LR4.1 RC2 Remove Chromatic Aberration excellent,
but slows down all processings of that image,
even Navigator is crawling...
Same for you ?

I had unchecked Detail to see more precisely the effects of
the new CA sliders.
Should be easy to correct !

  • Lr 5 Remove Chromatic Aberration

    Hi,
I've noticed the following with Lr 5 "Remove Chromatic Aberration": it's not only color aberration that disapears (e.g. Red) but all Red transition edges (from highlights to shadows) of the same hue that change to Grey (using either process).
Am I doing something wrong? Have anybody noticed the same? With Lr 2 I have never noticed this situation: when elimination chromatic aberration (Red / Blue | Cyan / Yellow) and chosing Highlights or All, it was only the aberration that goes off. Can anybody help with this?

Here's some screen shots with the problem (is defring) but if I don't change the hue and amount I won't have the aberration corrected.
    Camera: Canon 5DMarkII
    Lens: Canon 24-70mm f2.8
    file type: RAW
    OS: OS X Mavericks
    Image 001: no correction
Image 002: corrected (as you can see in CA amount and hue sliders)
Image 003: problem (man's face in shadows / highlights transition)
    Image 004: problem enlarged

  • Would like some assistance with removing chromatic aberration from images . In using the slider tool only some of aberration is removed tried brushing in but not successful. After magnifying image 1005 i can still see some slight purple fringing .

Can anyone assist me in using chromatic aberration tools in removing purple fringing completely from images?  I have had limited success in using the slider , but in zooming in at 100% I can still see slight purple fringing in image . i tried brushing in but that did not seem to remove purple fringing completely.

  • How the best way to use the defringe tool in removing chromatic aberration?

I am having a problem with LR 4.2 in correcting chromatic aberation.  When I try to use the "defringe tool" I receive the following error message, "Cannot set the purple or green fringe color.  Please sample a representative fringe color agian."  However, I can see the sampled pixel in the pallette and read the RGB values.  What am I doing wrong?

In this case, where the dropper doesn't work, you might have to slide the color selectors left or right to visually select the desired color. So, if for example, you have a blue fringe, you could slide the color selectors to the left so instead of surrounding purple, they now surround more blue-ish colors. Sometimes when you do this however, some areas are "corrected" from blue to something else that should NOT be  corrected. So, you have to "protect" the areas that shouldn't be corrected. This blog post explains it all: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/04/new-color-fringe-correction-controls.html

  • Chromatic Aberration Removal in LR4 is terrible

I used a manual fixed focal length penatx lens on my Canon 40D and it shows chromatic aerration in the raw file. In LR4 all you can do is check the option to remove chromatic aberration. LR4 did an awful job making it even worse. See before and after image below. The chromatic aberration should have manual controls to adjust it to one's liking. Red/Cyan and Blue/Yellow sliders should be complemented by a Green/Magenta slider in the manual section. Now that would be an improvement on LR3. I loathe chromatic aberration which is unavoidable in many cases. More control over it's removal is a definite must. LR4 has gone backwards. I don't want to have to fiddle with profiles etc to fix this. Just put the controls that were in LR 3 back and add a green/magenta slider please.

I'll try the moire brush as suggested.
I am trying to emphasise the point that the software should be moving forward. That means new tools or upgrades should avoid adding artifacts as much as possible and certainly upgrades to existing tools should not perform worse than the original tool. I have found an example here where it does with chromatic aberration removal where an artifact is formed.
It's interesting that some of the commentary above almost suggests that chromatic aberration removal should be an adjustment brush. The user could then isolate the edges that he/she wants to remove the coloured fringes from. Then there should be the ability to choose which colour shifts are required red/cyan, blue/yellow, or green/magenta.
It looks like the current tool may improve some edges while making others worse. If checking the choice of automatic aberration correction doesn't work - then one has to go to another external editor to fix the problem - not the most satisfactory result of an upgrade. I like the suggestion in another thread of having both the option of auto and manual control options - much like exposure control. Photographers like manual control of image enhancements.
I have chosen to take pictures that have extreme aberrations to test the robustness of the tool. I have shot pictures with high contrast lighting, with older cheaper glass, and with the aperture wide open. I'll try to get some pictures to Eric as mentioned above.

