LR4.1 RC Edit-in PS issues

After making a few roundtrips from LR4.1 to PS 5.1 (edit-in), PS will no longer start. Have to reboot the PC to make it work.

This is a very old old issue with PS that has never been fixed (although I can remember multiple reports about it) : under some circumstances, when you "exit" PS, the main window will close but the process (photoshop.exe) will remain active (you can see this in the Task Manager). So you can't re-launch PS because only one instance of this process is allowed. You have to kill the photoshop.exe process in the Task Manager and you'll then be able to re-launch it.
This problem is hard to reproduce but I noticed that it can happen when launching PS and then exiting after a while without doing any work.

LR4 - Perferences - Edit on PhotoShop Elements Error

I updared to LR4 from 3.6 which worked perfectly with external editing. I configured LR4 to Edit in PhotoShopElementsEditor.exe. When selecting it I then get "Unexpected Error Performing Command: bad argument #1 to 'lower' (string expected not nil).
So my guess is it either doesn't like the file name (I tried several) or it doesn't like one of the default parameters being passed as I did not change any defaults. Not the friendliest error message so I could use a little help sorting it out.
I am using Win 7 64bit and LR 64bit but PSE is 16 bit but I hope that is not a problem.

The inability to invoke any external editors from LR4 is a known issue and Adobe is working on a fix. In the meantime, a temporary workaround involves installing the free trial version of PSE10 or CS5. You do not have to run these programs but merely install them on your machine. You can get more information, read the replies by Adobe reps, and add your name to the list of people having this problem at the Adobe feedback site:

LR4.1 : "Edit-In" "Open as Smart Object with Photoshop..." feature doesn't work with 32bits

Hi there,
I am running LR4.1/CS5/ACR6.7 on a Win7 64bits system.
The feature "Edit-In" > "Open as Smart Object with Photoshop..." does work Ok with raw files (.NEF).
However, when i do try to use the same feature with 32 bits .TIFF files (which are output of the LR4.1's "Edit-In" > "Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop..." other feature), nothing does happen (the Photoshop application windows does open but w.o the image that i've just selected).
I've used search engines and Adobe online help to see if there was any limit preventing the usage of this feature with 32 bits .TIF files but couldn't see such note.

I am working with very huge .TIF files (400MB), so i am wondering if size could be the main issue (although my PC has lots of HW resources).
I will explore the DNG way, a format which seems anyways to be very promising now with LR4.
In case anyone has an idea why it doesn't work the .TIF files, please shoot !

Solaris 10 Dev. Edition - Network config issue (NIC,DHCP,Can't ping router)

I am a developer getting started with Solaris 10 configuration. I recently installed Solaris 10 and have run into an issue with network connectivity.
I have done much research on this and I was able to get communiction to the internet established once, but the settings were lost on reboot.
Overview - The Solaris box is connected to a router which is acting as a DHCP server.
AMD 64 dual 2.6
nForce4+ integrated NIC
1) I am not able to obtain an address from the router. Nor do I get a respons back when I ping it. I get an IP etc if I boot into Windows so phyicial connectivity is fine.
2) Upon reboot the device nfo0 as shown using ifconfig -a has an IP of 0.0.0.0.
3) If I run ifconfig [hostname] my machine gets the ip from the hosts file, but I would like to obtain this from the router.
4) NOTE - the machine shows as active on my router, but the Solaris box cannot be reached from other computers on the networ, nor do I get a reply back when pinging the router from the Solaris box.
GOAL - reach and obtain a DHCP from the router and have the changes stick upon reboot.

