Lumia 830 Specs: Which model? RM-984 or RM-985

Hi,
Can we get a clear indication of the model described on the specs page?  Ideally, for all phones where its relevant, but in particular for the lumia 830?
The specs for 830 (shown here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/mobile/phone/lumia830/specifications/) don't specify the model (RM-984,985,or something else).  However, I have read there is a big difference in LTE band support between 984 and 985.  In particular, the "international version" (984 i think, being sold on Amazon) doesn't seem to have the bands necessary to support T-mobile (1700/2100 and 700).  If you read the specs page, you might get the impression that ALL 830's support these bands.  Then perhaps go out and buy one that does not, and be mightly disappointed for the misinformation.  "Thanks Microsoft".  Again, its kinda confusing for consumers out there.  Can someone who knows clarify which model is being described?
Secondly seeing as MS owns this thing now, can we pleae get some clarity around it on the specs page(s)?  Same thing is true with some other phones I have been looking at, like the Nokia 1520 -- multiple models, different band support, missing details on the specs page, that could easily lead one to buy the wrong thing.
Thanks!

Any time you are not purchasing a phone provided by the carrier and you want to use it with that carrier it is up to you to do your homework and make sure you get the RM version that that has that carriers frequecy bands.
There is more than one discussion on the difference between the 983, 984 and 985 when you search the web.
http://forums.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-830/317284-nokia-830-rm-984-985-what-differences-print....
For the 1520 there is only the 940 and 938 that counts.
940 is the AT&T version, 32 or 16GB with PMA charging
938 32GB and Qi charging AT&T and T- Mobile LTE bands

They all are, except that models made in October 2009 and later can't be set up or configured from 10.4.11.

  • Another request for Lumia 830 Denim update information

I have the AT&T variant of the Lumia 830 and am waiting for a firmware update to fix two issues. However, there has been no communication as to when this firmware update will be released. I have only a short window to return this device and if I do not know when the firmware will be released, I would prefer to return it now and buy something else rather than waiting for several months. Let me be clear. I'm looking for specific availability dates and not a vague assurance that it's coming "soon" and that I should keep checking to see if it's out. If this information is not available now to Customer Support, please make the effort to reach out to the responsible team that does have this information. Even a date range specified in terms of days, months, or weeks would be helpful, along with any details that can help us understand why there is a delay. Of course, even better than knowing the release date would be having the firmware update pushed to my phone today. So that you can understand why I am eager to get this update, I've provided additional information below. I realize that this issue has been raised in other threads, but I'm adding as much detail as possible here so that I can refer to this post from support calls and any attempts to escalate my issue.   My Lumia 830's details Settings > About > More InfoOS Version: 8.1.14176.243Firmware version: 02040.00012.14404.07019Settings > Extras+InfoSoftware release: Lumia DenimManufacturer name: RM-983_1001 (AT&T variant) If you compare the AT&T variant to all other variants of this device in North America, you will note that the AT&T variant IS NOT RUNNING THE CURRENT VERSION of firmware found on all the other North American Lumia 830 variants (as of 6/29/ 2015): Canada    Lumia 830Country variantDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830Bell MobilityDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830RogersDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830TelusDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001United States    Lumia 830Country variantDenim8.10.14234.37502040.00021.15063.02001Lumia 830AT&TNot available yetNot available yetNot available yet  Specific Problems with the Current Firmware There are at least two specific problems with the outdated firmware available on the AT&T variant. First, the Lumia Camera application does not work and second, the Netflix app will not play videos. Lumia Camera app does not work Lumia Camera is an alternate camera app from Microsoft for recent Lumia phones that provides additional features that are unique to Lumia devices. However, when you start Lumia Camera (version 2015.507.1236.978, last updated 5/13/2015), it displays an error message: UPDATE YOUR PHONE.Lumia Camera requires the Lumia Denim software update. Your phone automatically notifies you when it's available or you can check now by going to App list > Settings > Phone Update. As noted previously, the phone reports that it is running Lumia Denim under Extras+Info, but this appears to be an early, incomplete version of this firmware. Netflix will not play videos When attempting to play ANY video in the Netflix app (version 4.1.0.16, last updated 3/2/2015), you receive the following error: Whoops, something went wrong…System Configuration ErrorThere is a problem with this system's configuration that prevents Windows from playing protected video. For example, a Microsoft Support Engineer noted on the Microsoft forum site that: Lumia 830 shipped with Denim already from the factory (and many of the "Denim" features, like Live Folders, were already included) - but in order to use the new Lumia Camera version, this slighly smaller software update is needed.   It looks like this issue has been known and the fix has been available on some European variants since at least February, see The UK Lumia 830 gets Lumia Camera 5 and.... a working Netflix!. Paul Thurrott also notes that "the version of Denim that shipped with the Lumia 830 was not the final version" and that that the firmware update is needed for Lumia Camera in Lumia 830 + Denim: What You Get, What You Don’t. There are also many other threads about this in the AT&T support forums such as:Full Denim release for Lumia 830?Lumia 830 Denim Firmware UpdateLumia 830 Firmware updateand (amusingly):Lumia 830 Firmware update hostage crisis continued - day 184 We live in a world where continuous delivery has become standard in software engineering and it is extremely disappointing to see that timely releases of software to maintain our devices is such a low priority for AT&T. With customers holding onto devices for only two years, it's unacceptable to leave a phone partially functional for six months or more. I have gone to some lengths to document this issue and I expect at least a similar level of effort from AT&T to try to help me and all the Lumia 830 owners experiencing these problems. Thanks in advance, Mike

