LR2.6 hangs when quitting
I'm running LR 2.6 on a MacBookPro with OS 10.5.8
When I try to quit LR, it hangs and must be force-quit. I can then launch it again and use it without any problem, at least until I try to quit again, when it again freezes up on me.
I've tried going into catalog settings and telling it to relaunch and optimize, but before it can relaunch it must quit...and it hangs. I've tried switching to another catalog, but that also requires a relaunch and when it quits, it hangs.
Other steps I've taken are to delete the prefs...same result. And I trashed/reinstalled the whole app...same result.
Any thoughts on how to get out of this? My work is starting to pile up because I don't trust LR enough right now, even though I seem to be able to use the app just fine until quitting time.
Thanks!
Dane
Just wanted to add a few more things I've tried.
I found that I could launch and quit a different catalog by double-clicking on that catalog file. So after digging around a bit, I found and deleted the lrcat.lock and lrcat-journal files but to no avail.
So it appears to be a problem with that catalog, right? For reasons I don't want to go into here, I have two catalogs I want to merge and the only way I can see to do it is to "export as catalog" from one and "import from catalog" to the other. I hope that makes sense. I'm almost finished, and all that remains are photos from October-December 2009. So in a sense, it might not matter what's wrong with this catalog. If I can just get everything exported, I can trash it. Because of this behavior, though, I don't really trust Lightroom until I can get the problem resolved. Thoughts?

Hi,
Just recently, Safari hangs when I quit it. It then needs to be Force Quit. I use Safaricon for the GUI and I also use Uno, but I have for years and I have never experienced this hanging happening (so I think I can rule them out). I emptied the Cache and deleted the .plist for Safari. I have also Reset Safari, all to no avail. Any suggestions or comments would be gratefully accepted. It's driving me crazy!
Thanks and regards, ChrisHi Barry,
Thanks for the response. Do you really think any haxies would be the culprit this late in the game (not a new version of Safari etc.)? Just curious. I'll give it a shot...but I do love Uno and Safaricon, both are such great software for modifying the GUI, I would hate to lose them.
Regards, Chris -
Please help - Safari "hangs" when quitting
Often when I go to quit Safari, it "hangs" and won't quit. I get the swirling rainbow circle for a while and need to do a "forced quit" restart.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Anything I can do?
Thank you,
ScottishappleYou don't give us much to go on in the description of the problem about what you have tried. The first thing you could try is to check if the behavior is linked to certain websites you browse or the ISP you connect to the internet by. Next, you may want to check the HD vol by repair disk permissions using the disk utility. Next look to safari and empty its caches. Failing that next look to perhaps deleting the com.apple.Safari.plist file and relaunch Safari (this will regenerate plist which like just about everything else is a corruptible file that can cause Safari issues). Beyond all else the obvious last resort system restoration routes such as archive and install are possible considerations.

LR2 hangs when I deselect "Write XMP automaticly..."
When I deselect in catalog settings dialog the "Write metadata changes automaticly in XMP files" (or whatever it is called in real life), the system seems to hang.
I had previously imported several tens (or even few hundreds) of photos in LR during couple hours, but the CPU usage by LR2 was low (0-20%) and there was very little harddisk load, when I made the (de)selection.
In the first couple cases I just killed LR2 after 5-10 minutes, but yesterday I let it run for perhaps one hour. After that LR2 was responsive again.
I believe this was caused by LR2 noticing: "oh no, the user will disable automatic XMP writing, I have to write everything I have in the queue (oh why didn't I do it earlier..., the user will get angry now)"
I'm just wondering:
A ) Why hadn't LR saved everything earlier (it surely had idle time).
B ) Or was LR doing something else, what?
VAnd if anyone is interested, this was on an oldish Win XP SP2 PC, P4 2.26GHz, 1GB RAM. Catalog is on an internal drive, images on an external one which is not fast (perhaps half the speed of the other, newer drive I have).

