LR2.6 Export folder to Catalog crashes

I have encountered a completely reproducable error on my system. This may have existed in LR prior to 2.6, but I was finally able to isolate it and no longer have any systems running older versions.
I have a current folder of images in the catalog on my Laptop that I wish to export to a catalog for import into my desktop. Both systems have been upgraded to LR2.6 at this time.  Exporting from the laptop if I choose a long foldername/filename it can result in a complete crash of the application.Steps taken are as follows:
Choose folder of images from the navigator and right-click, choose "Export this Folder as a Catalog..."
in the next Dialog, choose a suitable location for the export and provide a long name. I used the name of the event, in this case "20091002 Calendar Release Party for UserName - Company Name @ Venue Name". At this point LR2 proceeds to create the catalog file, but as soon as file creation is complete, before the first information is exported, the application crashes, goes "light" (There is an 80% transparent white overlay) and a pop-up is provided that reads "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 64-bit has stopped working  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." The only available button on that dialog is "Close Program."
Looking at the destination, the export created the initial catalog folder and inside that it created the previews.lrdata folder.  I have one initial folder and one sub-folder under that inside previews.  If I manually attempt to create a file in this folder, I am successful, but only with filenames below 25 characters (varies by folder name length). The lr-preview.noindex files have a very long GUID that far exceed the space available for naming.
When I reduced the export catalog name to a much shorter name; "20091009 Calendar Release" the problem was resolved and the export proceeded normally.  I understand that if a name is too long, the limitation is a filesystem issue, however the application should trap this error and not crash without explanation.
There are also two events logged in the Windows Application Event Log.
The first is:
Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000

I am using LR3.3 and had the issue of Lightroom crashing while creating a folder as a catalog.  I unchecked the dng and preview boxes and now the catalog is fine!
Best wishes and I hope Adobe makes the file names longer!

  • Why does "export as a catalog" crash when following directions?

These are my steps: I select a set of folders, then all the photos, then "export as a catalog", choosing to export "smart Previews", and not "export negative files".  The process starts off fine with a flash window saying so, followed by the upper left progress bars tooting along. Unfortunately, after a while the screen says Lightroom has crashed. I restart Lightroom and then immediately close Lightroom with an integrity check and catalog optimization each time and get no warnings about problems. Have followed the procedure four times, with identical results, twice after a complete reboot. In short, "export as a catalog' fails catastrophically, not politely.
My computer setup: LR 5.7, Windows 8.1 x64, 32GB of memory, latest Intel chip, OS on SSD, saving (trying to export to) to large, on same SATA controller, mechanical drive. Hoping to eventually save to USB 3 drive. Windows Resource Monitor shows "free" memory at all points in the process. Have second SSD for camera Raw cache fwiw.
Lightroom status: LR catalog has ~110,000 photos. Successfully created "Smart Previews" for all photos before trying the Export as a Catalog process. About 20% of the 110,000 photos are from Nikon D800 and are RAW/DNG, thus large. The size of the "negative files" is about 1.8TB. The size of the Smart previews catalog is 109GB.
Other, probably related problems: When I select (control A) the 110,000 photos, LR becomes very sluggish. Click selecting the menu has erratic and delayed selection. Eventually, I am able to select the menu items and initiate the "export as a catalog." Otherwise, everything operates "normally."
My concern is that it appears that Lightroom cannot handle 110,000 photos, but I am hoping that some other explanation might exist.

    Rikk,
The basis if my question is this: Adobe touted "Smart Previews" as a super new means by which one could edit/rate/keyword photos without needing the hardware associated with handleing the "negatives files".
My goal is to export my photos (smart previews) and let my wife rate and keyword the photos on her own computer. The Smart Previews version of my 1800 photos database (which is over 1800GB) is only 109GB. This can easily be handled with a USB 3 drive (and perhaps even a SSD one!).
Each time I "export to catalog" to gain this (advertised) functionality, Lightroom crashes. If you or someone else has done an "export as a catalog" of a total database, with a photo database this large, then perhaps I should suspect my setup. Or, perhaps there is some other explination?

  • Problem upgrading windows 3.6 catalog (freshly exported) to LR4 catalog on Mac

I've recently moved from LR3.6 on Windows to LR4.1 on Mac, creating a new catalog in the process.
Now I wish to access my original catalog on the Mac so I first did a full "export to catalog" on the Windows PC (to first consolidate multiple folder locations into a single top-level folder) to an NTFS volume on a USB disk.
Mac obviously read-only on NTFS (in basic config) so I then copied the catalog from the USB to a newly prepared Mac disk. (I'm sure I read somewhere recently that you should do something permissions-wise on a newly prepared disk but can't for the life of me find it now).
I then tried opening the copy of the exported LR3.6 catalog from the new Mac disk & immediately get prompted to upgrade it to LR4.x so click OK.
A few seconds later I get a failure with an error complaining the catalog is corrupted & forwarding me to an LR1.x support page.
As I only have USB2.0 on the PC the export takes hours (280Gb) as does the copy from the USB 2.0 disk to the new Mac disk (via Thunderbolt).
Is there something I can do to "fix" this supposed corruption?
I haven't (yet) tried re-opening the USB-version of the catalog on the PC as it isn't fired up ATM but I have no reason to suspect genuine corruption.
    Any suggestions appreciated!
    Paul

Yep, don't bother to export as catalog.
Look at the catalog on the Windows machine and make sure the folders are shown as a hierarchy (http://www.lightroomqueen.com/blog/2008/12/17/i-have-a-long-list-of-folders-can-i-change-i t-to-show-the-folder-hierarchy/) and set them up that way if they're not.
Then copy your existing catalog over, without needing to export and without needing to copy the files again.