Specific Steps taken:
Using the driver nfo-2.4.5 locate at http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/ I did the following.
% cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
% rm obj Makefile
% ln -s Makefile.${KARCH}_${COMPILER} Makefile
% ln -s ${KARCH} obj
where ${KARCH} is the result of `isainfo -n`, and ${COMPILER} is
"gcc" or "suncc" which you want to use to make the driver.
4. Testing
Testing before installation is strongly recommended.
# cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
# /usr/ccs/bin/make install
# ./adddrv.sh
# /usr/ccs/bin/make uninstall (for solaris7, don't remove the file )
# modload obj/nfo
# devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r )
# ifconfig nfoN plumb ( where N is an instance number, typcally 0 for first card)
# ifconfig -a ( you will see an entry for nfoN)
# ifconfig nfoN YOUR-HOST-NAME
# ifconfig nfoN ( ensure IP address is correct)
# ifconfig nfoN up ( and then you can test with ping, telnet, ftp ...)
5. Installation
After you ensure that the nfo driver is fully functional, install it.
(1) copy the nfo driver into the kernel directory
# cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
# /usr/ccs/bin/make install
If you do not test the nfo driver yet, execute the following commands:
# ./adddrv.sh
# devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r)
(2) Configure the network interface. Create and/or modify the following file:
/etc/hostname.nfoN
(3) Reboot the system.
# init 6

Thanks Alan. I worked on trying to get the NIC working again last night. I had it working once, although the settings did not perist. I can still get the device to load, but I can't communciate with the router (it's not physical because another OS can reach it.
I took your advice and tried the sys-unconfig. But I did not have much success.
I am wondering if plopping in a new PCI NIC would be the most efficient route to get the server up.
What kind of NIC do you utilize and have had success with?
I am looking at possibly a DLINK DFE-530 or NetGear FA-311. I don't need wireless at this point just a rock solid DEV box.

LR 5 - Edit in CS6 issue

Currently running iMac on OSX 10.9. Recently upgrade to LR 5 from LR 4 about indicates that I'm on version LR 5.4 and ACR 8.4. When I finish my adjustments in Lightroom and want to finish the image in CS6 I usually just go to the Photo/Edit in/Adobe Photoshop CS6, The file would then open up as a tiff in CS6. For some reason the files will no longer open up as a tiff but will stay in the raf format Nef for the nikon files or dng for others, In addition it doesn't seem as if the adjustments made in LR carried over. Also tried to open raw file directly from CS 6, Opened in the ACR processor but when finished they opened up in CS6 as net files not tiffs. I know it is not the camera format D800 as I have had not problem working with the files over the last year when I was on LR4. I just updated to LR5 and I don't recall initially having this problem. Been away for a week and now can not get the file to open up within CS6 as a tiff from either LR5.4 or from ACR 8.4 Preferences are set to open up as Tiff.

Hi John, thanks for that, I have done that but now that button is just greyed out with nothing happening. Will quit LR and close my computer and see if that solves the problem with the reset.

Has anyone solved their LR4 / Nikon D800 RAW NEF issues?

I've done a lot of reading on this topic and think I have a handle on how easily the new D800 NEF files can be corrupted by the older versions of Nikon Transfer.
When I began using the camera I accidently made the mistake of corrupting them and haven't had any issues since... until yesterday.
I photographed last night, and imported about 160 RAW NEF files onto my brand new Macbook Pro with Retina for a same day preview for the host. I transfered the images using ViewNX2 & by association it's built-in Nikon Transfer 2 utility. I used the built in SD Card reader on the Macbook which has always worked in the past. But alas!!!!! While they imported fine, LR4 can't import them and gives me the error "Preview Unavailable at this Time". I should note... Nikon Transfer 2 was set to clear the card after the transfer .
Nikon ViewNX2 can see the images and I'd hoped to fix the issue by just converting them to JPEG's but, no bueno. It tells me it can't. This is the precise issue I can into when I accidently used the original version months ago on my iMac. But it's impossible that I have the old version on this unit. It's less than a month old and I'd downloaded the most recent version from Nikon. So I'm running under the assumption that the file is somehow corrupted.
I've seen a lot of people running into issues getting used to the new workflow requied to deal with these enormous RAW's.
Here's the all important question. After the files have an issue... is there anyway to recover them??? I can't retake them, the original shots were wiped from the card. So what do I do? At least Nikon View can see them, so I have to believe that there is some image information there.
Has anyone sucessfully fixed the issue?
Going forward I plan to just import everything directly through LR4, so I think that'll aliviate future heartburn... but what's my "undo" solution?
I know there's a lot that's been written on this topic and really appriciate the support!

