Lumia 800 - Gorilla Glass

Hai,
I've been going through specs on several sites and cannot confirm if the Lumia 800 which technically uses same body as the N9 has the shiny Gorilla Glass?
No NFC, uSD, Front Facing Camera (or 3G video calling to say), HDMI, USB on the go like the N8 (my current phone) are still ok not a huge deal breaker imo as the Lumia 800 still looks awesome and has WP7 which I have been waiting for a proper hardware manufacturer to make one so far to actually get one.
But Gorilla Glass is one important aspect for me due to the extended nature of the display which will indeed make it prone to all those unwanted daily usage scratches.

Not to get too off topic here, but I wouldn't call Symbian Anna a huge step forward (or even a major update) and Belle has been "coming" since I bought the **bleep** phone. It took more months than expected for PR 1.1 to be released, and 1.2 took what seemed like an eon and included mostly minimal performance/functionality tweaks and almost no UI changes (except for turning off my auto-text-finder in messaging as default for some stupid reason). It was, in all respects, more of a disappointment than the saviour update I was expecting (new browser, stability fixes, faster camera, updated music player, refreshed UI). And as for Nokia Labs - yes, they write some great applications. Its a shame that the app store isn't full of the same great application (or ANY for that matter). I think the best app I managed to buy was the JoikuSpot tethering software (which should've been a free app that was built into the phone ecosystem), and that's just sad.
Don't get me wrong, the N8 is the best phone I've ever used and will go down alongside the N96 as one of my favourite nokias ever made, but it will always be tied to the memory that "hey, this could've been 10 times better and 10 times more successful". I remember promises about the N96's networked gaming, though I don't remember any actually decent games being released, ever.
I want to also point out that whilst the N8 is the best phone I've used, the other phones that I've used are all just above average (iPhone 3/4/S, Galaxy S2, Desire, Galaxy, Storm, Bold) and are nothing special in any of their own rights. Sure, they're relatively better than most other phones, and some have this nifty feature or that nifty feature, but no single phone (except perhaps the 4/4S) is actually a solid release, and most other phones are sh** anyway so who cares if those phones are better. Better than what? **bleep**? The technology still has growing pains, and it won't be until Nokia release a 4G N-series phone with WP8, Skydrive, 32gb SSD, 1gb RAM, 1.6ghz single/double chip w/ 10 mpx CZ camera & 1080p recording that STILL retains a full day/two days battery life and interfaces directly with the files on my home Windows 8 PC that the market will be, in my opinion, mature and ready to take hold of the consumer's attention again. Unfortunately, there's this mindset that the "consumer" is an idiot and needs to be told what they want, and heaven forbid if they voice any ideas for improvement - "you don't know better than us!"
Back to the Lumia 800 - again, I totally understand from a business perspective why this phone is being released and marketed, I do, and it will make some money and will effectively reposition that imaginary thing called "public opinion" (ie: the media). What it won't do is get everybody talking about Nokia's new line of Windows phones for longer than a few weeks. You guys had a major opportunity (basically free advertising with the excitement around WP7 + Nokia) to completely revolutionize the tech industry's image of your products by releasing a truly different and solid WP7 phone. Instead you released a gutted N9. Nice.
My apologies if I'm ranting (and I think I may be) - I'm just passionate about Nokia's product offering and find it extremely frustrating that such a large and experienced company keeps making the same mistakes over and over again (alienating their long-term supporters in the process). Grow up, you've been in the business a while now!

  • Lumia 800 broken glass

I suggest anyone with a Lumia 800 should put a screen protector on.
This was my 1 week old Lumia 800 after it slipped out of my pocket while I was sitting at a restaurant. It fell only about 1m but it landed face down on to a tiled floor.
It looks like it must have hit on the corner and that shattered all the glass.

Seems this could be a problem as there are lots and lots of people reporting smashed screens after minor falls.
I had my nokia 800 for about 6 weeks, when I took it out of my pocket, it slipped out of my hand (from hip height) and smashed. I couldn't believe it.   For the first time ever, I had phone insurance so for a £50 excess, it was repaired.
I have only been using it again for about 3 weeks - yesterday something unbelievable happened.
My phone slid off the top of my handbag, very slowly and from a height of no more than 6 inches onto a hospital floor, and the screen smashed!  This time I can still see some things on the screen, but I can't use it.
I cannot believe it - surely a mobile phone is meant to be used and handled. I'm now wondering if there's a fault in the design of my casing (which DID have a protective cover on), because this is absolutely rubbish.
I have always had nokia phones and my N8 had some serious knocks and was always fine.
Come on Nokia, is the 800 to be admired or used?
For what it's worth, I love the 800 - it's the best phone APART from its incredible fragility.
    ANY suggestions?

