LR4 color management oversaturated colors on a dull laptop

I'm starting to use LR4.1 on a Lenovo T500 Win7 laptop with a miserable LCD panel and with an external wide-gamut IPS Dell U3011.
I used to use Picasa (non-color-managed), and have calibrated both displays with Eye-one display2. Its profile loads upon Win7 startup and corrects laptop colours considerably, while the change on the U3011 is hardly noticeable. I used near-native white point and gamma so that most of the laptop display's limited gamut is used, and I can work on the laptop when necessary with predictable relationship to the U3011 display.
The color-managment of LR is markedly different; I can see it set in when moving the image more than halfway from one display to the other on the extended desktop. It slightly desaturates the U3011, which is good. And it pumps up the colors on the laptop too much: the pale-colored images do get closer, but any vivid colors are blown on the display. I'm quite positive about this because I see the saturation level in the color channel "staircases" of a sRGB test image that set in just over half-way in the R and B channel, only the G channel is relatively unaffected. In Picasa this does not occur to such extent, and the unsaturted colours are a bit more different due to different white point & gamma.
Initially I suspected a faulty calibration, but I saw very similar behavior on a similar hw setup with LR4 but without calibration, where Win7 CM was using manufacturer-supplied color profiles for both displays. I would not like to revert to the standard sRGB display profile in Win7 CM because that'd have a bad effect on non-managed programs.
Is there any way to make color management in LR work like non-color-managed applications? Or to adjust the white point & gamma for the laptop display by LR so that it would become more useful with vivid images (yet less accurate)?

Remember that "calibration" is actually two procesesses: calibration and profiling. 
Calibration brings the monitor to a defined state by correction tables to correct white point and tone response curve.  This information is loaded into the display driver at boot-up, and affects the display for virtually all programs (except a few games and such that bypass the driver). 
Profiling measures (just measures, doesn't adjust) the colour space and other parameters of the monitor, after calibration. Generally colour space can't be altered, only measured.  It is this measurement that goes in the profile.  (Confusingly, the calibration corrections tables are also stored in the profile, despite being nothing to do with the profile!)
Colour management is really about the profile (the profile measurement, not the calibration info).  Colour managed programs (and only colour managed programs) use the monitor profile (and the image profile) to convert the RGB values in the image from the image colour space (e.g. sRGB) to the monitor's colour space (as measured and information stored in the monitor profile). 
So the change you see when the calibration is applied at boot-up is just that - the calibration.  Colour management happens when colour-managed programs display images to the screen.

When you drag an image from one screen to the other, are you using Lightroom (or another colour-managed application)?  In which case you shouldn't see a difference between the two monitors.  If you do, then one or both monitor profiles is probably bad.  If you're using unmanaged applications, then this is what you expect to see. One (or probably both) screens will be displaying incorrect colour.  But each will display different incorrect colour.

Colour management in LR is always on.  And in truth, it's a bit pointless trying to make something behave "like non-color-managed applications".  Thing is: non colour managed applications will look different on every monitor.  Different unmanaged applications may look the same on your monitor, but they'll look different on someone else's.  There's no single "look" of non-managed applications. 
The best you can do is export to sRGB for the web.  Most monitors have roughly sRGB colour space, so this is the best guess you can make at the right colour space for unmanaged browsers.  Using an unmanaged colour workflow yourself is simply adding errors in your system to errors in the viewer's unmanaged system.  It's likely to make it worse, not better!

    I finally got to my references. This had to do with "soft proofing" on screen in Photoshop.
    So this may not help you at all. Re: Strange sRGB soft-proofing behavior  So go ahead and leave that setting at Basic.

  • Colors displaying as dull yellowy-green; new monitor and calibration

    Just got a new ASUS LCD monitor, and calibrated it with the Spyder 3 Express. 
    Now when I import a .CR2 file using Lightroom 3 to edit the RAW image, the color is displayed as yellowy-gray and dull.  It looks the same when I pull it into Elements 7, unless I remove all color management (which, if I save the image, actually then renders the image colors neon and oversaturated with lots of pink and red tones).  If I export the image from Lightroom 3 the image colors are correct and very different from how they look in Lightroom.
    I also use the ACR editor with Elements 7 and I am having the same problem there.  Upon opening an edited Jpeg or a .CR2 RAW file there, the color is displayed as dull, grayish yellowy-green. 
    If I view the very same image in GIMP, Picasa or on the web, as long as the colorspace is intact (sRGB), the color is accurate.  Not so in Elements or Lightroom.
    If you have experience with this problem is it the monitor, the calibration, or Elements and Lightroom?  I am beyond frustrated and need to see my colors properly.  I have not had this problem before.

    I suggest re-reading C S S Simon's and my reply, including the links I provided with solutions and historical explanation – It is apparent you didn't!
    Pay your money and make your display choice, but don't blame the wide gamut capable display because you are unwilling to learn how to use the technology advantages it provides!
    Please read this factoid:
    All Wide Gamut Displays when properly setup to display in a "wide gamut" mode such as Adobe RGB will only display images correctly in color managed applications – PERIOD.
    Your Asus display has two factory calibrated modes, Adobe RGB and sRGB, which will only work properly using the color profile provide to you on CD (or downloaded) by Asus – This the monitor profile Asus used when hardware calibrating your specific serial number monitor at the factory. The displays internal LUT contains that calibration information, and there is no way for you to recalibrate it using a Spyder 3 or other hardware calibrator. I am going to paste here three separate solution alternatives I made at the other post – Use only one (1):
    Solution 1) Delete your i1 Display custom profile and install the Asus provided PA246Q driver and profile. Then use the monitor's "factory calibrated" Adobe RGB wide Gamut selector mode with Lightroom and other color-managed applications. When using non-color managed applications, switch your monitor’s mode selector to sRGB. Calibration using i1 Display or other hardware device cannot be used with this option. User hardware calibration should only be performed using the monitor's 'User Mode.'
    Solution 2) In addition to your Asus PA246Q wide gamut monitor, install a second standard gamut sRGB monitor. Calibrate both monitors separately using your i1 Display unit, which will create separate profiles for each monitor. Use your Asus PA246Q wide gamut monitor only with Lightroom and other color managed applications. Use your second sRGB monitor for with both non-color or color managed applications. You may still have issues properly calibrating your Asus PA246Q monitor with its proper 'User Mode' selection as others have reported, but the results should be better than what you have now.

  • SRGB Color Profile Appears Dull in All Adobe Applications

    I just installed CS3 in Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on my PC and I have my working color space set as sRGB. The color is dull when opening documents in any Adobe application with the working color space set to sRGB. The color is fixed if I change the working profile to my monitor profile which is "Monitor RGB - Dell 2407WFP-HC"
    When in the "Monitor RGB - Dell 2407WFP-HC" profile whenever I open an existing file Photoshop alerts me that the embedded color profile is different than my working profile (all of my existing files are managed as sRGB and on my previous computer the sRGB profile looked perfect.)
    Photoshop I could theoretically live with but the same problem occurs in Acrobat and changing the "Working Profile" in Acrobat has no change on how the sRGB managed PDF is being displayed. The same PDF will look fine on another computer.
    How do I get sRGB color to display correctly in Adobe applications and not look dull and muted?
    Additional Information: The problem is still prevalent when accessing the computer with Remote Desktop which leads me to believe it has nothing to do with my monitor or the video card I am using.

    When using sRGB as the monitor profile then Adobe applications will render colours the same way as non-colour-managed apps---i. e. everything else under Windows. So now you're having a consistent (but not correct) colour rendition across your whole system, inside and outside Adobe applications. This system-wide consistence is nice ... but problems may, and most likely will, arise as soon as you're trying to match the colour renditions of monitor and printer.
    As Tom just has pointed out, the problem is the 2407WFP's actual colour gamut which is not sRGB; it is significantly wider than that. So printed colours will appear muted, or less vivid, in comparision to the colours on the (improperly profiled) monitor. In order to solve this issue, you should use a proper monitor profile in the Color Management tab in the Display dialog in the Control Panel.
    This, in turn, leads to two problems. First---where to get a proper monitor profile from? As I said, the original Dell profile that comes with the monitor is badly wrong ... or at least mine is. If you, or anyone, know how to obtain a good canned ICC profile for the Dell 2407WFP-HC then please let me know. Second---as soon as you install a monitor profile that is different from sRGB (and then re-boot), non-colour-managed applications (notably Windows itself, and e. g. all kinds of web browsers) and colour-managed applications (e. g. all Adobe products) will render colours differently.
    If you want both at the same time---i. e. consistent system-wide colour rendition *and* proper colour management---then better switch to Mac. There's a reason why most graphics pros prefer Mac over PC.

