LR3 JPEG/DNG Metadata Confusion

Hi,
I'm a little confused about XMP data and the LR3 catalog itself.
First, I understand that DNG files can have embedded keywords and other metadata -- and 95% of my files are CR2 files that I bring into LR3 as DNGs and keep them as DNGs.  So I am NOT using raw files with sidecar files.
But where I'm confused is the "automatically write changes into XMP" LR3 catalog option and how it relates to JPEG files.
I was of the understanding that if I make changes in the develop module (eg. contrast)  to a JPEG file (not a DNG), then these changes will NOT be saved to the original JPEG file, but will be "recorded" in the LR3 catalog.
But now If I allow LR3 to "automatically write changes into XMP"  -- will this WRITE these develop module changes (e.g. the contrast change)  to the original JPEG?  Or does the "automatically write changes into XMP" only refer to the keywords and other metadata in a JPEG file?
Thanks for any help in clearing this up,
R

So just so I have this correct with JPEGs:
1, If I make changes in LR3 to a JPEG (e.g. contrast), this contrast change is saved in the LR3 catalog.
2. I can ADDITIONALLY save metadata (keywords, etc)  in XMP data into a JPEG if I have the "automatically write xmp." settings checked or if I save it manually to the file
3. I can ADDITIONALLY save the develop settings (e.g. the contrast change I made in #1) by including the develop data in the JPEG in the same dialogue box.
But now if I opened this keyword, added contrast-adjusted JPEG in another program,  only "XMP-aware" programs would allow me to see these keywords and contrast changes.  Is this a correct assessment?
And lastly, if I do save the develop settings to the JPEG itself, doesn't that violate the "non-destructive" editing concept of LR3?
Thanks again!

  • LR3 to CS5 metadata changing

I start with a DNG in LR3. Take the photo into CS5 using Stack with Original turned on. Make changes and save the file. LR3 tells me the metadata has been changed by another software.
Does anybody know why the metadata is being updated? Do I need to change a setting in LR3 or CS5?
    Thanks for any info.

Are you using filtering (e.g. using the number of stars)?
If so the problem is that LR3 is not updating the metadata when the file is passed to PS.
Save the metadata on the original RAW/DNG before triggering the edit in PS and the rating info will show up in the TIF/PSD and you'll see it since it will match your filter.
I had exactly the same problem, only with CS3.
    Hope this helps,

  • Unable to edit dng metadata in 3. party software

    Dear sirs.
I am trying to use Picasa (3.9) face detection feature to update all my photos metadata.
It works fine with jpg, byt changes are not/cannot be stored in dng files.
I hope thats a bug that will be fixed asap.. (?)
I am using windows 7(64 bit), and Lightroom 4.1 64 bit (problem was also in 4.0, but as far as i remember not in 3.x but not sure)
Please get back to me about it being a bug, or a "feature". And if its a bug, when will you fix it.
By the way - i have also tried to edit metadata in Windows Explorer properties window, as well as in Windows Live Photo Gallery.
I DO have installed the Adobe dng codec for windows
    Kind regards,
    Tore

    OK Thank you David.
I will have to look into that.
BUT i dont think it should be necessary.
Isnt it a bug that the metadata cant be edited in any other software than from Adobe?
You wouldnt need a plugin then.
After editing the (jpg) pictures metadata in Picasa, i step back into lightroom --> Select all the pictures and click "Read metadata from files."
And bang - all the names etc written from Picasa is avaiable in jpg´s.
    - But nothing in .dng´s...

  • Metadata Confusion

In Adobe Bridge, I made entries into the Document Title and Description fields of the metadata of an image. In Lightroom v. 3.3 for Mac OS-X, the same image has metadata fields named Title and Caption, but both are blank.
    What is going on here?
FYI, the popular forum at flickr.com displays content of Document Title and Description fields of submitted images containing non-blank entries in those fields.

Jack wrote: 3 -  Some editing tasks still need PS. My close-up work often requires a focus stacking application, which accepts DNG but saves in PSD. Some other operations are still (but see 1 above) better done in PS using PSD format, but instances of that are decreasing over time.
But for most processing workflows, I'm finding LR to be clearly the best solution.
No problem with using other tools to further enhance a photo; there are instances were you simply can't do without. What's important however is that this edit should be initiated from Lightroom (Right click and Edit In, or from the Photo menu and Edit In...then select the appropriate program to perform your changes). Once changes are done save the file with the external editor and exit the editor; the modified version will appear as a new photo alongside the original one (or stacked with the original). Don't rename the photo from the external editor as otherwise Lightroom will loose track of the file.

  • DNG metadata changes not showing up

I've made development changes in Lightroom to photos on my laptop. However, they aren't showing up when I import them to my desktop (I'm not applying any import settings upon import). Any suggestions here would be greatly appriciated!

    Hi Gabe,
Another option which I use is to hook my laptop up to my network (ethernet cabled for speed, but wireless works as well) then from my master catalog on my desktop I import from the catalog on the laptop.  Like Ian's approach of saving the Metadata into the DNG file then importing the DNG files into LR, you get the same end result.  However, by importing the catalog I get the opportunity to place the DNG files in their proper, permenant location automatically and I save all the history steps of the editing I did on the laptop, which unless it was recently changed with a LR update, is lost using the import from DNG files approach.
If you use my approach, I generally delete all images from the laptop catalog, from within LR, and opt to delete files from disk AND catalog, when I am certain they are properly in the master catalog.  I hate doing edits twice on the same images by mistake

  • LR3 not writing metadata to xmp

Preferences set to automatically write changes to xmp file.  LR3 has stopped writing changes to xmp.
When I choose a thumbnail and click the "!" in upper right corner + click "Retry Metadata Export", I get this message: "Could not write metadata.  Your disk has less than 1 gigabyte of space left".
This is correct, as there is 200mb free space on the particular disk, but I would think this would be sufficient.  So question is: how much free disk space do I need for LR3 to continue to automatically write metadata to xmp?

From the message you have received and the statement made in the requirements for running LR on the Lightroom home page
    minimum1GB of available hard-disk space
it would seem likely that 1 GB is the minimum. However I would suggest rather a great amount of free hard disk space is required in order for LR to function efficiently. But the minimum is pretty clear.Once you go below this you will experience problems and not just with writing metadata to file, but writing changes to the catalog itself if that is located on a disk with less than the minimum requirements The metadata once written takes up very little space, but the process of writing it can require space on disk for temporary files etc. Just make sure you have lots of spare capacity on any drive you use with LR.

  • Minimise Embedded Metadata Confusion

I am sending images off to magazine publishers and need to be able to send them with Copyright,IPTC Creator info and caption. as far as i can tell LR has 2 pointless options when you minimised metadata on export:
    a) JPEG: Just the copyright & rights usage field. Without the owner contact details this is pointless isn't it. No caption
    b) TIFF: Copyright, rights usage, creator name, caption. However no contact details and includes all the EXIF info.
As far as i can tell I cannot use minimise metadata as always leaves out improtant things or adds things you don't want!!! Is it possible to do what I want?
    Thanks

But wont that wipe out all the metadata I want to keep for myself? Also the EXIF data will still be attached. I'm not sure why people don't want to sent this out, but guess something to do with restriciting information about how the picturew was taken.
Seems a bit odd that the minmise doesn't include creator details as well as copyright as 2 go hand in hand. Also typically anyone you send it too wants the caption. Wondered if I was being stupid!!!

  • DNG metadata problem

Until recently we have been successfully opening dng files in CS4 extended on two networked computers (Windows XP). All the latested CS4 updates have been installed. Suddenly this stopped. CS4 still opens the dng files on the computer where the images are downloaded from the camera (computer1), however when the second computer (computer 2) tries to open the files, in bridge or photoshop no success. As far as I can see the only difference is that when these latested dng files do not show any metadata (ie size or resolution) on computer 2, but this data is present when the files are on computer 1.
I've reinstalled CS4 on omputer 2 - no success and we have not changed the way we download the images from the camera memory card.
Any suggestions would be appreciated thank you.

    Thank you, but no success.
I have discovered that if I save the 01.dng in camera raw to the same location, the new file 1.1.dng opens from computer 2.
This is a fix, but not really a solution!

