LR5 slow performance selecting images in Grid view

LR5 is noticeably slower than LR4 when CTRL-click selecting a group of images in Grid view in the Library module.  There is frequently (but not always) a pause of up to a few seconds before an image will show as selected.  Also, when I try to grab the selected images and drag and drop into a collection, the images will be deselected if I try this too quickly.
Nothing changed on the computer since the upgrade from LR4.
PC running Win7, 64 bit
i7 processor, 8G RAM
lots of HDD space
LR running off the C: drive

  • I have a photo selected in the Grid View.  When I click on Develop I receive the message "No photo selected."  I'm using Lightroom CC

I also notice that the filmstrip view does not update as I select images in Grid view.

I tried all sorts of selecting and re-selecting in the Grid view and the filmstrip never updated.  As you can read below, I contacted Adobe through their Chat support and they reset my preferences.  That cured the problem.    Now to reset my preferences.

  • Moving images within Grid View in LR3beta2

Frustrated. In LR3Beta1 I could manually move and place images within Grid View or from the slide view at bottom for purposes of sorting "similar subject" content within a specified Text/Attribute naming. All of this was accomplished from the Parent folder, with no need for drilling down the Tree.
Now, since installing LR3Beta2 I can no longer manually move (sort) within Grid View...unless I am in the lower most folder of the tree. This change is not practical since a tree folder may not match the relevance of my specified Text/Attributes.
Can anyone tell me what I may be doing wrong, or is the ability to manually sort from Parent folder no longer an option?

Here's an example of how I catalog/label/sort my images...
Architectural images project - 3 locations of shootng, 4 areas of focus: Doors, Windows, Facades, Walls
So, I may have 20 images w/both a door and a facade in the shot, 20 images with a window and a door, etc. I prefer to Keyword all of the images as Architectural, and then Keyword those applicable to Doors, Windows, Facades, Walls, etc.
Now, suppose those all go into a folder labeled Architecture.
The next week I get an assignment for Urban settings. It may include shops, churches, etc. However, within those, I decide to Keyword (where appropriate) Doors, Windows, Churches, Shops, etc. That project goes into a folder labeled Urban Settings.
Now, let's say I have a request specifically for "Doors". Now, those Doors are spread across multiple folders at this point so I have no opportunity to manually sort all of the doors my similar content if they fall into multiple folders. Doesn't matter that I have pulled up Doors through Text, I still cannot sort them by similar style, shape, color, etc since they are spread across multiple folders.
In the 1st beta, I could slice and dice a hundred ways to arrive at a final view and then...sort those so that they always appeared that way whenever I called them up again. Didn't matter that they were in multiple folders. That was extremely useful and...sweet.
    Any ideas?

  • LR5.5 Cannot rate individual images in grid view

Here's the problem I'm having on LR5.5 on Mac 10.8.5:
In grid view, I select a range of images and hit "N" to go into Survey mode. When I highlight a single image and type a 1-4 rating it assigns that rating to every image selected in the survey. Even hitting "E" to enter Loupe mode from Survey mode does the same thing -- all images selected in the range are assigned the rating, not just the highlighted image. This is a big change from previous versions of LR, making it difficult to compare images and rate individuals.
Has anyone experienced this problem and/or found a solution?
    Thanks very much.

  • Select multiple groups of contiguous images in Grid view

In Windows, the following conventions should be followed when selecting images in the Library module or Filmstrip.
    1. select an image by left mouse click
    2. extend the contiguous selection by Shift+left mouse click on the last image in group
    3. add to the selection by Ctrl+left mouse click on an image
    4. add another contiguous selection by Shift+Ctrl+left mouse click on the last image in group.
In LR V1 on Windows XP Pro, only 1,2, and 3 work; but adding a second contiguous selection (point 4) does not work and behaves like point 3. More images can only be added to a selection by Ctrl+left mouse clicking each individual image (which quickly gets tiresome.)
Note that these conventions work in both Bridge CS2 and beta CS3.

    Second that!
Shift+Page Down to select next page down as well Ctl+Shift+End to select everything to the end of the grid would also be useful

  • Cannot sort images in grid view?