  • Chromatic Aberrations and ACR

I've read that Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) does a very good job of removing chromatic aberration artifacts.
I do believe that, but what specifically in ACR is the tools / sliders that will do this magic ?

It is great and a big time saver. Open a CR image in Camera Raw.  On the right just below the histogram are 10 icons with a lens being the 6th from the left.  Click on it, choose the Profile TAB, Select Enable Lens Profile Corrections, below in the Lens Profile select your Camera Make and if you are lucky your lens will be selectable in the Model pull down below.  IF not Click on the manual tab and do it the old way.  Also under the manual tab are some new geometric transforms that are sometimes useful at the Raw level.  Enjoy!

  • The chromatic aberration checkbox that should be under lens corrections is missing

The chromatic aberration check box that should be present under lens corrections is missing from my LR4 program, can anyone tell me what the problem is and how to get it back

What version of LR4 are you using? There was a change made to the CA removal process in LR4.1, and the "Remove Chromatic Aberration" check box is now under the "Color" tab of the Lens Correction panel.

  • Problems With Chromatic Aberration Removal

I've noticed a problem with the chromatic aberration removal tool in LR4 beta; it seems to make CA significantly worse in some images.  I've attached two versions of the same photo of the moon, one with the CA removal turned on and the other with it off.  There is slight chromatic aberration with CA removal turned off.  When it is turned on, there is an obvious purple cast to the left edge of the moon.  I'd be happy to email the NEF to someone at Adobe, but I'm not sure who to send it to.
Chromatic Aberration Removal turned off (box unchecked):

  • Excel 2007 Slow Opening File

We were looking at migrating to Office 2007. To verify compatibility, several key users have loaded Office 2007 on their machines. There seems to be several problems related to opening files in Excel.
If Excel is open and the user does a File/Open, files will open quickly. However, if the user clicks on a file to open it, it can take up to a minute to open. I found a fix for this on this forum. It is to add "%1" to the end of the Open command line in the defined file types for XLS files. After this worked, I found that also needs it for the New on XLT, Open for XLSX, New on XLTM, and New XLTX files.
After adding in the above fix I wanted to verify that it worked correctly by recreating the problem so I went in and removed the "%1" from all of the commands. When I tried to open a file, I got an error. So I went back into the File Types and checked the command lines. Now all of the command lines had a %1 at the end of them without the quotation marks. When I would try to delet this %1, it would now allow me to. I could remove it but when I reopened the line, it was back again. If I added the "%1" back to the end of the line it would take that and it would fix the problem again but I was still unable to remove the %1 from the other commands such as New, Print, Save As, etc. I had to Restore my system in order to remove them.
Further testing on the fix reveals that when I file is opened, it attempts to open the file twice. The first time it opens very quickly and then a minute later it opens the second time. Notice that this is the same delay that was experienced previously. It you open the file and make a change before the minute has elapsed, then you get a message stating that the file is already open and if you open it again you will lose your changes. This is probably due to the Use DDE being selected. But If I turn off DDE, then when I click on the first file, it opens quickly and when I click on the second file, it also opens quickly but if I look at the Task Manager, their are 2 copies of Excel running. If I go to the View tool bar in either copy of Excel and try to view the other window, I can not. So it appears that there physically 2 copies of Excel running. When I went back into the File Types, the Use DDE that I had unselected before is now checked again but the DDE command line is blank.
Thinking that may this was something that was surely fixed now that it is 2008 and the software is 2007, I looked for updates and found that IT had not run the updates. Loaded the Compatibility Pack and Service Pack 1 and high hopes that this would correct the problems. After loading the updates, I found that the File Types had reverted back to their original form without the "%1". Now I was really excited. Why would they reset user changes unless they fixed something related to them? To my dismay, the slow startup was back. I had to go back and set the "%1" back into all of the proper command lines.
As of now, my recomendation to IT is to stay as far away from Office 2007 as possible until Microsoft gets their act together.
By the way...I have tried all of the other recomendations from Microsoft about Excel being slow to start. They make a difference of less than 1 second. They also only make the App start quicker. They are not related to clicking on a file to open it.

