Lumia 920 overheating/battery life

I sent my phone in for repair a week ago because of a loose battery and have since got the phone back and it is all fine and it doesn't clunk around now, however I noticed on my commute to work this morning and on my way home that when I was playing games on the device (temple run, asphalt 7 and VBA8), it would cause the phone to run really hot as If I was touching a radiator. Battery life also dipped from 99% to 13% within roughly and hour and a half of use, so I have attached a screenshot of the battery level app to display this. Is this a known issue or another repair job?

Same problem here. I got a new black lumia 920, 2 weeks ago at SLot limited, Ikeja. and it heats up ,
1. whenever I browse on 3G, (FB, twitter or skype)
2.when I take some pictures (like 7 at a go)...forget games, I won't even go there
I've turned most of the perks (NFC, location et al off)... I thought this was a smartphone, why do we have to make it a 3310 for it to work...I also saw the video,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gU6soZi61GQ,  If the problem is the procesor, why doesnt Nokia do the dignified thing and call back the faulty phones or equip the care centres with the technical know-how to insulate these phones. especially for their flagship phone... This is absolutely sad.
I was actually thinking of going to the care centre before but from the reviews above, It just a waste of time. We should all have been advised at the point of purchase that we were buying a radiator....hiss

  • Nokia Lumia 920 potential battery drain issue?

Can you Nokia confirm this? http://reach.jdbpocketware.com/topic/128305-to-nokia-ref-lumia-920/
    The issue illustrated in detail:
    Nature of Windows Phone buttons
Pressing either the power button or the camera button will cause the device screen to turn on, even when the proximity sensor detects proximity.
    The lockscreen behavior
Upon power on, screen lights up and shows the lockscreen (or camera), which runs a timeout to auto power off the device if screen is not touched in X seconds.
But if screen is touched, the timeout counter is restarted, so continuous touching could lead into a loop, the "death loop" which won't let the device to power off (standby) and will consume battery life.
    New touchscreen technology
The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a touchscreen that reacts to touch from pretty much any material such as metal or clothes. This can be dangerous.
    So here is a theory
When the phone is inside a pocket or bag it can be touched by other objects. These objects can press buttons and can touch/rub the screen. This will initiate the "death loop" for who knows how much time, could be minutes or hours, depends on how active the user is since body movement will produce friction between objects/clothes and touchscreen:
The "death loop" will drain battery and battery is precious.
    Solution?
Should be simple: screen must not power on if the proximity sensor detects proximity. Current version of Windows Phone does not take care of this. The big question is: will Windows Phone 8 take care of this? Is the Lumia 920 a potential battery drainer?

I don't understand why we have to spend our valuable time in the forums for days and nights to FIND HOW TO FIX THAT CRAB!! NOKIA company did not handout these devices FOR CHARITY.All of us had paid around a thousand dollars to buy this Phone. They have got to work overtime to fix it and publish a solution otherwise recall the devices back.

  • Lumia 920 Overheating!

Hi.I was an HTC 8X owner and it was overheating like crazy.I thought the device had a problem and so until the retail is going to give me a new one i bought the Lumia 920.
The phone and it's specs are simply awsome with an amazing OS that has a huge potential.
Problem is that from the firt second i switched on the phone it begun overheating, especialy when i go to play games or take photos. What can i do?I don't think it's a device problem because the same thing was happening with my HTC.
I dont think a brand new NOKIA can be so faulty. Is there coming any update/fix OS or firmware?

Is it possible you just expect your phone to stay cooler than it does?  (I only ask because you have experienced "overheating" with two different phones from two different makers.)
Is it possible the ambient temperature where you use or store the device is quite high?
Nokia states that with the 920 "Always keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F) for optimal performance. Extreme temperatures reduce the capacity and lifetime of the battery."
As many have pointed out before me, you can expect any smart phone to get warmer with use. (Unless I experienced some kind of malfunction that occured at a specific temperature, I couldn't even begin to guess what the "normal" operating temperature of my phone would be.)
Best Wishes from one Happy Nokia User to another. :^)

  • Lumia 920 overheating when running Here Drive+

Any suggestions as to why my Lumia 920 overheats to the point of shutting down when trying to navigate with Here Drive+
Doesn't matter if I have it running on battery power or via a Nokia DC car charger, same effect, it gets hot and then shuts down

Similar issue with Lumia 920 (WP8) heating up when using Here Drive.  I've resorted to using it only for short amounts of time to avoid excessive heat buildup.  When I use Here Drive, battery life is significantly shortened also which is another reason why I don't leave it running during long drives.  If the phone does overheat, it tends to exit out of the Drive app and I sometimes I don't realize that Navigation has stopped working until I look at the phone!
And no, I do not use live traffic data as I do not have a data plan on my phone.