  • LaserJet 200 color MFP printer - one laptop can print while the other laptop at home can't.

    My boyfriend and I set up the LaserJet 200 color MFP printer at home and installed the software on both our laptops.  I have a Dell Inspiron 700m and he's got the Lenovo T400.  I have been able to print any time from my laptop, but my boyfriend has only been able to print one document and after that there is a printer error and is not able to print nor troubleshoot.  I uninstalled and re-installed the software one more time, and again, he was only able to print one document and after that, printer error again (does not specify error).  Meanwhile, I continue to be able to print without a problem.  Anything I may be overlooking? Any help will be appreciated.

    Which of the LaserJet 200 series printers do you have? There are several in that series and I want to make sure I'm helping with the right one.

    To start off with, you will need to download iTunes. Make sure that you download the correct version, Windows, and if you have 32-bit or 64-bit. Pictures taken with the iPhone are imported to the computer via Scanner and Camera Wizard in Windows, or can also be copied via Windows Explorer in Computer. Photos are then synced to the computer via iTunes by selecting a folder on the computer that contains photos and they are copied to the computer.
    Calendar has to be handled by a supported application. That can be Outlook 2003 or 2007. Other choices include using Google calendar, MobileMe,etc. The latter allow for OTA syncing of calendar. Contacts require a supported application as well, those include Outlook 2003 or 2007, or Windows Address book in Vista, or Windows Mail in Windows 7. You also have the option as above for Google or MobileMe.
    Information about what you might want to use is found on the Apple website and descibes the supported applications.

It appears as though it performs much slower than windows 7 computers. Other programs installed seem to run at the same speed or faster. Is it due to windows 8 and will windows 8 Pro allow the installation of the 64 bit version??

    You installed the 32bit version of Win 8 - or at least LR4 thinks so. Verify that. If yes, then everything is as it should be. If not, something went wrong, but we'd need a lot more info...

    Even when 32 bit Solution Manager was supported, it is very doubtful your laptop would have the required memory or diskspace to install and run the system. You can see the system requirements in the SAP installation guides.

    Yes.
    VMWare (and Parallels as well, for that matter) offer networking services in a variety of modes: Bridging, NAT and Host-only. To be able to connect VM's "internally" for NAT and Host-only networking, VMWare itself needs to provide something like a "virtual router" for each of those services.
    There are three private address spaces defined by RFC1918. 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12 and 192.168.0.0/16. In your case, your standard internal IP addresses used on your network are in the 192.168.0.0/16 class and VMWare has chosen two addresses in the 172.16.0.0/12 range for vmnet1 and vmnet8.
    eliminating them will kill network connectivity for your VM's. Plus, the next time you reboot, VMWare will just recreate them anyway - you can see the kernel messages in the Console.

  • RGB colors become dull in Acrobat PDFs

    I'm using CS6 and when I create a PDF, the RGB colors appear much duller than the original source file. The shift is about (if not exactly) what you would see if you converted an RGB document with bright colors to CMYK.
    I'm on a Mac using the latest update to OS X. My typical process for creating a PDF is by starting with Photoshop JPEGs and using the "Combine Files in a Single PDF" function, or by exporting an InDesign document (with RGB art) directly to a PDF.
    If I open the exported PDF in either Adobe Acrobat Pro (10.1.4) or the latest version of Adobe Reader, the bright, saturated RGB colors in the original document appears noticeably dull in the PDF.
    I've experimented with several different Color Settings to no avail, including different RGB settings (sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998), etc.). Currently my settings are using Bridge to Synchronize my Color Settings across my CS6 apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat) and have confirmed they are all reporting a Synchronized state.
    My overall Color Setting is "Monitor Color" (though I've also tried others, including the default North American General Purpose). My RGB Workspace for all apps is set to the Profile of my Dell monitor, which was created with Apple's built-in calibration tool (not the best, I know, but wouldn't account for a difference as dramatic as this.) And my Color Management Policies under these Syncronized settings are all automatically set to "Off".
    As a test, if I export my RGB InDesign document to a JPEG and open that file back in Photoshop, the colors are fine—unchanged from the original look as they originally appeared in Photoshop. It's only when I go to Acrobat that the colors shift to a duller version.
    I keep looking in Acrobat preferences for a "Display PDF with Embedded Profile" or something along those lines, but Acrobat Color Management settings are the same as all my other CS6 apps.