I didn't seem to get much help from this forum but I will pass on the fix that I have found.
The problem doesn't have anything to do with the %1 fix that everyone is using. All that does is to open the file before Excel is fully started. In particular, before the add-ins are opened.
You can verify this by changing the command line in the File Types to use a /s parameter which will bypass loading the add-ins.
What I found was that even though I had removed the Adobe AcrobatMaker add-in, the file PDFMaker.xla was still in the XLSTART folder and was being loaded.
Since Office now has it's own PDF functionality, this is no longer needed. I did however want to keep Acrobat so that I could print PDFs from other applications and edit PDF files so I wanted to keep it. Just not in Office.
Here are the steps to remove PDFMaker from Excel.
Choose Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Select Acrobat Professional and click Change/Remove.
    Click Next.
    Select Modify and click Next.
Expand the Create Adobe PDF menu, then select the Acrobat PDF Maker option, and change the status to "This feature will not be available".
Click Next, and then click Finish to complete the process and allow Acrobat to remove the PDFMaker component. Note: You need the installation disk to do this.
After completing this process, it is interesting that it disabled but did not remove the PDFMaker.xla add-in. It is therefore necessary to remove it manually by exploring to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART and manually deleting PDFMaker.xla.
Now for those of you who have already tried the "%1" fix and found that it causes new problems and doesn't fix things, you may have already found out that when you try to remove the "%1" from the File Type Open command line, something puts it back in as %1 without the quotation marks. This causes errors when you open a document that has spaces in it's path such as unable to open C:\Documents.xlsx, Unable to open And.xlsx, unable to open Settings.xlsx. No matter how hard you try, you cannot remove the %1.
So here is 2 ways to overcome this.
You can change the parameter from %1 to "%10". This will work as long as you don't try to open 10 files at the same time.
Or you can edit your registry and remove the %1. The easiest way I found was to open the registry editor and search for excel.exe" /e %1. Notice that this is the end of the command line. When I found it, I removed the %1. If you edited more than just the Open command for XLS files, you will need to keep searching until you remove all of the changes. This will get you back to where you were before you tried the "%1" fix.
There may be other add-ins that cause similar problems. Look in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART folder to see what is really getting loaded.

  • New Chromatic Aberration tools kills old settings.

I've just recently found that new chromatic aberration tools kills settings for old chromatic aberration tools.
Lets say I have a PV2010 photo with adjusted sliders for chromatic aberration reduction and selected defringe "all edges".
Now I'm importing this photo to LR 4.1.
Note: I'm not updating process version!
Photo is automatically updated by Lightroom to new CA controls (note it still PV2010 photo).
Well, I must say the the results are superb - they are the same as I was achieving with manual sliders, but now with only one click.
But the problem is - Lightroom says that metadata have been changed, and I am writing back changes to XMP.
But now XMP contains settings for new CA tools, but settings for old CA tools are LOST.
So if I want to open this image in ACR 6.6, or send it to someone with older LR version I end up with completely resetted CA settings, because ACR 6.6 does not have new CA tools, and settings for old tools are killed by LR 4.1 - they are just removed from XMP.
So I am loosing CA removal settings completely when opening image in earlier version of application.
And I am NOT updating process version!
    Any comments on this?

Here is screen shot in which you can see that even PV2010 photo has new CA tools and old ones are gone with their settings applied in LR3.
I have tried to import CR2 files without any settings in the XMP into newly created empty catalog and have same result.
When I am switching photo to PV2003 or PV2010 only new CA tools are available.
And saving metadata to file kills old CA settings and writes settings for new tools (even for PV2010 photo) which previous versions does not understand.
To my opinion this is very serious bug!

    Looks like noone cares...
Can someone at least say do I am the only person having this issue, or you can see this behaviour too.

  • Auto-optimize chromatic aberration settings

This is actually pretty simple to implement, has an obvious interface, and would be very handy.
Add a dropper/crosshairs type tool to the CA module. When touched to the image it will fiddle with the CA settings until the fringing in that area is minimized. This could converge very quickly and accurately in an area like a backlit edge. If it doesn't converge, no big deal, do nothing and let the user try another point.

