LR3 resizing algorithm fails/ export sharpening question

I have a contrasty b&w image with a severe grain effect added in SIlver Efex Pro. Exporting with resizing results in a gray and washed out image.
I fixed this by exporting without resizing, and resized externally using ImageMagick and the Lanczos filter (very slightly better for my image than the Mitchell filter).
I do of course though lose the opportunity to apply LRs export sharpening which is worrying. Not sure how to replicate this using ImageMagick.  Anyone know?
Thanks,
Ian
ps Happy to supply files to anyone from Adobe who wants to look at the issue.

Bruce,
As you correctly noticed, the WxH ratio in export represents a canvas, into which the exported image is fit. Here are some illustrations on what the different settings mean:
For what you are trying to achieve, you have to crop the image to the correct dimensions before doing the export. If I had to do it, I would create virtual copies of the original image as the last step and give each virtual copy its own crop, then export the virtual copies.
Bruce in Philly wrote:
Also, when I spec a dimension, shouldn't the DPI gray out?  What am not understanding here?
The DPI resolution has no meaning for the size of the resulting image if you specify pixels in your export dimensions. But the resolution tag is written into the image, which might affect the way an image is printed, depending on the printing application.
But if you specify your export dimensions in inches or cm, the resolution together with the dimensions in inch/cm determine the size of the resulting image in pixels. I.e. if you specify 5x7" and 300DPI, your exported images size will be 1500x2100 pixels.

  • Resize algorithm

Does anybody know, what algorithm use lightroom when resize during export? I tried to compare resize by lightroom and photoshop (bicubic and bilinear) and I must say the best result for my eyes is bilinear resize used by image processor in PS.

It uses an adaptive hybrid of bicubic smoother and bicubic sharper.
There's no way bilinear is better than anything except nearest neighbor.  If you are getting that result you are being fooled by apparent sharpness not real detail.  LR uses quite powerful export sharpening which you should also apply to any algorithm you might try in PS.

  • Failed: Export process terminated unexpectedly

I'm using Quicktime Pro version 7.5 and am having problems exporting, keep getting the message:
    failed: export process terminated unexpectedly
The source files are .mov, the format (in the movie properties window)
is Sorenson video 3 and I'm simply trying to export as H.264, making them smaller to upload to the web (they are typically about 600MB in size and I'm trying to get them down to 60 or 70 MB) I've tried exporting to other formats (mp4, H.263, Sorenson video 3 etc) and ironically the only one that seems to work is windows media using flip4mac (standard settings)
It's frustrating - why can't I export a quicktime movie to a smaller quicktime movie using Quicktime Pro?!
I notice there are a couple of similar questions posted - neither seem to have been answered so any advice would be gratefully accepted

  • Exporting Each question to LMS

    Hello,
Is there a way that we can export each question within a
captivate presentation to a LMS system. I do know that we can
export the results pass/fail etc.. Our issue is that we can't view
the errors in the questions or be able to review the problems with
our learners. Any help would be great
    Thank you
    Sergio

You can set Captivate to report Interactions and Score instead of just Score.
But whether you can dig down in the LMS reporting to find out how many users chose a particular answer depends entirely on the capabilities of your LMS.  So allow it, most don't.  You might need to get a special report created for your LMS that queries the database and digs out such info.

  • Lightroom 5.6 - photos in one of my collections have all been corrupted - they all become resized after I exported them

I have recently exported two photo collections. However, one of them seems to have been corrupted. All the photos have been resized after I exported them to lightroom.adobe.com. In fact, whenever I try to open any of the images in Lightroom again they have all been resized (or cropped). Is there anyway of recovering the original edits I made. I can re-adjust the images one by one but there are over 1000!
    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi dj-paige
    Thanks for replying.
I guess "corrupted" isn't the correct term to use. The problem is that I have been editing photos in Lightroom (well over a 1,000) and then put them in two collections, one called Birds (300+ images) and the other Dragonflies (1000+ images). I then uploaded these collections to Adobe-Lightroom so that I can view them online. However, when I view the Dragonfly collection, either online or in Lightroom, they have all changed, having all been cropped beyond recognition. What I want to know is, 1) has anyone experienced this problem before and 2) is there a way of recovering the photos with all the edits that I have painstakingly made over the past few weeks. I can go through the photos one by one and change the crop so that they appear fine but there are over a 1,000 images and it would take several weeks to go through them again.
    Cheers

  • Failed export process terminated unexpectedly (10)

    Hi everyone...
I am working on a project dealing with targa sequences.. I've been doing this for months. I open an image sequence, and then I export it out as DVCPRO50 progressive 16:9, best quality... 720x480.........
Suddenly today, out of no where.. anytime I try to export anything in quicktime I get "failed export process terminated unexpectedly (10)"
I tried this with previous tga sequences I successfully converted before. I tried converting to different formats like MP4.. I get the same error no matter what I do.
I have rebooted, flashed pram.. flashed nvram... repaired premissions... nothing has changed.. I don't get it, and I am sooooo annoyed.
if anyone can help, I will love you for ever.

