Lr4 Install+AVOID lr3 catalog possible?

Just downloaded the Lr4 final
Had to search around to see if the beta was to be uninstalled. Never did find that info.
At this time I do not want to merge or connect to the Lr3 catalog. Is there a distinct choice to accomplish that while installing Lr4?
The beta version took over the file association of .Ircat so attempting to open an old Lr3 catalog was stopped with the message that it did not fit with Lr4
Is this the expected behaviour post install Lr4?

A colleague of mine can't access his 3.x catalog after LR4 installed and converted his catalog. In my case, I can access either the old 3.x catalog using LR3.6 or the converted 4.0 catalog with LR4. Is there a reason for his 3.x catalog somehow being gone or inaccessible?
No reason as far as Lightroom is concerned. Perhaps he uninstalled LR3.x?? What exactly are the symptoms of "can't access"?
His main concern is that point curve edits he had made in 3.x are gone from the 4.0 catalog. I've read LR4.1 should recover those. Is that his best way forward?
These two paragraphs are not the same thing at all. Unrelated to one another. Mark me down as confused.
Anyway, yes the LR4.1 Release Candidate fixes the point curve issue.

  • LR4 installed - uninstall LR3?

I installed LR4 from the DVD yesterday, expecting it to merge/overwrite/uninstall LR3 during the installation process.  However, it appears to have been installed in such a way that LR3 is still there in it's entirety (and taking up circa 330Mb of disk space).   This seems to be a waste of resource and I would like to uninstall it - but am I likely to lose anything that affects the LR 4 installation i.e. are there common files etc?

Thanks - have done so and no drama ensued!  Phew.

  • Should I Avoid LR4 and Get LR3 Because of My Huge Hierarchical Keyword List?

I abandoned LR2 several years ago because it crashed from my hierarchical list of 12,000 keywords. (Botanical and common names and other terms.) I have been using CS5/Camera Raw/Bridge to manage and edit my images. The hierarchical list is necessary for my stock photo business.
I will soon be needing to compare and edit images for a book publication and gallery show and I am thinking I may need to return to LR so I can work more effciently.  I do not care about not exporting some keywords or synonyms etc.  I think (right now anyway) that it is fine that all keywords associated with the images get exported for my stock submissions. I  ususally check off only the sub-keywords or sub-sub-sub keywords.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Is LR 3 able to handle my huge list of hierarchical keywords which is now larger than 12,000 words?
    2) Should I upgrade to LR3 and not to LR4 to avoid the keyword mess I have been reading about but don't understand very well?
    3) Is it possible to even upgrade to LR3 now that LR4 is released?
    3)  Would LR4 handle my keywords better or worse than LR2?  Than LR3?
    4) Is there a work efficiency reason to upgrade to CS6 without using any version of LR and continue using Bridge and Camera Raw as I have been?
    5) Is there anything else I have not thought to ask? I am somewhat technically challenged and dread learning new software, having been burned in the past with ExpressionsMedia disaster and LR2 which crashed etc.
Thanks for any and all input from the forum!