I am trying to re-arrange the order of images in the grid view by mean of drag-and-drop, but LR doesn't allow me to do it. I also manually selected "User Order" from the sort menu with no effect. It is happening only with the latest bunch of photos I imported (both in Collection and Folder), while LR still allows me to re-arrange my old images. I must be missing something obvious (not to me)... any idea?

User sort order comes up on this forum so frequently that the subject deserves to be in the FAQ, especially since user sorting is almost totally undocumented.
As Lee Jay points out, what is implemented is a design decision. There is a basic conflict here between user sort order and the existence of subfolders.
The current implementation has a few rough edges. For example, even including all sub-items in the top folder doesn't free up sorting as has been suggested, at least in my Windows version. Also, even if a sub-folder is empty, user sorting is still frozen in parents. BTW, a sub-folder is one recognized by LR. A folder can have sub-folders in the underlying file system not in the catalog. These have no effect as far as I can tell.
However, in all the cases I have tried, user sorting is available within and into stacks at any level regardless of whether sub-folders exist. I can move things around freely in a stack or from outside the stack (even from another stack) into the stack. Reversal is possible in stack-to-stack moves but not from a stack to the outside, unless the folder has no sub-folders. This fact might help work around the limitation in some cases.

  • Moving Images in Grid View

I can't for the life of me move individual images or groups of images around freely in grid view. The tutorial says to drag from the center of a thumbnail and drag it to the location you want it. I tried that and it just springs back to where it came from. I would like to randomly move images around in grid view and then number and rename. Any help is much appreciated

I disagree. My point is that one should not have to keep in mind an underlying computing model in order to know when you can and can't sort.
In general (not a Lightroom point), as I'm primarily a PC user I'm used to climbing learning curves, but I love the transparency of Macs when I do use them.
That sorting isn't available in Lightroom just because I have an empty sub-folder makes no sense from the photographer's viewpoint.
It's not a big deal, but the sorting constraints are a clumsy rough edge in largely excellent UI.

  • I guess there are not phone support...  I cannot drag images from grid view into collections.

I have been trying desperately to fix this issue.  I cannot drag any images from the grid view into collections.  Can anyone help?  I looked everywhere for a  customer support number but I was not able to find one on Adobe Website.

    Hi,
Only a couple of things I can think of:
    1. Make sure it isn't a Smart Collection, and
    2. Drag by placing the cursor on the actual picture NOT the grey area surrounding the image.

  • Lightroom 5.5 grid view fails to load some images.  These do load in develop, then re-appear in grid.  Re-installed 5.4 (after deleting 5.5, then emptying trash in 10.9.5) and it now exhibits same behavior.  Suggestions?

These same images fail to load in slideshows; "loading" appears without the image ever appearing.  I can export these grayed-out images and retrieve the image content in the exported file.  Not being able to see all images in grid view is an inconvenience for sure; e.g., I can't review all the contents of a collection before posting it.  This behavior didn't occur until I upgraded to 5.5.  Now it has migrated back into 5.4, despite having selected 5.5 and emptying trash before the re-install.

Whoa this is happening to me...

  • Problems with Grid View Selections

I'm having problems with multiple selections in the grid view.  I can select multiple files, but as soon as I click on one of the selected files, it deslects all the other files and only highlights the one I clicked on.  I'm also unable to drag any file or files to a Collection or Publish Services.  This has just recently cropped up. I'm using LR 3.2 and have even reinstalled the software from 3.0 but I'm still having the same issue. Any ideas?

Wow. I feel silly that it could have been such a simple thing.  Seems to have taken care of the problem.  I must not have been paying attention to where I was clicking.  Thanks!

  • Metadata changes made to more than just the selected images

In LR3, I have observed the following behavior:
I have a series of subfolders from a days shoot.  I was making changes to the metadata in each subfolder, updating keywords, title, caption, and headline.  To do this, I selected all the images, and then made the changes, which were applied to all images in that subfolder.
When I then moved on to the next subfolder, the headline of the first image reflected the changes that were made to the previous subfolder even though the image was not in that subfolder.  I saw this same issue repeated as I updated each subfolder and then moved to the next.

