Lumia 1020 doesn't focus up close (macro)

According to the specs, the Lumia 1020 should be able to auto-focus as close as 15cm. However, my phone consistently has trouble focusing that close. Typically, if the subject is between 15cm and 25cm away and I hold down the shutter half-way to focus, or touch the screen on a focus point, the focusing system temporarily focuses, but then immediately "pops back" out of focus.
SOMETIMES I can focus up to around 15cm, but it's not consistent and so I've been finding it difficult to get macro shots in general with the phone.
Has anybody else had this problem, or is possibly just an issue with my specific phone?

I've never managed to get as close as 15cm,  I've so far been standing further back and then digitally zooming in. if you have bright light then the technique works exceptionally well
some of the bods have been getting some great shots using the manual focus, have a look at this thread from a while back
http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pictures-and-Videos/Lumia-1020-impressive-camera/m-p/2124983#M10511
I've had the phone since the 17th Sept. and it's a great camera but I think it needs a different mindset, it's not as simple as just point and shoot.  One thing that struck me on using it after an SLA is how wide angle the lens is, it's like shooting with a permanently attached wide angle lens,  and I think this is the cause of the problem.
I think I need two extra elements to make it into an awesome macro machine.
1)  something like this http://www.olloclip.com/    to refocus the lens onto a small area.  (if you couple this with the 1020 camera, it would be amazing not far off a small microscope)
2)  an app that will save your manual setting as a list of favorites so you don't have to constantly set them back up each time you turn the camera on.

  • Lumia 1020 focus issue

    Hi there,
Recently my Lumia 1020 struggles to focus unless there is a lot of light - it especially struggles with close or distant objects.  Medium distance around 2 meters away in a lot of light seems to be the only conditions where the autofocus can nail it in one go.  What is worse, the manual focus seems to have stopped working.
I am on Nokia Camera v 4.5.1.7 and have the Black update.
As someone who keeps promoting the Lumia phones to people I know, this flaw is deeply embarrassing when I try to show off the camera.  And as the camera was the primary reason why I bought the 1020, this is also very frustrating.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
ps. I've done a factory reset twice already on my phone to resolve various issues and I've had to send my phone back to the factory once because of an issue with the speakers so I'm afraid if I have to reset my phone again, it will put me off this product for life.

hi mate if it doesn't vibrate this would point to a hardware issue possibly. in this case i would check that i am up to date with the latest firmware along with the latest Nokia system app updates from the store, and try performing a soft reset. failing that, a hard reset, and then nokia Care if still no luck.

  • Lumia 1020 Owners - What is your iPhoto Workflow

I really want to start using iPhoto fully to manage my photos. I have my images from my past two phones in iPhoto already and that's all fine. They were the Lumia 800, and then Lumia 520 as a cheap stop-gap when my 800 broke whilst waiting for my next phone..The Lumua 1020.
I now take all my photos on my Lumia 1020. This combination of the 1020 and iPhoto has a few stumbling points:
The Lumia 1020 doesn't geotag the 38MP images, only the 5MP
iPhoto import doesn't seem to work on it's own for me
Combination of the Windows Phone App and iPhoto allow successful import, but of both the high res and 5MP versions (Still with the same Geotag problem)
If you have a Lumia 1020, what is your workflow you follow from taking your photos, importing, tagging them etc?
I don't mind too much if I end up saving both versions of a file but would like to avoid it with as little hassle as possible, I don't really want to have to tag each image twice (Once for the 38MP and once again for the 5MP).
Some things i'd like to be able to do:
Ideally only keep the high res versions of the images, without having to manually exclude the 5MP versions every time I try an import (Yes I may miss out of some of my reframed photos, but I rarely re-frame except when quickly sharing a file - I can edit the originals once in iPhoto if I want to crop etc)
Auto tag the high res versions of the images with a keyword of say "HiRes", to make it easier to find them when printing
Somehow get the Geolocation to work on the 38MP images (I may end up writing some custom code myself to copy the tag over, something would possibly run on the phone, but I haven't looked into it yet)
I tried out the Nokia Image Importer for Mac. It works well, but it does import the 38MP and 5MP and then just drops them into the file system. Although that has some advantages, i',m looking to embrace iPhoto as my photo software, as I assume I can export to file system later anyway.