Thanks for replying. While I was half-hoping that my lengthy plea might have been the straw that broke the camel's back, I can't say I honestly expected AT&T to change their policy and suddenly start delivering more timely releases of firmware updates with greater transparency about the process. As for me, I only had a small window of time to return the handset to AT&T. Having heard nothing, I figured that the safest course of action was to buy a carrier-unlocked RM-985 from a reputable retailer. After it shows up tomorrow, I'll still have time to return the AT&T variant. With Windows Phone 10 arriving shortly, this should ensure that I get that upgrade at least a month or two before users with the AT&T branded device. I'll also be able to lower the monthly bill, so that's a big side benefit. It's unfortunate that this is how AT&T operates. I imagine that they get more than a few returns of the device from people who couldn't get Netflix working and this has to be costing them some money.  It certainly makes Windows Phone/Microsoft look bad as well, although they did ship the device with buggy firmware in the first place, even if they did provide a fix.  Supposedly with Windows 10, Microsoft will no longer be allowing carriers to block phone updates, so the situation should improve. M

  • Lumia 830 prototype... conflicted on whether I sho...

I got a notice through WPCentral that Lumia 830s were being sold at $379 by a seller named truedigital. I purchased instantly.
...a day before it arrived, I learned that all the 830s being sold by that particular seller were prototypes and got a little worried. It arrived in perfect condition, seemed to work like a charm and even had support for LTE on AT&T.. but it had Debian Red instead of Denim (which I was told was the 'internal' name for Denim). I felt a little better about my decision as I discovered people were importing "legit" 830s and lacking LTE support on US carriers.... but there's been two persistent bothers...
...my phone shows up as an id317-2 instead of RM-985... and the mobile operator listed is Claro (Operator Code 1007)... which doesn't seem to affect my calls, MMS, data, etc... but DOES seem to be regionally locking me out of software such as the Live Lock Screen Beta and the recently released Glance update. It actually tells me the Lock Screen beta "Isn't available in the store" when I'm sitting here looking at the damn thing... and the Glance update simply gives me the generic and horrendously vague "App not available" screen.
I got into a similar predicament when purchasing a Lumia 820 which I wasn't told was a store demo unit. No matter how many times I reset the 820 it went into demo mode... but Nokia Software Recovery Tool wiped that demo crap and got me running with some usable, official AT&T FW... I haven't been so lucky here with my 830.
After waiting a couple days for NSRT to have it's server issues resolved, I plugged up my 830 and it told me "Cannot read data from selected phone". I've been told the Nokia Care Suite could be the answer to flashing my 830 to simply have the same Denim that other international 830s have... should I continue trying to get Denim here, sell this thing or just be happy I got a low-cost 830 that works on my carrier's LTE?

    Be happy.
Sometimes, the Microsoft Store takes its time to get clearance for apps for certain models. I would wait till Christmas and then ask again, if Live Lock Screen is available for other Nokia Lumia 830 owners. However, I am not very much into US consumer rights – and whether that wait is going to kill some of your rights. By the way, which Nokia Product Code is shown in the Nokia Software Recovery Tool?