  • Lumia 710 Remaining Battery Life % Not Correct

I've had my Lumia 710 for a few months now and over the past week the remaining battery life percentage is way wrong.  For instance, one day I noticed my battery icon was really low so I went to check the % and it said it was -4%.  I was even able to make a 10 minute call and it never died on me.  A few days ago I had about 70% but when I checked the phone a few minutes later it was around 10%.  A few times I've even had it die on me and it never gives me the critical battery warning.
This morning it was dead when I woke up so I brought my charger to work.  After charging only 30 minutes it said I had 57% battery.  But now 4 hours later I'm sitting at 98% and it looks like it won't go past that.  Is something wrong with my battery or could the battery life indicator just be way off?  It was accurate the first few months after I got the phone so I don't know what is going on.

    Hi stephwin,
    Welcome to Nokia Support Discussions!
Sounds like they may be something wrong with the battery, especially the sudden battery "deaths" without any prior warning indicate that. We would advise you to visit your local Nokia Care point and let them have a look. Nokia Lumia 710 has a removable battery, so changing it should not be too much of a hassle if it comes to that.
Let us know how you get on,

  • Lumia Icon: Differing Battery Life

Owners of white Lumia Icons, including myself, have noticed disappointing battery life, while owners of Black Icons have stellar battery life, lasting up to 24 hours. I'd usually pin this on differing styles of use, but the problem is widespread enough that it deserves an investigation by support. Perhaps it's due to Nokia using differing firmware depending on the color of the phone?
And yes, I have tried the usual battery saving tactics.

To say there is two different hardwears in a different coloured device is bonkers, imo, mainly this is all in the head as tow saying the black one is different than the white one,if your device is not up to par and you feel there is an issue return it to point of puchase or a nokia care point..

  • Lumia 620 - poor battery life

Lasting less than 6hrs, on continuous usage with whatsapp, email and games.
If battery saver is ON, there is a small increase in battery life.
Is nokia making any solutions for this, such as a bigger battery or lower screen brightness?

    ken1ceo wrote:
I have the same issue. However, this is what I've learned. When I ignore the critical battery warning and just keep using the phone I find that it will last an entire day. It's like the software running the battery life remaining service is not configured properly. When I go into Options, Battery Saver it says the battery life is 0, but will continue to run another 8 hours! Here's hoping it's just a software glitch and an update will come out soon.
I can confirm this. My mother was explaining that her phone was saying that her battery was critically low after a few hours of of being unplugged from the charger and saying a 100% charge. I told her something must be off with a battery memory or something (which is weird because I know these batteries aren't supposed to have memories) and to just keep using the phone until the phone fully died. I had her go into the battery saver and turn it off. Funny thing is it wouldn't die. She used it all day and it was fine. Her phone does this to her every day now. Sometimes after saying the battery it critically low for hours it will switch back and show it has 50-75% of the battery left.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 Overheating & Battery Drain after...

    Hello,
I've been experiencing an intermintent problem with my Nokia Lumia 1520 (AT&T, 16GB model) where my phone overheats and the battery drains. The problem started after I upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan. As of now I haven't figured out a good step by step method to reproduce the problem on demand however I have noted that when this problem occurs and I wake the phone and unlock it the Start screen shows a never ending or unusually long "Loading" message and my phone will overheat and drain the battery. So far the only way to mitigate the problem is by shutting it down manually or performing a "soft" reboot of the phone. Afterwards the problem gets resolved and the phone resumes normal operations after rebooting with the phone returning to a normal temperature and battery drain rate that is consistent with the use it is being given.
Given that I don't know anyone else carrying a Lumia 1520 has anyone seen something similar to the problem I am describing on this post with their Lumia 1520 unit after updating to Windows Phone 8.1?
So far the only big resolution step I've taken is to perform a complete phone reset and not recovering the phone from my back ups, effectively making it a "new" phone in terms of settings and software conditions.
My theory for this problem is that it is software driven as an overheated phone and a stuck "Loading" message instead of the Start screen after unlocking the phone indicates that a software process (either OS or separate Application) may be behind the issue.
Thanks for any assistance on this matter!