Since installing the 10.10.3 update, Safari hangs every time I quit the application.
Is there any way to fix this, or should I just move to another browser?Back up all data before proceeding.
Quit Safari if it’s running. Then select
▹ Force Quit…
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Safari may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
Step 1
If Adobe Flash Player is installed, select
▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Advanced ▹ Delete All...
In the sheet that opens, check the box marked
Delete All Site Data and Settings
then click Delete Data. Close the preference pane.
Hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.Safari
Caches/com.apple.Safari.SearchHelper
Caches/com.apple.SafariServices
Caches/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess
Caches/com.apple.WebProcess
Caches/Metadata/Safari
Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginHost.plist
Preferences/com.apple.WebKit.PluginProcess.plist
Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Library folder open. Try Safari again. If the problem is solved, stop here. Close the Library folder. If you still have a problem, continue.
Step 2
Move the following items from the open Library folder to the Desktop (again, some may not exist):
Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
Internet Plug-Ins
Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.Safari.*.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.Extensions.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Preferences/com.apple.WebFoundation.plist
PubSub/Database
Safari
SyncedPreferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Here, "*" stands for a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes.
Note 1: You are not moving the Safari application. You’re moving a folder named “Safari.”
Note 2: This step will remove your Safari extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to reinstall them, do so one at a time, testing each time to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
Try again. Your settings and bookmarks will be lost. The default set of bookmarks will be restored. Delete them all.
If Safari is now working normally (apart from the lost settings), look inside the “Safari” folder on the Desktop for a file named “Bookmarks.plist”. Select
File ▹ Import Bookmarks...
from the Safari menu bar. Import from that file. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the items you moved to the Desktop.
If the issue is still not resolved, quit Safari again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were, overwriting the newer ones that may have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the files you deleted in Step 1. Stop here and post again.
If you don’t like the results of the last step, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you moved or deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. -
Mail 3.2 hangs when quiting it
There is a constant activity called "Getting unread counts" showing up in the activity window in Mail. Everything seems to work ok, but if I quit mail, it just hangs up and I have to force quit it. Any ideas? It is doing it on both my Desktop and MacBook. I sync them on dot mac. Just started happening about a week ago.
Thanks for any help.
LGThanks for the post.
I added my two cents worth to the thread you referred me.
Since there seems to be no fast and easy answer, I will experiment and if I come up with something; I will add it to the main thread.
Thanks again. -

Safari 7.0.3 hangs when resetting safari. How to fix it?
Hello everyone. I recently had an issue when I used the "Reset Safari" option. It hangs when I used it. The only way to make it reset is to force quit, and then reset safari again. Currently, I'm running the latest version of Mavericks (10.9.2). I tried reparing disk permissions many times, but it keeps telling me that Safari's permission is different from group 0 or 80 or whatever. Each repair attempt only ends up repairing Safari's permissions again and again. I thought it only needs to be fixed once, which is unusually strange for me. I have a log file of this, posted below (it's long though!). I'd gladly appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.
Ok, so I have a problem where Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it.
I have documented this problem on my blog here:
Windows 7 hangs when creating a new folder and hangs again when renaming it Rhyous's 127.0.0.1 or ::1
This has my hardware details, etc...
I consider myself an expert at troubleshooting (being in support for over 10 years including time as a Lead Technician doing Windows 2000 support focussing on performance), and have checked quite a few things to try to pinpoint this issue, but I just can't find the cause.
I am asking others if they have seen this issue. I need to know if it is only on my workstation, or if others are seeing it as well.
Have you ever right-clicked, chose new folder and then had to wait 45 seconds for a new folder to appear.
Then the same thing when you try to rename the new folder, a hang of about 45 seconds before the new name take affect.
Anyway, let me know if you have experienced ths.Hi,
I suggest you temporarily uninstall the antivirus program to check the issue. You need to make sure that you have the installation file to reinstall it later.
If it does not work, I suggest you also test the issue in Safe Mode and Clean Boot to determine if this is a hardware or a software issue.
Good luck!

