LR5 won't open catalog

Hi,
I was working on an LR5 catalog yesterday (which I unfortantely didn't back up) and today it won't open.
I don't even get an error message or a repair option, all LR does, is open a small grey window.
I've read through a few threads, but I couldn't find anything to help with my problem. LR is leaving the lock file after I close it down, but even after deleting it and restarting the computer LR won't open the catalog (which is on an external harddrive).
This is what it looks like
When I try to copy the lr file I get an unexpected error code -50, followed by another error message saying "one or more required items can't be found" code -43.
I run LR 5.2 on OS X.
Thanks for any help!! I'm desperate by now...

I think those error messages that you're getting when you try to move/copy the file are key.  If the operating system can't access the files, then Lightroom certainly won't be able to do so.  What kind of external hard drive?  I've seen -50 errors from a damaged hard drive enclosure before.  You could try some kind of disc rescue software, but I wouldn't trust that drive again, and I'd get everything copied off there asap.

  • Lr5 won't open catalog on external HD (created with Lr4)

Up to now I used Lr4. Always had my catalog and images on an external HD. Never had any problems saving changes in that catalog to that HD. Now I upgraded to Lr5 CC. After installation, I tried to open my catalog on said ext HD but received the following error report:
Lightroom cannot open the catalog named “...” located on volume “TOSHIBA 1TB” because Lightroom cannot save changes to this location.
How can I get Lr5 to work with my old catalog on my ext. HD?
Any help will be much appreciated.

Are you sure LR has writing privileges on the folder containing the LR4 catalog. LR5 does actually not wanting to write to the LR4 catalog but it need to be able to create a new LR5 catalog in the same folder where it will put an upgraded copy pf the LR5 catalog.

  • Lightroom 4 is blank and won't open catalog

Hello, I am a new in this comunnity. I have been using Lightroom 4 for the past  year on my Mac but I did not use it for the past month. Yesterday when I tried to open it again, it opens but it is blank, no thumbnails or anything. It does not allow me to change modules. and when I go to "open catalog" and click on the folder my lightroom just quickly blicks but it continues to be blank. I read some forums on here and I deleted the .lock folder that was underneath my catalog in the finder, but nothing changed.
I did not find this problem that I am descibing in any forum, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not very tech savvy, I wasn't even the one that installed lightroom on my computer so please bare with me
    thank you in advance

Have you tried to Reset the iPod -
Toggle the HOLD switch, make sure you don't see any red at the switch.
Press Menu and Center button for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON, then select your prefered language.
If you are on Mac, then the problem is not iPod resource hogging by the Antivirus.
Yours is most probably hardware due to a dying iPod Hardisk or Battery.
    Battery
On standalone, (not using the iPod docking station)  how long does the battrey last? Should be 36 hours on full charge, when new, but if it has been on the Docking station for 2 years, the battery would be at its max recharge cycle, and would last a few hours only or less.

Here is a link on doing disk diagnostic posted by tt2.

For hardware issues like battery or hardisk, the community can't help you, so you got to bring it in to Apple or 3rd Party vendor for hardware replacement.
    Have a nice day!

  • LR5 won't open

    Hello,
I can't open LR5. I get a notice that says, "The Lightroom catalog named “Lightroom 5 Catalog” cannot be opened because another application already has it opened." It tells me to close the other application, but I can't figure out what it is. Nothing else is running or open. I've restarted the computer with no change. I was using LR just a few hours ago with no problem. Thank you for any help!

Thank you! I read the link and found the file it said to delete. But then I got this message when I tired moving it to the trash, "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
Sigh. Tried looking up what that error code meant and couldn't find a straight answer. Still stuck.