BTW, I answered 14 to the bit-depth-12-or-14 question the utility asked, and it worked ok on the example corrupted NEF.
Below is what I was typing up and testing before posting, and works to extract the embedded JPG Preview, but does not actually fix the corrupted NEFs, which is a better solution. I am including it, below, for reference in case someone without corrupted NEFs also wants to extract JPGs from their raw files. It uses the same tool from Phil Harvey without his customizations to work specifically with corrupted NEFs.

I’m on a PC and you’re on a Mac but the same tool is available - exiftool a command-line program you run in terminal (on a Mac) or in a Command Prompt window on a PC:

If what you download includes a (-k) then remove it by renaming before attempting to run the command, below. On Windows I would rename exiftool(-k).exe to exiftool.exe without the (–k) part. The (-k) tells exiftool to display the exif information by default if you drag-and-drop to it. While this is normally useful, for the purpose of extracting JPGs from NEFs this might be confusing so I’m suggesting to rename the executable before using it.
Here is the command-line to extract the fullsize JPG from the NEFs and then copy the metadata tags from the NEF to the newly written JPG:
.\exiftool -b -JpgFromRaw -w %d%f_%ue.jpg -execute -tagsfromfile @ -srcfile %d%f_%ue.jpg -overwrite_original -common_args --ext jpg .
The above command assumes both the exiftool executable and all the NEFs are in the current folder. The current folder is designated by a single period both at the very beginning and the very end of the command-line. If exiftool is in a different folder, then supply that path instead of the initial period, and if the NEFs are in a different folder, substitute that folder-name for the final period. The final period has a space separating it from the preceding –ext jpg.
It is also assumed that only NEFs and the executable are in the current folder. If there are other files, they may confuse things so you might want to move things to a temporary working folder, and I’d suggest working with a copy of the NEFs just in case something goes haywire, you’re not overwriting the originals, corrupt as they may be.
For reference, the above command-line was simplified from a more complex example that didn’t quite work with your file, one that conditionally extracts either the full-size JPG or the tiny JPG-thumbnail. The example is the last one in the Copying Examples section, here:

Oracle Database Express Edition 10g Download Issue

Hi everyone. I just downloaded the freeware Oracle Database Express Edition without any apparent problems. However, when I attempt to go to the Express Edition Homepage, which is location http://127.0.0.1:8080/apex,
I get the message that my Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. (It can, however, display other pages.) I cannot understand why this is the case since I successfully added Web site 127.0.0.1 in my Control Panel (as specified in the instructions.) Also, the instructions stated that HTTP port 8080 was the default port, unless my system said that this was not available (which it did not.) I also tried rebooting, which did not make a difference. Help!

At the top of the page you are reading, there should be links like "Forum Home » Database » Database - General". The middle one will get you to a list of all Oracle forums and after the first 5, the rest are alphabetical - XE is pretty far down that page.
(You might also note that there is an Installation forum next to this one. That might be better suited to the task than the 'catch-all' general forum.)
The most common issues are related to not preparing the operating system properly. For example, if you use a laptop you probably use DHCP to get a different address from the various sites you connect to. However, Oracle works as a server and depends on having a well known address. In fact, it tends to bind the IP address at install into it's configuration files. Therefore it is critical to use the loopback adapter in such situations.
Other issues are dependent on the actual OS into which you install. For example, Ubuntu (Linux) has very differnet install philosophy as Red Hat / Fedora, and requires a different install technique. Then again, on Windows, it is nearly impossible to install anything Oracle on a Windows 'Home' OS, and XE generally has not even been tested against Windows 7.
Other common reasons include anti-virus; firewall; not having appropriate operating system level permissions; in Windows - using a Domain-based userid instead of a local administrator; and just general finger issues.
Express is considerably different in the install behaviour and runtime behaviour. For example. it uses RPM and MSI instead of Oracle Universal Installer. It does not include Java in the database, which limits a lot of functionality. And it uses the built-in PL/SQL Web Gateway instead of any external HTTP server. As a result, it can be quite a shock to mmany of the regular inhabitants in this forum.
I strongly encourage reading the documentation for XE. In particular, reading the install doc. Start at http://tahiti.oracle.com and look for the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Express Edition documentation. (Just below the Oracle Database 10g Release 2 documentation.)