  • RAW + JPEG Import Settings Confusion

I recently bought a new camera which allows me to shoot in RAW and RAW+JPEG mode. I have at present set it to the latter, partially to be safe, and also for allowing quick image loading when out and about and can quickly upload the JPEG files to my ipad.
But having just purchased Aperture 3, I am really confused over the RAW+Separate import brick's choices.
I really cannot work out which is the best option,
    Both (Raw as Master),
    Both (JPEG As Master),
    Both (Separate Masters)  or
    Just RAW.
I have been reading  a book  called "Aperture 3 Portable Genius, but to be honest, it has only made things even more confusing!
Can someone please advise which are the best settings to use, and under what circumstances I would use the particular setting.
    Thanks :-)

"best settings to use" is hard to answer, since it depends what kind of photography you're doing and how you like to work.
It might be useful to understand that if you import 'jpeg as master' aperture treats the jpeg/master pair as one entity. When you edit the photo in AP you'll be editing the jpeg. If you want to get to the RAW, you'll have to choose "Set Raw as Master". Vice-Versa if you import 'raw as master'.
If you import 'both (separate masters)' you'll see both jpeg and raw in AP as 2 separate files which can be edited separately.  I've never actually used this option, so I could be wrong about that.
I guess the first thing to decide is which format you most want to work with in Aperture. If you only want to work with RAW in AP, then choose 'RAW files only'. In this scenario the only reason you're shooting raw+jpeg is for the quick upload to iPad.
Maybe it would help if I explain how/why I use pairs. I shoot a lot of architectural interiors and most of the time I work closely with an art director who needs to see what the shots are looking like as the session proceeds. I shoot raw+jpeg for this and send the jpegs to my laptop over wi-fi for review. This is the *only* reason I'm shooting pairs, as the tiny jpeg makes the journey so much quicker than the large raw and is of sufficient quality for the purpose. I have the camera set to produce the smallest jpeg possible for fastest transfer.
Back at base I'll import the raw files only. Even if I was using a higher resolution jpeg I'd still only import raw. For me it's what Aperture is all about, and unlike say... wedding photography, this type of shoot is low volume so there's no advantage in working with jpeg, and many advantages in working with raw.
Actually, I use another import option for pairs: 'matching Raw files only'. This is a huge timesaver. It means that during the shoot we can rate the photos (jpegs) as we go, and I'm only importing the raws that meet that rating. IE I don't have to import the entire shoot and try to remember which lighting set-up (for eg)  the director liked best.
Hope that helps. Also, take a look under "more like this" upper right on this page. Some good stuff in there.

  • Lightroom 5 can't write metadata to DNG files

I have converted a large number of Canon and Nikon raw files to DNG using Adobe DNG Converter (version 8.2.0.94).
Using Lightroom 5.2 I wanted to change metadata in these master DNG files.  I import the files into a catalog, select all, modify the metadata, then invoke the Metadata->Save Metadata to Files...  For many (but not all) of the files I get the following message:
"Could not write metadata.  Unknown file formats."
The DNG files reside on a Synology NAS server.  If I copy them to a local disk I do not get the above error.  But I would like to make metadata changes to the files on the NAS.
I do not have problems importing or viewing DNG files from the NAS.  Why does LR 5 have problems writing DNG metadata to the NAS?  How can I fix this?

    Thanks for replying.
The problem is definitely not one of permissions. I am accessing the NAS from an admin account with full permissions to read/write the files and directories.
I'm inclined to believe it's the second cause you propose -- network protocol causing data corruption.
It seems to be specific to writing metadata to large files such as DNG or TIFF.  I don't get errors writing to JPEG.  And it is inconsistent -- sometimes retrying fixes it.  And, oddly, sometimes I even get the error "photos have read-only access" when it's clear the permissions are OK.
On the other hand I have had no problems copying thousands of DNGs to/from the NAS -- no errors and no corruption.  So the issue seems to be an interaction between the NAS and LR when LR is updating the metadata on an existing file and the file is large.

  • APERTURE2+PHOTOSHOPCS3- DNG+JPEG - BEST WORKFLOW (+IPHOTO09 ??)

Sorry for my English (I'm Italian)
I shoot Raw+Jpeg (DNG). Keep Photos on External Drive. I like to import to Aperture directly from the External Drive. LATER I use PS to Edit Jpeg (if it is acceptable) or DNG if it is necessary to use the kind of adjustment you only get from RAW. Than I saw the image as Jpeg REPLACEING the original Jpeg made in the Camera (Pentax K10 and K20) keeping the same file name of course of previous Jpeg and RAW. I like to use Aperture to arrange pictures and to publish on Gallery or with iWeb.
This sometimes creates some confusion: it happens that later Aperture finds more that one singe Jpeg, with same file name and (1) or (2) and so on.
Which would be the best workflow ? I would like to keep the DNG unchanged on the external drive and several Jpeg if I wish more editions.
Amd which could be the best way to separate DNG from Jpeg into Aperture ? Is it really the best solution to see them "toghether" in Aperture ??
I am also wondering if I could install iPhoto 09 and use it to organize the facies... but later ?
    What will happen with Aperture.
I know I use this software not in the best way but....
Give me a simple suggestion and I will try to follow. At the moment I am thinking to keep completely separate the DNG from Jpeg to be sure not to mix them.
Thanks for your patience and time.

  • LR3 does not find metadata from XMP sidecars that EM2 does

I use Image Ingestor. When I ingest RAW files and view them in LR3 all the metadata applied using Image Ingester II is visible in LR3. When I ingest my older JPEG files II places the metadata into a XMP sidecar in the same folder with the same name as the file. LR3 seems to ignore these XMP files as it does not show ANY of  my metadata except that from the JPEG EXIF from the JPEG file itself.
EM2 reads the XMP files and properly handles the metadata.
Googling turns up quite a few people with this issue.
My understanding is that LR3 is supposed to treat the XMP with precedence over the image file metadata but it does not seem to do this. Is there an option to be set?
    This is an example XMP

  • Xmp to DNG?

I belive when you choose (Libarary>Catalog Settings>Metadata>Automatically Write Changes Into XMP) the changes to the metadata is also written into a DNG file.
I change my photos to DNG upon import so I was looking for the setting to auto write changes to file.  Checking the box above did what I wanted, at least in LR3, but I think this should be made clear in the settings dialogue.
I know when i have made suggestions before I discovered what I wanted was already there but I just didn't find it.  I'm assuming that the DNG files contains something called XMP but it wasn't clear to me that the setting above would write to the dng file or create a sidecar file.  My suggestion is that the Catalog settings dialogue makes this clear so one wouldn't wonder what to check.  Unless I'm sending xmp files back and forth to an editor whom already has the camera raw file, which I don't, it shouldn't be expected that I even know what an XMP file is.
    Thanks.

I believe the metadata written to the DNG would be the same as written to a sidecar, BUT neither of them would be the complete set of metadata that is stored in the catalog. Specifically: Flags, VCs, collection membership, develop history, stacks plus some panel switches, are not written to the file by "Auto Write XMP", or the manual Ctrl-S operation.
Moving from LR to ACR, I do see develop settings updating in the DNG with Auto XMP on, that is good. But no a Snapshot. Using Command (control) S does update the snapshot. Interesting! There is no Develop History in ACR so I assume you are correct since Snapshots don’t appear to update with the auto XMP setting.
I suspect that the Save Metadata command for DNG might update everything expect the preview for the JPEG. It is pretty fast to operate while using the Update Metadata and Preview command takes more time for obvious reasons.
If I have this correct, with your help, I’d suggest we have three options:
    1. Auto update XMP. Provides the same update for DNG as raws with sidecar files but as you point out, doesn’t update everything. Some data is within the catalog.
    2. Save Metadata to File* (Command/Control S). Updates all (?) the other items expect the embedded preview (a size one sets in preferences). Here is where I’m not totally clear what does or doesn’t update the DNG that lives in the catalog. I’m not sure everything is necessary to update anyway (there are no VC’s in ACR or for that matter other converters so I see no need in specifying this data).
    3. Update DNG Metadata and Preview*: Saves all of the above into the DNG.
*Only accessible from Library which is kind of a limitation. It would be really nice if one could ask for option 2 and/or option 3 along with the Auto update XMP preferences for DNG users. Then as you edit your DNG, when the system is presumably idle, all that data could be updated into the DNG. Option 3 will invoke a speed hit, option 2 seems to be as quick as option 1.