Maybe check first what is under "Contact Us" link on Nokia support site????
    1. Facebook link - I do not use
    2. Twitter link - I do not use
    3. Link to this forum. So I came here directly from nokia support link on Nokia.com under support for lumia 820
Did YOU read guidelines from link you posted??? I see not!
    So couple of quotes:
"Here you can discuss Nokia products and Ovi services" - I wanted to discuss product, so this is correct forum!!! Was I expecting my screen will be replaced for gorilla??? No! Just wanted to discuss!!!
For sure you did not see this point:
"4. Show respect. Please ensure that all of your posts contribute to the supportive atmosphere of the board. "Flaming" or disrespecting other board users is not allowed. For more specific information on what Nokia considers disrespectful or inappropriate, see below. "
You wrote @simply because the 820 is not associated with a 'gorilla' does not make it inferior to lower models@ - IT DOES. Gorilla is known as scratch resistant, tough glass. This place these screens much higher than others.
Now, show me any OFFICIAL nokia statement that glass used in Lumia 820 is scratch resistant or is anyhow more resistant for damages than any other glass??? Somehow I cannot find official statement. So all other statements are rumours only.
This is link to official Lumia 820 spec:
    http://www.nokia.com/ie-en/products/phone/lumia820/specifications/
, somehow I do not see any statement that screen has improved resistance.
"The forum team includes technical experts from Nokia, who monitor their respective areas on the forum. Their main task is to make sure that the right people at Nokia know what is discussed here, but they may also participate in the discussions and publish information from Nokia about the issues discussed here. They are labelled as "Technical Experts" and bear a Nokia logo."
So not only user-to-user but also user-to-nokia experts that are able to place official statements and explanations!!!
You should watch your mouth before placing these kind of statements @another whiner. having limited knowledge can be a bad thing. having no knowledge at all can be embarrassing.@.
Pretending you are smart doesn't make you smart at all. It is only your imagination.

  • Nokia Lumia 820 Glass Smashed No Gorilla Glass

I bought this phone, only received it a few days ago and today its broken, i dropped the phone once and the whole glass is smashed now.
Was quite disapointed about this because i was under the imprssion that it had gorilla glass only to find the glass gets smahshed when dropped from a low level around knee level. Its also disapointed as i was an owner of Lumia 900 which had gorilla glass which i had dropped a few times since i had it and it never got a crack or anything. Very disapointed with Nokia as i went for the 820 because of the changable covers and the SD card and slightly smaller size. If i had known about no gorilla glass i'd never have got the phone, what a waste of money, i recommend not buying this phone as the screen broke way too easy.
What i'd like to know is how much do new screens cost for this phone, and i mean genuine ones from Nokia? or would i need to go to a care point? or are they available online somewhere on Nokia's website?
    thanks

Well I come home and opened my door on Friday night and my 820 Lumia drop from about knee height, put it on charger when got inside next morning went to get phone not working I found it had cracked Screen. Ok was the drop last night. So here I am with a $658 product from Nokia that's been made with little thought for the consumer. A phone that cracks the glass from a minor drop. The glass goes right to the edge of the phone, the phone is as heavy as a house brick.
I have taken it to be repaired it will be ready in 3 days at a grand cost of $180.00... I need my phone going thats why I brought it. Nokia Don't Care is a good Slogan, I took the phone back to Harvey Norman they didn't care, just advised me take it to a phone repairer in Penrith to get it fixed faster. Let's see what happens.
I will send Nokia a Bill for the repair because of the way they have designed this machine it is not fair to the consumer to have to have a weak machine like this. And I wished it would have happened within 21 Days I would have took it back to Harvey Norman, under consumer law you can not sell defected machines like this to people. Glass screens breaking so easly is not accpetable. It's daylight robbery, there working like crooks. I am in the right mind to take it all back to Harvey Norman and let them have the Phone and Optus Account as I only had it three months.
I should ring the Police. If some one steals something valuable they can goto goal. If a company like nokia robs you because of faulty products  they just ignore our complaints.
I am really cranky withnokia because of the Screen on this phone