Edit in Photoshop issue

I just upgraded to LR4 and CS6 on a MAC running 10.7. When I edit the image in LR and click Edit in Photoshop, Photoshop opens but never actually opens the image. Please help.

Lee Jay, I want the 2nd to do the exact thing the first does. As best I can tell, I have them setup identical and the first computer is not doing creating/saving files with a -Edit.tif in the file name.
In any event, my bottom line is I want to choose "Edit in Photoshop CS3", have the file open in CS3 ready to edit, but not create a new file on my hard drive with a "-Edit" in the file name. I don't want anything automatically saved on my hard drive until I choose to save in CS3, and will likely save as a .jpg.
So how can I accomplish this?

ALV GRID edit mode keyboard issue

Hi,
I have created a program that displays an ALV GRID.
From the Layout I said to edit in edit mode the ALV Grid.
In the menu toolbar I exclude the button 'cut - copy -paste and delete line'.
When I run the program I see that these buttons are not displayed --> OK.
BUT my problem is: if I use the keyboard then the ALV Grid manages these actions.
For instance. I select some lines and press the key DELETE on the keyboard --> the lines are removed and that is not that I expect because I removed this action from the toolbar.
For the cut - copy and paste it's the same.
Do you have a solution for me --> intercept an event or change the function keys or ....
I would like that the ALV Grid does not manage the keys delete, CRTL-C, CRTL-V in edit mode.

I was not aware of this. So, I recommend you to try this:
At the event "before_user_command" you can terminate the process by resetting the ALV user command.
e.g.
 CASE e_ucomm .
 WHEN '&INFO' .
 CALL METHOD gr_alvgrid->set_user_command
 EXPORTING i_ucomm = space.
 ENDCASE .
This code within the event overrides the '&INFO' function and terminates its process. For cut and copy, you can find out ucomm values by putting a break point inside the event and tracing the value of "i_ucomm".

Server 2012 Standard Edition network teaming issue at bootup

I have a Windows server 2012 x64 standard edition server (not R2) using two Intel I210AT nic's on an ASUS P9D-X motherboard. They are setup in a team using the Microsoft teaming. No special options, latest updates and the latest Intel drivers.
The team is setup in switch independent mode and connected with quality cat6 cables to a Cisco 3600 switch. No special options on the ports of the switches, no LACP or trunking, just standard unconfigured ports.
The problem we have is when the server is rebooted the team will not communicate with the network. If we unplug one network cable communication begins. We can then plug the cable back in and both
ports work and communicate normally.
This issue is serious as it requires physical action on every restart.
We have tried deleting the team and recreating it and we get the same results. Is there some specific change that needs to be made to make this work or is this possibly a known bug?

May be problem on Cisco side, Cisco is very clever, could assessed network traffic as a problem and close the port. When OS is running, then NIC Teaming working fine, but when you boot up server, "BIOS not running with NIC Teaming", in this moment
may occur problem on Cisco side.
I recommend, if you use Cisco, configure NIC Teaming in LACP mode and configure your two ports on Cisco to LACP, it's better way.

