LR3 Hang On Editing GF1 raw image

I am getting repeatable hangs in Lightroom 3 while editing an image. The hangs are seen in both LR 3.2 and the LR3.3RC running 64 bit on MacOSX 10.6.4.
The hang occurs after manipulating a GF1 raw image. The edits are fairly basic - a small horizontal perspective correction, three clone patches applied and then while brushing filters using the auto-mask option to adjust saturation.
Eventually, LR will hang - CPU bound saturating both cores at 100%.  A trace with Shark shows the CPU load is dominated by two anonymous functions in CameraRaw and luaF_recfillpcbase.
At this point, the UI is completely unresponsive and the only way to recover is to force-quit Lightroom and restore the catalogue from backup.
Anyone seen this before? My suspicion is that it is specific to GF1 raw files with perspective correction applied. Any suggestions as to how to work around it - it is currently leaving Lightroom completely unusable for me!
Thanks,
-- Mark

The computer is a new 17" MacBookPro with 4GB ram. This is not the world's fastest computer, but neither is it a slouch and it is well above the minimum requirements to run LR. I do get major performance issues if I have a lot of brush edits (LR uses up all the DRAM and the whole system falls in to paging hell), but in this case there is almost no editing before the program locks up in what appears to be an infinite loop of some kind.
I think that there is something definitely screwy with Panasonic raw files, however. We have quite a few different cameras, and the Panasonic files seem to consisently cause more slow downs than other raw files of comparable resolution - noticeably when applying perspective correction. This is true even when the memory footprint hasn't gone crazy.
As an aside, I am not very happy with LR3. When it works, the results are great. But I seem to have hit far more bugs in LR3 than I ever saw in LR2 (collection sorting, publishing bugs, the assorted crop control irritations).

After editing a RAW image in PE13 I can't get it back into my iPhoto library. If edited first in iPhoto, and sent to PE13 for adjustments,
I can get it back into my iPhoto library. Ideas?

Thanks for answering my question. I always have had RAW checked to an external editor which is PE13 on my Preferences panel in iPhoto.
I probably didn't make myself clear. When I send an ORIGINAL RAW untouched, unedited image to PE13 and do the editing and the
adjustments- (it looks great) and then try and SAVE it and forward it to my iPhoto library, it will not be sent. On the other hand if any editing
at all is first performed in iPhoto and then sent to PE13 for adjustments, and I SAVE it, it asks if I want to Replace this new edited image with
what already exists in my iPhoto library, I click REPLACE, the little wheel spins, I go to iPhoto and the new image is there. PE13 does
accept an original RAW image for editing because it will save it in PE13 in the RECENTLY EDITED column. Ideas? I need to keep my iPhoto
    library intact. Ideas? Thanks.

  • I uploaded and edited my RAW image, clicked 'Save As', and changed the file type from .psed to .jpg.

I edited my raw image in Photoshop CS6, selected 'Save As', and changed the file type from .psed to .jpg. I also selected 12 and large file when the window popped up, concluding my 'saving as'. My computer does not recognize the file type and won't open them. Can someone help me? Thanks!

When naming files, stick to the letters of the ENGLISH alphabet, numbers and underscores.  Do not use illegal characters like apostrophes, commas, asterisks, ampersands, hatch or pound signs, diacritics or accented characters, slashes, etc.
While the period (dot) is not an illegal character per se, your file names should have only one period and that should always be followed by the file type extension.

  • How can I edit a RAW image in Adobe Bridge and/or Photoshop?

Whenever I drag and drop a photo or group of images from iPhoto. it automatically converts them to jpegs. Even when taken as RAW images. With iPhoto 09, you could do a search of the IMG_#### listed in iPhoto, and a normally-hidden folder full of the original downloaded RAW images turned up in the search. Now, in iPhoto 11, the RAW images newly downloaded DO NOT show up in any system searches (using 10.8.4. It was bad enough when they were hidden... now they are virtually gone.
I want to use iPhoto for organization and some editing, but some photos I want to work with in the RAW format and save as TIFFs. How do I do that?