  • Broken touch screen on Nokia Lumia 800

I bought a Nokia Lumia 800. I also got an insurance along with it. Recently the phone fell from my pocket and landed on the top right corner to the floor. The so called Corning's gorilla glass cracked. I went to the nearest Nokia care and asked them to repair it. They took a month just to reply to me (after so many follow-ups) that they cannot do it in my city (I live in Pondicherry, India) and had to send it to New Delhi fo repair. Even in that they were not sure if it will get repaired. The following statement is from an email from Nokia Customer Care.
"They’ll try to solve the issue. If it is repairable, they’ll repair. Otherwise they’ll return your handset without repaired. If they returned your handset without repaired, they’ll charge rs.175 for transportation expenses"
When i asked them what if they cannot repair it, he asked me to be positive... So the problem here is in many levels
    1) Why did the phone glass crack from a fall of such short distance? The transmission of impact was from the body directly to the glass....(photo attached)
    2) Why is there not enough support from Nokia Lumia 800 yet from all the service centers?
    3) I am made to wait for more than a month with a cracked mobile phone......
    Attachments:
Photo of the 359289042195848 Lumia 800.jpg ‏866 KB

    1) Gorilla Glass is 'Glass' and it can break/crack with impact, it is extremely robust, not indistuctable .
2)All service centres cannot supply full support everywhere, i have to have my Nokia sent away for repair in the UK if I have an issue and can take up to 30 days, so you are not being singled out and this applies to other makes as well.
3)See 2 and also if you have insurance as stated, and as it would never be considered a warranty issue as it was misuse by the user, contact your insurer, the issue is with them, if you paid for insurance, they are the people to contact ?
    Good Luck

  • Cannot End Call Nokia Lumia 800

    Hi Everyone,
I cannot end phone calls with my Lumia 800, Please can someone help? I hate having to turn my phone off to end the call.
    Thanks
    S.Griffiths

to end the call ,you probly :
1)dropped the phone very hard on the ground check if the glass is a little higher than usual.  Sometimes after dropping the phone to the hard ground, the glass can be lifted a little bit and that impact the proximity sensor function.  In many cases, it can be fixed by pushing that part of the glass back.  Just give a push by your thumb and see if that happens still.. This helped me a lot and its working
2)The upper right corner of the glass may be too dirty, please clean it and see if the issue is still there.

  • Lumia 800 touch not working and battery question m...

I have been quite happy with my two months old Lumia 800 until recently when I accidentally dropped it on cobblestone and damaged the glass. Although the phone still worked I ordered a new combined glass, digitizer and screen from an internet supplier. The spare part was OEM and it was relatively painless to replace the old screen with the new screen. However, after replacing the screen, touch did not work and a question mark appeared over the battery icon. I searched the forum and other places on the internet and found out that this type of issue had been seen before and that it in some cases could be fixed by an upgrade of the firmware and a hard reset.
Now a few frustrated days later I am starting to think that possibly the replacement part is faulty as I have tried various firmwares, various ways to charge the battery with various types of USB chargers, but still no success. The phone simply won't respond to touch. Currently I am on firmware 1750.805.8773.12220.
Would any of you in the forum have any ideas what could possibly be wrong? Could it be a broken cable to the screen? I had similar issues with an iPhone 3GS which turned out to have a dodgy ribbon cable connecting the phone and the digitizer, but I cannot seem to find anything on the net mentioning this as a potential problem and I am wondering just how likely it is that the part is faulty, when the screen works fine and only the touch functionality is not working.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. It is very difficult to get in touch with Nokia in Denmark as their support phone is not working and the websites chat functionality seems to be off line all the time.
    Best regards,
    Anders

You shouldn't have used the phone at all after it dropped in Water.
Only Nokia Care can assess the extent of damage and tell you the repair cost. First, they should accept the device for repairs..and Second, this is certainly not covered under Warranty ..
Even if the phone is repaired with replacing a few components, not sure about the effect of the seepage on other parts which may start acting in a short span ...

  • Does the Lumina 820 have Gorilla Glass or equivale...

I am really liking the new Lumina 820 and it sounds like it could be one of the best new phones for the money.  One issue is in the specs it does not state it has Gorilla Glass.  Maybe that is an omission (the 800 has it) or maybe an equivalent "tough" glass is used?  If not this would be a deal breaker as I am not wiling to go back to using stone age screen protectors!
    Thanks, Mike

  • Gorilla Glass is worthless

My Lumia 920 is a month old.  It fell out of my coat pocket just 2 feet off the ground and shattered the glass.  I had a Samsung Captivate with Gorilla Glass for two years.  It probably fell to the ground 30 times and never even scratched.  I saw the videos online of the guy running over the 920 with his car, batting it with a 2x4, dropping it multiple times from various heights, and even bashing it with a hammer.  I think mine was defective.  AT&T and Nokia say - too bad so sad. Got quotes of $130 - $300 to repair. I will try the $130 first.

I had my Nokia 928 less than a month after switching from a HTC phone, and it slipped from my hand and hit the ground on the bottom right hand corner. The screen immediately cracked halfway up the display and a piece of the screen was lost. I was understandably dismayed that the "unbreakable" gorilla glass had shattered so easily after my HTC withstood 10 times more impact than that during the 2 years that I used it. The screen still worked, so I continued to use it while I decided whether or not it was worth paying $100 in addition to the monthly insuance fee to replace it. I literally sat it down on my desk at work, and the screen cracked all the way up. I might mention that the actual casing of the phone never sustained a scratch, crack, or damage of any kind. Only the gorllia glass. What does that tell you??
I am sure that I will NEVER buy a Nokia again, and I will not replace my Nokia, but instead go back to my HTC that worked flawlessly for two years. Never again.

  • Is NOKIA MOBILES HAVING ORIGINAL GORILLA GLASS?

HI , I bought NOKIA LUMIA 720 four months back it got a touch screen issue . I submitted it to nokia care where it took 1month for getting back. It was returned in a good condition than i expected . But recently by mistake i dropped my mobile while walking and the screen was broken into more pieces  compared to a normal glass. Now i doubt the strength or gorilla glass..... and have a bit doubt that some misplacement happened when i gave my mobile in care................

gorilla glass is  more scratch resistant compared to normal glasses, that's all...
    CAN I BREAK GORILLA GLASS?
If subjected to enough abuse, Gorilla Glass can break. However, Gorilla Glass is better able to survive the real-world events that most commonly cause glass to scratch, chip, or break. (taken from: http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/faqs)

For everybody's information, whilst the trademark "Gorilla Glass" is not mentioned in Nokia literature concerning the C7-00, the glass used is exactly the same material.
Gorilla glass is a trademark owned by "corning".

    Dear All
I have a question about email accounts on the Lumia 800.
I have two email accounts, one linked to our website (pop 3) and also my personal Live account.  The account linked to the website can only receive (it costs more and thus was deemed unnecessary). This system has worked well in the past, just reply or forward using my Live account.  This has worked on my pc, laptop, Iphone etc.
Now the question, how do I choose which account sends on the Lumia?  As I can’t seem to select between the two, I currently have no means of replying to or forwarding mail received in the ‘website’ account.   I have tried messing around with settings in both accounts, but to no avail.
Apologies in advance if I’m just being an idiot but any help would be appreciated.

  • Nokia Lumia 800, Depleted battery Won't start up.

Hi,  After being away for home for 5 days with no charger for my Nokia lumia 800, I foolishly allowed it to run out of battery, Unaware of the problems this can cause due faulty hardware, thanks to Nokia I returned home and plugged the phone into charge. I have allowed my Phone to run out of battery many times before in the past as you wouldn't expect any problem to come of it. After many hours of the phone being on charge I went to turn it on, it vibrated and came up with the phone providers image then no further, it stayed on this image for hours until I held down the power button and  it would turn itself off. Not being to worried at this point I went online to the many chatrooms, helpline, youtube videos you name it to source a solution. Having tried absolutely everything, about 10 times nothing has worked to multiple button combinations, heating the phone up, plugging into PC with zune - everything. Now slightly worried as I really do want this phone to work and not have to buy a new one at a great cost.  This is not a problem I have cause, it's a problem with Nokia, and the manufacturing of the phone, So if no one on  here will be able to aid me in fixing the phone, once I return to the UK I shall take it into a Nokia store to get it looked at, which i won't be happy to do as many of the Nokia outlets are in unconventional locations such as Glasgow.
Thank in advance for any Help which is much appreciated,