Editing Cells - Simple Issue, but Confused

Simple issue, but I can't seem to figure this one out in Numbers. I'll do my best to explain in words here.
Let's say I store the following dollar amount in cell A1 = 1264. The number is formatted to dollars. Therefore A1 is presented as $1,264.00. All is well up to this point.
Okay, now let's assume I click out of the cell completely. Now let's say I wanted to add $250.50 to this amount in cell A1. When I go to the formula bar to add in the $250.50 it's requiring me to remove the dollar sign and comma out of my $1,264.00 number in order to complete the computation. Is this normal? I never had to do this in Excel. My thought was that I should only need to include an equal sign at the beginning of the formula (in other words, there shouldn't be a need to remove the dollar sign and comma every time, right?).
Just wanted to make sure that I'm not missing anything overly simple (which I'm sure I am).
Any help is greatly appreciated! I'm really enjoying my trial version of Numbers thus far.

There is another way to remove each comma and dollar sign, one that will work on multiple cell at once if needed. Select the cells that you want to clean-up and using the Cells Inspector, change the format from Currency to Number and then click the Thousands Separator checkbox to deselect it. Then all that remains is to add the equal sign when you go in to edit the content by changing your input to a formula. Then if you still want the value to be displayed as currency, change the format back.
I'm not saying that this method is better, but may be worth a try if your are backspace/delete averse.

Photoshop Elements 10 Costco special edition a scanner issue

I downloaded the new software as directed. However, I lost the ability to import directly from my Canon scanner/printer.
My old Photoshop Elements 6 allowed me to do that through ScanGear. Is there a way to scan directly into
Elements 10 without having it go to I-photo or desktop? When I selected Photoshop Elements 10 as a destination, it didn't
end up there. With this big upgrade in features, there has to be a way. I have done all the disconnecting printer, deleting it and reinstalling it. Opened the help menu and followed it but it didn't help. What is weird, I can print from Elements 10 so it recognizes the Canon as a printer but not a scanner. Any suggestions?

I just uninstalled PSE10. I couldn't see where there was actually an application for PSE10 in the application folder. All I had was a file (4k). That is why PSE editor didn't accept any photos or allow me a way to get photos to it when I tried to set up the editor preference. My system is probably messed up after trying for two days to upgrade software for the Canon printer, the twain I had was too old and it couldn't get upgraded. I have two I-Mac one in Az. and one in Wa. Both are about the same age and have printer/scanners about 3 years old. If I have the twain issue with both computers because of the new PSE software, I need to buy new ones which will not justify keeping PSE10. Everything I tried through your diligent return of emails failed. I am puzzled, as I never have had any problems with your software. I love it. I have used it for collages (Scrapper's Guide and my own creations, etc.) I have restored old photos, made cards. I have 20 thousand photos on my Mac. in Wa. and I have never had an issue dragging a photo into Elements 6. I was looking forward to your new features. I guess I am not mentally ready for the installation issues anymore. You don't suppose there is a problem because it is a special Costco edition. I never got that far. Two pictures dragged into your program and now it has an operational error... nothing went into it... no import.

LR4.x "Edit in" CS5 compatibility - ACR 6.x vs. ACR 7

So I am struggling with whether I need to upgrade to CS6 now that I have LR4 to preserve 100% LR-ACR compatibility. Can someone explain what I would lose if I didn't? Would I have to render to TIF every time I wanted to edit from LR4 into CS5? I've also read that ACR 6.7 would minimize the impact, rendering the LR4 edits straight into CS5, but that there's still something missing that only ACR 7 can address (open as Smart Object, perhaps)? Can someone clarify the compatibilities and impacts of not upgrading? Thanks.

That's because there's no such file on a Mac.
".8bi" is an extension that denotes a Windows file, which would not belong in a Mac—ever.
On a Mac the correct Camera Raw plug-in is labeled "Camera Raw.plugin".
Tangentially, I recommend downloading and using the free Easy Find utility, which will find any file on your Mac, including many that are off-limits to the intrusive, useless Spotblight.