I have seen this behavior again today:
I am working on images contained a folder structure like this:
    Folder
         subfolder 1
         subfolder 2
         etc.
There are 10 subfolders, containing from 1 to 22 images
    - View images in grid view sorted by filename, ascending
    - select all images in a subfolder
    - copy text from the title field
    - paste the text into the headline field
    - move on to the first image of the next subfolder
    - the headline of the first image has been changed to the headline text from the previous subfolder
The did not happen every time, but was intermittent.  This occured whether the incorrect headline field started with text already in it or was blank.

  • LR locked up 3 times in GRID view

I have read about this but never experienced LAG or noticible slowing. Today while going through images in grid view LR slowed and crashed not once but 3 times. The first time, the catalog got efft up and i had to use a back up from a aweek ago and lost edits...
SO, what in the world could have caused this?
you can bet I am backing up every signoff when I have work...
    any ideas.

Well you could start by providing helpful information.... what you said is a bit like "my car stopped, is it out of gas"????
Which Lightroom version, where is the catalog residing, where are the image files, what OS, computer specs.....

  • Can I display the File name at the bottom of the Grid view window?

Dang.  I'm probably going to catch some flak for this... but I can't find where this bone is buried.  When the main viewer is in grid mode, the bottom of the window says "1 selected - 9 items displayed" or something to that effect.  Is there a way to replace that with the name of the file(s) that is currently selected?
I have searched the manual and tried many of the Metadata display options and can get all kinds of info to show up when double clicking to bring that image full screen.  But I'd like to see its name when simply selected in the grid view.
Obviously that info is available in the Info pane to the left.  But when doing basic organizing, I like to leave that side on the Library pane.
Screen grab for the situation I am talking about:
    Thank you!
    Bo

    Bo,
I have no idea, if it would be possible to change the caption in the line below the grid.
But why not add the filename of each image to the grid view like this?
Edit the metadata for the Gridview (expanded or basic) to include the "File name" and arrange the display order to show the Filename first. This way you will see it bleow each image.
Another way to alway see the filename would be to set the Metadata Tooltip to include the filename, and to enable the tooltip, when you are using grid view.

  • Make Edit time and Edit count info available in Loupe Info, grid view option, Edit History panel and Smart Collection

We all know that Lightroom can sort images in grid view by edit time or edit count. I cannot find any way to display edit time and/or edit count in view option or loupe info. I think these should be made viewable. Without them, when you have a large batch of image and you previously edited only some and come back later to finish, you don't know which ones need more work, etc.
Another useful thing is that Edit History should have an option to show the date/time of the edit. It may be shown when mouse is hovered over an edit item line.
Similarly, smart folder can filter the images by Edit Time being before/after a certain date. However, if I have no way of knowing what the edit times and counts are, this feature has little use.
Alll of the above should be a specific date like 08-20-2009 or Today, yesterday, 43 days ago, etc. Both forms are useful for different purposes.

    Good idea.
Also, it would be good if the SDK functions for updating custom metadata did not necessarily bump the edit time.

  • How can I see the metadata in the grid view?

I am in View/Metadata Display/Customize and trying to set it so in the Grid view [which I take to mean the browser in grid style as opposed to list] and trying to have below each image the - Rating, version name, caption and keywords.  I check my List and there are entries in all of those four categories.  I checked the Grid View Expanded and all four are listed under Display Order.  Adn Show Metadata below image is checked.  But when I set it all up, only the Rating and Version name shows up  no Caption and no Keywords   tho there are entries in both and both are included in the list of the Grid Expanded View.
Any suggestions?  I have unchecked and cleared out all those and reentered and reset them up and that hasn't worked.

Do they show up if you make the thumbnails in Grid View larger?
I'm pretty sure Metadata Overlays for Grid View and Viewer are limited to one line for Badges & Ratings & Color Labels, and one line for all other metadata (in both the Browser and the Viewer).  Put your most needed metadata field first in the list.  I often need to see Keywords, and I often need to see the timestamp, and I often keep my Images in grid view small -- so I've set up Grid View Basic to start with the timestamp, and Grid View Expanded to start with Keywords.
Of course, that won't be useful if enlarging your thumbnails in Grid View doesn't show the missing metadata.
"Show below Image" forces the line with the Badges, etc., to go below the Image.  If unchecked, this top line of the Metadata Overlay is superimposed on the bottom of the Image.