I don't use the Windows Phone app from Microsoft to import pictures as it doesn't get date and time right for movies. This is my workflow:
    1. Import all pictures and movies with Nokia Photo Transfer. This software is more lightweight than the Microsoft app. And it gets all dates and times correct.
    2. Drag all files into the app Houdahgeo and geotag everyting using reference photos. The highres pictures get geotags from the lower res pictures without any problems. If you have taken photos with a DSLR or any other camera you can geotag them this way also.
    3. Import only the highres pictures to Iphoto.
    4. Delete all pictures manually in Lumia 1020. This is a lot easier since Lumia Black. And finally I delete all photos from the temporary folder that I imported to with Nokia Photo Transfer.
This is way too complicated compared to say an Iphone. With my Iphone I acomplish all of the above with two clicks.
I am not sure but I do believe that the highres pictures where geotagged by the phone in earlier versions of Nokia Camera. I sure hope they will solve this issue. There is already too much work importing pictures.

  • Lumia 1020 auto focus in video when used in apps.....

Hi. If I want to take a video clip up close using the Nokia Lumia 1020 on WhatsApp or Skype, the auto focus just will not fire. It stays zoomed out, and is only useful for taking clips really far away. This is incredibly frustrating given that I bought this phone for the camera.
Is this a bug in the phone? or is my phone broken?
Auto focus only works when using the actual camera app. Skype and WhatsApp seem to ignore the "auto focus" setting that I've turned on in the default camera app and the Nokia Camera app...
    Really disappointed.
    Jez

not sure as i haven't used those apps myslef, but for example, if you use Vine, there is a setting in there that allows you to lock the focus. it appears to me that auto-focus isn't automatically enabled / enabled at all in certain apps. you will need to contact the developers of the apps themselves for further feedback, as this is a user to user forum only for Nokia products and services.

  • Lumia 1020 focus assist light wont turn off

lumia 1020 focus assist light wont turn off. i've done a hard reset and a soft reset. ive also drained the battery but the little round light continues to be turned on .
i checked and it looks like ive still got warranty from nokia. will they still honour the warranty if ive updates the software?

I have the same problem, I tested everything, hard reset, soft reset, using recovery tool to back to Cyan version, still the light is ON..  what is tyhe problem, it is ridicolous that Microsoft/ Nokia do not give an answer to this problem as many users have the same problem........

Hi, alekswithkz. Just to verify, when you say hard reset, do you mean: Settings>About>Reset? If yes, you can try to download and use the Nokia Software Recovery Tool before considering sending the phone for repair.

Note: The link is from Nokia US. If you are in another country, feel free to download the app from your local Nokia website.
If the issue remains, it's best to have it examined by an authorized Nokia technician. This will also determine if the repair will be covered under warranty. Warranty period starts on the date of purchase. Please bring your receipt for warranty verification.

  • Pro camera update on Lumia 1020

    Hi all
Just downloaded the pro camera update for the Lumia 1020 and am impressed,  Macro seems considerably better,  if you switch to macro mode they seem to fixed the issue where it popped out of focus,  it also seems a lot faster to shoot as well.
One slight gripe I have is that I can't find any release notes for the new app, I want a list of what's been fixed and what's been added but I can't find anything apart from the little demo when you start it up.  But I want detail lots and lots of lovely techy detail.
Also saw the tweet about RAW support coming after Christmas...awesomeness continues...

    Hi all,
When I did the update for my Lumia 1020 from Pro Cam to "Nokia Camera" I lost the ability to zoom & reframe images.
Did they change the way they save reframed images or are other people experiencing the same issue?
    Thanks,

  • Lumia 1020 Freezes, Battery Heating Up, OS Crashes...

Hi there everyone, this is my first post here, I hope I can get some help from you guys regarding my problem with my lovely Lumia 1020.
10 days ago, I received my Lumia 1020 ( it was a gift from a friend from Norway), I live in Iraq. So warranty isn't provided here cause I went to Nokia Care in my country, they checked the IMEI and they told me that this phone wasn't imported by them, so no warranty is provided for it.
Once I powered up my phone, completed settings,  it checked for an update and asked me to download it. And sure I did download it at once!. Kept updating until it reached the latest Lumia Cyan Update. Checked and saw I have a WP 8.1 phone.
Took some photos, here and there, everything was going good. Plugged in the charger to charge my phone. Then an hour later I went to check the charge and I was surprised to see my lovely Lumia 1020 heating up like crazy!!! .. I'm talking about severe heating, not a normal one due to charging.
Plugged out the phone from the charger ( original Nokia charger provided with the original box ), and I tried to unlock it, but no way! it doesn't respond to anything at all, Glance screen was stuck at the time of an hour ago. Quickly opened my laptop and googled the issue and did a soft reset at once. Then put the mobile in front of the air conditioner until it cooled down. Time/Date was reset ( very annoying ) but everything was normal ever since until at some random time, the phone freezes. Sometimes it doesn't heat up, I wait for 5 minutes or so and the phone reboots by itself. But there are times that the phone is stuck for hours ( no heat though ) so I have to soft reset it manually. And there are times when the phone freezes and heats up like crazy and I soft reset it on purpose being afraid that something might happen to the phone.
Googled everywhere, tried everything: Replaced charger, Replaced SIM card, Tried Airplane mode, Factory Reset, Nokia Software Recovery, Disabling Background apps, Disabling/Enabling Location w/wo NFC, Deleting FB & Skype, Disabling Glance & Double Tap to wake, Downgrading to WP 8 ( both Amber & Cyan via Nokia Care Suit ), ... etc everything software related has been tried. And the phone still freezes randomly. Which leads me to say that it's definitely a hardware defect that is causing these issues as my friend has the exact phone, everything enabled, and not a single freeze.
I'm desperate here, if anyone of you could give me an advice, I would be thankful.
Thanks and sorry for the long post!

I'm sorry to hear about your troubles with it.
As you mentioned here, you've done everything that can be done to your phone software wise, and it still plays up.
And as you further mentioned, it's related to hardware failure.
As your device is not covered by warranty in Iraq, you will either have to pay for the repairs down there or send it back to your friend in Norway who can then send it in for warranty repair/replacement.

  • Lumia 1020 - Disable Post Processing?

Preface:  I've only had the Lumia 1020 for 48 hours.
Problem:  I've noticed that when taking pictures with the Nokia Pro Camera application, the preview after capturing the image is awesome.  If I then go to look at the captured image, there is a short pause, and suddenly the picture goes soft, detail is lost, colors become horribly skewed.   It would seem that there is some massive post processing being done after the image is archived.
Request:  Is there any way to disable this post processing?  It's taking wonderful pictures and destroying them.
I'll see if I can take a screen capture to show what I'm talking about and I'll post again after work.
    Lumia 1020 Quirks.
    - Post processing done even on "raw" 34MP images.
    - The entire screen is powered when using Peek. Despite being OLED and Nokia specifically stating otherwise.
    - Can turn on (but not off) camera in the background on a call. App doesn't open but shutter does and spins up CPU.

So after looking at the 5MP version (attached) it seems that it is indeed post processing it after the fact and saving it that way.  Which begs the question.... Why?  Isn't the photo review going through the Nokia Pro Camera app anyway?  Why is it doing post processing (I've also had it remove red-eye automatically when reviewing photos)?
Stil, I want to know; how can I disable it?
*Edit:  Trying to attach the large format photo as well...
*Edit2:  After uploading both and flipping back and forth between the "review" image, the 5MP saved image, and the highres saved image, they are all the same, meaning that it is doing the post processing as it is saving the 5MP & 34MP image.  This means there is no way to truly undo it.  (It also means things like auto-redeye reduction are permanent, and can't be undone, tweaked, etc.)
    So.... thoughts?

  • Lumia 1020 touchscreen registering ghost input (an...

I was looking to get some guidance on whether the issues I'm experiencing with my Lumia 1020 are known hardware/software issues, or indications of defective hardware that I should get replaced under warranty. My Lumia 1020 is an AT&T phone in the US.
The main issue I'm having is, on occasion, the touch screen seems to behave erratically, registering input even when I am not touching the screen. I can't seem to figure out how to reproduce it reliably, but it seems to happen at least once every day. The phone seems to think something is touching parts of the screen, as it launches apps, types garbage on the keyboard, bounces the lock screen up and down, etc, all without me even touching the device. And of course, when I do touch the device, it either doesn't register, or 'fights' with the ghost input, and basically doesn't do what I want.
The only partial solution I've found is to try and turn the screen off and on a few times (just pressing the power button normally -- not doing a full reboot). Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't. But overall, this issue is extremely irritating and problematic. Has anyone else experienced something similar?
Now, in addition to the touch screen issues, I continually find that hte battery indicator is not accurate, even after a full charge. It regularly reports significantly lower than what I think the actual charge is, and when I reboot the device, it seems to correct itself. For example, the phone is plugged in and charging over night, but when I unplug it in the morning, after a few minutes it shows it is down to less than 20%. I reboot the device, and sure enough, it's back up to 97%. Known software issue, or do I have a bad device?

Hello guys, I also would like to report a problem with my Lumia's 1020 touch screen. The problem occurred the very first day I started using it. Please see the attached images for reference.
    1) Usually, the first row of live tiles starts right under the time that is located at the right upper corner
    2) After the problem appeared, all the tiles are shifted down by approx. half size of the smallest tile. I can drag all the tiles back to its normal state, but when I press back button ("<-", located at the bottom) to get back to a default arrangement of tiles, I again get back to the situation where all tiles are shifted (please, see pictures).
    3) My phone software versions are on a separate print-screen.
    4) Software restart didn't help and I have these gut feelings that the issue is on a hardware side of the Lumia 1020, probably digitizer's firmware.
    5) I had similar issues with Lumia 920 which I had to return due to its touch screen problems.
I would be very glad if this issue could be resolved for me.

  • Having problem with the Lumia 1020 camera

I got my Lumia 1020 today (from ATT). The camera worked fine when I took some pictures with auto settings. Then when I decided to change the settings the camera apeture closed completly as it was taking a photo...but didn't open again. And still doesn't open. I tried to do factory reset and nothing. Still having this problem. I tried to see if there is any update .. nope. I went to Settings --> Applicatoins and on the camera option there is a Reset Camera. I press there but nothing happen.
So now everytime I open the camera I see just a black screen with no options on the screen.
    Is anyone having this problem?

    Hi nrabishek,
    Welcome to the forum!
When did the camera issue start to happen on your Lumia phone? Is it for a 1020 as well, or for another Nokia Lumia phone? Did you try doing the same troubleshooting steps mentioned in the previous post? You may try doing the other fixes shown at this link: Nokia Lumia 1020 - My camera is not working correctly.

Hi, I have purchased the lumia 1020 a month ao and I find the following problems.
    1) The phone restarts automatically about 15 times a day/
    2) when running apps such as nokia cam or Here drive, the phone freezes. I have to wait for the battery to drain down and then boot the phone again. Until recently i found out how to do the soft reset.
    3) while taking videos, the phone does not capture the audio. The same thing while recording audio, the phone doesn't seem to record voice.
    4) When on a call, and I switch to speaker phone, I hear the person on the other line, but the other person dont seem to hear me.
    5) I feel that the camera compared to my 808 pureview is pretty inferior. I gte a lot of yellow mixes and the photos are quiet blurred at 2X zoom. Even tried with a tripod. the pictures come out Blurry.
Nokia customer care in Canada sucks. All they tell me is they cant help me out.

The reframe function in the Nokia Camera app on my Lumia 1020 overwrites the original full-res image when saving after a reframe.
I have Lumia Black and Nokia Camera app v4.5.1.5
There was an earlier post that Dec versions of the Nokia Camera app would solve the problem or that turning off Skydrive auto-upload would solve the problem but those didn't work on my 1020.
Nokia Support always tell you to reset the phone but since that is not guaranteed to solve the problem, what are options can Nokia Support offer?

Just checked this and it works fine for me. I can reframe and save, close the app then browse the gallery, open the image from there and zoom out again to the full image and save.

  • Lumia 1020 not detected via USB on Windows 7 PCs

Hello - I hope you can help.
My new Lumia 1020 is not detected on any of 3 Windows 7 PCs I have access to. When plugged in the phone will begin to charge but the PC does not detect the phone at all  - it doesn't appear under device manager in any guise (no portable devices or unrecognised devices).
    OS 8.0.10517.150
    Windows 7 64 and 32 bit
I have follwed advice on similar threads and been through the nokiatechsupport.co.uk troubleshooter on the issue which took me through the following:
Install Windows Phone app for Desktop
I just get the 'connect your phone' screen despite restarts of both phone and PC. Also tried switching the phone off and then plugging in = same result.
    Factory Rest
Same result - phone is not detected, nothing appears in device manager.
I've also tried installing the Nokia software recovery tool but that doesn't see the phone either.
Have tried different USB ports on all PCs.
Any help much appreciated, otherwise next step is talking to my network support I guess?
    Thanks
    Iain

    Go to Solution.

Use the USB cable that came with the phone.  Have you always done this?
A device that is under lock screen may not be detected and drivers will not load.
The desktop phone sync program provides nothing that will help the phone be detected.
The phone has to be seen by the PC and identified. When this happens the drivers are downloaded from the internet for the phone. Having the drivers does no good if the phone is not identified by the PC.
If you have access to other Win7 or 8 PC's try connecting to them. If you take it to anybody that is the first thing they will do. This helps determine if it is the phone or the PC.
If you take somewhere use Nokia Care.
One thing I saw today, user having the same problem. On the phone, start an app that connects to the internet, like a news app. Then connect the phone to the PC.
There are phones that won't connect.
You should see it in windows explorer. It should install in 'portable devices' in the device manager.

  • Micro SD Card for Nokia Lumia 1020

I work in a photo printing lab and over the years technology has changed in many different ways. Customers have moved from the old film cameras to digital cameras. But now they are moving from digital cameras to phone cameras. This move is because of the improved image quality.
I was very excited to hear of Nokias new release the Lumia1020. The image quality of the 1020 has far surpassed anything else on the market. This was the phone that I've been waiting for.
But as I work in a photo lab and deal with many customers with many different types of camera phones. I see the difficulties most of them have with printing a few pictures. Bluetooth is very slow. Using a cable works only 5% of the time. infrared doesn't work anymore on most of the new machines.
But 50% of the phones use SD CARDS. Its simple, fast and the most efficient way of printing your images.
The phone that I've been waiting for, the Nokia Lumia1020, does Not use SD CARD. I hope I've received the wrong information about this phone. For me it is essential to actually print the photographs that i take. And without the use of an SD CARD i would find it difficult to do this.
If the Nokia lumia 1020 specifications are correct. Then I'll have to wait a little bit longer to upgrade my phone. If anything happens to my Nokia N8. I'll have some serious decisions to make.
Can anyone prove me wrong on the Nokia lumia 1020 specifications?

"Not strange at all that lower end support sd .Built in memory vs sd card is all cost."
I still would say that a more expensive line should be worth the cost since as customers we are paying a premium for it. So although it is "all cost" customers deserve more since we are paying more.

"Most memory cards are mounted internally which requires removing the back cover and in most instances the battery."
If Nokia would put their minds to it Im confident that their clever engineers would be able to provide a hot swapable solution somewhere externally at the same time make it look good and not interfere with usage ie needing to take battery out. Woulnt this just showcase another of Nokia's engineering prowess?
"I can upload my pictures to skydrive..."
If you were to take many hidef pix, movies etc, how long would it take to upload to skydrive as compared to transfering an sd card onto your pc? Or even putting in a blank memory card a making immediately available huge numbers of GB?
"Removing a memory card to transger data is old school"
I have to go the other direction. Adding memory card support only adds more fuctionality to the phone. Adds more room to install apps, add more room to store music, vids that you can keep with you. Adds the ability to add virtually unlimited storage to your phone. And dont forget the cost of data from your network provider when your away from your wifi.
Scenario I like to have my phone stocked with the apps I like. Now this uses some space. I have pics and vids of nice memeories I like to keep with me on the phone and I like to keep a lot with me thus reducing the fixed storage of the phone. If Im outside taking pictures/vids, the more I take the less my avaliable storage becomes. Isnt it a very practicle thing to do that I whip out a memory card and viola 64GB of storage without needing to shut off the phone.
Now isnt that a big plus? If more space does not equal a plus then why would MS charge you more for more skydrive space? Its because its a premium. You might say "how on earth are you gona use all that space on the phone and on skydrive?" Years ago people also thought 200GB was massive for a HDD. You will find a way to use it. And if you cant use that space others will.
