  • Lumia 920 proximity sensor not working

It's a 5 months old Lumia 920 and already the proximity sensor stopped working!!!
When i make a call or receive a call, when i place the phone beside my ear, or cover it with my hand just to check, nothing happens! The phone screen doesn't go black, it stays active for the entire time and the phone charge drains like crazy.
Guess it's a hardware failure. Still if anyone has any suggestions, i will appreciate much.
    Thanks in advance.
    BR,
    Saad

I've had the same problem. The screen won't blank during a call (like the proximity sensor isn't detecting my face/finger/hand). I keep hanging up on people with my ear. I've taken to locking my screen before putting it to my ear but anytime I get another call / text / voicemail / calendar notification / alarm while i'm on the phone (which happens a lot still) it lights the screen up again and makes it where i'm able to hang up with my ear.
I've factory reset, and had the phone replaced TWICE already. I'm on my 3rd Lumia 920 (and they all have the same issue!) This didn't happen until the most recent firmware update...so I think it was a problem created when they were trying to fix the other proximity sensor issue where the screen stayed on black all the time during a call.
Rebooting does fix the problem temporarily, but it always comes back. I'm tired of hanging up on people and hoping for a new model device from AT&T but they're giving me **bleep** at the moment.
TLDR: Factory reset, replacement devices don't fix the problem. It's a firmware bug. I'm on my 3rd 920 with the same issue. Extraordinarily frustrating.

  • Lumia 920 - Proximity Sensor

I have a Nokia Lumia 920 in black from Everything Everywhere (Which I have paid to have an unlock code and use on o2 UK) for the last week or so it appears the proximity sensor has been playing up. As soon as I make a call, answer a call or use Skype the screen turns off and I can only end the call by promptly pressing the power button and then quickly hitting the end call button before the screen turns off again.
It appears to me that the proximity sensor is detecting that the phone is still by my face even when I hold it away.
Is there a way I can diagnose this or will I have to send it in for repair?
If it goes in for repair, will it remain carrier unlocked as I paid for this?
    Thanks,
    Jamie.

Hi - I had this problem with two, yes two successive 920 handsets.  Maby I was unlucky, but elsewhere online I can see that alot of customers have had this problem.  Amazingly, it does not seem to be a software problem, but a physial problem.  Dust gets actually under the glass.  You may be able to see it by the front facing lens.  The problem about ending calls happen becaue dust settles on he proximity sensor which is housed just above the N on the Nokia at the top right of the handset.  I know this sounds crazy for a top of the range smartphone, but it does seem to be the cause.  The shop I used allowed me to change to an HTC One without any quibbles. I was sad because I really lilked my 920s but not being able to finish a call is a showstopper.  I thought of persevering with blowing compressed air at the top of the handset, but eventually concluded that if the phone is that bad after three weeks then there is no way it will last the duration of a 24 month contract!

  • Lumia 1520 proximity sensor

After update to 1028.3562.1402.0001 last week, proximity sensor stoped working properly. It works OK right after I restart the phone, but sometimes after half an hour or sometimes after half a day it stops working - screen stays on during a call and glance peek doesn't work.
    Any suggestions??

@playfulangel14thanks for getting back.. I've got Glance background installed, following my first post and a reply from @musica it helped, but the problem restarted after a week or less..
I've checekd the phone for software updates and there isn't anything pending either in the setting/software update or regular app.. all are up to date to wahts availbe in my region. The only thing thats been slving my issue (temporarily) until it comes back again is the soft reset, and I've been doing it atleast once a day for the last month.. today, I'vealready done it twice and I jsut observered that the sensor again stopped working.
I've even tried to hard reset the phone to everything of its factory settings a couple of weeks or more ago, but that didn't help either.
    I'm clueless of its state...

  • Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Hi, I hope someone can help me here.  I've got a huge problem with my brand new Lumia 920.
When I make a phone call, or accept a phone call, it seems my phone locks the screen completely, as if I had it next to my ear (i.e. the proximity sensor), even when I don't have it anywhere near my head.
I cannot end a phone call, or switch to loudspeaker etc. - nothing.  It is highly annoying, and I have no idea how to fix it.
I have done a soft reset, but to no avail.
I had a bluetooth headset connected earlier in the day, and then disconnected it.  This phenomenon did not occur prior to using the bluetooth headset.  No idea if this can have anything to do with it, but it seems a strange coincidence.

I have exactly the same problem! I am kind of happy, I am not the only one with this problem!
First thing I did was factory resetting the phone. Of course this wasn't the issue.
Then I thought that my proximity sensor isn't working at all - but then I started testing it. I went into a room without a light and then went back to a room with a light and display automatically adjusted the brightness. So the sensor works.
Then I stared a phone call (screen become black) and then I put the phone just few centimeters from a light bulb and the display adjusted brightness and I could see all normally (like it should work if you don't put it near you head). Can you try this and tell me if you get same result?
I would conclude that sensor should be somehow trimmed, but I sure don't know how to do that.

  • Proximity sensors not working in lumia 520

My proximity sensors not working during calls . Pls help me fix the bug. I updated from amber to lumia black

my wife had the same issue, even though it didn't look like it was covered, and the screen protector has a hole there, the cosmetics seem to create an invisible barrier, and once I cleaned it well, the sensor was working correctly.

  • Proximity sensor Lumia 925

Dear Lumia people... a question regarding my Lumia 925.
My phone is a few months old (about 3) and today I saw my call screen didn't go off when talking with some one.
I thought my proximity sensor died so I tried the glance feature where you wave to call the clock and it's working just fine.
I do use a screenprotector but I doubt that's causing the issue since the screen refuses to go off when I put it next to my ear. I also tried covering it with my finger but no such luck.
Does anybody know what's going on? I'm sure it's not dust either because if the sensor was blocked then the screen would go off always!
So, anyone? What to do in this situation?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If it is already cut around it then it isn't the screen protector. Try rebooting the phone and see if it helps To reboot, press and hold the vol down + Power buttons for around 10 seconds until the phone vibrates and restarts. If the reboot does not help then you might want to try a reset and failing that, then you might want to get it checked out at your local Nokia Care Poiut because it is more than likely a hardware issue at that stage.

  • Dust in proximity sensor!!! Lumia 920

Dust has seemed to work it's way under the top part of the screen and it is affecting the proximity sensor, when in a phone call. When I start a phone call the screen goes black instantly and the screen is then unusable until the other end hangs up. I know it's dust as I can see it under the front camera cover as well.
Is this something that Nokia can clean out? Or can I have a local repair store fix it without voiding my warranty?

Today I tested the rubber stopper on my Lumia 920. Rubber stopper works fine and it doesn't silence the earpiece, BUT first of all, you should cut off two-thirds of the stopper (be careful not to loose the piece when you cut it off because it is so small) and plug-in only the hat + about 5mm of the base with the ring on it. If you cut off the ring the stopper wont be properly hold in the socket. Hope you can see it on the image. Hat+base+ring

  • Amber broke my proximity sensor? Lumia 920

    Hi folks
My phone has been working fine since March but after updating to Amber tonight my proximity sensor has stopped working. Peek doesn't work and the screen no longer turns off if I hold the phone to my ear or cover the sensor. There is no dust in my FFC so I don't think it's that, plus I made calls earlier today and the sensor was still working.
I've tried 2 soft resets but they haven't helped, is my only option a hard reset? I don't want to lose all of my app data

Seems like a hardware issue to me. Get it checked at Nokia Care centre.
    Best Regards,
    Ayushmaan

  • Proximity sensor reacting too close causing droppe...

I have two Nokia Lumia 800 phones and they react too close with proximity sensor causing screen to become active so when I am outdoors in brighter light calls are auto-dropped when my cheek touches the end call button on the screen. I have compared my two Nokias in Diagnostics and they react at exact same distance (around 3 cm) and I have also compared them side-by-side to another LG E900 Windows Phone in their diagnostics where it reacts 2 cm further away (around 5 cm). On the LG calls are never dropped by mistake. Would it be possible for you to change this distance in upcoming firmwares so calls are not dropped as easily?
If I am indoors in darker light or at night it is not common to see it, but during summer time and during more light it is more common I have noticed.
Workaround I have currently is to disable the screen auto on/off feature by pressing power button once after answering or calling. if you do this manually it is disabling proximity sensor screen on/off until you press the power button again.

I find it completely ludicrous that Apple can interject on this thread and say it's received too many posts and has to be shut down and a "new" thread started. Really now? Seriously? Couldn't they also simply pop in and post 'hi guys, we hear you and are working on it' ...or something to that effect? That's my main complaint really is the deafening silence. What they're basically telling us is to complain all we want, if we don't like the phone then return it for a refund ...that is if you still have your original defective phone, for all you that already swapped phones, you're beat and are stuck with our mistake for the next 2 years when you'll be upgrade eligible again. ...WOW, thanks for the statement without technically releasing one. ...I think we're all left in the dark because Apple really doesn't know what is going on with the sensor, they can't and or won't release a statement without getting the facts straight. ...but we all know one fact is straight...the sensor is dysfunctional and that alone deserves an acknowledgement. How are we to have faith in Apple to fix the issue when we're left to believe they don't think there is one.
...btw update on "my fix" ...deleting all your photos and putting the phone in your arm pit and then under your pillow is only a temporary solution, for mine sensor is on the fritz again. ...shaking my head, if only this were
    funny.

  • Disabling the Proximity Sensor

I frequently use skype on my android to do video calls, and sometimes I want to tab out of the call to look something up in my browser. Unfortunately, when I tab out of the video call, skype seems to register the call as an audio call and switches on my proximity sensor.  This is annoying, as my fingers trying to manipulate the screen will instantly turn off my phone's screen while I am trying to use it, and then I have to swipe to unlock the screen once I take my finger away from the sensor.
I am wondering if there is a way to disable the proximity sensor for skype. Turning off the phone's proximity sensor in the call menu does not disable the proximity sensor in skype, I have tried this solution. I use an unrooted Galaxy S4, if that is at all relevent.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Even if you do not know for sure, any ideas anyone can toss out may help me in figuring it out myself.
    -Andrew

I've seen the Krusell case for the 5800 and although it has 2 holes cut out at the top, they are for the camera and light sensor. not the proximity sensor which is still covered up. Another case i've seen (PDAir has one long hole cut out going from the light sensor to the camera. this ones seems to work ok as the proximity sensor is not covered. an easy fix is to cut the strip of leather out dividing the camera and light sensor. Depends whether you're willing to cut up a £20 case.

  • Bad Reception, Muffled Bluetooth Voice, Crazy Proximity Sensors

I would like to start a new thread to summarize all major the problems of the iPhone 4. Apple has to either release a software update or just do a total recall for all iPhone 4 users. Consumers should NOT be responsible for the time they have wasted to troubleshoot the device, paying the restocking fee or buying a Bumper Case.
    1. Antenna: In spotty area mostly running 1900 MHz band, the iPhone 4 reception degrades until 1 to 0 bar when the hand or any conducting material has blocked the bottom left of the phone with a notch on the stainless steel antenna.
    2. *Muffled Bluetooth audio quality:* where the listener has no way to hear a clear voice at all beside a muffled voice with low volume when speaker is using a Bluetooth that is connected to the iPhone 4. It happens to various Bluetooth headsets on the market including the Jawbone, Jawbone Icon, Plantronics 925, Sony, Motorola, and more. The muffled sound does not occur consistently. Sometimes is clear, but most of the time bad.
    3. *Proximity Sensors:* Not sure if the sensor is located on top of the ear piece. During a phone call using the ear piece, people are experiencing trouble with the screen goes on and off and the face controlling the screen unintentionally which leads to hang up, mute, and other types of accidental operations.
These are critical issues that affect normal phone calls and iPhone 4 has failed to achieve anyone of them.

Really sorry to burst into your discussion, but I can't find any way of asking a question.
Like you, it's my first smartphone and I am really frustrated with it too. Am awaiting delivery of a new phone today due to its inability to connect to the internet or for me to get email.
But today's frustration is this and it's a really urgent query that I'm hoping someone can help me with quickly before the delivery man arrives.
Having spent all day Sunday getting my contacts sorted out, I'm nervous about losing them. So installed ovi suite this morning and apparently successfully to copy my contacts etc through content copier. It said it had saved them to
C:\Users\Karen\AppData\Roaming\Nseries\ContentCopier\2009-07-23Nokia N97 (2).nbu. However when I went to look for the folder AppData, it doesn't exist and I can't find it anywhere.
Any idea where it may have gone and what I can do to get my contacts onto my pc. I've tried going through the mass storage route on the phone, but then the folders that appear do not hold the contact details anywhere.
I am desperate (in so many ways ;-)
    Any help gratefully received

to see the Appdata folder on your pc you need to Show Hidden files and folders.
using windows XP (not sure about vista) goto My Computer. on the menu bar, select "Tools" then "Folder options", then "View". select the option that says "show hidden files and folders"
Another way to get the contacts from your phone is using PC Suite. Select the "Contacts" function in pc suite.
once this opens, highlight the contacts you want to copy and go to "File" and "export"
here you can export your contacts as a text file or as a csv file for that you can open in Excel etc.

  • Nokia Lumia 920 Proximity alledgely repaired quest...

Hi, everyone knows about the proximity fault on the lumias, I have just had mine so called repaired by Nokia and now a week later its gone again and is worse than ever, so it is going back to Nokia for repair again. Obvioulsy im not happy like a lot of people here. Has anyone else had there phone so called repaired then its gone again?, How many times have you had it repaired etc?,did you get a replacement handset?

As far as I'm aware the problem with the proximity sensor is usually caused by dust getting under the screen. So I would hazard a guess and say that the Nokia repair centre has merely cleared the dust away from the sensor. If the problem has returned then I'd imagine that more dust has found its way under your screen and is blocking the sensor again.