    Yes, I too suspect OS X 10.8 being the problem.
    Apple's Preview shows the colors fine. I also opened the PDF in Photoshop - fine.
    I even converted the colors in Acrobat X to a different color space (ProPhoto RGB). Still looks bad in Acrobat, still looks fine everywhere else. Also single images in the ProPhoto RGB PDF sent from Acrobat to Photoshop look fine and show the correct profile.
    Just like you I happen to see this the first time on Mountain Lion. It also seems to be connected to the monitor's profile somehow. Here's why I think so:
    Photo Mechanic by Camerabits (www.camerabits.com, a professional image viewing and rating program recently had issues with colors. They looked way over saturated or very dull, depending on whether the programs CMM was off or on. But the effect looked different on three different machines I checked.
    A Mac Pro with NEC PA271 and NEC Multi Profiler
    A Mac Pro with NEC 2690WUXi and NEC Spectraview II
    A MacBook Pro 17", calibrated with Datacolor Spyder 3 Pro
    All Machines on OS X 10.8.x
    On one machine the reds got over exaggerated, on the other it had a orange-green tint. And so on.
    The developer of Photo Mechanic gave me a special error logging version and with the log I sent him he eventually was able to fix it. Seems to say a lot if you ask me ...

  • Laptop Losing Color Management Settings When Docking or Undocking

    I originally posted this to the general Windows 7 support forum; however, one of the support engineers recommended that I move it here as I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise, so here it is...
    I am running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit on a Dell Latitude E6540 with a docking station.  I have color-calibrated the display on the laptop as well as an external display attached to the docking station.  Whenever I undock the computer, the
    system resets the color management settings and I lose the color calibration on the laptop's display.  I then have to go in manually through the Control Panel and re-apply the calibration profile to get things back to normal.
    I have everything set up so that the calibrated profile is the default profile for the system and I've verified that this is the case whether or not the machine is docked, but it still loses the calibration settings every time.  All video system drivers
    are updated and current as well.
    Any thoughts or ideas on how to resolve this issue?

    Thanks for the link to the article.  While I still suspect that the color calibration issue is related to the Intel drivers, the only response that I'm able to get from Intel is that it is a Windows operating system problem and not theirs.
    To be clear, the issue described in this article does relate specifically to power savings, which are typically only enabled when running on battery.  I do have this particular setting disabled on my laptop in order to maintain color accuracy for
    my work.
    My issue is clearly with the Color Calibration Profiles.  The default profile for the laptop, which appears to have no actual calibration at all, has the screen showing a very heavy blue bias.  The bias is so strong, that the frames around the
    windows, ribbons in the Microsoft Office apps, etc., which should be grey, are displayed as blue.  The blue bias also tends to wash out most of the other colors and makes the screen look dull and unsaturated.  However, as soon as my Color Calibration
    Profile is used, the Windows elements display as grey and the screen colors look much more vibrant.  It really is a night and day difference.
    When booting up the system or logging into my user account, even on the default blue Windows screens, you can clearly see the change when my Color Calibration Profile is loaded by the system just before it brings up the desktop.  Once loaded, it remains
    working, as I've said, until the computer is undocked or docked.  Then it immediately reverts to the default Color Calibration Profile and the screen shifts back into the blue range again.
    I think that for another test, I'm going to remove all of the calibration profiles except for mine and see if that has any affect.  If it doesn't, I'll rename my profile to the same name as the default profile and see if that does anything.  It's
    just something that I thought of now to try.  I'll let you know how it goes.

    I created an RGB file in Illustrator CS5. I saved an .eps, also RBG, and the colors are much duller. I've tweaked the color settings and tried using Pantone colors to no avail. Not sure what else to do?

    Supposing you save to EPS version 10 or above:
    When opening the EPS in Illustrator you shouldn't see any difference at all, because Illustrator will open the AI part of the file.
    Only when opening or placing the file in another software you might see this difference. So: which one is it?
    You only see a difference if you check the "include CMYK colors" option in EPS settings.
    This opens 2 questions:
    - do you need EPS at all?
    - do you actually need this CMYK data?
