off of my HD and onto an external, all of my photos will in LR will be lost (broken links?).
    So, I have two questions...
How can I do this big move and still keep my LR folders in tact? Is this possible?
    and,
Should I start a new catalog to begin my new batch of incoming photos? I have so many folders in LR now, that I sometimes have a hard time finding the folder that I need.
    **I am using LR2
Thank you so much, in advance, for any help or suggestion!!!
    Heidi

    Hi Heidi!
       Okay, let's see...
i ADD photos to catalog without moving. and when i export...i export them back to their original folder.
So basically, you are elminating most of the functions of using LR in the first place.  So, let me explain a bit..
LR is designed to do a couple of things for your;  manage large collections of images, and edit images without destruction of the original image.
Let's take the last one first:  without destruction.   You are pointing LR at an original image (using the Add import).   You then use LR to do all the edits you like to it.  Then you Export back into the same directory, _overwriting_ your original.  This means that all of the history that LR keeps track of, such as your color edits, etc, gets wiped out.   That neatly negates LR's ability to do non-destructive editing.   Because you can't go back to your original, having overwritten it.
Do you have a reason why you shoot in jpg mode?  Or is it just because you haven't understood or tried raw mode?  The difference shooting in raw makes is quite dramatic in LR compared to shooting in jpg.  (And, it makes it almost impossible to overwrite the original!)  But that can come as a later refinement, if you wish.  Let's work on your current problem.
on the left side, under folders...i have about 200 folders from the last
year and i have about 60,000 photos total in my catalog. obviously, it
is getting hard for me to find folders when i need them even though i do
label each folder with the year/month/brief desciption (2010 december
    xmas)
I think we have a different description of how you create folders.  If you have 200 hundred folders, you are not doing what you claim;  year/month/... Becuase that would mean you have been taking photos for 200 years!
Here is what I meant by folder structures.  I keep all of my images in a sub-folder called MainCatalog.  That way, when I do backups, I only have to grab that one folder, and everything below it is backed up.
Top level is major project, it's the one farthest left, below my parent folder:
    MainCatalog
       family_farm
       rugby
       wedding
Under those catagories, each one has a year folder.
    MainCatalog
       family_farm
                2010
                2011
And each folder under the year has month
    MainCatalog
      family_farm
               2010
                     2010-01
                     2010-05
And each folder with month under it has the day,
    MainCatalog
      family_farm
              2010
                    2010-05
                             2010-05-03
                             2010-05-06
You could, for example, replace the bottom folder with a description appended to it.  You can see that this decreases the number of folders you have to scan to find what you are looking for;  by knowing the year and month, it's down to at most 31 folders.  This can be changed around; you could remove the top level project, and just use the rest of it, or move the project to the bottom... many ways of doing it.  One reason I chose this method is that LR will create all of the folders for me, I just create the top level major project folder.  Then in the import dialog, I point to the major project folder, and tell LR to import via the date format, and choose the year->year-mon->year-mon-day format.  Easy.
Now, as to moving your images to an external disk...
First, I would promote a parent folder.  This is done from within LR.  Bring up LR, and right-click on any of the folders you currently have, and select "promote parent folder".  This will have the effect of moving all of your folders into a sub-folder, and you'll now see the sub-folder at the very top in your list.  This is good.
And by finder, we meant the normal operating system's finder, not from within LR.  Some people move from within LR, some don't.  I find that if I use the operating system to move my files and later tell LR to reconnect them, I don't have problems with LR not being able to see the drive, as some people say they do.  Works both ways, but I obviously like my way better.
Now, as to moving your images... yep, it's easy, as someone else pointed out.  Just drag (move, not copy) and drop onto your new hard drive from your operating system.  Then when you bring up LR, you'll see '?' on the folder pane, saying LR doesn't know where these are anymore.  Right-click on the  top-level (parent) folder that you promoted, and browse to the new location and LR will connect them again.  The reason for doing the promote parent is that you only have to do this once; LR will connect all of the folders below it if they are in the same structure.
You don't need to upgrade to LR 3.3 if you don't need to yet;  I would recommend downloading Lr 2.7, however, as it fixed a few bugs in 2.6.  And it's a free upgrade.  With your current worfflow, there isn't a dramatic improvement in using 3.3.  The improvements are mostly for raw files, and many people have found that 3.3 is slower in regards to 2.6/2.7.
    Does that make sense now?
    Cheers!

  • BUG: standard Windows shortcut keys not working correctly in LR2

I've noticed two things in LR2 that used to work in LR1.4.1:
    - when using the Alt-Tab combination to cycle through all open applications, the chooser is in the
foreground but every time I press Alt-Tab again, somehow LR2 picks it up and acts as if I pressed
Tab. The effect is that while I'm switching to another app from LR2, LR2's window is flashing the
side panels off and on as I move through the list of other apps.
    - The Alt-Space combo no longer works at all. This is used to reach the system menu for an
application's window. Once there, you can close the app, minimize or maximize the window, etc. by
    keyboard instead of mouse.
    Does anyone else see these?
On the face of it, these are very small issues and much lower in priority than other issues I see in
other threads. The first one I mention is more amusing than a real problem. But the second one to me
is a real workflow problem (here I mean workflow as how I navigate through Windows, not my photo
processing workflow). It's so ingrained in me to manipulate Windows by quickly using that key combo
that when it doesn't work, it breaks my train of thought. Sort of like when you're engrossed in a
book and a piece of bad writing is jarring enough to remind you that you're reading a book. A lame
analogy maybe but hopefully you get the idea.
    (using LR 2 on WinXP w/ SP2)

Ah! Looks like there's a preference for it under General > Use Shift Key for Tool Switch.
All is well in the world now.
    Thanks!