Yes, and I think version 1 had it too.  The high-end cameras adjust in-camera too when producing jpegs.
There's a lot of talk about proprietary lens tables and encrypted raw files on the internet, but I'm almost certain that these are not required.  If I can remove aberration by adjusting a couple of sliders and the alt/option key at 400% with a squint, without any lens tables, then it must be possible to do this automatically in software by measuring the green/magenta or yellow/blue levels in an image (or part of an image).
Of course, the proof of the pudding would be in how Nikon cameras and Capture NX deals with non-nikon lenses, like Sigma, Tamron, and Tokina.  Do they get corrected too?
There seems to be a trend at Nikon of producing cheaper lenses with quite a bit of lateral chromatic aberration.  It makes good business sense to save money on materials if the effect is easily (and cheaply) fixed in post-processing (as long as the aberration can be removed satisfactorily).  So the problem isn't going to go away; it may even get worse.

  • Presets for chromatic aberration correction?

I've been wondering about this one for a while - is this actually possible?
I believe that it hinges on the following - I know c.a. varies based on focal length, so I'd have to create a preset for each possible focal length from my zoom as I happen to use them.
But, does it also vary within a focal length by the focus distance?  In which case, a preset is clearly not possible.
    Thanks for any help.
    Selby

I'd love to see geometric distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration correction based on lens/camera combination built into Lightroom.  I happen to be a Canon owner and though this functionality is available in Canon's Digital Photo Professional software, using it does mean a trip through Yet Another Program.  Having everything integrated in lightroom makes life a lot easier (just think of Lightroom's excellent integration of ACR functionality).
BTW: there is an open thread called "Auto Chromatic Aberration Correction" in the "Lightroom Feature Requests" forum.  You might consider posting your request there.

  • How can I repair chromatic aberrations in PSE?

    Hello,
how can I please repair chromatic aberrations (the edges around are red, green or violet colored, this might not be) of my Fujifilm Finepix A500, 5,1 MP? I have Photoshop Elements 8 and I can not find a button to remove the aberrations. Can you please tell it step by step. I have not so much experience with PSE 8. You can write to me in English, German or Czech language. Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely
    Lesnivila

    Lesnivila,
I some cases you might be able to remove the aberration with a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. In this example, in the H/S saturation dialog box I selected red from the list and moved the Saturation slider all the way left. This desaturated most of the picture but I then filled the layer with black to restore the original.  Then I activated the Paint tool and painted with white over the red portion to restore the desaturation.
I only painted the red on the sweater along the left portion of the table leg so that you can compare it to right portion.
Note:  If you paint too far, for example onto the table leg, then undo it by painting with black to restore the original. If you initially set the foreground/background colors to their default black/white values, you can type "X" to toggle between black and white while painting.

  • Correcting chromatic aberration

    Hello all
Why is there no option to correct chromatic aberration in the RAW procedure?
Nikon Capture NX2 can do that easily. The correction algorithm looks very good there.
I love the Aperture interface but finally what counts is simply image quality.
    Thanks

Clearly this is not a question.
Perhaps consider using batch CNX and save out tif and use Aperture as an alternative workflow.
CNX can remove CA on most Nikkor lenses because its their own proprietary format (nef) with their own lens database and with their own bodies, and their own software. You're not really surprised are you?
Maybe the next version of Aperture will have some CA removal capabilities... There is a suggestion submittal for Aperture.

  • CS5 Chromatic aberration sliders missing

CS5 camera raw, under lens correction tab, profile, no chromatic aberration slider. Under the manual tab, same thing. Do I need to download an update?
    Thanks,
    Vince

Nope.  The controls have been removed on purpose in Camera Raw 6.7 and they're not coming back.
Adobe thinks their automatic CA removal is better, even though examples have been shown where it's not.
    See also:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/4397207
You are forgiven for thinking that every new version should be made more capable than its predecessor and make better quality images.   Apparently Adobe feels other factors (ease of use?) trump this.
If you don't need new camera support it's possible you can revert your Camera Raw plug-in to version 6.6, which still has the controls.  It gets a bit geeky, but I can advise you further how to do that if you'd like.
    -Noel
P.S., It's easy to show that the newer method doesn't always work as well.  Note this Canon 10-22 image including the moon near the upper-left corner as opened with Camera Raw 6.6 vs. 6.7.