  • Lightroom won't open catalog

    Hello all:
Please help. New to this forum. Using Lightroom 2.2 on Mac.
I had to do a restart after a freeze and then I got the message:
The lightroom catalog named Lightroom 2 Catalog can not be opened because another application already has it opened. Quit the other copy of Lightroom before trying to launch.
I can open my first Catalog but not the Catalog in question (that I had just loaded with several hundred images). I reloaded lightroom program and reinstalled (Catalog.Ircat and Catalog Previews. irdata) from my backup drive. I do have the images backed up on my backup drive but not in my Catalog.
Any suggestions as to how I can reopen the Catalog or is it fried?
    Thanks
    George

    Hello again:
    Further note:
I am able to work using the Catalog in question on my backup drive but when I attempt to
work on my computer (main drive) after I reloaded ircat and irdata I get the "catalog can not be opened" message.
Am I going to have to create a new catalog and reload all the images so I can use them on
my computer and not have to access the backup for same???
    Any ideas, help, suggestions??

  • LR 3.5 won't open catalog after hard drive crash/recovery

The catalog and the rest of my files were restored to the new HD installed in my WinXP laptop by computer repair techs. After I reinstalled LR, I get the dread "LR cannot use the catalog named "Lightroom 3 Catalog" because it is not writable..." There is not an lrcat.lock file next to it and the permissions for the catalog file are open. I tried opening the last back up catalog before it but I get the same result. The program will however open an empty catalog I had made eariler but not used. I tried switching from empty catalog to the problem catalog but I still get the same result. The catalog is in the LR folder in My Pictures as it should be. I can't believe that one file of thousands would be corrupt after the recovery.I'm out of answers. Does anyone out there have an solution I've missed? Thanks in advance!
    Echo

Thanks, Ian. Are you referring to something different from the information I mentioned about the permissions for the file being open? They are not restricted. There are no check marks in the General tab. I tried the back up files but they don't work either. I'm getting a little desparate. I do't want to re-catalog 20,000 images!

  • I bought a new camera, Nikon D3300 . LR5 won't open RAW images. JPEG only. No problems with previous cameras D3100 od Canon S95

How do I open RAW images in LR5 from

D3300 needs at least LR 5.4, the latest version is now 5.7. Its a free update.

  • Lightroom4 won't open catalog from ext hardrive-mac

i just downloaded and installed lr4 on my imac. i had the beta and everything was working fine. my catolog, previews, and images all on an external hard drive. i go to open lr4 and it says "Lightroom cannot open the catalog named “A_Hazlewood Lightroom Catalog” located on volume “Photos” because Lightroom cannot save changes to this location."  why is this? the beta was working great. i have not changed anything. help?

It's a permission issue...on the extern drive are you sure you as admin and read/write? If you Command i on the drive, what are your settings? Unless you have a real good reason, I would set the drive to Ignoreownership on this volume. You might also to a fix permissions on the main drive using Disk Utlility.

  • Presets that come with LR5 won't open. They are listed in the left panel but they or UserPresets will not open

Using iMac with most recent operating system.

When you are viewing the tracks on the hard disc, did you then click on "Import CD"?  This is needed to initiate the importing process that will add the tracks to your library.

  • LR5 downloaded but won't open

I just completed subscribing to CC. Downloaded several apps including LR5, PhotoshopCC and BridgeCC. Lightroom 5 opened and I updated the catalog from LR4.
I closed LR5, then reopened. Now LR5 asks me for a serial #. I put in my LR4 serial number but that doesn't work.  LR5 won't open.  LR4 opens ok.

    Hi Ralph,
Based on this thread it looks like you got it fixed with a reinstall

  • My cataloge won't open, says it is corrupt and repair won't work and I can't access anything.

Don't know what happened. Closed Lightroom after working on photos and now it won't open again. I get a pop up saying the cataloge is corrupt and when I try to repair, it won't work. The AdobeTech note comes up as an error page. I desperately need to open it as all of my recent vacation photos are on it and only half finished. Supposed to be showing them at a party this weekend.
    Please can anyone help?

Still have to redo a lot of work.
If you save (xmp) metadata as you go, then you never have to redo editing work when falling to backup catalog (just sayin'..).
PS - all develop settings and almost all metadata will be in xmp if saved, but not everything from catalog is contained in xmp (and not everything in Lightroom is contained in your catalog!).