Safari Hangs when multiple tabs and windows open [was part of safari slow-]
This is to create a new topic with regards to Safari, but with many windows and/or tabs open.
Some have posted information in the previous topic, i.e.: safari slow - has anyone talked to someone at Apple?
This post will be specifically about hangs and ball spinning cursors when many windows are being used simultaneously within Safari.
Please post your comments below.No worries have sorted it now...you need to go to;
System Prefences-->General-->Untick the box which says 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps' (A couple of lines from the bottom)
And then most importantly restart the mac. It was this last step I never did and thats why I couldn't get it to stop this unwanted behaviour. -
FCPX 10.0.7 hangs when loading multiple projects - a non-destructive work around
FCPX 10.0.7 hangs when loading multiple projects - a non-destructive work around....
Hi Guys, I upgraded from FCPX 10.0.6 to 10.0.78 and discovered to my immense frustration that many of my 100+ FCPX projects would not load.
Symptom:
FCPX 10.0.7 appears to hang ("spinning beachball") with either high CPU% on a single core or with 1-2% CPU busy (activity monitor.app) when a FINAL CUT PROJECT is selected. No logs error information in /var/logs ..hmm
notices that the "status circle" spins around endlessly.
Actvity Monitor.app shows "Final Cut Pro (Not Responding)
and also I notice in some cases that an OEM filter ("NEAT VIDEO NOISE REDUCTION") is in progress to be loaded. FCPX V10.0.7 must be FORCED QUITtted to remove it from system.
History: Upgraded FCPX from V10.0.6 to V10.0.07.
"FINAL CUT EVENTS" and "FINAL CUT PROJECTS" on a single file system on SAS 16TB disk array (768MB/sec read via AJA system test) and 60% utilised capacity… FCP EVENTS has 400 events in it .. some 5.2TB of Prores essence etc .. all works fine! (i.e. the storage system is first class and is NOT the issue)
32GB of RAM on MAC PRO 2009 Nehalem 16 x Vcore with ATI 5780 card and ATTO HBA's (i.e. plenty of resources!)
As usual with any "upgrade" to FCPX 10.0.? all the EVENT objects need to be upgraded. In my case this takes an hour or two.. so I do that when asleep.
After experiencing above, I restored the FCPX EVENTS LIbrary of that file system from LTO4 tape archive (BRU-PE ) and still had the same issues as above.
WORKAROUND:
FORCEd QUIT FCPX V10.0.7
RENAMEd "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" to "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original"
created (make) a new "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" (use finder)
For each project !!! in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original", (do one project at a time!!!)
MOVE "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original/one_fcpx_projext_nnnn_folder" to "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects"
Make sure you move ONLY one project at a time. If you have a subfolder of projects, please do each project one at a time (serially!)
Launch FCPX V10.0.7 and BE PATIENT!!! .. DONT click or fiddle with the UI.. it seems when you intervene it locks up as well…
Let FCPX V10.0.7 settle….
select the project you just added above and RELINK any objects it needs. Thumbnails and proxies will be rendered again.. just be patient
wait until ALL the rendering as stopped.
QUIT FCPX V10.0.7
(now if FCPX locks up, just force it out and start again as above).
repeat for all projects in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original" (go to step 4 ad do until all projects moved)
When all is COMPLETED MAKE SURE YOU ARCHIVE an instance (or make a backup ) of "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects"
If this procedure has worked the folder "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects_original" will have zero (nill, none) projects in it.
I have managed to restore ALL my "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" this xmas between drinking etc. I'm satisfied that its all ok.
Other issues:
use DISK WARRIOR or TT PRO 6 to make sure that the file system volume where your "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" are is physically ok. I noticed some entries in file system's volume table that represented objects in "/volumes/some_file_system_volume/Final Cut Projects" were at fault when I used these utilities… FWIW.
SUMMARY: yes this took ages to d, however luckily I had everything in at least 3 instances in an archive which has saved me many time in the old FCP& and prior days… it was just a matter of time to put it back together.
I put this outage down to may be my own impatience when I first fired up FCPX 10.0.7 after the upgrade.
I'm interested if this workaround is helpful to others and in addtiion if others have a more satisfactory remedy.