  • Solved: PS edited files are not integrated in LR2 catalogue correctly

I identified the following problem and the according workaround that seems not to be mentioned in the technote http://www.adobe.com/go/kb404907 or any other article:
    System config:
    Vista 64-Bit (SP1):
user directory is at the default location
    C:\Users\%user%
pictures folder of the user (usually
c:\Users\%user%\pictures) is not on the systemvolume but on
d:\Users\%user%\pictures (changed via properties->path option of the pictures folder)
    LR2
    Catalogue is stored in folder
    d:\Users\%user%\pictures\lightroom
    PS CS3 Extended 10.0.1
    Problem:
If I edit a photo in PS CS3 and save the file the image does not appear correctly in the folder of the LR2 Catalogue. LR2 creates a new entry for the image which is located on the sysvolume (
c:\Users\%user%\pictures) but the image is stored at
d:\Users\%user%\pictures by PS which results in a broken link.
It seems as if either LR2 or PS CS3 has problems if the pictures folder is not within the path of the user directory.
    Solution/Workaround for me:
If the path of the user directory is changed to d:\Users by changing registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
    NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\%USER-SID%\ProfileImagePath everything works as expected.
Using PS as external eEditor could be a solution as well, but I didn't try that.
Can anyone confirm this behaviour or has another explanation for the LR2 behaviour?
    Stephan

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply. I totally agree that it's a very specific bug as my setup is quite unusual. I changed the location for several folders within my user directory and mapped them to several different drives.
I think the problem is not the incorrect use of the drive letter. I guess it's the incorrect determination of the user's pictures folder:
    1. you could e.g. use the CSIDL_MYPICTURES value (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/de-de/library/bb979138.aspx; german page - couldn't find the english version)to determine the path to the user's picture folder or
    2. could just determine the user's diretory and "assume" that the picture folder is located within the home directory (this should be in 99.9% of all installations but is not a must)
If either LR itself uses differnet methods to determine the picture path or if CS3 is reporting the "wrong" information the catalogue is mixed up. In my special case this results in just mixing up the drive letters but this results in completely different paths if I change the folder structure on drive d:

  • I just upgraded to LR4, how do I get all my LR2 images into LR4?

I just upgraded to LR4, how do I get all my LR2 images into LR4?

Images are not "in" Lightroom. Image files are on the hard drive, and the Lightroom edits are in the catalog.
Lr creates a link between the catalog and the image files on the hard drive.
So, there is no need to bring images from one version of Lr to the other.
When you install Lr4 it will find your existing catalog and update it (in fact it updates a copy of the catalog); Lr4 will then "know" where your images are because their location is recorded in the catalog.
It is the unfortunate choice of the word "import" that creates the impression that images are in Lr like eggs in a basket. Nope!

  • Is this a bug in LR2

    Is this a Bug?
I was going to convert a sample bunch of files to DGN to see how it goes
with LR2. I had a directory with about 35 files in it and I used the select
all function to pick all the files in the film strip display. When I ran
the conversion it just converted the first file I picked even though all
the other ones were highlighted. So I then switch to the grid display
selected all the files again just as before and they were all highlight as
before. This time all the files were converted to DNG just as I expected.
Is this the way its supposed to work? Or have I found a bug?
XP SP3, 4gigs, 2 170gig drives with one as a scratch disk and the photo
files stored on a 1TB NAS drive on a gigabit network.

  • LR2.3/Vista: why won't it auto open when camera is plugged in?

    Dear All:
My LR1.4 used to automatically open whenever i plug in (via usb) a camera, very convenient.
i've upgraded to LR2.3, and all seems to be fine.
i just bought a brand new Fuji F200EXR camera, and somehow, "autoplay" does open (that's a Vista autoplay window), but LR2.3 does not open up. even when i choose the link at the bottom of the autoplay window for managing that in Vista, Fuji F200EXR DOES show up, as do other cameras that i've used before, but the drop down menu for the Fuji F200EXR does not contain LR2.3 in it!
may i ask what the proper, correct way is to request that LR2.3 opens up whenever a camera is connected? (it's not an issue with my other cameras, just somehow, the Fuji F200EXR is not quite recognized by LR2.3 or something like that).
    thanks in advance.
PS: the way i do it now is after i plug the camera in, i then open up LR2.3 manually via double clicking the LR2.3 icon on my desktop. i then go to File/import via a device. at which point, LR2.3 takes only a very short time to upload my pictures from the SD card inside the Fuji F200EXR camera. i find the LR2.3 faster and more responsive than my previous LR1.4.

I haven't been shooting any photos lately, so I hadn't run into this yet, but it seems like Lightroom 2.3 didn't install any AutoPlay handlers (which is what adds items to the list in the AutoPlay Control Panel). I plugged in my Fuji camera, and it wasn't there. So I tried by Canon, and it's not there for that camera either.
So I decided to uninstall and re-install LR 2.3, and that seemed to fix it.
So, I'd suggest that you do the same. 2.3, although technically an update, contains the entire program, so just uninstall LR 2.3, then install LR 2.3 update (don't install LR 2.0 first, which is what you get on the install CD). If you don't still have the 2.3 update, you can download it from here:
