LR4 Softproof & BPC

How has Black Point Compensation been worked into the softproofing routine in LR4?  Or has it?  Is BPC turned on by default when Simulate Paper & Ink is checked?
Thanks.

OK, well I'm now thoroughly confused.
When I look at the Softproof panel in LR4 I see the button to choose to create a proof copy.  Below that I see the dropdown for the profile selection.  Below that I see the dropdown for rendering intent.  Below that I see a checkbox that says "Simulate Paper & Ink".  I see nothing to allow me to choose BPC on or off.
Is BPC somehow incorporated into the checkbox for "Simulate Paper & Ink"?  That is, if that box is checked, will the black point be adjusted, if necessary, to try to retain shadow detail as it would be if BPC were turned on for softproofing in Photoshop?  If it's not, is there any way in LR softproofing to turn it on (or off) or does it matter?

  • LR4 softproof for CMYK: is there a way?  Specifically, cannot find the CMYK profiles.

In LR4, how do you select CMYK as a softproofing option?  The "Profile > other" option does not list any CMYK optoin like Photoshop does.

CMYK profiles are not supported in Lr and are not displayed.
Lr is a (proPhoto-derivative) RGB application "from the ground up", and I remember one Adobe employee saying that in all likelihood Lr will never support CMYK.
For CMYK softproofing you have to use Photoshop.

  • LR 4 - Softproofing - Missing Profiles

    Installed LR4 final release.
Went to test softproofing. When I attempt to change the profile from the default LR4 opens a mini-window and displays a set of profiles.
It does not display all the profiles on my system.
All my current profiles are available to CS5 apps such as PS and InDD.
I re-installed an already installed profile. It does not show up in LR4
    I rebooted and re-opened LR4. No change.
I physically check Windows/spool/ color/... and all of my available profiles are located in that dir OK. But for unknown reasons LR4 does not appear to know about any profiles other than what I presume to be the canned profiles that it installed.
    This makes LR4 softproofing useless.

The one I want to install is a Blurb profile. That is likely a CMYK profile. I'll check the others.
Yeah the blurb profile doesn't work in LR because it is CMYK. A nagging annoyance caused by the LR engine not being capable of operating in other color models than RGB. Apart from CMYK profiles, certain icc v4 profiles will also not work in LR. A good example is the v4 sRGB profile that can be found on icc's website. Luckily those are rare.

    Detailed description
I have recently bought a used LP2475w for photo color correction and retouching. I would like to make it work in a workflow from capturing Adobe RGB DNG files via my DSLR, via LR4 & softproofing, to output on my profiled Epson R2880. The inkset on my printer has a rather large gamut, so it made sense to me to get a monitor that allows me to softproof saturated colors where applicable.
The calibration process resulted in pleasing contrast and good grayscale neutrality, but there is a flaw that runs counter to what I am trying to achieve with it: The LP2475w, when calibrated using the system above, shows a peculiar gamut that lacks saturated yellow-greens and saturated magenta-blues. It is noticeably smaller than the one posted on TFTcentral for this monitor http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/icc_profiles/hp_lp2475w.icc and does not encompass either sRGB, AdobeRGB or my printer/ink/paper's gamuts. This is obviously quite frustrating.
The preceding image shows a comparison between AdobeRGB (wire) and monitor profile (solid).
The preceding image shows a comparison between TFTCentral's gamut plot of the monitor (wire) and my own monitor profile (solid).
My attempts at troubleshooting so far
reset the monitor to factory defaults and start from scratch
vary the different monitor settings (brightness, contrast, custom RGB settings)
vary the profiling settings (different gammas, different white points including native, different contrast ratios)
compare the ICC profiles via ICCView http://www.iccview.de/content/view/2/4/lang,en/
use both the original Spyder3Pro software and BasicColor Display 4 - results are similar
I am now at the end of what I can do and would appreciate it very much if a monitor- and color-savvy person would chime in on this board. Feel free to check the ICC profile I have generated here. It uses the settings outlined above:

    Questions
What can I do to achieve the same large gamut as other users have?
Does connecting to the monitor via DVI-D make any difference to the resulting gamut? I will soon build a new computer system, but for the moment I am stuck with VGA.

Tried something else, with partial success:
    Installed ArgyllCMS & DispCal GUI
Loaded the corrections for Spyder 3 & LP2475w
    Calibrated & profiled the display for 5800K / Gamma 2.2 / 110cd/m2
And presto - bigger gamut visually (the outlined version is the old one):
    http://www.iccview.de/user/10016/104.wrl
    Coverage according to DispCal GUI:
    100% sRGB
    87% Adobe RGB coverage
Will have to tweak some more using a different set of Spyder 3/monitor compensation settings, but this is much better already.
The root cause for the issue appears to be the match between the colorimeter and the wide gamut display. Apparently you'd need an accurate spectrophotometer to get around these limitations.

  • LR4 crashes when softproofing

Certain icc profiles are crashing LR4 beta when attempting to soft proof while others work fine. I have the error report generated by my Macpro if it is of value to anyone.

Perfect, they are the same ones I've seen.  The ImagePrint ones don't confirm to the ICC spec - go to ColorSync Utility in the Applications > Utilities folder and run First Aid - it should repair them so it doesn't crash.  The crash should get fixed - it should fail gracefull in the final release.

  • LR5.2 softproofing: strange display behaviour

since upgrading from 4.4 to 5.2 I've noticed a strange behaviour when using softproofing in the develop module.
Whenever I switch between rendering intents or different icc profiles, the screen display changes back and forth like 'relative --> no-SP --> perceptual' or 'xx-icc-profile --> no-SP --> yy-icc-profile'. This makes it nearly impossible to judge the differences between RI or icc profiles.
In LR4.4 the switch was seamless between rendering intents or icc profiles.
Not sure what might be the culprit here...
LR5.2 x64, Win7 x64, ATI FireGL V5600 with latest drivers, Colormunki profiled monitor

    Hello
I have also witnessed a semi-transparent rectangle, but I think mine was turquoise. It shows up somewhere in the fourth quadrant of my display during bootup, after my machine had frozen, and I had done a hard shutdown. I started observing these freezes and graphical glitches after updating to 10.5.2.
I would also like to know what is going on.

  • Softproofing shows blacks as a milky grey

I have seen a problem like this before, and raised a question on the forum, but realised what was wrong (the problem happened on a full colour image, and once I set the Process to 2012 it went away). However it has cropped up again, and this time the image was imported directly into LR4 so Process was 2012 by default.
I have an image which is a glass with liquid in against a black background. I have made a few tweaks in LR and am ready to send it off for printing. I just though I would take a look in Soft Proofing to see how the coloured liquid looked. When I click soft proofing and choose the correct profile supplied by my printing company (which is a 'glossy' profile), the black takes on a milky grey appearance, but according to LR is not out of Gamut.
If I choose the matt profile from my printing company, the same effect is there, but less so.
I rather think that this is quirk of softproofing black, what with black not actually being a colour and all that. Since there are no gamut warnings, and I have never had a problem with printed images on a black background, then I think I should ignore this. It does give a rather mis-leading impression though.
Has anybody else seen this, or can offer a better explanation as to what is happening?
    Cheers

I understand what you are saying about LR mimicking the 'paper look' I didn't think of this, and have now tried unchecking the 'Simulate Paper and Ink look' and the blacks come back to what I expect. I hadn't thought of this.
I think then I should really use Softproofing to check Gamut, and not worry about the 'Paper and Ink look', then it will at least look a little more reasonable on the screen. I shall get the image printed and see where I go from there.
Actually the opposite. The gamut warnings are only mildly useful. You’ll likely have colors in the LR color space that fall out of gamut, that is just a fact of life. Depending on the rendering intent you select, OOG colors will be mapped in two differing fashions, those are your only options. Pick the intent you visually prefer ( benefit of soft proofing #1).
But the Simulate check boxes are super important because black as defined as say 0% in LR is displayed on your monitor as a black hole. The system will attempt to emit as little light as possible to that set of pixels. That isn’t how Matt paper (any paper) behaves! The contrast ratio of your display is huge (800:1, 1000:1 or more) compared to that Matt print (150:1, maybe 200:1). So there is a huge visual discount. The soft proof and simulate shows you what the print should look like as best as the two differing technologies allow. Yes, the blacks look muddy. Reality kind of sucks <g>. With good profiles (that means profiles who’s two tables, one for the output, one for the soft proof), proper display calibration, using the simulate check box should produce a much better screen to print match. That’s the ultimate goal for color management.

  • Softproofing - What am I actually seeing

I am alittle confised about softproofing. I understand the principle, in that I apply a colour profile appropriate to my printer/ink/paper, and then I can see what colours are in/out of gamut, and won't print as I expect. But, when I click Soft Proofing, the image takes on a less saturated look, however if I select SRGB as a profile it looks normal. That is I believe because sRGB is the profile I have been using anyway. What I don't understand is why the whole image changes. I assume there is more to it than just colours in and out of Gamut.
That said then I have decided what I need to do is then tweak the saturation. As soon as I do so LR4 asks if I wanta proof copy, which is fine and I understand why. When I make a proof copy though, all the adjustments are greyed out so I cannot do anything. Why is that?
Sorry, if this is a dumb question, but I am a bit of a Newby to this, and I think just a little explanation is required.
    Cheers

  • CMYK in LR4

I often need to convert files to CMYK before sending them to publishers and the inability to export in CMYK can be frustrating.  After completing an assignment I will export the finished files to a folder in tiff format and then have to then run an action to convert them all to CMYK before uploading them to the client.  Because the conversion does not always produce the exact color I often have to then go and adjust the files accordingly.  Why isn't there already CMYK editing support in lightroom 3 and why isn't it already in LR4?  It seems many other photographers would need to deliver their files in CMYK and it would be an obvious compatibility neccesity.

As someone who occasionaly does print publishing, I can tell you that nowadays most people find it quite annoying to receive images in CMYK mode. First of all, 90% of the images that come in as CMYK use a completely different color profile than is being used on the project, especially here in Europe (Photoshop's color management settings default to the US CMYK profiles), or even 100% if the project is using special profiles from the printer optimized to the ink and paper combination. Thus at least one additional profile conversion is required, ultimately resulting in a sometimes quite substantial loss of quality versus a CMYK file based on the original RGB files. And even if the files were the right profile, nowadays many people prefer to do everything using RGB images and have the CMYK conversion performed automatically at the PDF export stage. That has the huge advantage that the same layout file can be used to export files for digital delivery as well. Besides, if someone decides they want to match the colors of several different images that end up on the same spread to be more consisten or to avoid major clashes, or if someone wants to run a batch process of some kind on the pictures, the image has to be converted back to RGB first. And lastly, when working with transparency in a layout (drop shadows, blends, fades etc.), results are often much better if the layout software can perform the compositing/transparency flattening in RGB space versus CMYK. Some programs and editorial systems used by certain magazines or newspapers cannot deal with CMYK files. Depends on who you're working with of course, but unless you specifically asked them what profile they prefer and if they want CMYK, I'd recomend that you deliver images either in Adobe RGB or directly in 16-bit ProPhoto RGB.
That being said, CMYK profiles are probably the most important use case for softproofing in LR (aside from sRGB for Web/Screen output). Isn't the whole point of softproofing to see how your images end up looking when printed? So that you could show an art director live on a shoot how the colors are going to turn out in the end (assuming you know the correct profile of course)? I mean, who hasn't had to explain themselves to someone of the "Those colors looked sooo much better on your screen!" variety, be it an agency creative, a client of a wedding photographer, family, friends, or really anybody who has never heard the term "color management" before and assumes it must be something racist.

  • How to use the RateEntity dimension in SAP BPC?

    Hello everbody,
I am implementing a consolidation process using SAP BPC. I want to use the RateEntity dimension, to translate a same currency into different exchange rates depending on the company.
I want the company which ID is GFU (which is from Brazil) in LegalEntity dimension is converted using a special exchange rate. I have added a GFU member in RateEntity dimension, and I have entered the exchange rates for the member GFU and for the member Global in RateEntity dimension.
But the problem is that after I run the FX Restatement package, converted data for this company is not the proper one, because Global exchange rates have been used instead of GFU exchange rates. Does anybody know why? Do I have to do anything else?

  • How to hide member Account dimension from BPC Administrator for Reporting

Hi experts, i need to hide some members of the Account dimension for reporting, because those members dont use it anymore, but i dont want delete them.
The question is: Does it exist any propierties for this dimension type that allows hiding members in reporting without set members in the BPC for Excel?
I can create a report which contain the members i want to show, but if any change occurs (client desire) the report is outdated.
    Thank you in advance
    Ignacio Vazquez

    Ignacio,
There is no function like that.
You can choose below two options.
    1. Create a property like  'NOUSE'  and set a value 'Y' for unused member
When you create EVDRE report, set a filter against that property that has value 'N'
then those members will not be shown at the report.
    2. Create 'NOUSE' parent member and put members under this parent member.
Maybe option 1 is more easier to do that.
I hope it will help you

Below is a very simple BPC allocation routine I wrote.  The data originally sits on a dummy profit center and needs to be allocated to all itu2019s relevant profit centers. These relevant profit centers can be derived from the profit center hierarchy (BPC_ + ID of entity).

    Gersh,
It works now. I have implemented the below code (ENTITY needed to contain the variable as well). The relationship profitcenter and entity is very important as it derives the relevant profitcenters from the profit center hierarchy (e.g. all profitcenters under the legalentity node).
