LR2 (&LR1.4) on Vista Ultimate vs XP Pro-problems

I have been reading the posts on a number of Sites regarding problems users are experiencing with LR2. Here is may tale:
I recently bought new hardware(replacing my XP Pro system) with the following features:
O/S Vista Ultimate
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6700GHz 2.67 GHz
Memory 4.00 GB
System Type 32-bit Operating system
I have LR 1.4 and LR 2 installed on both the old XP machine and the new Vista one.
There are two problems(at least for now) I am experiencing with both LR 1.4 and LR 2 on the Vista machine:
1. Quite frequently when I am working on images LR suddenly goes into "Not Responding" and I have wait up to a minute or more while it sorts itself out.
2. Speed of operation (esp. sliders). If I am editing an image in Develop Mode when I move any of the sliders (e.g. Exposure etc.) I move the slider and then the # value has to catch up with the slider - very anoying and time consuming. Is this called sticky sliders?
As I mentioned, neither of these problems are present when I use my old XP Pro machine.
I should also point out that I have not had the same problems with PS CS3.
It seems to me that either there is something wrong with the way I have my new machine configured or there is a coding problem in LR that affects its performance when installed on a Vista machine.
Can anyone shed some light?
Thanks, Alan

Turn off superfetch in Vista. It automatically fills your unused ram with stuff you "might" need later. A program like Lightroom uses lots of RAM so Vista constantly refresshes the superfetch use. If you turn it off Lightroom runs much more smoothly.
You can also turn down the indexing in the power management properties to "power saver". This will limit the amount of times Vista accesses the HDD to index new files. Make sure you have upgraded the indexing engine to v4 as it is much better in managing the resources it needs to perform.
Disabling Aero helps performance of LR. There's a registry hack that allows you to get a right click context menu to turn it on and off easily.

  • Vista Ultimate: 64-bit Installation Problem

Ok so I'm trying to install vista ultimate 64 bit, and when boot camp tells me to insert the disk, I did, then It restarted and when booting, it came to a black screen with white text saying:
    1.
    2.
    *+Select cdrom boot type:+*
The problem here is that I can't type a darn thing! They keyboard doesn't do anything at all, and not even plugging in a usb keyboard worked.
For those who will ask, yes, I have a genuine copy of Vista Ultimate 64-bit which includes a 32 bit version, but I'd rather NOT use the 32 bit one, because hey, I've paid for the one with 64 for a reason.
Does anybody know what to do here? Is there a fix or am I screwed?

Microsoft, Apple and Intel belong to the EFI group. That isn't to say that they implement the same. Some Macs have EFI64 (2.x, UEFI), some have EFI32 (1.x).

  • Vista Ultimate SP1 DVD Install Problem

Just received my new OEM Vista Ultimate SP1 DVD and am trying to set it up under bootcamp. I first partition the hard drive, then when it restarts to install the os, I come across a blank screen that says this"
    1.
    2.
    Select CD-Rom Boot Type
I can't go any further, as no input is accepted on the keyboard. I can't figure out what to do as i have tried to research the problem, but I have only come across a few unhelpful posts... Please help or let me know if you're experencing the same problem... Thanks!

You will not be able to boot from the DVD provided by MS (as you already know).
To get around this, you need to use oscdimg.exe (provided by MS as a part of Windows Automated Installation Kit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=94BB6E34-D890-4932-81A5 -5B50C657DE08&displaylang=en) to create an iso file and burn that.
After downloading the AIK, you can extract oscdimg.exe from the iso and put it in a directory that is on your PATH, or just create a new directory for it and run it from there (say, C:\oscdimg).
Then, one way to do this would be to create a couple of temporary directories (say, C:\vistadvd, C:\vistaiso), copy all of the files off of your DVD into the C:\vistadvd directory, then issue the following command from whatever directory you installed oscdimg.exe into:
    oscdimg.exe -n -m -bC:\vistadvd\boot\etfsboot.com C:\vistadvd C:\vistaiso\vista.iso
After burning that iso, you should be able to boot with it and do your installation.
    Good luck.

  • Firefox 6 started crashing 2 days ago. I tried several system restores to no avail and now I can't uninstall it via control panel. Running vista ultimate. Never had problems before. Please advise

The program no longer will open or respond in any way.

Hi, Well Bob, that is certainly good news!!
You did very well, glad it is working for you. That was tricky, getting all those ducks back in their row:-)
You might try www.ESPN3.com. If you have any problems read the system requirements and especially the FAQ part.
Thanks for posting the steps you took. Hope you didn't have a difficult time following the procedures on the Uninstall or Install sites.
No more betas for you!! LOL,

  • LR2 won't start on Vista Ultimate

    Configuration
    Vista Ultimate
    Intel E8500 dual core 3.1ghz
    MSI P45 Neo-3 FR
    DDR2 PC8500 8gig
EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS video card
LR2 fails as soon as the Library screen is rendered. Every time!