  • LR 5 won't open a catalog on my external HD due to "volume" issue

Sorry for the length of this post. Just trying to get as much into to everyone early on. I recently purchased an MacbookPro laptop and downloaded LR 5.  I had been doing all my LR5 work on my iMac with my images and LR catalog on a Seagate external HD. When I opened LR on the laptop and attempted to open the catalog on the external HD it wouldn't open and I got the following error message:  "Lightroom cannot launch with this catalog. It is either on a network volume or on a volume on which Lightroom cannot save changes". Then it give the location of the catalog which starts /Volumes/HD drive name/Lightroom/Lightroom 5 catalog.lrcat.  I saw a posting on the forum with a similar problem but that involved going from LR4 to LR5. One of the responders suggested copying the lrcat file onto the desktop and open it there. I did this and the catalog opened in LR. Not sure why it would open this way and not using the "Open Catalog" in the LR drop down menu.   I was able to back up the catalog and now my desktop has the lrcat and lrdata file plus a folder containing the backups.  I want to keep everything on my external HD.  So I have two questions. 1) Anyone have any idea what the error message means? and 2) Can I just delete the lrcat and lrdata file on my external HD and just copy the files on my desktop to the HD?  Please be kind, my 10 year old niece knows more about computers that I do.

99jon, just made a major discovery based on more research. The two old drives are show a NTFS Windows NT File System format. The newest one shows Mac OS X format.  I understand that the HD has to be formatted properly to be used on a Mac. That kind of solves the problem but raises a new set of questions. How in the world would it work on my other Apple computers if they are formatted for NTFS.  I've never used these on a Windows computer. Based on my reading it seems like I need to copy all the files over to the new Mac OS X formatted drive then reformat the old drives in the Mac OS X format.  Your thoughts?

  • Lightroom 5 Catalog Won't Open - PLEASE HELP

    Hi,
So, my most important lightrooom catalog won't open and I don't know what to do. Screenshot below. I guess it didn't shut down before I ejected my hard drive.

Look in the backups folder, there should be several folders that are dated, look in the latest date and open that catalog, depending how much time was between the last back up and your last work, will determine how much work you lost.
What I recommend (hind site here) is once you get your catalog open is save a catalog first in a location easy to get to, normally where your old corrupted catalog was. then select all images then save. (ctrl/cmd-s) This will write the metadata to your files on the drive or side car files(depending how you set it up and if they are raw or jpg. ) Then you will have this for a backup, as you will know that all edits you have done are in the metadata, therefore you can create a new catalog and import all files to get back to where you were.
That said, use this method as a last case scenario, normally using a back up catalog would be good enough. However, if something happened to that main folder, like corrupted segments on the drive, you would have your images to fall back on, or at least those you can access.
But if your backing up to an external drive, you should be alright anyway.
I tend to go over board with backing up since I had a drive that crash a few years ago.

  • LR2 Catalog won't open

I just installed LR2 on a PC running Vista (32-bit w/ SP1). Install went ok, and I was able to xfer my old catalog from LR1.41. The catalog opened and I could see my photos. Then Vista shutdown unexpectedly. (Probably something I was running in the BG -- I don't think it was a LR thing). Now, the new LR2 catalog that was created from my old catalog won't open. I get the following message:
"Lightroom cannot use the catalog 'All Photos -- Save2' because it is not writable and cannot be opened"
"This could be caused by incorrect permissions or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog. You may try to correct the problem or you may select a different catalog."
I'm not sure what to do here. I looked at the proerties for the catalog file and it is not read only or hidden. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks
    Mike Whalen

Yes, there is a .lock on the extension of the lrcat file. Since I am new to vista I don't know how to remove the lock.
I can't seem to open the old catalog file either (with LR2) it is also seems to be locked. I'm not sure why they are locked or howe to remove it, but this seems to be my problem. Does anyone know how to remove a file lock in Vista?
