LR3 to CS4 workflow

I'm running LR3 and CS4 on an iMac.
I want to take an image from LR and send it to PS as a smart object to do some local edits.
I tried going to the photo dropdown in LR and choosing edit-in, then open-as-smart-object-in-photoshop.
PS launches but the image I sent over does not appear in PS. I am expecting that it would show up in PS.
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong here? or how to get the image from LR3 to open in PS as a smart object?
Thanks
Greg

David -- when I drag the image from the filmstrip to PS, I get a message that says "could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file".
The type of file is a raw file, CR2, shot with a Canon S90.
CAn you help?

  • CS4 Workflow - Premiere -- AE/Keylight -- Premiere

In an attempt to get better GreenScreen Keys I would like to start using AE/Keylight.
(I had been using Premiere's Chroma Key or Color Key)
I like the thought of using Dynamic Link but Keylight does not register when I round-trip back to Premiere.
Anyone know how the CS4 Workflow - Premiere -->AE/Keylight --> Premiere should go?

    - "I do the entire key and composite in AEFX and export as an intermediate."
    - "do the key and export the intermediate with an alpha channel"
    What intermediate do you use?
(I think I would lean towards QT Animation +/- Alpha)
    So, I would:
    1. edit together my GreenScreen clips in PP (sometimes there are a few takes/clips/angles)
    2. export these clips as a single QT Animation file
    3. import to AE and Keylight
    4. export a QT Animation +/- Alpha
    5. finish edit in PP
    - Reason I dont use DL is that if I get the key  and /or composite correct, why would I need to revisit it from the PPRO project (and bog down my timeline).
The only thing I hate about going to AE is that I NEVER get Real-Time playback so it always seems like my AE timeling Bogged Down. It always seems like it goes 1sec/1frame. At 30fps... this can take a while.
Whereas, at least in PP I can actually play/view my edit. Only thing with DL workflow in this instance is that PP does not see/recognize Keylight.
Currently, my Keys look good... but I want them to look GREEAAAT; and AE/Keylight really does the trick.

  • Trouble opening files from LR3 to CS4, desaturation occurring.

I upgraded from LR2 to 3 a while ago, and recently, I've had an odd problem opening my lightly edited files into CS4.  I just do command E on my mac, and they open right into CS4.  When the image(s) open, they almost seem completely desaturated?  I shoot a nikon D700, raw, copy the NEF files into LR3 upon import, do light edits in LR (white balance, recovery, tone curve, some adjustment brush...) and then will open selected files into CS4 for futher tweaking.  Any idea why these images are doing this?  If I go back into lightroom and "reset all settings" and then open, the images open fine.  Help, i'm about to pull my hair out!!!
Here is a screen shot showing the image in LR (left) and then how it opens in CS4.
Thank you in advance for your help!  I'm currently running version 3.6 of lightroom and 11.0.2 of CS4

    Nope I am in sRGB.....
It has been very confusing because I can get an image to open normally in CS4 by resetting ALL the settings.... i wrote down the settings, re-set, made sure it opened with the correct color rendition/not desaturated (for lack of a better term.....), and then went through and "re-created" the image step by step, starting with white balance and on down, and opening it in CS4 every step, to see what was making the color render that way in CS4.  I think I have narrowed it down to the Nikon V4 camera profiles... because if I set my camera profile to "d2x mode1 v2" it opens normally (with all of my other lightroom edits made...) but if i simply switch to "d2x mode 1 v4" it will desaturate upon opening in cs4.
I've also had troubles like this from time to time in the past, and thought it had something to do with the adjustment brush.
Has anyone encountered this problem before??  Is it a compatibility issue with CS4 being an older version of photoshop?

  • What are the details of improved LR/CS4 workflow?

    Hi
I'm looking at Adobe's CS4 site listing improved LR workflow and integration with CS4. They mention merge to panorama, HDR etc as being improved. Given I can do this already in CS3/LR2.0 what are the improvements?
    Regards
    Michael

    >That is an improvement as it is the little things that can become tedious when in a rush to finish a job.
It was not a bug. CS3 had already shipped before Lightroom ever had the ability to communicate directly with Photoshop. When the CS3 10.0.1 update was released it included some of the necessary communication code (BridgeTalk), but not all. The links for features such as: Open as Smart Objects, Open in Layers, Merge to HDR and Merge to Panorama were not included in 10.0.1 because it predated Lr2.x. It's only with the introduction of CS4 that all of the necessary links and code became available.