    Don, Bradley, and Dorin,
Thanks for your comments. Outside of Outlook, mine was a virgin Vista machine and I was impressed with the poor performance and instability of 64-bit LR2.
I have only installed Mozilla on my new 24", 3.06 GHz, 4-gig iMac. 64-bit LR2 performs very nicely on this platform. I imported about 2000 images this weekend, loaded the controlled vocabulary, applied keywords to all, selected and developed about 200, and used the results to export all five types of web content. All without incedent.
Don, I agree with you that my solution to the problem was over the top. The reality is that my LR2/Vista experience was the straw that broke the camel's back. It takes way too much time anually to keep a Microsoft machine running at peak performance. A few hours of forum browsing last week convinced me that Vista was going to be even worse. Dorin's testimony of disabling services and tasks is consitent with the kinds of tweaking required to keep a Vista machine in good working order. I have long been convinced that the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the Mac platform is materially less than that of Microsoft. The initial investment is higher, but if your time is worth more than about $25 an hour, the break even will come quickly.
With regard to the stability of LR2, it is my expectation that Lightroom will always have bugs. The complexity of the application will keep it from being any other way.
    Having saig that, LR2 rocks!

  • Windows Vista Ultimate and Error -42018

    Hi there,
I upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate about a month ago. I was trying to play music and download new content and the new content downloads would stop with -42018 - unexpected error.
I had to run the compatability wizard and allow Windows XP SP2 settings with administrator access to correct the issue.
I also lost most of my licensing when I upgraded. Hold off for I-Tunes to work with Vista if you are thinking about upgrading.
And on a side note, I think that the new Windows Media "Experience" in Vista is not all that great.

I recently got the Live! Cam Voice for my computer with Windows Vista Ultimate. And for some reason the built in microphone won't work at all - even the voice recorder, the Yahoo! I need help in installing Windows Vista Ultimate in my A200-13O.
My current operating system is Windows Vista Basic and I want to upgrade it to Windows Vista Ultimate.
Based on the driver download section I need the following drivers to be installed.
    1 Windows Vista RTM
2 Intel ICH7M Chipset Utility native
    3 Intel 945GM Display Driver
    or
    3 nVIDIA G72MV-A3/NB7P-GS Display Driver
    4 Realtek ALC861D Audio Driver
    5 Realtek 10/100 8101E/ Gigabit 8111B LAN Driver

    19 TOSHIBA Supervisor Password
    20 TOSHIBA SD Memory Utilities

    23 TOSHIBA Speech System
24 TOSHIBA Extended Tiles for Windows Mobility Center V1.01
    25 TOSHIBA Fingerprint Utility V5.6.0.3221
I have already downloaded most of them but I can't find some like [2] Intel ICH7M Chipset Utility, [11] Intel Kedron Wireless LAN Driver, [23] TOSHIBA Speech System. Also some of the drivers are not installing properly.
Can you please help me out.

The chipset driver you can get on the Intel webiste
    www.intel.com
But I think the driver could also be in the display driver because its the same chip.
The WLAN driver I have found on the Toshiba website so download and install it.
The speech system could be integrated in the sound driver.
But download and install all drivers and the system will work.

  • Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same Mac Pro HD?

Has anyone been able to install both Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit) on the same dedicated Windows hard drive? I have four HD in my Mac Pro, and one of them is dedicated for Windows (and bootable via Boot Camp). I found the following technical articles about installing Windows XP & Vista on the same hard drive (using two separate partitions) using a VMWare machine as the test system:
    http://apcmag.com/howto_dual_boot_vista_and_xp_with_vista_installed_first__the_stepbystepguide.htm
    http://apcmag.com/howto_dualboot_vista_with_xp__stepbystep_guide_withscreenshots.htm
Has anyone successfully installed Windows XP (32-bit) and Vista 64-bit) on the same NTFS partition?
I already have Windows XP Pro (32-bit) SP3 installed on my single NTFS hard drive. I am looking for the best way to add the Vista 64-bit installation on the same hard drive.
Any thoughts and advise are appreciated.

Windows has its own list of boot OSs, and default, from msconfig. It will sit and wait for xx-seconds on startup in Windows if you want to boot from an alternate.
As to whether Apple's OS Switcher (aka startup disk bootcamp control panel or tray icon) sees both, I had Windows Home Premium and Ultimate 64, and pretty sure OS X saw both. That was pre-Leopard and before there were 64-bit Apple drivers.
I can't think of any scenerio of wanting to mix 32-bit and 64-bit on the same paritition, you realize you can't install the one over the other and must do a clean install.
When I added a partition out of main partition (I wanted to put search index and page file on their own partition) those partitions aren't seen - are hidden - to Leopard.

    Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is NOT enabled in Windows Firewall.
We'd better check on that, kris. If you enable iTunes in your Windows firewall, does that help with your connection? See the following document for instructions:
