Lumetri effect slow with openCL
Hi,
I'm running Premiere Pro cc 2014 (8.0.1) on a new Mac Pro (3 GHz 8-Core, 64GB ram, 2x AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB).
I'm having trouble with the Lumetri effect (custom grades created in speedgrade and roundtripped back to Premiere) and OpenCL. Whenever I have the effect on the playback framerate drops if I have OpenCL enabled. When using the software only engine the playback is fine.
I've seen a few similar posts from a while back but not solution other than turning OpenCL off. Any new work arounds at all?
cheers

Yes, you can apply LUT's directly in PrPro. The way I found to is to get the free RedGiant "Lut Buddy" program ...
http://www.redgiant.com/products/all/magic-bullet-colorista-free/
It only lists compatability up through CS6 but works every day in my latest-CC version of PrPro just fine. Available both for windows and macs, once installed it gets onto the "Effects" pane's "Video Effects" section as "Magic Bullet Colorista". Click on that, the only sub-listing is "LUT Buddy". Double-click on that, and up in the source-area go to the "Effects" tab, and you'll see " fx LUT Buddy" there. Off to the right of that line is an icon sort of like an arrow pointing at a dialog box. Click that icon, you get a really old-style dialog that allows you to import LUT's, and navigate to them. You can of course then use controls of that effect in PrPro to control it's ... strength? ... and stuff.
Sometimes LUT's that I can apply in Sg and come back to PrPro within the saved project don't like working direct in PrPro, and I've had a couple that work here but Sg doesn't like. Most LUT's do work, however.
You can also use this sub-program over in Ae, to copy the effect of the visual controls there into a LUT or to do a "draw pattern" of your program monitor and then a "read pattern" to create a LUT directly from your work in Ae.

After I spent 45 minutes waiting to be transferred to to right department with the support chat, only to find out technical support isn't available during the hours I called, I am going to try this outlet to get some advice:
I have about 50 video files to export, each 20 seconds to 2 minutes long. They all have Lumetri effects on them (I suppose that's what causes the problem).
I can render 2, maybe 3 videos without problems. The next one might be fine for a while, but then all I get is strobelight frames, flickering, and different color frames. One time I even received a blue screen of death. I restart Media Encoder, add files to the queue, same thing happens. 2 - 3 will work, after that it exports garbage.
I am using Premiere Pro CC to edit the video, Media Encoder CC to export it.
The original footage is HDV 50i - 1440 px by 1080px - 1.333 pixelr ratio.
Besides some dip to black and cross transitions the only other effect is a title layer with some static color effects on it, and 2 Lumetri effects (warm midtones and dream 1).
I thought at first maybe it is because I encode in FLV, 1800 mbps, but also when I used uncomressed AVI with the same settings as the original footage the same problem occured.
I have two ATI radeon HD 6950s 1GB in my pc hooked together with cross fire, 16GB ram, the project file is on a SSD, the raw footage on a HDD. AMD Phenom II x4 processor with 3.4 GHz.
OS: Windows 7 64bit.
I did update to the latest GPU driver last night - that didnt fix the problem.
Since I noticed the fans becoming quite loud during rendering, I did put two Ice packs from the freezer on top of the case and pulled it away from the wall a little bit to allow for better cooling (and it did stay a lot cooler with the ice packs).
I do also get funky looking frames inside Adobe Premiere after trying to watch the footage with the Lumetri filter for a while. I'll have to restart the program and it'll work fine.
Any suggestions what I could do? Settings, or something? I dont want to attend to my machiene for so many hours, importing 2 video files at a time, having to review each of them for errors. I'd rather set it up once, and let them all render...@Peter Garaway:
Thanks for the response.
I use two Lumetri effects:
Warm Midtones
Dream 1
Both applied directly to the clip of raw footage which is in the sequence that gets exported. There is actually one sequence, where I fixed some of the footage putting it into another sequence first, then the sequence into the final sequence that gets exported.
All my clips have both Lumetri effects applied to them. The flickering took place randomly, but it would definitely get worse the more I attempted to render (the first 2 to 3 no problems, on the 3rd or 4th maybe a few flicker seconds in the middle, any more would be 100% flickering - if any flickering or only like a green solid...)
Now Shrishti from tech support insisted the problem was within the sequence. And that kind of made sense, because once we successfully rendered one sequence, there would be no more trouble rendering it a second time, even if the program was already in flicker mode. And also for some reason while we were playing around with it when one sequence failed, even after restarting Media Encoder, it would fail again afterwards.
However last night after it failed I would just try again, doing 2 at a time and it would be successful.
Now I say it failed, but of course no errors no nothing... Just as in the result didn't look the way it was supposed to.
Also I want to mention that especially when I kept it running after it failed (meaning you leave it runnning, producing only garbage) the fans of my computer kept running louder and louder. Not sure if it was the GPU or CPU. Rigth now it keeps rendering in Software mode and the fans are barely louder than under normal usage.
I use the AMD catalyst driver which I downloaded from here:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonaiw_win8-64.aspx
While Shrishti was trying a couple of different settings at one time the screen went dark, as it came back on there was a message coming from the windows tray, saying the display driver had crashed, but recovered. One time I also received a bluescreen message, which I will try to attach to this post.
well i guess it doesnt have too much information on there other than... what is that? a memory address?
This happened I believe after the first attempt with the updated driver (I updated from 13.3 to 13.4 ) -
How do I export a frame with the Lumetri effect applied?
I've done some color correcting in SpeedGrade (dynamic link in Premiere as the Lumetri effect) and I want to use the Export Frame button in the program monitor in Premiere. It seems like this would be a trivial task, however, I can't seem to export a jpg, png, etc. that keeps the Lumetri effect applied. The exported frame is always raw, back to the frame's original state, missing the adjustments applied by the Lumetri effect. What gives? Is there something I'm missing? Shouldn't it be as simple as clicking this Export Frame button and you get what you see in the monitor, or is this a bug? Also, I've tried through Export Media and Media Encoder to no avail; the effect is still bypassed when exporting single frames/image files. Video works fine.
Anyone else experience this and have a solution/workaround? For the time being, I've resorted to Command+Shift+4 and taken a png screen grab that way, but it would be nice to be able to export the frames directly from within Premiere.OS X 10.9.5 Adobe Premiere CC 2014.2 Release 8.2.0 (65) Build ...I just did a quick test with a different set of footage in another version of the same project, and it is working. Went back to the original version I was having trouble with, and of course, now it also works. I cannot replicate this problem again. Possibly something funky happening with Direct linking at the time I was having the issue? I restarted my computer and everything, though, and it was still there. Maybe if this happens to someone else they will find this thread and leave a comment with a little more insight as to what's going on.