Did not work unfortunately... But I have resolved my overheating and battery drain issue...
CORTANA is the culprit and needs to be unpinned from the start screen.
Here is the process if CORTANA is piined already..
    1) Unpin CORTANA
    2) Go to "Settings.. Applications and open Cortana
    3) Turn off Cortana
    4) Phone will RESET
    5) Go to "Settings.. Applications and open Cortana
    6) Turn on CORTANA
DO NOT PIN TO START SCREEN
    7) Swipe your start screen over to your applications
    8) select CORTANA and allow it to set it self up again.
Now CORTANA is still accessible by the Search icon or from your application menu.
Now your battery.. Before the update my battery was reading "1 day, 14+ hours"
After update After recharge I was getting 14 hours then it would start draining.
After taking CORTANA off the start screen my phone stop getting hot near the camera (Upper left) and after 2 days (Battery cycling) my battery has returned back to reading "1 day, 14+ hours"
My assumption - The matter will be resolved with the Lumia Denim update coming later this qtr.
When that arrives my understanding is CORTANA is off BETA in US. Some additional Firmware tweaking, along with the camera updates and more.. Which "SHOULD" resolve this battery drain & over heating with CORTANA
Per my experience, I believe you're right that Cortana is the culprit for the problem described by the original poster. I unpinned Cortana from my start screen 6 days ago, and so far so good. I have not had a recurrence of that problem. I did not turn Cortana off and then back on again though. I just unpinned it, and that seems to have done the trick.
I'm also hopeful the Windows Phone 8.1.1 and Lumia Denim update will fix this since Cortana will be off Beta in the U.S.

  • Lumia 800 Short Battery Life

    Hello,
I bought my Lumia 800 2 months ago and I've been a happy user until recently. In the past, it could remain in standby mode up to 5 days after a full charge (with WiFi on, no 3G). However, in the past few days, it couldn't even last over a night after a full charge. Within 24 hours, the battery would be drained completely and it would auto shut-down.
I haven't installed any new apps or changed my connection settings, and I think the only change I've done is to update WhatsApp to v2.8.
So, is there a problem with my phone which needs to be repaired? I have always been using the lowest brightness level and I'm a very light user (almost never use it), so it seems abnormal that such a new phone can't even be switched on overnight.
    Thanks

    Hi Billyfoo
Thank you for your post and welcome to the forums.
Have you tried doing a soft reset on the device? By holding down the volume down key and the power button at the same time this will do a reset on your device but will not erase any data. Also do you have any background applications running? You can check this by going into settings and scrolling across to applications and then background tasks.
Also have you checked your Zune application for any updates? Make sure you have the latest firmware.
Furthermore you can also check the below link for a few battery tips:

  • Lumia 800 poor battery life

Anyone here's battery run out very quickly. I had it charged last night and when I got up in the morning it was down to 35% from just sitting there.
It might have been updating email but that shouldn't kill the battery like that.
I don't use it that much during the day but it seems to go down really fast. I'm currently at 47% and it estimates 1 hour left....

I actually charged it fully again. There were no apps running and WiFi as well as 3G were deactivated.
I took 2 pictures of it, one with Battery Saver ON and the other with it OFF. Without Battery Saver it shows 15h and with Battery Saver it shows 17h. There is clearly something very wrong here...

  • Nokia Lumia 920 overheating frozen

Have tried soft reset but this is not working. My phone has been overheating and freezing for ages,  very frustrating as i dont do anything very much on it. The odd game - talking tom or facebook is about it. Have tried doing soft resets each time and has worked up to now. Have also uninstalled whatsapp as people have said that might be an issue. Have uninstalled fb app and only access it online. Seriously dont do anything else on my phone. If I do hard reset how can i back my stuff up beforehand if i cant even use the phone!!!!

    Hi Mebin,
    Welcome to the forum!
It is normal for the phone to get warm when in intensive use. However, if you think that it's already too hot, you'll need to check it with the Nokia Repair Facility for further tests.
With regard to the 4G concern, Is your phone unlocked or unbranded? 4G will be supported if the operator or SIM that you are using supports 4G connection as well. It is best to contact your operator for more information about their network coverage.

  • Nokia Lumia 920 issues... that nokia CANNOT fix

I have got quite a few issues with this useless phone:
MMS messages: i cannot recieve them. i can with my iphone, its a nokia issue, they are unable to let me know what is wrong.
random rebooting: this shoudnt happen but it does, very annoying.
unable to connect to WPA2 Enterprise networks :a biggie for me, will install a certificate, but cannot use it, nokia CANNOT fix this issue
battery life is nothing like advertised, i was advised by nokia to disable data, disable wifi, disable EVERYTHING turning my premium phone into a dumbphone
the phone creaks, you can hear it on calls and video's captured
Nokia support is useless, they tell me they will call me back, but never do.
the camera is useless in normal light conditions heaps of overexpsed area's
anyone have any fixes for these issues?