  • CS4 ACR 5.7 with LR3 ACR 6.1

I'm planning on upgrading to LR3 imminently, but continuing to use PS CS4 for awhile until I can afford to upgrade my CS4 suite to CS5. So what happens when I open a RAW file that was edited in LR3 in CS4? Do I just lose the new features like lens profiles, but otherwise the rendering is very close or would I experience problems?

My question after reading through all this is a little more from the perspective of a newbie who has been using LR3B2 for a couple of months and intends to upgrade to LR3 very shortly - most likely this weekend when I have the time.  When I upgrade to LR3 (full edition) will it automatically bring ACR 6.1 with it, or do I have to download it from somewhere else.  I have already upgraded my version of Elements 8 to use ACR 6.1 - will LR3 detects its existence and know where to find it., or do I have to maintain two versions for each application.
On a related item, should I also be downloading/updating to the latest version of DNG as well - I believe that is also 6.1.  Insight please and thanks.

  • Help with LR3:  Won't open files in CS4 anymore, no changes have been made

I've searched and read that this has been a problem.  Can someone walk me through how to fix it please?  LR3 and CS4 haven't been changed, or even used for the last week.  It was fine, now today it doesn't work at all.  I try to edit in CS4, CS4 opens, but the image never appears.  I've tried rebooting, but don't understand what preference files I'm supposed to delete.  Any suggestions?

Lightroom uses the equivalent of ACR 6.5 for processing while PS CS4 can only use ACR version 5.x I believe you have the latest one. Therefore some of the adjustments you may have made in LR cannot be read by ACR 5.7. do not have PS CS 4 so I cannot check why it is not working when you select open anyway. Have you recently updated LR.

  • How can I make a autocad dwg drawing into a rendering in cs4?

I'm taking an autocad file of a product into illustrator/photoshop cs4 workflow to create a rendering quality type graphic....
Is there a good tutorial anywhere, or will anyone be willing to help me through this project??
So far I have imported a dwg into illustrator, and when the cursor is on the gray lines (I made them that way in autocad), a blue line appears, and "path" shows up... those gray lines are a bit larger than what I think I will need... what is going on?
That is where I am at.... I need help from here...

<i don't know what's going on with your file. i get a lot of pdfs from autocad with layers intact. maybe someone else on here knows.>
I am not sure anything IS wrong with my file. my PDF does have all the layers intact. The problem is getting Illustrator to read those PDF layers...
    1) Pt to mm font conversion:
Thanks for the font clarification. What exactly is the conversion between pt (which i belive is "points" on the pica system, correct?) and mm?) In Illustrator, if I select a 10pt stroke, it converts it to 3.528 mm. And if I select 3 pt, that's 1.058 mm. However, I went online to some sort of font converter website and it said that 3 pts = 1.0542 mm and 10 pt = 3.5141 mm. So what's the converstion. Btw, here is an interesting website that explains the different font types: http://www.oberonplace.com/dtp/fonts/point.htm
Even if i set the units to mm, i noticed that the items ins the stroke drop down list are still in "pt". How come Illustrator doesn't have the increments in mm?
About selecting everything on one layer - if i click the circle it says "click to target, drag to move appearance." what does that mean, what does the appearance refer to besides opacity? And if i click anywhere to the right of that circle, it says "indicates selected art (click to select art)." I assume that the triangle in the upper right hand corner of the layer just means that layer is current)
    2) Pen tool:
Your tip on using the "join" command while using the pen tool is GREAT. thanks. that totally helps me. and it's control + j on a PC. what is the difference between the pen and the pencil tool? y do u recommend pen over pencil?
    3) pc3 extension
Can you please tell me more about this? When and where is should the pc3 extension be used? What is difference exactly between Adobe PDF and Adobe PDF.pc3? What are alignments?
any other tips on how to color quickly and efficiently?

  • InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (mac) not working

My client and I are trying to establish an InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (Mac) workflow. Neither of us has ever used InCopy and we are all getting frustrated now that our first production cycle has come and gone and the client is not recouping the money they invested on this software. Our trial system was successful for awhile and then it just stopped. The client says she can't open the icma/icml files and they need the indd file. So I send a new batch of files with the indd included and still no luck.
I'm saving the assigments like I've been saving in our initial trial run. In ID I go to Incopy > Export > Add all Stories to Assignment. That creates the content folder and the .icma files. I zip everything and send it off via email attachment.
Is there something I am doing wrong? Something my client needs to do? I prefer not to have to send the indd file. Should I have to do that for them to edit in Incopy? I appreciate any advice. Thank you.  Lynn

Don't zip the files, that won't work.ID/IC is meant to work on a local server w/local staff. For a remote workflow you have to use a special technique.
After you create the assignment, use the Package for InCopy command in the Assignments panel. That creates an ICAP file that you send to the client.
When the double-click the ICAP file, it unpacks (it's like a zip file) on their computer and the assignment opens in InCopy. They work on the stories, and when they're done, they use the Return for InDesign command in *their* Assignments panel menu. That creates an IDAP file that they send to you.
When you open the IDAP file, it unpacks, looks for the INDD file (be sure not to rename or move it in the meantime), and updates the stories w/the editors changes.
Those are the broad strokes. It's covered more thoroughly in the online help file of both ID and IC ... you *and* your client should read up on it. And I cover it very thoroughly (4 videos ... Chapter 15) in my online Lynda.com tutorial on the CS4 workflow:

  • LR3 weird saving problem in "edit in"photoshop

If i "edit in" photoshop and click save it saves as  TIFF , which is what I have set up in the preferences.  This works fine.
But sometimes I dont want to save a TIFF, sometimes I want to make a PSD file when I am working on layers.  So I click "SAVE AS" and make a PSD file.  This works fine.
BUT here is the problem..... now I am working on a PSD file.  At the top of the window it say filename.psd on the window so this is definitely a PSD file.  But if I click "save" , instead of saving my PSD file it creates turns it into a TIF !!!!! whyyyyy??? It is soo annoying.  So evey time I want to save my PSD file I have to go "Save As" PSD and then put the same file name as the one before and then it gives you the innevitable error message that the file already exists and do you want to overwrite it.
I appreciate that initially when you open a file in photoshop that clicking Save should create whatever file type you specify in the LR3 preferences.  But if you manually select a different file to "save as" when you are in photoshop, Lightroom SHOULD NOT override your decision and still continue to create a TIFF.  This has to be a bug ?
It doesnt even give you a warning one minute you are working on a PSD file and then my reflex action is to hit command+S every five minutes or so to save my changes as i edit the PSD file.  But as soon as I do that it turns it creates a TIFF of the file and now all of a sudden i'm working on a TIF and my original PSD file i created is not being updated at all.

I am having the same exact issue using LR3
PS CS4 running on Vista.  Have already changed default file format to
.psd but Photoshop seems to be spontaneously creating these .tif files when i'm trying to work with .psd files.

  • CS3 to CS4 Export Issues

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded to PP CS4 and I after some initial quirks it seems to be running fine.  I just setup my first project and the source video files are 800x600 and I am choosing a custom format for output (same 800x600).
What is really getting me is that in CS3, I found it was much easier to render out projects and now with the separate "renderer" I have no clue as to why my renders really look awful.  The text is blurred and the colors are reduced to something awful, pixelated and "spotty".
I have tried to crank up the render settings but the files sizes seem relatively small with poor quality.  Even when PP was estimating a file size of 600mb, I really only got 12MB out of it.
I have also tried different formats using compression and no compression and it's all the same...just garbage.
I have used Premiere from just when it was called Premirere Pro all the way up to CS3 and I have not experienced this before.
Any ideas if I have some kind of corrupt install or something?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eugene

In fact, I am hoping it's operator error.
I am using Win7, 32 bit on a laptop with an integrated video card since currently I am traveling.  However, so there is no confusion, before I left, I had the same issues on a Vista, 64 bit workstation with an i7 processor and dual SLI nVidia GTX9800 cards.
Also, I had CS3 on a 32 bit machine and when I rendered out of there...no problems!
So, the sequence is only about 24 seconds long and all layers are 800x600 png files that were rendered out of 3DS Max.  However, I have some title screens that were done in PP and they suffer from the same fate.
I choose FIle->Export->Media and the export menu settings shows up.
I choose Quicktime and use custom settings.  800x600 with H264, Field type set to Lower Fist, 30 fps, square pixels (1.0) and maximum bitrate 144,000
File size is shown as only 3mb.  When I would render something like this out of CS3, the file size would be hundreds of megabytes with H264 and I would always go back and recompress and get really good quality.
I am very new to the CS4 workflow, so I am wondering if there is somekind of preference setting or otherwise that is causing my issues.
    Thank you,
    Eugene

  • Workflow for CC from PP. - ideas?

I'm interested in CS4 workflow is to link project from PP -> AE for keylight and colour correction.
I've played with it this afternoon and have mixed feelings ...
    What do people prefer:
Edit in PP then dynamic link sequence to Ae and grade a whole sequence, retaining the live link to PP.
Edit in PP then C&P or import into Ae losing dynamic link but retaining seperate clips for individual correction.
I can't predict which may produce the most flexible/efficient results in the long haul.
The dynamic link appears to be a bit half baked for me so far, working well in some directions some of the time.
Any thoughts and experiences would be gratefully recieved.
    Thanks.

    I would go with:
"Edit in PP then C&P or import into Ae losing dynamic link but retaining seperate clips for individual correction"
    for 2 reasons.
    1. if you have any fades between scenes with different CC, you need to have done the CC before the fade.
    2. normally you will want to apply the same CC to every occurance of a certain clip. If each clip is on its own layer, this will be much easier.

  • Merging photos to Panorama from LR4 to CS4 ?

When merging photos (RAW files) from LR3 in CS4 then all the modifications done to the photos (files) are reconized in CS4 and the Panorama has the same appearance in respect of exposure and color parameters.
When merging photos (RAW files) from LR4 in CS4 then the modifications done to the photos in LR4 (files) are not reconized in CS4 and the Panorama has the appearance of the untreated photos, same as imported. CS4 does not recognice, implement the LR4 modifications !!
I need first to export the photos to an other format and then merge them so that the LR modifications are implemented
Why that suddenly ?? This is a step back

Probably because the version of ACR in CS4 is two versions behind the raw processing engine used by default in LR4? So, I assume you're using PV2012 in LR4 (e.g. with the new basic panel sliders), but ACR 5.7 can only recognise PV2003 and PV2010, and is therefore not able to correctly render the images as per your develop settings. (If you're not using PV2012 in LR4 however then it's a bit of a mystery...)
As you've discovered, the only way around this is to first use LR4 to render the images to TIFF/PSD, and then subsequently load them into CS4 for panorama stitching. The alternative would be to use PV2003/2010 for the raw images you wish to stitch together, but that would mean missing out on the superior PV2012 rendering.
If you upgrade to CS6 this will cease to be an issue.

  • Editing in external editor: Save back as JPG and (auto-) add to library

I want to use external edit (in my case: Adobe Photoshop Elements) for editing features not available in LR3 (for example: skew) and easily save back as JPG. The source in LR3 is a DNG-image.
LR3 offers easy workflows out-to-external-editor>back-to-LR3 if you save back as TIFF or PSD.
But, I didn't find any easy or not extremely clumsy way to saving the edited photo back as JPG to LR3 and having it organized "close" to the original/source-DNG (preferably stacked).
    Any ideas out there?

Thanks for the suggestion! If have taken your answer to dig into my problem for just another time - with positive result.
The 'save as TIFF file' option in PSE after image export from LR opens a detailed dialogue box offering amongst others 'jpg compression' within a TIFF-container (never realized this before, never heard about this concept, my fault). So my goals are met: Having an efficient process to finetune some images in PSE, having the results automatically stacked in the LR library module and having a considerable lower file-size footprint as compared to e.g. Photoshops native or TIFF with zip compression.

  • Using HD Footage in SD Project

I have an old SD project for a set of video instructions that needs to be updated. Most of the old SD footage is still good, but I do need to reshoot a few scenes at the moment. I'd like to shoot the new stuff in HD and mix it in with the old SD footage. Eventually the whole thing will need to be redone in HD, and I'd like to begin accumulating HD foootage now.
The SD footage was shot about 5 years ago with a cheap camcorder, but looks pretty good. I've experimented with a new JVC Everio 1080i camcorder that shoots crystal clear video to hard disk in AVHCD format. Whenever I view the AVHCD files the quality is great. I experimented bringing in those files into my SD project. I set the magnification so that I will keep all of the vertical resolution and lose a bit on the sides when the 16:9 video is reduced to 4:3. The video was shot so all of the action was in the middle of the frame, so I can afford to lose the sides. Since I'm reducing 1080 lines of vertical resolution to 480, I expected to have at least SD quality as a result.
When I rendered the video, I was very surprised to see that the new HD video looks *much worse* than the old SD video. It seems that CS4 cannot de-interlace video very well. The video from the HD source are incredibly bad in quality, and the video from the cheap, 5 year old SD camcorder look great.
I originally did these videos in Premiere Pro 1.5 and had a very easy time of it. Premiere CS4 has so far been a real disapointment. The resulting video is of very poor quality and the program crashes quite a bit, which was never a problem with 1.5.

I've got a couple of tutorials on my web site that deal with scaling HD footage down to SD resolution.  One is about an all-CS4 workflow.  Here's a link:
