LR4 to PS and back creates extra file?

I recently updated from LR3 to LR4.  My edit in Photoshop preferences are for a psd.
When I "edit in Photoshop" using LR4, Lightroom immediately creates a "filename-edit.psd" file.  With LR3, only when I saved from within PS did it create the new file edit.psd file.  I like to keep the option open to use "save as" and save just a jpg if I know this is going to be my final edit and not have a psd.  Now if I save as a jpg, I end up with an extra .psd file.  Is this a change in LR4 or have I not set something that I had set in LR3?

What PS version?

  • Can you use an external hard drive (G-Tech 1 TB) as both a time machine and for storing extra files?

    I just got a new external hard drive and will be getting my macbook pro next week. I was wondering if the external hard drive could be used as both a time machine and to have extra files on it? And if so how would you do that?

    Time Machine requires a drive that is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), so you will need to check to make sure that this requirement is met.
    A drive that the manufacturer says will work with both Mac and Windows will not work with Time Machine.

  • Transferring and backing up project + files

    Hello all -
    I'm working on a project and starting to get a little paranoid about the diminishing space on my system hard drive (I've used up about 65%)
    It was suggested to me that I transfer all my logged footage and FCP working files to an external hard drive (I have a LaCie 160GB firewire drive purchased for just this purpose).
    Question #1: are there any tutorials out there showing how to execute this process, step-by-step? Naturally, I'm worried about losing everything during the transition.
    I was also advised to backup my files on DVD under compression. Again, any tutorials showing how that's done?
    I feel like the more places I save the individual files and project as a whole, the more secure I'll feel. Having everything on an external drive with a lot of free space (which will become my scratch disk, right?) AND on a DVD will ensure that I don't lose anything.
    How do most of you normally work - do you keep your projects on external drives? But what if the external drive conks out or gets corrupted? Is that a matter of faith or do you also save to DVD as was suggested to me? Do you then save to DVD after each daily editing session?
    Apologies in advance for all of the questions (as well as my glaring ignorance) and thanks to anyone who can provide any help with this.

    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   FCP 5.1

    It is highly recommended NOT to keep your media or render files on your system drive. I'm surprised it hasn't been causing problems already.
    Instead, keep all media (video and audio clips, photos, graphics, etc) on a separate physical drive. Since you have a G4, you can easily add additional ATA (aka PATA) drives inside ... up to 3 additional in most models. That would be preferable over an external Firewire drive.
    As for storing the other files associated with an FCP project, most people keep the project file on the system drive (along with the OS and Apps), and they generally keep the Autosave files on another drive. That way you'll always have a recent copy of the project file. I do not recommend backing up any files that can easily be re-captured. But I DO recommend backing up photos, graphics, music, VOs, etc that cannot be re-captured.
    It's also a very good idea to make regular backups of important files off-premises. In the event of theft, fire, flood or other disaster, you'll be able to retrieve the backup and get back to work ASAP.

  • Runtime Server Error in '/' Application and a 'create root file to fix' dunno how to do this.

    For several weeks Firefox crashes when I close it down for the day. Firefox error message box sends crash report. Today I got I think from Firefox: please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".
    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
    <configuration>
    <system.web>
    <customErrors mode="Off"/>
    </system.web>
    </configuration> Then there's a second file it says to add. Umm, where/how? The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.
    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->
    <configuration>
    <system.web>
    <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
    </system.web>
    </configuration>
    Okay, but under ProgramFiles>Firefox there are several folders and none of them say "root" so where am I to create said file and how do I get it there? And then what? I sure don't want to crash Firefox any more than it does as it at least still works.

    jscher - wow. THANK YOU!!! Yes, pale yellow, have emptied cache. Perhaps now everything will again work glitchless. By the way, I completed about half of what all that the post on Firefox crashing said to do. I was a bit intimidated on the memtest86+ tool. But now I am again encouraged. Wouldn't you like to move to Idaho and be my close neighbor. Blessings! Thanks!

  • ORA-01017 error and re-create password file? seek advices.

    I used TOAD 9.5 to log in one Oracle 10g database with sys/password as sysdba. It worked fine always. However, today I tried to log in again and come across the ORA-01017 error. Invalid username/password. Then I went to windows server command line to log in as conn / as sysdba and also log in conn sys/password@sid as sysdba, I all logged in successfully. I checked the password file is in $oracle_home\database\. I logged in as normal user successfully.
    My question is: what caused this ORA-error? how to fix it? Is it necessary for me to re-create password file to fix this? Or there is other options? Thanks.

    First though is double check make sure you have no typo when inputting username/password,
    ORA-01017 is very specific error about wrong password, if you have problem with passwordfile you would likely to get ORA-01031: insufficient privileges
    You can change your sys password using alter user statement, Oracle will sync the password file.

  • CS6 OS X and Illustrator creates temp files when saved

    Hello all,
    First time to the forums, did a search and couldn't find anything, called customer support they didn't have an answer, and they directed me here.
    We recently upgraded from CS5 to CS6 for OS X(Snow Leopard).  Now, when our users open a file and save it, the file is saved, but along with the file, a temp PDF file is also saved in the directory.  So needless to say, if my user makes 10 changes to the file, there is the original and 10 temp PDF files in the directory.
    We never experienced this with CS5, and I'm not sure where to look, our environment has been unchanged with the exception of the upgrade.
    All the files they are working on are on a Netapp NAS device, and only one person is working on a file at a time.
    any help is appreciated.

    Back up all data.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Select the text on the line below by dragging across it. Don't include the blank space at the end of the line.
    sudo chmod -R -N
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Click anywhere in the Terminal window, then paste (command-V). Press the space bar.
    Now switch to the Finder and and select the item(s) that are causing the problem. Drag the items into the Terminal window. More text will be added to what you entered.
    Click in the Terminal window to activate it, then press return.
    You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
    The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. You can then quit Terminal.
    Test.

  • How do I restore my mac mini and back up selected files

    Hi everyone,
    I have a question as I'm a little uncertain how to handle this:
    I have a Mac Mini 2011, Processor  2 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28), with SATA Disks of 500GB each.  I have noticed it remarkably slowing down lately and I when I checked storage, it says I have 8.65 GB Audio, 117.21 GB Movies, 24.09 GB Photos, 17.34 GB Apps and 269.84 GB Other!!!  I guess my first question is what is that 269.84, but I still would like to back up the things important to me (like photos and misc work files) and just restore my mac to factory settings.  Is there any way I can send my Photos and files to my second SATA disk and restore the start-up disk?  (please explain as though I'm new to this...
    Thanks in advance!

  • I will never ever trust saving and back up my files with Apple anymore!

    I would think backing up all my files on iTunes is a safe bet.
    When I lost everything on my ipad after restoring, whatever I have backed up in iTunes was not able to sync it back into my ipad even if I chose to install it back using existing back up files on iTunes! nothing!!
    what is all this synching for if restoring doesn't even work to bring all information back into my ipad??
    Before, I was able to see all the files in an app on iTunes and now not at all!!
    If I could use strong langauge here, it would be endless!!
    My days with Apple is over!

    The iPad backs up to iTunes on your Mac.  Then, when your Mac backs up, the iPad data is backed up as well.
    Or, the iPad can back up to iCloud.
    See this Apple Support document for more info on iPad backups:

    A good product to back up your Mac would be an Apple Time Capsule, which is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive.

  • Grub uses wrong UUID and cannot create config file

    I've tried performing an installation to a USB drive as per the wiki. Everything works up until I try to boot and grub tries to load the wrong UUID for my / filesystem.
    My next step was to chroot back into the USB install and manually change the UUID to the correct one. Odd, as others have pointed out in this thread
    the grub-mkconfig command should detect the correct UUID if run from within arch-chroot.
    Anyway, after changing the UUID in /boot/grub/grub.cfg and trying to regenerate the config file with `grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg` I noticed the file had not changed. This is because the command is exiting successfully, but isn't actually writing any file. I deleted the file and tried the command again to be sure. No new file.
    Next I booted into grub, using the config generated with the wrong UUID, and dropped to the shell using `c` -- I was able to load my install just fine using
    set root=(hd0,gpt2)
    linux /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sdb3 ro
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    boot
    From there I tried removing the bad config file and recreating it using the `grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg` command... no dice. Does anyone know what is going on? At the least the command should tell me that it is failing, no?

    Attached is the output of `grub-mkconfig` running from the chroot.

  • Time Machine taking forever and backing up extensive files.  Help!

    Ever since we upgraded my spouse's iMac, Time Machine has been acting up.  My Mac store/guru guy migrated all the files from her really old G5 to her "new" (refurbished) aluminum iMac... NOT from the external HD she used for her Time Machine back-ups.  When we connected the external HD to her new iMac, Time Machine automatically made a new back-up folder and did a complete back-up to that new folder.  That was unexpected but understandable.  After that, however, subsequent back-ups take forever, and Time Machine insists on preparing tens of thousands of files for back-up every time it runs, even though the great majority of said files had not been touched and did not need to be backed up.  I will periodically check Time Machine preferences during these interminable back-ups, and sometimes it will be stuck in the "preparing" phase, and sometimes in the "finishing up" phase.  The poor external HD just cranks and cranks and cranks.
    I've read many of the Time Machine-related questions and responses, but none seem to address this particular problem.  I tried putting the external HD on the Spotlight Preferences/Privacy/Indexing exclusion list, quitting System Preferences, then opening it up again and reversing the process to see whether Spotlight would re-index the external HD (per one communities suggestion I read), but that didn't seem to take place.
    I have yet to visit the site referenced several times as the Time Machine FAQ gold mine; will do that next.
    Any other ideas, anyone?

    Thanks, Joe.  My software is up to date.  I forgot to mention that, after this first began happening, I erased the external HD and had Time Machine start all over again.  It did the first, complete backup overnight, but subsequent ones still take longer than they should and it still prepares 90,000 - 120,000 items when it should be doing no where near that many files on an hourly basis.  I'm wondering whether the cable needs to be changed out, as well.  We're running OS 10.6.8.

  • Apple script to batch rename files by deleting tags on front and back of the file name

    Hi, I'm trying to rename a couple thousand files from their current format:  "01074_Something Of A Dreamer_Mary-Chapin Carpenter.lrc"
                                                                                                                           "01075_Where Did We Go Right_Lacy J. Dalton.lrc"
                                                                                                                           "01076_Everybody's Reaching Out_Crystal Gayle.lrc"
                                                                                                         To simply:  "Something Of A Dreamer.lrc"
                                                                                                                           "Where Did We Go Right.lrc"
                                                                                                                           "Everybody's Reaching Out.lrc"
    I just want to delete the number tag on the front and the artist name at the end for all of the files.  I imagine a Script to do this wouldn't be too hard to write, something along the lines of read file name after the first '_' character it reads until it reads a second '_' character and rename the file to the string it reads between those two underscores with .lrc at the end.
    Unfortunately I know nothing about Apple Script other than it seems like the thing I would need to automate this process based on my limited google searches.  If someone could help me out with some advice on how to go about making this script or obviously if you simply have and/or can quickly write a script to do this it would be greatly appreciated!

    Here:
    tell application "Finder"
    repeat with this_file in (get files of window 1)
    set the_name to name of this_file
    set temp_name to items ((offset of "_" in the_name) + 1) thru -1 of the_name as string
    set temp_name to (items 1 thru ((offset of "_" in temp_name) - 1) of temp_name as string) & items -4 thru -1 of the_name as string
    set name of this_file to temp_name
    end repeat
    end tell

  • Disk utility can't repair this disk.... Is it still possible to back up my files?

    I was just on Word earlier and the mac crashed, I restarted it and it wouldn't load past the grey screen. I then used my install disc to go into disk utility, where it tried to verify and repair my Macintosh HD but failed to do both. I don't know what's cause this but more importantly I need to know where it's still possible to back up my files without having to purchase Disk Warrior. If I was to take it to the Apple store, what would they suggest?
    I don't know what my operating system is, I recently did a system update last week I believe if that means anything?
    Thanks for your time
    Luke

    Okay thanks Thomas Reed, it's a shame this has happened. It was so sudden...one minute I'm typing on word, the next minute it's broke beyond repair?
    It's peculiar how it says Disk Ultility can't repair the drive but to try and back up your files...when it's actually impossible to do so without any software. I'm assuming things like creating a new image etc. won't help at all.
    I'm hoping the Apple Store people will be able to help me out, I've heard DiskWarrior is good so I may check that out.