What is Causing Lag with Lumetri Effect?
I get some lag when I add the Lumetri effect, I was wondering what is causing it?
My system:
3930k overclocked
32G Ram
SSD for media drive
Please watch the video below.Bart Walczak answered my question and it worked!
Try turning off your reference monitor and see if the lag persists. -
IMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9
Hi,
My 2010 imac (i5, 4G mem) has been pretty slow since mavericks - the system seems slow and unresponsive with even simple operations seeming sluggish (my 8yr old core 2 duo laptop with 10.6 was way more responsive).
I came across the thread Re: iMac mid 2010 slow with 10.9 and hoped I might be able to get some advice.
I have previously reinstalled the system from fresh to see if this would help - and while it did for a while it seems to have become slow again.
I tried starting in safe mode and it didn't seem very different. Some operations seemed slower and the window redrawing was really choppy and a bit weird (not sure if this is usual in safe mode?)
I noticed that while I was running EtreCheck and perhaps also Diskutility just now (after running the imac in safemode and then restarting it) that the Finder kept restarting. All the icons would vanish and then reload in the finder window and on the desktop. I haven't seen this before.
I have installed and run EtreCheck and the results are below. If anyone could give some advice that would be really appreciated. Thanks
EtreCheck version: 1.9.12 (48)

thankyou for helping. I think I have managed to follow both steps below. The errors that are occurring related directly to the finder crashing - I am not sure if this is related to the general slowness but it would be great to fix.
Thanks