  • Just purchased a 15" Macbook Retina Which model do I have?

    Hello everyone,
Today I was lucky enough to purchase an open box 15" Macbook Pro Retina from Best Buys for $1200 (With some store manager employ discounts ) and I wanted to know which model I have. For example from the first day they released the 15" Retina how many models or changes did this product have? Now I compared it to the tech specs on Apple.com and I'm just confused with the graphics details. Here are some pictures of the details of my Macbook:
The current one that's for sale on Apple.com has a :
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switching
All help well be greatly aprecateted. By the way this thing is just amazing and I'm coming from a 2010 early model 13" Macbook Pro. WOW!!!

Go to SYSTEM PROFILER>HARDWARE>HARDWARE OVERVIEW>MODEL IDENTIFIER
    Ciao.
    I would guess  you have a 10.1

  • How can I know which model of K9A2VM I have?

I have a K9A2VM motherboard with an Athlon 64 x2 3600+ AM2 CPU. I would now like to upgrade to an AM3 Phenom II CPU with lots and lots of cores.
However, I have a problem. I don't know if I have K9A2VM-FD or K9A2VM-FIH and I don't know how to find out. I've opened my box and looked at the card, but it only says K9A2VM. By reading the specs and looking at pictures, I know it has to be one of them, or at least that it is not K9A2VM-F V2 since it only has two RAM slots and I have four of them installed. There are other obvious differences too, which I can easily spot by looking at the picture.
Now, looking at the CPU support page for -FD and -FIH, they seem to have differences in what CPUs they support:
-FD at least supports an X6: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K9A2VM-FD.html#/?div=CPUSupport
    Phenom II X6    Thuban    HDT90ZFBK6DGR    1090T    200    3.20    3M    6M    E0    125    7501v1B.zip
But the -FIH CPU support page is different: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K9A2VM-FIH.html#/?div=CPUSupport
If I can use that processor, I'm really happy. But -FIH doesn't seem to support Phenom II at all. So provided that the information in the CPU support page is correct, it's fairly important to me to know which model I have. But in case nobody knows how I can distinguish between them; if I buy a Phenom II X6 CPU and it turns out that my motherboard doesn't support it; what is the worst thing that can happen? Will I break the CPU or motherboard, or will it simply not work, but the hardware will still be fine?
    Thanks.

So this is a MS-7501 Version 1.0 card, in addition to being a K9A2VM. The entire web refers to it as "K9A2VM-FD / FHI". One will work, and the other will go up in smoke. And there is no easy way to know which is which. So how can I know? The reason I bought this card was so I could upgrade the CPU at a later time. Now it seems that's not possible, because the available information is so very poor. I've never had to gamble when purchasing hardware from other vendors. Is this common for MSI?

  • How Do I determine which model ipad I need?

I initially thought buying a baic 16GB Ipad with the 9.7" screen would be simple and inexpensive. But, the more I have looked, the more confused I am. I am so technically challenged that I do not understand the "specs", let alone how to use them. I have a basic nebook that I only use for emails, chatting, shopping and research. And that is because I do not know how to use all the features available. And I love my Kindle 3G Wi-Fi e-reader but it is not color and has the external  typing key pad, which has been ideal for me .  I do not even know how to text on my cellphone so I had the service removed since I did not use it. And I only use the Kindle for reading but was glad got the 3G Model but their is no additional monthly usage fee.
But, now that I have been looking at the Apple ipads, I do not know if their  3/4G capabiliy service is worth the extra cost, as well as the high monthly serive fees? I am hoping someone can better explain why it cost so much more and just what the benefits will mean to me? Also, there any many benefits and added features but I do not believe I will ever learn t use many of them. And could someone please explain the advantage of "Bluetooth" and just what it means? And what other items or features will cost extra per month to use? Also, are none of the printer compatable? Is there no accessory to allow you to use a wireless printers? This was one of the most disappointing thing I have learned about the tablets. Aso, how is the quality of sound system?  Mine on the netbook is very poor and even with the volume on high, it is difficult to get good clear speach. So, I never watch moveis on my computer. And I am afraid it may be the same problem with the iPads? But, maybe with an external speaker or earbuds, it could enhance the sound? If so, at least I could listen to music.
In the beginning I was not concenred which model but now after reading more about the latest Apple, I feel the new easy to read screen is something I need. So, I hope someone can help me select the right model without my buying much more than I will ever need or use. I look foward any assistance you great tech savvy users can provide. I believe it always helps to be an informed buyer. So, trying to do my homework to prevent buyers remorse.
If it is permissable, you may email me with your information and suggestions on just what features I need to look for.