Hong KongHi Eb, yeah I could not see any "memory leak" or unusual consumption of REAL memory whose less availability would cause excessive PAGEing and SWAPping as seen in the Activty Monitor.app
I watch this carefully especially the use of REAL MEMORY by 3rd Paryy apps. BTW there are a few that cause ALLOCATED but NOT USED memory (blue in the A.M.app UI). Simply a unix PURGE command can release that memory and help clean up the PAGE and VM swap files (its alleged!).
Yes, you may be might with the element of "Luck" involved. I would add though, that having MULTIPLE project displaying in the STORYLINE window and loading always caused my FCP 10.0.7 jam up at startup with h symtoms and observations I described.
TIP: I might also add that for a super speedy launch of FCPX one may also emply setting each PROJECT's UI to show only AUDIO thus negating the need to contstruct or reneder out a PREVIEW ui in each clip in the storyline.
Your/Apples suggestion of the movememt (rename) of "Final Cut Pro Projects" to "Final Cut Pro Projects Hidden" is similar to what I proposed above to stop FCPX 10.0.7 accessing and building it up at startup. This workaround has been useful inthe past as well.
ALso one might also get the stick out and remove (delete/rm) the ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState in one's home ~/Library so that FCPX wont do such a neat job reinstating FCPX last time you crashed it... This has been helpful also in diagnosing my issues.
Lastly I have noticed that:
impatience clicking on the FCPX UI when in the unstable state causes it to lock up with NO visible CPU% busy.... as if its waiting on something which is usually me MEMTERMing it via FORCE QUIT and
the projects where I have employed the NEAT VIDEO Noise Reduction OEM filter for FCPX seem to exasserbate the PROJECT loading issues when several PROJECTS are available at FCPX startup time.
As of yesterday I have some 400+ EVENTS Final Cut Pro Events and 130+ projects of varying compexites in a single file system on Final Cut Pro Projects all working fine and as good as gold again!
Oh and one more thing, I had to RE-RENDER many projects of them again... strange as the FCP PROJECT library was renstated from a recent LTO archive as of V10.0.6 FCPX.. strange that...I would have expected if the projects and events were 10.0.6/7 compatable as proposed by Tom, that this would not be necessary... hmm straneg that
I'll monitor this thread.
Thanks for your comments lads! -
JNDI hanging when trying to BIND
We are currently having problems with our application hanging when it tries to obtain LDAP context. I have attached a thread dump. Once all the threads start hanging the weblogic server cannot do any work and needs to be restarted. Any help would be appreciatted.
I can make it happen by creating a load on the server.
Code snippet:
we call a static method to return us a context instance, context is not shared.
env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,"com.sun.jndi.ldap.LdapCtxFactory");
env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "ldap://"+directoryHost+":"+directoryPort);
env.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, name);
env.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, password);
env.put(Context.REFERRAL,"follow");
DirContext ctx = new InitialDirContext(env);
return ctx;
Thread dump (there are a few threads like this)
"ExecuteThread: '36' for queue: 'default'" daemon prio=5 tid=0x2718c808 nid=0x77

Environment:
iplanet directory server 5.1 Service Pack 2
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_08-b03) (also tried 1.4.2)
OS Name Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195
BEA Weblogic Server 7.0 sp2We are having the same problem as well and this has been reported else where as well.
We were able to reproduce this problem on the full blown Weblogic application, with a simple program which creates a large number of connection in quick succession - after a certain number of connections ( about 60), the client simply hangs! It turns out that this is a known problem with iPlanet 5.1 with SSL: http://www.openldap.org/lists/openldap-software/200205/msg00567.html
I have also posted this message to the Directory Server forum at Sun, but have not heard anything yet!

There have been quite a few other cases of this problem ( probably manifesting itself in other forms!)

On my PC running windows XP Service Pack 3, iTunes 11.0.3.42 causes it to hang when attempting to view a .MOV (1.6 GB) requiring a cold boot. What could be causing this? Corrupted .MOV? Too little RAM? It successfully plays a 162 MB .MOV.
Hello David,
Thank you for providing all that information about the iTunes issue you are experiencing. We would first want to rule out any software issues before we can determine if it has to do with RAM. I found an article that will help you isolate and troubleshoot software issues that could be causing iTunes to behave this way:
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues

I hope this helps you get back on track with watching movies in iTunes!

ITunes hangs when I try to sync with my apple devices
Hello,
I have followed troubleshooting article iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch but this hasn't help me fix the issue.
I am running OS/X 10.9.4 and iOS 7.1.2
When I create a new user account on my MAC the devices connect fine. If I create another iTunes Library on my original user account then iTunes still hangs when I connect the devices. The article doesn't describe what to do next. What other configuration information is there that is common across both iTunes Libraries?
Thank you,Back up all data.