How can I compare a (partial) export folder from iPhoto to an event in iPhoto to find images not exported?  Or better yet, how can I export selected events to a new iPhoto library or an existing iPhoto library with events, titles and keywords intact?

  • Over / Down Icons not in exported folder

Over / Down Icons not in exported folder.
I've created some action buttons, and when a user hovers over it turns blue, and when they click it turns red. The png files I used for this I put into a folder called "IMG" (configuratorname.assets/IMG/blue-50-26.png). This folder is located in the .assets directory that configurator created when I saved the .gpc file. When I export the panel, the custom png files (red & blue) aren't exported into the content folder. How do I get it to export the custom icon png files ? Also, do I have to use a custom path in the the Over Icon and Down Icon fields. Here is what is in there now "Locales/IMG/blue-50-26.png", I think somewhere I read that I need to use a ".." at the beginning so it's a relative reference, not absolute ? My goal is for this panel to work on various machines, and all the needed componets are locally resident and pointed to within the content folder.
Thanks ahead of time for your help.
One last question, should the png file that I'm using as a custom color for the buttons when clicked be the exact dimension of the button, or will it scale the png file ?

In your case, the png files will not be export to content folder, these files will be exported to content/Configurator-Panel.assets/IMG/.
You can not use ".." to set the path of icon pictures. The root directory for icon picture is configuratorname.assets/. The value for icon picture path are relative to this root directory. After exporting, the pictures will be exported to content/configuratorname.assets/.
The png file be scale to fill the dimension of the button. We strongly suggest that you set the png file and the button in same size. If the size of png file is lager, it should be in same ratio with the size of the button.

  • Unable to open Downloads folder- Finder keeps crashing Lion OSx

Just upgraded to Lion OSx a few days ago and all of a sudden, I cannot open my Downloads folder without Finder crashing on me.
I've managed to drag the downloads folder out onto my dock to view in Fan mode so I can access some files but everytime I attempt to open the files in Finder, the whole thing just lags/crashes/rainbow wheels.
Should I try the sudo find / -name .DS_Store -delete command? Some forums I checked says Mac forgets the settings in a few days and reverts back. I'm regretting upgrading to Lion.

    I'm running Version 10.7.4
2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

  • Export Folder Issues

When I right click on an image and select export a folder that I used once a couple of years and 2 LR versons ago keeps popping up as the export folder. I have repeateldy cleared the list but it keeps showing up. This doesn't happen when I use one of my preset. Is there a way to clear this folder out of the folder list permently?

Yes, i have observed this behavior.
If it bothers you really you could just change the name of the folder (in Lr in the folders panel!! - if you do it in Mac Finder / Win Explorer you have to re-link the folder - it will show the question mark!).
It doesn't bother me for this reason: Lr remembers the folder I last exported to. So in most cases I have to change the folder anyway.

  • Won't start up, gets to the avi exporter on startup and crashes

Everything was working fine, then I went and downloaded a shareware video converter to convert mov files to
avi, now elements 8 won't start up.  It goes through the startup process, and when it gets to starting loading exporter AVI.prm it crashes everytime.  I've reloaded the program 2, and I've ran a windows upgrade (reload) once, and removed the converter program.  Any suggestions?

The first thing that I would look into would be to create a System Restore Point for today, and then shut-down the computer. Now, boot into Safe-Mode and chose to go to a System Restore Point, from before you installed the converter, back when things ran properly and test.
    Good luck,

  • Can i Export as a catalog when building a Publishing or exporting plug in?

I want to build a plugin for exporting collection or a group of collection as a catalog, but I dont find any documentation on the SDK about that option. Is it Possible to export as a catalog using this type of plugins or we are limited to export individuals photos.
    Thanks in advance.

I would suggest you post your question again in the main forum. There are a few members over there, who write their own plug-in's who may be able to point you in the right direction.

  • Fireworks not defaulting export to previously exported folder

In Adobe Fireworks for some reason I am not able to export files to previously exported folder, each time I export, I have to navigate to the previously exported path. This is something that was previously working.

    The short answer: no.
Lightroom remembers recently imported files in a collection, but does not remember recently exported files.
That said, you could use the SQLiteroom plugin (free, by me) to round up a collection of *all* exported files, which might help.

  • Changing export folder hangs Lightroom

    Hi!
When trying to change export folder a folder/place selection
dialog is displayed - which slowly keeps adding available locations
like my comuter, Network folder and so on...
After a while a login dialog for MS Passport is displayed
Why, I have no idear! After selecting cancel to the sign in dialog
Lightroom freezes up and I can only terminate it using the task manager.
    Help please!

Long time since I used 09, but in 11 it defaults to the last used folder. Have you tried pointing it to the desktop and then seeing if the subsequent exports go there?
Failing that a couple of things: in any export dialogue command-d will point immediately to the desktop. For more elaborate and feature rich alternatives check out Default Folder X

hmmm .... i've no experience with your particular FCP/QT version combination.
did you try to export a self contained or reference movie and then convert that to FLV in Quicktime Player (or in Compressor)?
similarly, did you try the Export > Using Compressor... option?