    Varjak paw:
I don't think you can purchase the 3/4+ wireless service unless you pay the extra for one that has the capabilities. So, if we are not certain we will need it, it is a tough decision. It it has the capablities, you are not required to purchase a monthly contract. You can just use as needed.
I do not know why this has become such a major decision for me but the more I hear, the more confused I am. The problem is it would be nice to have the special wireles service available if needed but I think it may be more beneficial to me to pay the extra 100.00 and get the 32 GB instead of the 16? But, my granddaughter says I will not need that much.
My initial plan was simply to purchse the 16GB wif-fi and keep it simple. But, after learning the advantages of the Newst model and the improved screen, I thought I should get it since I have vision problems. Another problem is these things are outdated before we can decide which one to get. And some have suggested it will be more diffucult to get parts and have them repaired with an older model. Howeverm from what I have seen with these new electronic items, they are dispoable. Usually, if something does go wrong, it cost more to repair than to replace them.
I am just experienceing this with my Kindle 3G/Wi-Fi. It is only a couple of months out of warranty but it is now freezing up. Also, it is loosing my place, and skipping pages and even paragraphs. It was working perfectly until about a week ago and of course, no one can help. You have to return it for them to check it and let you know what the problem could be and If it can be repaired. This is very disapointing to me since I was just planning to buy the Ipad. And now, I may have to replace the Kindle, which I wanted to keep for just reading. I have so many books on it and they are all in order and organized. So, this has put damper on what to do about the Ipad. If I were sure I would like to read on it as well as I do the Kindle, I would just the the Ipad and not get another Kindle. But, I will need to see what the problem is first. I really enjoy the Kindle and wanted to keep it just for my books. It is so fast and convenient to use. At least for me since I like the typing pad on the outside rather then the touch pad. But, I suppose I will learn how to use the new one? I am just so illierate when it comes to using any electronics. I cannot use a remote control,.:) I only use my computer for email, chatting and surfing since I do not know how to use many of the functions and applications that are available on it. I do not even have text on my cell phone. I have kept my electronic to a minumim. But, I thought I might enjoy the Appple Ipad and could learn to use it online so I would not have to have the computer on all the time?  But, I cannot beleive how expensive it is compared to a netbook or laptop when they will do much more than the Tablet. I suppose the Ipad is a luxury for those who can afford all the lasted new technical items available.
I did try a Pandigital Tablet before I bought the Kindle and did not like it at all. So, I returned it and got the Kindle and was so pleased that I could use it so easily. And I did not need the color screen, I just hope the Apple Tablet will be easier to use than the Pandigital or I am afraid, I will be to hard for me to learn to use it and be able to  take full advantage of of getting around on the internet, I had a problem with the ohter touch screen scrolling back up before I had finished typing in all the information I needed. And I had to download from Barnes and Nobels and there selection was not nearly as good as the Kindle and they were much higher.
So if anyone is patent enough to read all this and can understand what I need and could provide your  expert advice, suggestion and opinions, I would love to hear from you and any or all the issue in which I need help.
    Thanks - Sunny in SC

I am considering getting an iphone... I do not care about getting the "latest gadget", but have all apple products and would love the convenience of the calendar, music, camera, etc... on my phone. Which model is the best for me to get?
Is it really worth it for the newest (and most expensive) model, or is the 3G sufficient for regular use? or is the 4 now the most basic model I should invest in? or do I really have to get the 4S?

  • Unable to detect NFC tag (ISO15693) in Lumia 830 on windows Phone 8.1

Microsoft in Windows phone 8.1 has added new Nfc related features including low level access(Non NDEF). I have Nokia Lumia 830 (PN547 NFC chipset is present in this device).Im not able to detect Nfc tag (ANT-7M24LR-A ,ISO15693) through Lumia 830, which
im able to read/write using Nfc-V(ISO15693) in Android. I also have a Lumia 720 (old NFC hardware) but atleast it is able to detect the tag. Has anyone encountered this ? Whats the workaround ?