Hi guys,
I am using AE Effects CS6 (11.0.4.2) on a new Macbook Pro with these specs:
2.8 GHz Intel Core i5
16 GB MHz DDR3
Intel Iris 1536 MB
The problem I am having is that when imported footage is visible as footage or a layer, AE becomes very slow with every click of the mouse on either the timeline or the footage in the viewer itself causing the color wheel to appear, often for 30 seconds at a time. Strangely, dealing with the composition has no issues.
Any ideas guys?
Thanks in advanceTry transcoding the footage to a production codec and see if that makes a difference.
Like, use the Adobe Media Encoder to make them something like QuickTime with the PhotoJPEG codec.
See if that helps with the performance. -
Lumetri effect not working after 7.2.1 update
The Lumetri effects applied to past sequences show up as Checkered patterns in the preview, when relinking the presets to the LUT when they are applied to a clip in a timeline the timeline freezes and displays black. Basically all my prior sequences to 7.2.1 are non usable, Any thoughts?
Don't know that it's connected ... but in the last "update" something somehow changed so that if I apply a LUT or Look in Sg that isn't already ALSO in the PPro Lumetri-effects folder, PPro can't 'see' that section of clip. Got the ol' red checker-board thing.
Tried it with a couple other "looks" and yep ... they have to be in BOTH PPro and Sg program folder-trees or it's broken. Before ... anything I did in Sg showed up in PPRo without problem, and clearly ... a decent numbe of the LUT's and looks I'd used were only in Sg's folder-tree.
So ... yea, got to learn where those two trees are and sort through copy/pasting everything in the Sg one into the PPro one. I'd asked a question of whether they also need now to be copied to Ae, got no answer from anyone. I guess I'll find that out later in the week when I get over there again.
You'd think the "common folder" thing, used for quite a bunch of things by Adobe, would be the "natural" home for cross-program shared "tools", wouldn't you?

How can I retain Speedgrade Lumetri effect on a Premiere clip when dynamic linking that clip to Afte
I'm trying to streamline the workflow between me (editor) and the animator at my office.
Right now we are exporting clips as ProRes files to be tracked and rotoscoped by the animator in AE and then dropping them back in Premiere. We work off a server so it would be much faster to simply dynamic link my clip that needs screen replacement animation into an After Effects comp. Then the animator could open that After Effects file on the server and do their work then just save it so it will automatically repopulate in my timeline with the tracked shot.
The problem is here. I want to color correct in Speedgrade before animation so I'm not having to track around screens. So I color correct and the clips come back to Premiere with the Speedgrade Lumetri effects applied. Then I dynamic link to AE. But when the tracked shot returns from AE, the Lumetri color effect is completely lost, which causes me to have to re-color and track around the screen replacement animation.
Does anyone have any tips for this? The help is much appreciated.I just responded to this on another thread, but let me repeat it here for convenience:
Like you, I too (and I presume most everyone) first send to SG for color correction and then (actually after another SG trip for grading) replace with AE comp for effects work. And when I try that with my CC 2014, I have the same issue (all SG effects disappear after replace with AE comp). But I believe I've found a simple workaround (at least working great so far):
Instead of replace with AE comp, open AE and drag the PP comp to the AE projects - it will appear like a clip.
Create an AE comp with that and do your thing.
Save as AE project and import it into PP - it will appear like a clip that you can use in PP (as if you'd done a replace with AE comp).
Everything will be dynamic: if you change the SG corrections, the changes will get reflected everywhere (in AE as well as the AE project imported in PP), and what you do in SG will apply BEFORE the AE stuff, which is exactly what we want. Looks like Adobe put all the capability in, but the replace with AE comp is not making use of it yet - I will report this.
One other related issue is that for some weird reason, you can't drag the imported AE project in PP onto a PP sequence, BUT you can select it and ask to create a new PP sequence! Go figure. -
Crash when opening window within PP (usually for Lumetri effect)
Hi there,
I often get this problem where if I open another window, say the file explorer when using a Lumetri effect or the settings box for Neat Video, the whole PP window becomes unclickable (I get that "ding" sound wherever I click, which in other programs usually indicates that there is another window open on top, eg a 'Press OK' type box above Firefox). When this happens, I usually open Task Manager and try to end the program. 50% of the time this will cause PP to crash and just dissapear. The other 50% of the time, the Save File dialogue box will appear and if I click Cancel, I can get back to my work.
I can't really recall when this issue started. Most likely within the last three months.version 2014.1 (the latest version)
Windows 7 64bit
Happens with any footage
No error message. Just dings.
Usually I have on Skype, Spotify and Firefox. Don't usually run any other professional programs concurrently with PP.
I have third party plugins, such as FilmConvert, Neat Video, Magic Bullet suite.
My PC is run by a Core i7 overclocked to 3.9ghz, 16gb ddr3 ram (very recent upgrade from 8gb), GTX 680, OS is on SSD.
I am using Mercury acceleration. -
Lumetri Effect Freezes Premiere Pro Picture
Hi there.
I am exploring the wonder of Direct Link. I have applied a LUT to a clip in SpeedGrade. I then direct linked the sequence back to Prmiere where the clip shows the Lumetri effect in the effects control panel. The problem: Premiere will not play back the clip that has the SpeedGrade changes applied. The audio plays, the CTI moves along it, but the playback stays frozen on the last frame of the previous clip.
I also tried my LUT to an adjustment layer in SG and still Premiere does not play anywhere that the Lumetri effect is present.
I am working on a new Macbook Pro Retina 15" with 2 gb of Vram and 16 GB of memory.
Thanks!
JohnnyYes, you can apply LUT's directly in PrPro.

Preview slower with hardware GPU acceleration enabled than software only?
Sorry if this had been asked before.
But somehow my preview/playback was slower and choppy once I enable the hardware GPU acceleration(I mean I select the 'mercury playback engine gpu acceleration' under Project-Settings-General')
I followed the following tips to enable my graphic card, (thanks David)
http://www.studio1productions.com/Articles/PremiereCS5.htm
I was working on a clip of approx 3 mins long with majority of the footage(1920 and 720) from a DSLR, some 1920 clips from gopro hd2 and some 1440 clips from a P&S camera(scale to 1920 to match the sequence setting). main effects applied (magic bullet looks).
Before I enabled my graphic card and selected it from the project setting, the preview was ok, nearly smooth all the way except some sections with dynamic links, but once I turn it on, the preview became ridiculously choppy, I couldn't believe my eyes, so I turned it off (select mercury playback engine software only), did playback again, it became much smoother!(or just as smooth as it was when it was under that setting, it's just that comparison gave me a bad impression of my hardware gpu acceleration).
btw: I'm running on a low spec laptop
Core™ i7-2670QM 2.2GHz turbo to 3.1GHZ
8GB DDR3 memory
NVIDIA GeForce 555M 1GB graphics
750G HDD(I partition to 150G system drive and 600G media drive) 5400RPM (I know, it's slow)
currently have about 80G and 400G empty space on two drives respectively.
15.6” HD display (max resolution 1366x768)
I know the machine is not a proper workstation to work with CS6, but the hardware gpu acceleration was slower than the software only gpu acceleration was beyond my understanding, not a minor difference we are talking about, it was much much slower!
Have I done something wrong?
Any tips would be appreciated. Here's my guess.
MB Looks runs on the GPU at all times, though not in the same way as Adobe's 'accelerated' effects. With CUDA off, the graphics card was free to process the Looks effects at full speed. With CUDA on, PP took some of those resources and Looks processed slower.
Remove Looks and replace it with PP's native accelerated effects and you'll see what all the hoopla is about. -
Hello.
I have a problem with my OS, is like slow, when i turn on it, sometimes de minimize effect is slow with the finder, and the dashboard too.
I dont open heavy applications, just Adium, or Messenger, Safary and Itunes.
I have 2 gb, 2.4ghz C2D.
Thanks for the help.

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.
If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins. -
My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
HELP PLEASE
Very worried!!Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo). -
Kwin works slower with Xorg 1.6. Why?
I've noticed that kwin works much slower with xorg 1.6.1 and fresh ati drivers than it used to with the old one. I've got radeon r9000. It worked normal with the previous Xorg. The problem is not only with kde4 but also xfce compositing. So if anyone knows what has changed in xorg's work with ati r250 let me know.
p.s. i've read the wiki. tried different settings. no result
Last edited by vampiro (2009-04-18 21:09:56)I'm having a similar problem, but with any desktop environment. After a _lot_ of troubleshooting, I can say it is 100% the ATI 7.4-2 driver and/or X 1.6.1
It seems to be a major thing, as most X 1.6 problem threads have something to do with an ati video card.
Here is my original (sorta) post.