Use MPEG Streamclip (freebie!) and go to it.

  • QT Pro Movie to iPod: failed export process terminated unexpectedly (11)

Cannot seem to find the answer why this is happening. Trying to Export... "Movie to iPod" in QT Pro and I get the error "failed export process terminated unexpectedly (11)". I got 1 video to work, 5 have failed. No rhyme or reason..
    Any ideas?

As per this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7115716) about QT Pro not playing nice with a muxed source, I downloaded MPeg Streamclip 1.9.2 from here, http://www.pure-mac.com/downloads/mpegstreamclipdl.html, Exported to QuickTime from within MPEG Streamclip using identical settings to the source (minus the mux), and then was able to export from QuickTime with no problems. It's by far no solution, but it's at least a workaround of sorts.

  • Failed: Export process terminated unexpectedly (11)

I have about 800 small 50MB Quicktime movies. I'm trying to compress them (Export) to a more manageable size of 5MB. I have success on about half of my Export attempts. However, I am getting an error on the other half. That error is:
Failed: Export process terminated unexpectedly (11)
    Any suggestions?
I only have 1 plug in in my Quicktime Library Folder. I have tried taking that out with no help.

I have about 800 small 50MB Quicktime movies. I'm trying to compress them (Export) to a more manageable size of 5MB.
Basically your goal is a 10:1 reduction in file size. Since the file size is directly proportional to the data rate, we need to cut your data rate by a factor of 10. Since the sample file you sent had an average data rate of 1875.11 Kbps, our target data rate will be on the order of 187 Kbps. As you did not place any restrictions of the file compression format, I would normally convert to an H.264/AAC file. also, as you did not give a specific conversion application, I will use MPEG Streamclip which is free and allows batch processing -- something you may wish to consider using if you plan to attempt to convert all 800 files.
A quick check of the QT "Properties" window, determined that your original file contains Apple Video compressed video and Integer (Big Endian) compressed audio and that the audio track is three times the size of your video track. So the first step is to select our audio settings. Apple normally uses a 44.1 KHz sampling rate and 128 Kbps (64 Kbps per audio channel) for movies, I took the liberty of using a 32 KHz sampling rate at 32 Kbps for a mono channel voice narration and thus reduced your audio data rate from 1411.48 Kbps down to approximately 32 Kbps. Subtracting the 32 Kbps from our target of 187, we find we can use about 155 Kbps for our video data rate and still achieve our goal.
The next step was to test the video requirements for your particular source video by simply making a sample conversion of the Apple Video codec to the H.264 video codec without setting any specific video data rate limitations. Turns out that your Apple Video source quality is so low and the efficiency of the H.264 code is so high that it only require about 95 Kbps to convert the video. And, since using a higher video data rate of 155 Kbps will not improve the quality, there is no need to limit the video data rate at all.
Based on the our observations to this point, it appears that we can convert your original file to an H.264/AAC compressed file with a total audio plus video data rate of only 127 Kbps which is well below our preliminary 187 Kbps target. Thus when I actually converted the 18.15 MB sample file you provide, it was reduced to only 1.23 MBs which yielded an actual net file size reduction of more than 93% for this particular file. Based on this, it would appear that you can, in fact, achieve the 90% average file size reduction you originally wanted for any file that you can convert. Unfortunately, I do not know if this was one of your "problem" files or not.
NOTE: Am sending the product file to your e-mail address for your review along with a copy of this posting to the forum.

  • Export Sharpening / LR to Photoshop

I'm exporting some tiffs that will be printed by someone else through Photoshop. Photoshop doesn't seem to have a print sharpening feature the way LR does. So, do you think I should export my tiffs with or without output sharpening? (the files already have some capture sharpening) Thanks
    Michael

    Hi,
As the output sharpening remains to be an issue on LR/LR2, and the PKSharpener was mentioned above, I would like to affer an other alternative: LR/Mogrify and LR2/Mogrify written by Timothy Armes. Personally, I find that to provide much better results in both terms of scaling and sharpening in export.
Too bad that Adobe does not offer true control over the export sharpening (I would expect that to be in 300 software...), but on the other hand, good that they offer (especially in LR2) an opportunity to use export plugins.

  • Sharpening export workflow question

I have a sharpening workflow question. Say I have pictures from a portrait session I just finished. I have to send 10 pictures the client ordered to a print lab and I also will make some small facebook sized pictures and upload them to my business facebook page. The level of sharpening needed for large prints (I upload to print lab as RGB JPEGS) and sharpening needed for the very small sRGB facebook-sized pictures is different. In Lightroom I have the option to set the sharpening on export and have a bunch of presets that alter the export size, color space, sharpening, etc(WHCC print lab, facebook, Client CD, etc). I don't see how to do that in Aperture. I see they have the option if you have a printer, but not on normal export.
For those of you that have to export batches of pictures in multiple different sizes (with different levels of sharpening), what is your workflow? I could use some photoshop droplets/actions after Aperture export but I was hoping there was a way to avoid the extra step. Am I overlooking an export feature? The BorderFX plug-in looks like the only other option.
Thank you in advance for time and help!

The thing is guys - Once a file is sized down it WILL lose sharpening - what we are doing is sharpening the full size RAW file or rather what the full size output would be like. Once we export a version sized down it will lose some of the 'bite'. LR has sharpening options on 'output' which is not only smart but a necessity. Adobe realizes that output for screen needs another sharpen. Apple either doesn't know or didn't bother. It makes ANY output for screen less than best.
Bear in mind that there seem to be two separate issues going on here - sharpening adjustments not being applied on export, and resizing.
As far as resizing is concerned, Aperture appears to use something roughly equivalent to Photoshop's Bicubic Sharper setting. Because of this I've never had much problem with Aperture's exports when used for the web, but obviously everyone's taste for sharpening differs which is why an option for output sharpening would be good.
Sharpening adjustments not being applied on export is a separate issue and should be reported via the feedback form ASAP by everyone who is experiencing the bug.
Now printing is another animal - I wouldn't print directly from RAW in aperture either if I'm printing small. Again, LR beats Aperture here as well since they include output sharpening for print.
Aperture has had output sharpening for printing since 2.0 came out (unless it in was 1.5). In A3 you need to turn on 'More Options' and scroll down, I can't remember where it is in A2. I don't know how effective it is as I print via a lab, but it's there and it's been there for a long time...

  • Question ON failed export pdf

Why does exportPDF continually answer enexpected error on all files tried to Word docx file?   Bought today failed all attempts so far!

    Hi David
Thank you.  The conversion succeeded after shutting down the computer,
restarting a session next day from within Acrobat Reader X version
10.1.4 and logging in to the ExportPDF software /before /selecting a
file to convert.   It was therefore a problem of not logging in first or
of having to reboot the machine, after buying your software and
resetting the password that helped solve the problem.
Hopefully this procedural order will help with others who have had the
    problem.
Please share this solution with the forum if you want to.

  • Sharpening Question

My normal workflow is adjust image in ACR and then batch sharpen, resize and convert to desired profile in Photoshop. I have the old batch operations working in Lightroom by converting the Photoshop actions to droplets and putting them in the Lightroom Export Actions folder. I have also created a develop preset to disable sharpening in Lightroom. I can now mimic my old workflow and still get the advantage of all the new RAW processing features in Lightroom. My question is - is there a Lightroom equivalent to the ACR setting of "Apply sharpening to preview images only"? At present I must turn on sharpening to evaluate the image and then remember to turn it off before exporting it. Thanks.

    Luke,
I am sooo glad I read your post. Because at least I know it can be done ... now.
AND, I love your solution to Sharpening ... and "now" I can see the value of "applying sharping to preveiw images only".
    * I have not created any Action/Droplets in PS CS2 for what I want done ... but, I am curious how you Run a action to "Save to WEB" and get it into a folder that is "inside" the current folder?
When I do a "save for web in PS CS2" the save seems to remember the last folder you saved to ... so would that not mess up a action you are running on different folders of files?
*** Making this longer than it probably should be ... but, this is what I would like to do as an action ... is it possable?
On Export * DO you EXPORT AS A 8BIT,sRGB FILE???
I would like to ... run a action/droplet ... to go to PS CS2 and Run "Portrature" Plug-in on it's own layer at 40% opasity ... then Change Profile ... make a levels adjustment , sharpen ... save as jpg (for lab printing)in a New Folder "JPG" inside the current folder ... THEN go back on History before the change in color Profile and levels change .. AND change image size , sharpen .. save for WEB in a new folder "WEB" inside the current folder.
So, when I am done ... I have two new folders inside my current working folder with ... "JPG" my profiled JPG for Print Lab ... and "WEB" for web upload.
Thank you for any help you can give this "newbie" to LR and PS CS2 actions/droplets