Whenever I drag and drop a photo or group of images from iPhoto. it automatically converts them to jpegs.
Drag and Drop and Media Browsers access the iPhoto Previews only. No conversion, just the previews.
With 10.8 Spotlight no longer searches within packages, that's to protect the inexperienced user from trashing his or her library inadvertently - as directly accessing the file can do.
To use Raws with an external editor:
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    But there's a kludge here.
iPhoto sends a copy of the file to Photoshop. In the case of a Jpeg you simply save and it all comes back to iPhoto seamlessly. However, if you use a Save As then Photoshop is creating a new file and iPhoto knows nothing about this.
Now here's the catch with Raws. You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

  • Editing non-raw image files in Adobe Photoshop

    Hi,
I am currently digging into the world of Lightroom and setting up a work flow which in my case needs to include editing non-raw files in Adobe Photoshop.
Please bear in mind that I am quite new to Lightroom so I am not sure I have found all shortcuts and settings to manipulate.
I will explain what I trying to do (and why) and hope that the community can comment and help put if possible.
I myself shoot almost everything in RAW format, and I have been using Photoshop (PS) and Camera Raw (ACR) for some years now. I am now on Photoshop CS6.
But now the amount of images to handle requires a CMS, so I went for Lightroom 4 - hoping/believing that I would find an effective and efficient work flow integration between the two Adobe products.
But I am more and more also helping others to enhance their images, and I most often get jpg files as image source.
I am used to using PS layers, filters, smart objects etc extensively to do what I want to do.
OK, I admin that I already use ACR quite a lot, and sometimes even as the only tool even for jpg images.
I have began diving/snorkeling with friends and often the images we bring back home is in jpg format, and so far I still believe that the best image "restoration" can be done in Photoshop using adjustment layers, channel mixing and filters to get satisfactory results.
So now on to my concerns and issues:
    1) Lightroom user interface efficiency - "Edit in"
When I want to edit a jpg image in Photoshop I :
    action
    comment
    - left click image to select it
ok, I agree this is needed
    - right click image to bring up context menu
ok, I agree this is needed
    - move cursor to "Edit in", and wait for another context menu
    ok, ...
    - click "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS6"
    Yes that's want I want
    - Lightroom presents the "Edit Photo with Adobe Photoshop CS6" selection menu.
Yes I know, I saw it the last
    nnn times I did it
    - if I need option "Edit a Copy" or "Edit Orginal" I move cursor again, left click to select ,
move cursor to Edit and left click
    - and finally Lightroom sends the jpg image to Photoshop as a jpg image
No, I want a tiff file since that
is what I have set up in
    preferences
OK, I know that I can also use the keyboard instead of mouse for this, but the number of actions required from my side is pretty much unchanged.
For a quick working, Lightroom and PS skilled person, this is just annoying.
Is this effecient?     Well it depends. For Lightroom beginners this is good. But for me it is a true annoying obstacle
    2) Lightroom "Edit in" - is it effective
Is this effective?     I say no.      I have specified in preferences that I want PS to receive a TIFF file in Adobe RGB 1998 color space
Also, I cannot change to TIFF in PS without losing the link between the two images. (If I do, the new TIFF file is not imported by Lightroom, so I have to that manually)
I have found out that I can choose the path "Select image - select "Open as Smartobject in Adobe Photoshop".
This will give me a tiff file, and when saved in PS the jpg and tiff files are linked and Lightroom has automatically imported the tiff file into the Catalog.
What I need / what I would like to know / what I would like to have:
    * Is there a (customizable) keyboard shortcut that enables me to: Select Picture + Use shortcut  - and then I end up in Photoshop (with the Edit option I use 90% of the time) ?
    * Is there a preference that I can set so that jpg images also are opened as tiff files in Photoshop per default?
    * Is there a way to select multiple images and launch them all in Photoshop (and keeping the link between the jpg and tiff files) ?
    * I would like a preference setting allowing me to choose that any new file coming back from Photoshop (after "Edit in" ) is written to a sub-folder, or to a specific folder set by me.
This would align with my work flow for jpg handling, where the jpg is the "original" and the tiff file is what will eventually end up as image "master" (from where I print,  or produce web / HDTV jpg's).
    * Is there a way to automatically launch a Photoshop Action on the file coming from Lightroom?
This would also help in my work flow. E.g. I have currently 100 jpg's and avi files which are UW (under water shots) and the adjustment layers I build are always the same (to start with).
Of course, I can launch the Action once I am in Photohop  - but again, doing 1-5 times is ok, doing it more than 100 times ...
    * I am skilled computer programmer  - can I use Lightroom SDK to write plug-ins to achieve the above enhancements ?
    Regards
    Bosse W

    * Is there a (customizable) keyboard shortcut that enables me to: Select Picture + Use shortcut  - and then I end up in Photoshop (with the Edit option I use 90% of the time) ?
-- The keyboard shortcut Command/Ctrl+E will perform steps 2-4 in your above list. You only have to click the Edit button, as the last choice (Edit Original, Edit Copy, Edit Copy with LR adjustments) will be remembered.
    * Is there a preference that I can set so that jpg images also are opened as tiff files in Photoshop per default?
-- No, a JPEG in Lightroom will always open as a JPEG in Photoshop. If you have made changes to the file that are not supported by the JPEG format (e.g. added a layer) when you go to save the file, it will be saved as either a TIFF or PSD, based on the preference in Lightroom.
    * Is there a way to select multiple images and launch them all in Photoshop (and keeping the link between the jpg and tiff files) ?
-- Yes, select all the files you want to edit, and use the keyboard shortcut, menu command, or right-click context menu command.
-- No, there is no automatic way to do this. If you use the Edit a Copy method, the copy is created instantly in the same folder as the original.
-- Yes and No, this is not something that can be setup in Lightroom, but you can set it up in Photoshop using the Script Events Manager.
    * I am skilled computer programmer  - can I use Lightroom SDK to write plug-ins to achieve the above enhancements ?

  • LR 4 edit Camera-RAW-Image in PS CS 6 - edited photos are not shown in LR

Platform Win 7 SP1 64 bit german, LR 4.1 german, PS CS6 german with Camera RAW 7.1, catalog with 66800 images
When I select a RAW-Image and select edit in PS CS 6 the image is opened in photoshop and everythings seems to work find. But after saving the image (as tiff, using default settings) nothing habens in LR - the image is not imported into the catalog.
When trying to sync the folder manually, the first dialog shows that one image (this image) will be added, but then an error message is shown that no image has been imported.
This is  a problem with my big main catalog which has been migrated from LR 3, but it works fine when creating a new catalog.
Also importing the existing huge catalog into a new catalog did not solve the problem (but the images edited within the old catalog were shown).
So it seems that LR does only a partial "import" when editing images in CS6.
Any hints to solve the problem are welcome
       Thanks, Christian

Some further reflection on this issue.
If "sync folder" shows the edited TIFF in the filesystem but is then not importing anything, one explanation may be: this image IS already in the Catalog; but Lightroom's current view has filtered it out so it is not displayed.
This might not be the case - and I hesitate to suggest the too-obvious (though the too-obvious is often what trips us up , even the most experienced). But it does at least fit with having the problem in one Catalog but not in another... if one Catalog happens to be set to show its images in some selective way which excludes these image versions.
Library screen / Catalog panel / "all photographs"; then Grid view / Filter bar / "None"; then Photo menu / Stacking / "expand all stacks"; then View menu / Sort / "Capture time" (or the same operations done another way) should either eliminate, or confirm. You should then see each and any edit version that is present, right next to its related original.
It may be that the Catalog, and its contents, are fine.

  • Question About Edit of Raw Images

I'm contemplating upgrading to iPhoto 08. It's nice that iPhoto can import raw camera images, but I am trying to understand what it does with them. When you import a raw camera image into iPhoto is it right away converted into some other format? If it's kept in raw format and you edit it, are the edits done on the raw image or some converted format?
I guess what I am getting at is that if there is a conversion to 8-bit grey level images when editing, then the advantage of shooting raw, which could be 12-bit, is lost. If there is a conversion to, say, a 16-bit TIFF, that would be okay.
Unrelated question: How the heck do you do a search just in this forum? The search box at the top right seems to be searching the whole Apple web site.
    Thanks.

When iPhoto imports a RAW file it creates a jpg version of it for viewing and editing my iPhoto. Once a modified version is created, the RAW import or first edit of a jpg, further edits are written to an xml file and applied by iPhoto. So you're always one jpg edit away from the original.
As I understand it if you shoot B/W RAW you will get a color jpg version as the RAW contains ALL of the data, including color. The jpg that iPhoto creates is 8 bits per channel.
Now you can set iPhoto to edit the RAW file if you use an external editor like PS or PSE. When you do that a new file has to be created and saved to the desktop and imported as a new file. That the nature of RAW editing and iPhoto.
The current search function has been discontinued temporarily.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Importing and editing Canon Raw images with iPhoto

After importing pictures as soon the editing window is open, the picture turn green as showed on the enclosed screenshot. The pictures remain green after edit.
Already tried to repair disc and permission via recovery function at restart, then because negative,
    Yosemite reinstalled.
Tried also different ways to import pictures without results.
Only the pictures imported with Yosemite are affected. Raw files already imported with Mavericks are fine.