I try to answer your questions. I also have a large list of hierarchical keywords (funny ... also botanical names) but not as much as you have.
    1) I think that Lr3 is able to handle your list of keywords. I have not heard from anybody that there is a limit to the number of keywords that Lr is able to handle.
    2) There seem to be some keyword issues in Lr4. My keywords were perfectly fine in Lr3 but after upgrading to Lr4 some of my keywords were not populated, meaning that the keywords themselves were listed in the keyword list but the image count showed 0. I still have my Lr3 catalog so was able to check (with Lr3) that, indeed, in Lr3 all the keywords in question were populated with the correct number of images. Fortunately there were not too many of these not-populated keywords, so I corrected the issue manually.
Since correct keywords are mandatory for your stock business, you are right in hesitating to upgrade to Lr4. In my opinion, the improvements that Lr4 offers over Lr3 are mainly in areas that are - probably - not so important to a stock business: improvements in the Develop Module and new Process Version, the Book Module, the map Module. On the other hand I would think that image management is paramount for you and in this area Lr4 is not much different than Lr3.
    3) You will not be able to get an upgrade to Lr3 from Adobe now that Lr4 has been released. So you had to find a 3rd party vendor (B&H? Amazon?) who still sells Lr3.
    4) Apart from the issue described above, I don't see any difference in keyword handling between Lr3 and Lr4. Lr2 is too far back for me - I don't remember.
    5) My suggestion for you would be: You have to upgrade at some point. The longer you wait, the more difficult the transition will be because the differences of future versions to Lr2 will become greater. Since at the moment version 4.1 is in the works (there have been two RCs (Release candidates) of version 4.1 already), maybe it would be wise to wait until the final 4.1 version is out. maybe the keyword issues have been fixed.
    6) You can "upgrade" to Lr4 and still have Lr2 on your system. All the Lr versions are stand-alone versions, not "plug-ins" for the previous versions. So you can have two (or more) different Lr versions on your system. So I would suggest that you upgrade to Lr 4.1 (once this version is out) but leave Lr2 on your system. When you Lr4 you will be asked if you want to upgrade your Lr catalog to Lr4 and you have the option of saving the Lr4 catalog as a different file, so that your Lr2 catalog is still available for Lr2 (Lr2 will not be able to work with the Lr4 catalog!). That way, if anything is amiss in Lr4 you can go back to Lr2 and work from there.

  • Does LR3 catalog roll automatically into LR4 on installation?

I installed LR4 and now have LR3 and LR4 catalog in the path: Mac HD>Users>me>pictures>Lightroom.  Do I need to keep the LR3 catalog. I'm not sure how to tell if it is redundant or not?
My question: Can I delete the LR3 Catalog? Is the LR3 catalog  automatically brought into LR4 upon installation?
    Thanks,
    Rima

I would keep the Lr3 catalog for a while until you are sure that everything is OK in Lr4.
As long as Lr3 is not un-installed, you can use it to check things out as they were in the Lr3 catalog.
Lr3 cannot read the Lr4 catalog, so as long as you have the Lr3 catalog you can check things out in Lr3.
But refrain from doing any work in Lr3 because it would be saved in the Lr3 catalog while Lr4 works with the Lr4 catalog. So your Lr3 catalog should be "read only" - only for checking things.
Once you are sure that everything is fine and accounted for in Lr4 you can delete the Lr3 catalog and un-install Lr3.

  • Error message while importing upgraded LR3 catalog to new LR4 catalog

I'm using a Win7 x64 system, 3Ghz Xeon dual core, 8 GB ram system.  After upgrading a LR3 catalog to LR4, it would not display all images in GRID VIEW in the upper level folders.  i.e. D:/Photos/2011.  It will display the images in the 2011 folder but not in the Photos folder.  And yes I do have the "Show Photos in SubFolders" selected.
By importing this updated LR4 catalog to a new LR4 catalog the display problem disappears.  However, I get an error message at the end of the import saying that "Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error."  This occurs after it says it is importing updated keywords.  But, as compared to the LR3 catalog, the new LR4 catalog shows the correct number of images in the catalog, shows the correct number of collections and seems to have all the keywords in the keyword list panel.
Because there seems to be some sort of catalog database upgrade error, I am hesitant to use LR4 for production at this time.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this error might be, or a work around for the error so I can be confident in my LR4 catalog?
    Thanks,
    Tony...

I've pgraded to LR4.1 RC1 and then created a new catalog, imported from my original LR3 cat. It updated that temporary cat and then imported to the new LR4 cat without issues or error messages. I then just did an upgrade to my original LR3 cat and saved it in another location. Upgrade went without hitch or error messages and I am now using that catalog.  So far, so good with the new candidate.

  • LR4 Install. My Images are on External USB

    HI
During a clean install of LR4 it comes up with an "Import" dialogue box for importing into LR4.
However my Pics are on an external usb drive and the LR3 Cat I saved to usb.
Whats the process to install this type of setup
    Thanks in Advance Carlo

Start from your OS file browser (explorer in windows, finder in mac), point to the LR3-catalog file on your USB and choose to open it with LR4.
It should get auto-converted to lr4.
Then close LR4 and move all created catalog stuff onto your USB. Open the catalog from there again and ensure that all catalog settings fit to the location on your USB-drive, same as you did previously for running LR3 from this drive.