  • Working in DNG - Edit in Photoshop - Rework on DNG

    Hi there,
I'm bit confused by this whole thing about DNG and editing in Photoshop for pixel based editing and so on...
Let's say I have some photos in RAW and I convert them do DNG using Lightroom, then, I do some modifications and update the DNG metadata so I don't have to export the changes to a new DNG file.
Now, there's something I need to edit in my photo, for instance, remove a person that's on my photo and I don't want it, I need Photoshop for that. How should I go in doing this? (not the actual person removal)
I mean, if I click on the photo and then on "Edit in Photoshop" I'm presented with a dialog that only allows me to edit a copy of my DNG file and I leave all the options at their defaults (TIFF, bla bla bla...). A TIF file is created alongside the same directory of the DNG file and Photoshop is opened.
How do I go and edit my file in Photoshop, save the changes and apply those changes made in Photoshop to the DNG file I was working before?
Basically, I want to keep my photos as DNG but the problem is how do I do that if I need to do some pixel based changes. I ask this because Photoshop does not allow me to save files in DNG format. And if I edit the TIF file in Photoshop and save it, back at Lightroom, I'll have 2 files, one in TIF and the other in DNG. The DNG is the original where the TIF is the edited one. However, the TIF file lost all of the original settings, for instance, I had a cropping and if I go to the DNG file I can change the cropping if I think it needs retouching but I can't do that to the TIF.
Does this mean that I should all my pixel based editing before I decide to develop my photo in Lightroom? What if I forgot or what if I only realize I need to do some more pixel based editing after starting developing my photo in Lightroom?
P.S: Sorry for the long post...

But you cannot have it both ways. It doesn't work that way, and it never will. Lightroom editing, as well as ACR editing, is stored as metadata. But once you open the image in Photoshop you are switching over to pixel editing. You are changing the actual pixel data in your image. That is why we cannot save Photoshop changes back to the DNG file or the original raw file. That is also why a new file has to be created. Lightroom just does it at the beginning when it transfers the image to Photoshop.
Everyone has their own workflow, and I'm not suggesting that you follow mine. But I do as much editing as I possibly can in ACR. I don't have Lightroom, but Camera Raw (ACR) works under the same principle. When I have done as much as I can in ACR I save my work as a PSD or TIF image, and that is the file that I use as my master for creating other versions. You just have to rethink your workflow because you cannot save Photoshop changes back to your raw images. It isn't logical, and it is not desirable.

  • To update a DNG file?????

Lightroom v1.1 has the following in its Help File----
Save metadata changes to the file manually
    * Select one or more photos and choose Metadata > Save Metadata To File.
    * In Grid view, click the down arrow icon in a thumbnail image to save (update) the metadata in the file.
Note: The Save Metadata To File command does not update metadata in a DNG file. To update a DNG file, choose Metadata > Update DNG Preview & Metadata.
    My 1st question is--
If one maintains their photos in DNG format, based on the above statement does it make ANY sense to check the option File->Catalog Settings->Automatically write changes to XMP?
Taken literally, it seems to me that LR DOES NOT write changes (either manually or automatically) to XMP in a DNG file, unless one specifically uses the "Update DNG Preview & Metadata".
My confusion comes from the process in v1.0 for DNG metadata changes. v1 would save metadata, but you needed ACR 4.X to separately update the JPG.
Which leads me to my 2nd question-
Is Adobe using Preview and embedded JPG as the same thing? I'm assuming :) that what's being updated is the embedded JPG in the DNG and perhaps also any preview in the database.
Obviously, any comments would be appreciated.

GreSep wrote: I saw another LR discussion that said that with LR 4.3 updating Capture Time would also update Date Time Digitized but it does not do so for me on my DNGs (and as of last month ALL my images were converted to DNGs).
One or two intermediate versions of LR 3 (perhaps Lr 3.6) set DateTimeDigitized when you gave the Metadata > Edit Capture Time command. But for people managing scans in which the capture time of the original image was different than the scan time, this behavior overwrote their scan times, so Adobe backed out of that change.  Before and since those versions, the Metadata > Edit Capture Time command just changes the EXIF:DateTimeOriginal and related fields in XMP and IPTC.