    Hi Franklin,
Thank you for the quick reply.
Current OS version on the Lumia 830  is : Windows Phone 8.1 Update (8.10.14157.200)
I have taken reference of  the NFC Smart Card Reader project(nfcsmartcardreader codeplex) to read/ write to the tag. We are trying to read/write to the tag (ISO 15693) using the low level APIs (Non NDEF format).
But my problem is that even before we can send/receive the data from the tag, the phone is not detecting the tag itself. If i try to debug the card added event doesnot fire in any case for (ANT-7 M24-LR-A) tag.
I also have a Lumia 720 (old NFC hardware) but it is atleast able to detect the above mentioned tag.
Lumia 830 is able to detect other tags like a generic NFC sticker (Mifare Ultralight) .
    Hi theDarkPriest,
    >>I have taken reference of the NFC Smart Card Reader project(nfcsmartcardreader codeplex) to read/ write to the tag
Well, have you tied to read NFC Tag using Proximity API? If not, please refer to this article:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/windowsappdev/archive/2013/04/18/develop-a-cutting-edge-app-with-nfc.aspx
If the Proximity API can detect NFC Tag correctly,  I think this issue should caused by this third-party library, you need to ask for help in its official site:

OTA updates usually become available earlier than the SW appears to Recovery Tool, so this not an uncommon situation.
If you want a clean install immediately, the result would be more or less the same if you first reset the phone to 02040.00005.14372.54001/8.10.14157.200 via Recovery tool and then download the latest SW version 02040.00021.15063.02002/8.10.14234.375 via OTA.
Unless you have a problem with the phone or trouble with downloading the OTA update, "clean install" via Recovery Tool should not be needed though.

  • Which model do I have?

I hear about the Pismo, Lombard, Wallstreet models of the Powerbook G3. Now all I need to know is which model mine is...
    Here are the specs.
    Powerbook G3 firewire
    400 MHZ 1 MB Cache 10 G hd CD/DVD
192 MB Memory - yes it was upgraded
    Airport
I want to upgrade the HD to at least 40 G preferably 60G and add memory to make it 512 MB
Any suggestions on which Hd to get.
I know it runs OS 10.3 because I have loaded that on it.. but it is just a little slow.
Various MACS, G3 through iMac G59 (and some 5500's)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Also systems 9.1, 9.2 and 10.2 Learning windows...

    Welcome!
    You have a great machine!
Pismos are wonderful pieces of hardware.
(Pismos are the only G3 powerbooks with firewire; last, and best, of the G3 powerbooks; also known as 2000 Powerbooks, for the year they were created in)
I would recommend an IBM/Hitachi Travelstar HD.
I am using a 7200 RPM 60GB, purchased from ZIpZoomFly for about $150 several months ago. Works great. Upgrading the HD made a huge difference in performance (already had 1 GB RAM).
Your 192 RAM is very minimal. You should buy a single 512MB module and replace the smaller of your two existing modules (you've probably got a 64 and 128, so you would end up with 640MB which should be plenty).

My backlight of the navigation bar of the Nokia Lumia 830 are not working properly. They were on in the beginning, but after a while they turned off. If I disable the option ''battery saver (brightness)'' in the settings of ''screen'', the lights turn on!! Strange.
The problem is.. I haven't enabled battery saver and my battery is fully charged. Still, the lights won't go on when I have enabled the option ''battery saver (brightness)''.Thereby, on my glance screen the battery saver icon is activated. Agian, battery saver is not activated.
Looks like a software problem. Is this a known problem and is there a solution?
I hope to here from you.
    Kind Regards,
    Jesse

    Hello,
I first wanted to say thank you for your response!
Yes, I'm still experiencing it, but I've found a workaround. Let me first answer your questions and then I will tell you about my workaround.
It doesn't happen randomly. It started after a charge overnight. I inplugged my device and this battery shield was on my glance screen, even though battery saver was not activated. On my start screen this shield wasn't visible on the battery icon. After that, my navigation keys won't light up anymore. I've tried soft resets and all options in the battery saver settings, but that didn't help. I would have contacted my point of purchase if it was a hardware defect, but..
I've found out that it isn't. It is a software bug. In settings there is also a setting for ''screen''. If I go there, there is an option called ''battery saver (brightness)''. It is enabled by default, which is good so my screen will be dimmed when battery saver is active. But.. although battery saver is NOT active, this option does effect my brightness (so it will dim when battery saver is not active)! Thereby, when I disable this option, my keys will light up!!
It seems some sort of software bug related to the battery saver. It is not enabled on my device and my phone is fully charged, but there is a battery shield on my glance screen and the option under screen does have effect on my brightness. I've checked it with a Lumia 930. The option under screen (battery saver (brightness)) has no effect on the brightness of the screen when battery saver is not active. After activating, the lights of the keys will also still light up. So, no trouble with the Lumia 930.
I hope I explained it clear. If not, feel free to ask.
btw, is there somewhere I can report this bug? Or if I report it her, will it be in the right place?