  • I deleted my LR3 catalog from my MAC IHD; how do I relaunch fromEHD? relaunchfrEHD?

I inadvertently deleteted my LR3 catalog from my Mac internal hard drive. The catalog is situated on an external hard drive. I tried to relauch the catalog into LR but have not been successful. I would relish any advice you can give me. Thank you, Peter

Well to tell you the truth, I'm not sure I understand your situation.
First you say you deleteted (yes, that's your word) the catalog accidentally. Then in the next sentence you say "The catalog is situated on an external hard drive", present tense, as if you are speaking of a different catalog file that you actually have available. So, I think this is a COPY of the catalog file.
    Apparently I misunderstood.
Your catalog file is accidentally deleted. Then, I would say you are in dire straits, and I now give you different instructions.
First, look in the trash can/recycle bin. If it's not there, then:
Second, in Lightroom, try File->Open Recent and see if your catalog can be found that way. If that doesn't work:
You need to downloand and install and run something called an "undelete utility". There are freeware versions available on the internet. This utility may be able to recover deleted files. However, this is crucially important — do not use your computer for anything else except this task. The more you use your computer, the less likely it will be that the file can be recovered. So, this is so important I'm going to say this again, in bold: do not use your computer for anything else except this task.
Lastly, whenever you get this fixed, you need to adopt a comprehensive and regular backup plan that includes your photos and your catalog file.

  • LR4 Upgrade shows LR3 Tone Settings panel - Help!

I just upgraded from LR3 to LR4 and migrated my photo catalogs to the LR4 version.  As I was working with my photos, I noticed the Tone Settings panel initially loads the new LR4 version (with Whites and Blacks) but, once the program is completely loaded, it displays the LR3 Tone Settings Panel (with Hightlights and Blacks).   Has anyone else run into this and how can it be fixed???
    Thanks in advance!
    Craig

When you upgrade your existing LR3 catalog to LR4, all images in the catalog that had previous develop adjustments (so likely most of them) will retain the 2010 Process Version, and therefore will exhibit the LR3 controls in the Basic Panel. These can be upgraded to PV2012 (and thus to the new Basic Panel controls) as indicated by Michael.
New images imported into the LR4 catalog will by default get PV2012, thus you'll see the new controls from the outset. On such images you can, if needed, revert back to PV2010 by selecting the option in the Camera Calibratiion panel.

  • How to install the Recovery Catalog

    Hi:
How to install the recovery catalog? I used the following commands from the menu and it didn't work:
    connect rman/rman
    @?/rdbms/admin/catrman
    There is no catrman.sql exists.
    Thank you very much.

If you are using Oracle8i, make sure your compatibility is set to at least 8.1.0 and you are connected to the catalog database. Then type create catalog; at the RMAN command line.

Will LR4 install and run in Windows XP?

Agreed, I tried to install it and was notified about not being compatible with xp. wpbfjr is right, I made the decision to stick with xp pro when vista came out and windows 7 isn't different enough or better (as far as I can see) so I'm not changing. So sad. I was so excited after seeing what you've done to lightroom 4. Love the fill fix. Just not worth the $200 OS upgrade.
Win7 Home Premium upgrade is half that - $100 on Amazon. And it is far, far better than Vista, which was light years ahead of XP. I know - I've had all three. Win 8 is nearly out, so if Adobe kept Lr running on XP, that would be 8 different versions of Windows to cope with! 32bit and 64 bit versions of XP/Vista/Win7/Win8. I've still got all my early copies of Windows 1/2/3, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, but I don't expect LR to run on them!!

    Hi Amer,
For OLAP access in 10g database you must apply the 10.1.0.4 patchset that can be downloaded from Metalink. This provides many new features for the OLAP option such as improved sparsity management and paritioned cubes to name a few of the new features.
Once you have this patchset installed you will then be able to use Discoverer to access your dimensions and cubes.
    Hope this helps
