You need to download and install LR5 (or install from the CD), then open LR5. It will ask for your serial number and then ask if you want to upgrade your LR3 catalog (say YES).

  • LR3 to LR5 upgrade, import questions

I upgraded from LR3 to LR5 and ona separate computer, copied all my images onto a separate new external and now want to upload to 5, but not all my images. Can I organize on my Lacie and them import them with complications?

Do you want complications? If you take the time to organize your images before you import them into Lightroom it will make life much simpler. I suggest using one master folder with a logical (for you) subfolder structure.

    Hi Kenton,
Adding to what James mentioned, this stands true for both Lightroom and Photoshop. In other words, you don't need to necessarily install the previous versions but while installing the latest versions, in this case Lightroom 5 & PS CS6, you will need the serial keys for previous versions as well along with the current ones.

  • $99 update from LR3 to LR5: worth it?

I just received an email offer from Adobe through Adorama to upgrade my LR3 to LR5 for $99. Is there much improvement of the latest version over the older one? I also use Photoshop Elements 10, and my uses for LR3 are quite simple and i don't use the advanced features except the stuff on the right side under "Develop" I would appreciate if someone could enumerate what the upgrades in LR5 consist of.

The biggest difference in develop module: Lr4 & 5 feature a newer process version: PV2012.
With PV2012 you can get better quality images, in some cases immediately, but in most if not all cases after paying your dues on the learning curve.
PV2012 automatically recovers highlight and shadow detail from the far reaches, which you can make use of, or send it back from whence it came, so to speak.
Also, new clarity has more kick with better quality results when used properly and in the right contexts. Highlight recovery is much better, and shadow lighting is better too.
There are other improvements too, like:
    * Radial gradients.
    * RGB channel curves
    * Longitudinal CA correction, and fringe correction that actually works .
    * Automatic lateral CA correction.
    * More adjustments can be applied locally, like white balance, noise reduction, and highlight/shadows.
    * Distraction removal of arbitrary shaped objects, not just dot spots.
Wild horses couldn't drag me back to Lr3 .

  • Lr3 to lr5 file upgrade

I had lr3 & just installed lr5.  Only the files in one catalog automatically upgraded.  How do I change the others?

    Wilbam wrote:
Do you open the catalogs in lr5?
    Yes, of course.
When you upgrade a prior version catalog to a new version, e.g. an LR3 catalog to LR5, you should only get in the new catalog exactly what's in the prior version catalog. So if you are getteing a lot of "!" marks in LR5, that likely means that if you open the LR3 version into LR3 you should be seeing "?" marks on the images showing "!" in the LR5 version. Do you?

  • Updating from LR3 to LR5 and future switch from PC to MAC.

Hi, I currently have LR3 and am going to buy a new student version of LR5 (so not an upgrade).  Is there anything I should know about transferring over my catalogs? When is it safe to delete the LR3 version so I don't lose any catalogs from LR3?
Also, I currently use a PC but in the future, I want to switch to a MAC.  It's my understanding that if I purchase LR5 now, I can download to 2 computers.  Do these downloads expire?  If I download now to my PC now, can I then use the 2nd download for a MAC in say, a year?

As far as transferring catalogs goes, your best bet for getting answers is probably to ask in the Lightroom forum (http://forums.adobe.com/community/lightroom).  Folks there are more like to have recent hands on knowledge of catalog matters.
The downloads do not expire though they might not always be readily available from the Adobe site (there is an alternative site).  Currently, however, Lightroom is one of the few applications which Adobe does retain links to download older versions.
You can download to any number of machines, but you are only allowed to have the software activated on two machines.  You can deactivate and activate as you need to, so if in a year you want to, you can install and activate on another machine.

  • Is it possible any longer to upgrade from LR3 to LR5 without subscribing to Creative Cloud?

Is it possible any longer to upgrade from LR3.5 to LR5 without subscribing to Creative Cloud? I am not interested in a CC sub at this time.

You can click Buy on this page to purchase LR5 without subscribing:

First, though, download and install LR 5.6 from the Adobe Updates page and make sure LR5 will run on your computer:

  • When ugrading from LR3 to LR5 via the cloud, must I install LR4 in the process?

When opening the Adobe Application Manager, Lightroom 4 is available, not 5. Do I have to transition through 4?

I am not a subscriber to the cloud but each and every Lightroom update is the full software package, there are no incremental patches. As far as I am aware when you are a new subscriber you are entitled to the LR 5 version and you do not update any earlier package. If you have a trial or a perpetual licensed version of LR 5 already installed on your computer then you will need to uninstall this before the Cloud Application Manager will allow the Cloud LR version for install. Uninstalling an existing versions will not remove your personal files or settings.

You have to change the photo to Process Version 2012.
Under the histogram in the develop module is a Lightning Bolt icon. Click on it.

  • Importing all images without duplicates - LR3, LR4, LR5

Howdy. I've been using Lightroom 3 for a couple years.
Recently, a friend passed away. I went to look for photos of him and realized that many were missing. I've since found a few of them on Facebook, and suspect that some are lurking in old backups (of my files in general, not necessarily LR backups) on various hard drives. Things are desperate enough that I want to do an Import on *every single freaking image* on my 7 external drives and my internal drive, and yes, go through and weed out the little non-photo images that the system finds in all sorts of places on my hard drive.
But! Despite having clicked the check box for "Do not import suspected duplicates," I see that it wants to import thousands of them. Some are photos that I recognize from browsing through my master catalogue -- images I already have. Others are photos that haven't yet been imported -- but when the system finds multiple copies of those files (most of these from my IMAP mail attachment spools) it wants to import all of them, even though they are the same photo and often the same filename. We are talking tens of thousands of pictures, so I'm not keen on going through by hand and un-clicking all these duplicates.
Anyone know if a later version of LR can do this better?
Also, if later versions of LR help the user handle duplicates that are *already* in a catalogue? I've bought some scripts/plug-ins that help do this work, but it's still multi-step, very time consuming, and dodgy.
My needs are that of an amateur photographer who doesn't need much technical stuff (e.g. i have no idea of the ISO or the lens type of any of my photos, and am unlikely to start following that information later). I do need organizational help and I love the ability to develop quickly. But I've been constantly vexed by trying to get all the photos in the right place. An "expert" I hired to help me set up on LR recommended having different catalogues for different projects. Later, the entire Interweb pretty much shook its collective LR finger at me for having multiple cats, and so I made one big master catalogue. And since then, things have been pretty screwed up. I'm not sure whether I should bother to upgrade, or simply leave LR and try my luck at something else.

No version of Lightroom has tools to find or remove duplicates, and the import dialog has the same feature that is supposed to prevent duplicates from being imported. Lightroom considers a photo to be a duplicate if it has the same file name, capture date/time and file size.
So upgrading Lightroom does not help in this task.
However, you might want to see if this plug-in works for you (note: I have not tried it)

Trying your luck at something else ... in my opinion, if you are not organized using Lightroom, then simply moving to different software does not improve your organization. And there really isn't any "luck" involved. Improving your organization involves YOU putting in the work to become organized. The software is merely the tool that you use. And so any photographic management software will give you tools to improve your organization. It's really up to you, the software is not the problem.

  • LR3 and CS3 integration...

    Hi All,
You know, if i make a big edit in LR and then go to edit in CS3 i don't have any problems.
However, i have been sharpening and applying noise reduction today and when i then export the work out of LR the changes are not there. I am using the 'edit with Lr adjustments' and whatever but as soon as i look at the same image in CS3 the changes do not appear to be there. In fact they definitely aren't. If i flick back to LR the image is adjusted...Weird.
    Any Helpers out there ?!?
Been at it all day and am convinced these changes are not carrying  through to Cs3. Is there another way of getting the image exported perhaps...i just need to get it into a file so i can use it 'at will' without having it 'locked' in LR.
    Cheers,
    Simon

If you set up CS3 as an external editor then LR will convert your file to TIFF before editing and you should see your changes, but then you will also have and additional file to deal with.

  • User presets not working after LR5 upgrade

Just updated from LR3 to LR5 and my user presets are not working. They are visible, but do not do anything when clicked. How do I fix this?

We have found the same thing. Patch 5 and 7 did not fix the problem. We even got a preliminary patch 8 that did not fix the problem.
We're still hoping for an EBF.

  • LR5 - when exporting and uploading to FB photos look very bad

I just upgraded from LR3 to LR5 - when I export and upload to Facebook - the photos look horrible. Very unclear. Looks like they got compressed in a strange way. I am doing everything the same way I did it in LR3 but getting differnet results. Any help would be very appreciated.

I am using LR5. So does that mean everyone using LR5 will have this problem.
When I export to my desk top they look fine. But when I send them throught eamil or through FB they get all weird looking. I am so confused.

  • Photo Elements Features / Integration

I really like BOTH PSE 8 and LR 3.    I just spent and lot of time in PSE organizing several years worth of images prior to discovering LR.  Now that I'm trying the LR3 Beta, here are some thoughts:
Bring over into LR3 from PSE:
    Integration/sharing of keywords and metadata
    Facial Recognition
    Flash slideshows
    The effects
My dilemna is if I get LR3, which tool to use to really manage all my images.
Perhaps a simliar integration of the PSE editor with LR3 as there is between the PSE Editor and Organizer, so that if I edit an image using PSE from within LR3, LR brings it back in as part of a version set.
I'm also playing with Aperature 3 on my Mac but do prefer LR.  If LR were tightly integrated with PSE that would be perfect.  If not, I'd really have to think hard about which to use, PSE or LR.
    Thanks for listening!

Did you try deleting the preference file?
The steps are explained at: http://psekb.blogspot.in/2013/03/pse-organizer-is-not-launching.html