As has been reported by many people here as a result of an equal amount of people bringing it up Battery life on the Lumia 920 will require a number of charging cycles to optimize, This has nothing to do with the phone but is inherent of the type of batteries used in modern day phones and not specific to Lumia 920.
Battery use may vary depending on a number of issues. If you are seeing mailsync, sending and/or receiving SMS and others be troublesome and require many retries it could be you are in a region where the signal is not very good. I am _not_ saying it's not the phone, just that it does not have to be, and frankly often isn't.
Nokia Drive+ is not available as a beta for nothing. If you can't deal with or won't be willing with using beta software then don't. The latest update has reportedly improved performance significantly.
How does MMS not working have anything to do with Battery, get the correct settings from your carrier. There's plenty of information available here on how to get this sorted.
What are your expectations of battery life? In general I would say for a phone like the Lumia 920 a normal working day should be quite acceptable and many users initially reporting shorter life have cone back in confirming that battery life has seriously improved over the initial few days/weeks of use.
And in conclusion, if you feel your device is faulty talk to Nokia using the contact details here. In such a case there is nothing anyone here can say or do to help you really.

  • Lumia 920 Encryption

    Hi,
I've recently got a Lumia 920 and one of the big feature for me was the data encryption. It's listed on the specs on Nokia's website:
    http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia920/specifications/
    Security
    Data encryption
    User data encryption for device
But I can't for the life of me find where I can set it up. I really wanna get it working as I want to start integrating into Office 365 as well.
Has anybody managed to get it working, or could someone please point me in the right direction?
    Thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I know with WP8, encryption is pretty much built throughout the device from secure boot, sandboxed encrypted apps and data encryption is supported, but, enabled by EAS or via a MDM policy.. Not sure if there is a way the user can toggle this feature or not.
This is from the Windows Phone 8 Security Whitepaper:
    Device encryption
To help keep everything from documents to passwords safe, Windows Phone 8 6 encrypts the internal storage of the device, including the operating system and
data partitions. Device encryption is enabled by EAS or device management policy.
Device encryption in Windows Phone 8 uses BitLocker technology to encrypt all internal data storage on the phone. Once enabled, BitLocker conversion automatically starts encrypting the internal storage. With both PIN-lock and BitLocker enabled, the combination of data encryption and device lock would make it extremely difficult for an attacker to recover sensitive information from a device.

  • Lumia 920 battery life suddenly changed

Hi, everyone. I am a newbie here. I had my red 920 since 11/9 and it has been great until this Tuesday. Previously the battery was great and after full charge it usually showed battery life 1day or even longer. This Tuesday I used camera a lot. The handset did get warmer because of flash and focus assist lamp. After that night the battery darin rate became really fast. After one overnight charge 100% battery only shows 9hours and drain rate was like 10% per hour. Any one has suggestions why this occured suddently? Do I need to reset the phone to factory?
    Thanks a lot

    Hi
I had similar issue I went to Microsoft store, they didn't understand the problem.
they said background tasks, WiFi,location service etc. Everything was offline.
The issue started after December patch update.
The system keeps dropping signal very often and it tries to reconnect to 4G and LTE making battery drain, This is as per the Tech at Microsoft store...
Use wall charger for 3-4 hours. That helps. Also let the battery drain to less than 10% and charge , Turn of all your background tasks that helps...
No word from Nokia yet., Wireless charger doesn't work well.
Also when i tried logging in from Lumia 920 to post this message, the popup login on the sign in doesnt work. Also when you post the scrolling doesnt work really well like on the desktop. Not sure if its the site issue or IE10 issue
The Spell check for Lumia is still not fixed. it suggested Aluminia... can some mod from Nokia put in a request to fix this ?

  • Lumia 920 battery life issue

I have a small battery queries on my phone, Lumia 920. The phone is new, I am approx. 1 month of goes perfectly, only last night I noticed a strange thing, I say. I had to hang up (shutdown) because I was in a medical practice with 12% battery status. After about 2 hours we reopened (power on) and found that my battery status shows 74%. And went so until the next recharge, about 36 hours. It is normal to happen? Thanks in advance.

It is not normal but it can happen. Battery meters are very approximate and readings are based on output voltage which can sometimes temporarily dip or rise due to use.
You can minise the discrepancy by calibrating the meter. This is done by running the battery down and then charging till full without interruptions.