  • Lumia 830 moment capture

    Hi,
I just have received my new Lumia 830 phone, and i'm really happy with it. One thing however i have noticed that it does miss the moment capture feature which i'm really excited about. On the nokia website http://conversations.nokia.com/2014/09/04/lumia-denim-update/ it is said that Lumia 830 phones ship with the denim update, and this contains this feature. I have also read that i should use the Lumia camera app however the only one i was able to find in the store was the Nokia camera app.
What am I missing? Is this feature should be available?
    Thanks.

hi mate, in error the updated Lumia Camera and features were not included on the Lumia 830 at launch but are said to be coming in the next month or so. please sit tight as it shouldn't be too long now mate.

  • Which models of Mac will I need?

I normally run chrome with 10 or more tabs + iTunes in the background playing music(just ALAC from the library not streaming) + photoshop in the background idling(just open and put it there) while sometimes edit image (minor edit like resize the image and canvas size). I will also stop the music in iTunes then open a movie/video that's 1920x1080 Hi10p/HEVC BD FLAC.
PS: I am not much of a gamer. While I may bootcamp just to play a few Japanese Visual Novel games that's available only in PC. Other than that, I seldom/almost no play games.
So which models of Macs do you guys think will suit my usage? Or are there any PCs out there that suit my needs too?