Unfortunately I still have the problem. When importing pictures via Canon Utility in iPhoto, the editing window was fine. But shutting down iphoto and re-opening the problem appears. So the problem is not related to the importing method.
I confirm that these are the pictures imported after Yosemite intallation. With mavericks it was ok. The old pictures are not affected.
The problem is also present opening the library in Aperture. Enclosed an example of  my turned "green" Picture

  • Can Not Seem To Edit some Raw images

    Hello,
I have I-Hhoto 6 and mostly shoot my images in the RAW format. I recently brought in some images that I shot in B&W and color from my Canon Power Shot Pro 1, well first thing is they all came in as color. But when I go to use the effect to bring it back to B&W that effects button is greyed out. Another roll before and after work fine. But for some reason this paticular roll will not let me use the effects? Can anyone help me... have you run across this your self? Thanks for any help... oh yes also if you know how to bring them in as B&W when importing the first time, that would be helpful too.
    Peace,

Another one missing vital information. *sigh*
    What version of PS?

  • LR3.6 failing to view Raw images on Canon 5D

Hi, I've just installed LR 3.6 on my new Wins64 laptop and it is unable to view RAW files from my Canon 5D Mark1.  This is working fine on my Win32 PC though.  It looks like I need to install Camera Raw 5.2 or later but I can only file 'Update' downloads which fail to install.  LH says it's up-to-date when I check for updates and theres no Plug-In Extras available..
    Any Ideas anyone?
    Thansk Andy

Lightroom does not use the ACR Plugin but uses the same process engine which is built in. LR 3.6 is the equivalent to ACR 5.6. If you installed from the CD check the Menu > about to see if you actually have version LR 3.6 installed it should also say the ACR 5.6.
The Lightroom downloads are available at this link.

Thanks. So it is probably worth upgrading to Aperture?
And you say that because? While Aperture has more features and more capabilities than iPhoto - especially in working with RAW - this is not one - depending on what yo do with previews in Aperture it may be even more difficult to use the edited photos incorrectly - iPhoto is simple - just correctly access the edited photo as TD suggested
To access the resulting jpeg you can export in any format except Original, drag to the desktop or use a media browser
    Same same for Aperture

  • Why does Raw image open in PSE 11 Editor as jpeg instead of as RAW image?

For several years I have been managing my photos in iphoto and using PSE as an external editor for editing images. I currently use PSE 11 on an iMac with OS X Lion (version 10.7.5). My iPhoto Library is divided into a number of sub-libraries via iPhoto Library Manager. I have unexpectedly encountered a problem attempting to edit a RAW image (in this case a .NEF image from a Nikon D200) in a sub-library containing images shot in 2007. When I right click on the image and select Edit in External Editor the image opens in PSE 11 Editor, but it opens as a jpeg and not as an .NEF image. This is in spite of the fact that in iPhoto/Preferences/Advanced/RAW Photos I have checked "Use RAW when using external editor."
As an alternative approach I tried dragging and dropping the RAW image into the PSE 11 Editor icon in the Dock, but I got the same result.
I can't recall having this problem previously and would appreciate knowing what might be the source of the problem along with a suggested fix.

I took a clue from both of your responses. I exported a copy of the original RAW file to my desktop. Then I went to PSE Editor and clicked File/Open and selected the RAW file on the desktop. This automatically changed the Format setting to Camera Raw. I then clicked Open and lo and behold my RAW file opens in Camera Raw!
I’m now where I want to be to edit this image in Camera RAW, but I never before had to go around the horn like this to get there! This is very similar to the procedure I follow when I edit jpegs in Camera Raw.
I’m happy to report that this workaround did the job, but I have no idea why it was necessary in this instance. Hopefully this issue will be confined to this one particular iPhoto sub-library!

  • Photoshop CS4 won't open Raw image

Not sure what happened, but when I edit a raw image, and push open Photoshop opens but does
not open the image. I just updated to 11.01, and updated camera raw to 5.6
I reinstalled Photoshop, and the updates and the same thing happens.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Okay this could be a tough one.
I don't use bridge in my normal work flow, I use ACDSee v3 for viewing my photos and graphic designs.
I am a wildlife photographer and have over 300 gigs of photos dating back to 2007.
I just installed a 2 terrabyte HD, and copied these files to this hard drive so that I have two hard drives with these files on them in case of a HD failure.
I opened a file in Camera Raw, edited it, and choose open. Photoshop opened and the would not open the file, and more or less freezes with still some capabilities in the menu. It won't close if you try and exit, and I need to use task manager to close Photoshop.
I then opened bridge, and purged the cache on that file, reopened the same Raw file CR2, edited it in ACR and then opened it in Photoshope and it opened.
I opened and closed files in a lot of older files and it worked fine. Is there a way to purge all the files, or is this not a good thing to do?
I take photos almost on a daily basis, so going through each folder would be a huge task.
