LR4 LR5 GPS

I reported a bug to Adobe which meant that GPS information from the Panasonic GH3 was not displayed or used in LR4. I believe this applied to some other cameras too.
I am happy to report that GPS from the GH3 is now read properly and as well as displaying the coordinates, LR5 will also write the localtion, region, country and country code to IPTC. That's a big time saver for me since the work that I do requires location info to be written to every pic I take.

I'm pretty sure there is no such function in Lightroom.

Importing all images without duplicates - LR3, LR4, LR5

Howdy. I've been using Lightroom 3 for a couple years.
Recently, a friend passed away. I went to look for photos of him and realized that many were missing. I've since found a few of them on Facebook, and suspect that some are lurking in old backups (of my files in general, not necessarily LR backups) on various hard drives. Things are desperate enough that I want to do an Import on *every single freaking image* on my 7 external drives and my internal drive, and yes, go through and weed out the little non-photo images that the system finds in all sorts of places on my hard drive.
But! Despite having clicked the check box for "Do not import suspected duplicates," I see that it wants to import thousands of them. Some are photos that I recognize from browsing through my master catalogue -- images I already have. Others are photos that haven't yet been imported -- but when the system finds multiple copies of those files (most of these from my IMAP mail attachment spools) it wants to import all of them, even though they are the same photo and often the same filename. We are talking tens of thousands of pictures, so I'm not keen on going through by hand and un-clicking all these duplicates.
Anyone know if a later version of LR can do this better?
Also, if later versions of LR help the user handle duplicates that are *already* in a catalogue? I've bought some scripts/plug-ins that help do this work, but it's still multi-step, very time consuming, and dodgy.

I'm not sure whether I should bother to upgrade, or simply leave LR and try my luck at something else.

No version of Lightroom has tools to find or remove duplicates, and the import dialog has the same feature that is supposed to prevent duplicates from being imported. Lightroom considers a photo to be a duplicate if it has the same file name, capture date/time and file size.
So upgrading Lightroom does not help in this task.

Trying your luck at something else ... in my opinion, if you are not organized using Lightroom, then simply moving to different software does not improve your organization. And there really isn't any "luck" involved. Improving your organization involves YOU putting in the work to become organized. The software is merely the tool that you use. And so any photographic management software will give you tools to improve your organization. It's really up to you, the software is not the problem.

LR5 Import dialog does not list any images

Lightroom 5 is not seeing that a folder of images I'm trying to import has any images in it. The folder is question has well over 5,000 jpegs (it's my iPhone image depository). While I was able to import images from this folder with no problem in LR4, LR5 is telling me that there are no images in the folder. I've double checked that all my import settings are normal and the same as LR4 and it doens't matter. No matter what I do, I cannot get LR5 to see that there are any images in this folder to import.
Any thoughts?

It doesn't exist in the Folder panel. It never has. It would mess up my workflow to have it as such. I only import from this folder.
Try (via finder) moving a few of the images in the folder to another folder that has been cataloged. Then synchronize that folder to see if the images show.
I did this and the images showed up fine, so there is nothing wrong with the image files.
Instead of invoking the Import Dialog first, drag an image from th Camera Roll folder onto the Library module or the Lr icon. That will bring up the import dialog. see if you get the same results.
Did this and it did not work.
Why this is strange is that I have no problem importing from the same folder in Lightroom 4. Something has changed here in LR5.

When I change anything in Develope module LR5 will not allow me to open a .NEF file in PS6

I am using LR5, ACR 8.2 Beta and PS6 on a MAC. If I open a .NEF file in Develop Module and make any changes I cannot get LR to allow me to choose 'Edit in PS6". The option lights up but nothing happens when I click on it.
If I Choose a .NEF file that has just been imported and no changes have been made, LR will allow me to open it in PS6. Also .jpg and .psd files will open fine in PS6 from LR5.
Any help would be appreciated.

Do you happen to be using a new camera? If the camera you are using in in the latest camera raw that is available in LR5 but is not in the version of camera raw that PS6 uses, that's the behavior I've seen where Photoshop basically doesn't do anything. Remember that Adobe doesn't go back and update camera raw in the old versions of PS. I've got a post coming out on Tuesday that covers my experiences using LR4/LR5 and PS CS4. But the way that I get around the incompatibility is to have LR render the file and send it over the PS instead of having PS try to open my NEF.
I think typically what should happen if you open a NEF, make changes to it, and try to send it over to PS is that you should be prompted by Lightroom to see if you want to send over the NEF or a rendered version of the image with the Lightroom changes. Do you see that dialog at all?

Trouble Creating a New Directory to Import into

I just upgraded to Lightroom 5 today and installed the update to 5.2 on Windows 7 64 bit. I have run into a problem I never had before. In the import module I want to create a new directory to import into. I go through the same steps I did in Lightroom 4, but when I am done, the directory does not show up on the list. I can find it in Windows Explorer, but not Lightroom. If I leave the import module and then return, the directory shows up in the Lightroom list of directories. I have tried this twice with the same result both times. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a Fix?

Thanks that works. I found that even though the new directory did not show in the Import list of directories when I created it usind the right-click method as I did in LR4, LR5 is in fact creating it and will import to it. Another odd thing is when I create the directory using the right-click, Windows Explorer method, the directory list in the Import module flickers like it is adding the new directory. However, the new directory cannot be seen.

Lithtroom 5.X exit problem

After some random time, I can't exit Lr trough File Menu/Exit, or even if I use shortcut Ctrl Q. Instead of that, LR applies preset. I have same problems with W7, W8, Lr4, Lr5. Maybe the bigger amount of my presets crashes a part of Lr. Other functions work normally.
The problem is presistent quite a long time. Anyone had similar problems?

I forgot to mention, that I also have problems with command Ctrl + Z. Undo command applies preset to all images.
And it is really very annoying when you have a few hundred photos from wedding in Lr library.

Importing Promblem

All of a sudden LR locks up after clicking on the Import tab. The import screen comes up but not completely and locks at this point. I will get a window pop up that says Adobe Lightroom 64bit has had a problem and was shut down. All other features work normally. I have tried to re-install but the problem persists. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Geoff, I'm running Win 7 on a new system. I have my photos on a Toshiba 2TB external drive. All the photos are being re-imported from that external drive to my LR catalog. All have been edited previously in LR4/LR5 on my old computer. LR5 has been a little buggy on this new computer for some reason. It is now allowing me to import, however it won't import every picture. Don't know if it has anything to do with it but it seems if I have my Kindle Fire plugged in I have more trouble. Wouldn't think that would matter but with it plugged in I can't import, unplug it and I can. Thanks...

Lightroom 5 Standalone Upgrade Download available?

Hello, my new camera body hands me a RAW format my LR4 doesn't like, so it's time to upgrade to LR5.
I cannot seem to find a purchase link to a downloadable LR4->LR5 upgrade (standalone only). The LR product page has a link to standalone but the link is for the full product purchase. If there's no such animal, I do see the boxed upgrade (DVD) is available at retailers and will go with that.

You might want to hold off purchasing LR 5 because LR 6 may (or may not) be released soon, and see if the 30-day free trial gets you enough time so you don't have to buy Lightroom 5 and then also purchase LR 6. No way of knowing, though.

How do I use a LR5 catalog in LR4?

I own lightroom 4 on one computer. I installed a lightroom 5 trial version on another computer for a trip I went on. I used lightroom 5 on the trip, keeping my catalog and all my pictures on an external hardrive. Now that my trial vertion for lightroom 5 is about up I need to use it's catalog in lightroom 4. How do I do it???

Short answer is: you can't. Catalogs are not backwards compatible, never have been with Lightroom.
Assuming you have processed those images in LR5 (if you haven't, just import them again into LR4), the best you can do is to select all images in the LR5 catalog and do Ctrl-S. This will write most of the metadata associated with those images back to the files (or to XMP sidecar files if using proprietary Raw format), though not all of it. Then you import the images into LR4 and hope for the best.....things like Keywords, Titles, Captions, GPS data should be preserved, but develop edits will be more of a lottery. Because the undelying Process Version is the same, some of the edits should be preserved, but anything done in LR5 using the new tools will be lost as LR4 will not understand them.

I have lost Lightroom 5.6 due to a hard drive crash. The old hard drive has been replaced. How can I get LR5 back? I don't have a disc. I still have my LR4 disc and key. I have another adobe key, but don't know if it relates to LR5.

As stated I operate LR5 as an update from LR4. LR 5 was installed as an downloaded update from Adobe ( via an amazon purchase )
My laptop is ill having nearly filled my HDD. I need to wipoe my HDD and begin again to gain some storage. Is there any way I can re-install LR5 from ADOBE as part of the original purchase agreement ?

Why do I get Colored bands on some images in LR4 and LR5, but not in Aperture?

On some images -- both RAW and JPG -- when opened in LR4 or LR5, there will be one or two "curved" color abberation lines across the entire image. This doesn't occur when I open the images in Aperture. Any idea why? Thanks

Aperture works the same way as Lightroom in this respect. It will first show you the embedded jpeg and will render a new conversion from the raw data as soon as it can. So it is possible the OP saw the embedded jpeg, but that should not last long and certainly by now should have been replaced with a newly rendered preview. Either Aperture is more forgiving of a small defect in the raw file or Lightroom import is somehow getting corrupt files of the sd card and Aperture not (would be weird). Another option is that the camera raw cache is corrupt. This can be checked by emptying the cache (Preferences->File Handling->Purge Cache). Lastly, this might be a corrupt preview in Lightroom. Check this by zooming 1:1 on an offending area in the Develop module and seeing if it goes away.

I believe you are right. I remember vaguely that there is some default lens correction with some cameras like this that is independent of the lens correction module. No clue whether the LX7 is one.

Sorry, maybe I don't understand, but why do you feel compelled to subscribe to CC if you already have a permanent Lightroom 5 licence?

You can't install 9.2.1 or earlier on any Mac that is only Mac OS X bootable. In fact you need to use the restore disks which came with those Macs to install 9.2.2 on those Macs. 8.6 is only possible to install on Macs which came with 8.6 or earlier. The 9.1 disk may be useful for your 1999 PowerMac G4, but won't be of any use for a 2006 Powerbook G4.

Problems after upgrading catalog from LR4 to LR5

After upgrading a LR 4 catalog to LR5, I moved some files around between sub folders. I then went to sync up the parent folder. The dialog box said that I would be importing 12,000 photos and deleting 12,000 missing photos. My folder structure for a ctalog is a parent folder named for the year and the sub folders with the date and shoot description. I was synchronizing the parent (year) folder. When it finished, the folder structure was correct and the photos were in their new(correct) folders. However, all of my LR4 adjustments that had been made in LR4 were gone. There was no history either. It was like I was importing for the first time.
I upgraded the original catalog again and the photos were in the original locations just like the first time I upgraded. I tried to sync an individual folder and it imported 50 new files and deleted 50 missing files. Again the LR adjustments were gone. Any suggestions on how to sync an upgraded catalog without losing my prior version adjustments?

Yes, synchronizing is not the tool you should be using in this case, when you move photos from one folder to another. The proper method is to reconnect your photos in Lightroom after you moved them via: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm. But your current catalog has lost its edit information, so this will not help on your current catalog. So ...
I hope you have a backup of the catalog file before you did the synchronization, or otherwise you will have to upgrade your LR4 catalog again. Open one of those and then reconnect as in the link.
As side advice, perhaps you might want to consider using an organizing technique that does NOT require moving phtoos/folders from here to there. You might want to consider using organizing and searching via keywords and captions and other metadata, which does not require moving photos, and does not require re-linking photos, and gives you the ability to place photos in more than one "category" (keyword), rather than with folders where a photo can be in at most one "category" (folder)