Appears the site Hosts have moved your thread into the iMac (Intel) discussions area
so as to keep it in-line with a more recent hardware and software technology. Another
option, sort of hinted at by where this discussion is now located, is the iMac series...
All of these (as new recent models) will run the most current OS X system, 10.10.
If you were interested in one kind of model build version over another, then there
are a few other choices. Some like the portability of the MacBook Pro or Air models.
Others may like the idea you could use most displays, keyboard & mouse, etc when
considering the Mac Mini, as it ships with none. An iMac ships with the built-in display,
a keyboard, and mouse. When ordering online from the Apple Store, you could choose
to also include a different mouse model, keyboard version, or touchpad; in addition to
the choice of processor and other factors, across two iMac 21.5 + 27-inch models...
(Then, there's the top-end model that would certainly not be within my budget: iMac 5K.)
There occasionally are recent models that are slightly discounted, fully guaranteed as
new, and qualify for the optional AppleCare extended plan, in Apple's refurbished site.
You have no options in the build, each one that may be listed is just that. Some have
more or less RAM, a variety of other specification, and may or may not ship with the
same software of the specific build-run they had when each was available in retail...
•Apple Store (US) online refurbished & clearance site:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals
So it may be possible to get a last-years model that could have Mavericks 10.9 in it.
That model would be able to get Yosemite from the Mac App Store online, an upgrade.
It is possible to have an older system (in a partition or external separate drive) and a
newer one, and run the computer alternately from one or the other. Or revert to older.
A fair plan would be to budget for an externally enclosed hard disk drive with faster
7200-RPM drive inside, and USB3.0 porting; this could be used to backup and also
be able to support a bootable copy or clone of your system. This would be in addition
to an external drive or device that would be used with Time Machine for backups...
These should be self-powered so they do not rely on the computer port for power,
and be of suitable size capacity for some serious storage; or be good for partitions
so more than one duty can be served by the device. A 2 or 3 TB may be OK.
The site macsales.com (aka: OWC) has some good examples of this kind of gear.
For wireless and wired backups one could opt for an Apple Time Capsule, that is an
AirPort Extreme base station with internal storage; this works well for Time Machine.
The other backup drive device is an externally enclosed hard disk drive with fast HDD.
This is what can be used if set up, to truly have a copy of your computer via clone or
bootable clone. It could run the computer should the main internal drive fail, too.
Since OS X likes plenty of resources made available for its use, to make an affordable
investment in the device at a level you can justify and plan on using for a few years, is
about the best one can do. A top-end machine, not within most student budgets, is a
nice idea but not necessarily the affordable device to begin with. However to a good
extent, to get a reasonably good configuration of fast hard drive (spin rate, if not SSD)
and memory RAM, and processor with good spec graphics, can look more costly than
a generic PC that was not designed for use with OS X.
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/mac-mini?product=MGEN2LL/A&step=config
The mid-level Mini has a few options. More RAM is only available as CTO or custom
order, or may be found in a retail Apple Store if they chose to stock them. 16GB is
quite a bit. An option for a 7200-RPM HDD is not listed in the online config page in
the Store, but that would be a fair one. The Fusion drive is some kind of hybrid that
would be fairly quick, though it uses a partial SSD and HDD together. A 1-TB hybrid
may be more like a 750GB HDD with a 250GB SSD working together, and seen in
the system as one unit. Some user errors or processes in utility can change this so
these Fusion units may appear broken or as two parts. It is one unit. Some of these
Mini models could use more than one HDD or one SSD and one HDD.
They had a server model which shipped with two 1-TB HDD (5400-RPM) and initially
only 4GB RAM, user upgradable to 16GB. Some users found these were slower than
expected and the Late 2012 Mini quad-core server cost nearly $1,000. Upgrades to
such a unit (no longer sold regularly at Apple) invite the faster spin rate HDDs, and
the RAM upgrade. A company in NY by name of B&H photovideo shows one of these
in their computer sales page, for about $849. and the inventory is new, not refurb.
However the graphics shares standard system RAM, and is slower than IRIS graphics
(which also appears to share standard system RAM with graphics.)
I have not looked closely at the newest Mini in the $699 price-point, but the Iris Graphics
may be a good move, if the computer also has at least 8GB RAM, and a 7200-RPM HDD.
OR an SSD. The solid-state product is rather costly, & third-party versions are not going
to be covered by the AppleCare and unless an Apple authorized service provider does an
upgrade and does not void the warranty, that is a loss of value to upgrade that way. You
could pay plenty extra for a small capacity SSD, to get some speed, but they fill quickly.
An external that could run at 7200-RPM via USB3.0 or Thunderbolt, could support an OS X
system running from that external location. That is an option, so the original HDD need not
be replaced straight-away. The stock 500GB HDD is usually a 5400-RPM model and that
would be the bottleneck or choke-point of the hardware. Even with a fair amount of RAM.
So the specifications on these have to be seriously considered and more information obtained.
Another source of comparison specifications, is a download database from http://mactracker.ca
in addition to the extensive site from http://everymac.com. If you were to consider older hardware
to have a lower cost option, the only advantage would be the cost and loss factor. Not as much
out there, and less loss if it turned up missing or damaged by accident. Oh if you have renter
or household insurance, see about accidental and water damage insurance as part of general
policy. This in addition to theft and personal articles coverage, that includes theft. These items
are not part of the AppleCare extended protection. All the numbers & specs change when one
considers a comparison between a portable and a desktop computer.
Sorry for all this writing, I had a few other web pages open and did some reading, but did not
see as that helps; you'd have to be looking ahead and hope for the best. Also plan otherwise.
To have a good backup method and a a duplicate method, so your works-in-progress aren't
lost if or when something should happen, is worth the cost for reputable quality & fair price.
Hopefully someone can give you better advice in the questions concerning configuration of product
and the kinds of options you may need to plan for at some point. If I were going to return to school
and wanted to keep a low budget while still using a Mac, I'd consider some pre-owned models at
low enough price (with viable known-good source) for something I could replace the HDD or add
RAM, and know it is essentially a disposable item. If you are taking science, math or design courses
the kind of computer would vary. Same thing if you were to expect image or video graphic editing &
building layers of changes that eat up resources. And I'd want to have a spare computer. If portable
I'd try & take the ugly used one out and let it be seen while any nice costly one would be in hiding.
Hopefully you can check into the options, and not just with a retail Apple Store. If available, ask
some of the same questions and compare answers from independent authorized Apple retail
shops whose business is also repair & service. Some of the older personnel have experience of
a level not found in the regular Apple Store, if they are real Apple Specialists.
Sorry for the long post, and I can't say this answers all that much!
