Lumia 920 - Proximity Sensor

I have a Nokia Lumia 920 in black from Everything Everywhere (Which I have paid to have an unlock code and use on o2 UK) for the last week or so it appears the proximity sensor has been playing up. As soon as I make a call, answer a call or use Skype the screen turns off and I can only end the call by promptly pressing the power button and then quickly hitting the end call button before the screen turns off again.
It appears to me that the proximity sensor is detecting that the phone is still by my face even when I hold it away.
Is there a way I can diagnose this or will I have to send it in for repair?
If it goes in for repair, will it remain carrier unlocked as I paid for this?
Thanks,
Jamie.

Hi - I had this problem with two, yes two successive 920 handsets.  Maby I was unlucky, but elsewhere online I can see that alot of customers have had this problem.  Amazingly, it does not seem to be a software problem, but a physial problem.  Dust gets actually under the glass.  You may be able to see it by the front facing lens.  The problem about ending calls happen becaue dust settles on he proximity sensor which is housed just above the N on the Nokia at the top right of the handset.  I know this sounds crazy for a top of the range smartphone, but it does seem to be the cause.  The shop I used allowed me to change to an HTC One without any quibbles. I was sad because I really lilked my 920s but not being able to finish a call is a showstopper.  I thought of persevering with blowing compressed air at the top of the handset, but eventually concluded that if the phone is that bad after three weeks then there is no way it will last the duration of a 24 month contract!

  • Lumia 920 proximity sensor not working

It's a 5 months old Lumia 920 and already the proximity sensor stopped working!!!
When i make a call or receive a call, when i place the phone beside my ear, or cover it with my hand just to check, nothing happens! The phone screen doesn't go black, it stays active for the entire time and the phone charge drains like crazy.
Guess it's a hardware failure. Still if anyone has any suggestions, i will appreciate much.
    Thanks in advance.
    BR,
    Saad

I've had the same problem. The screen won't blank during a call (like the proximity sensor isn't detecting my face/finger/hand). I keep hanging up on people with my ear. I've taken to locking my screen before putting it to my ear but anytime I get another call / text / voicemail / calendar notification / alarm while i'm on the phone (which happens a lot still) it lights the screen up again and makes it where i'm able to hang up with my ear.
I've factory reset, and had the phone replaced TWICE already. I'm on my 3rd Lumia 920 (and they all have the same issue!) This didn't happen until the most recent firmware update...so I think it was a problem created when they were trying to fix the other proximity sensor issue where the screen stayed on black all the time during a call.
Rebooting does fix the problem temporarily, but it always comes back. I'm tired of hanging up on people and hoping for a new model device from AT&T but they're giving me **bleep** at the moment.
TLDR: Factory reset, replacement devices don't fix the problem. It's a firmware bug. I'm on my 3rd 920 with the same issue. Extraordinarily frustrating.

  • Nokia Lumia 920 Proximity alledgely repaired quest...

Hi, everyone knows about the proximity fault on the lumias, I have just had mine so called repaired by Nokia and now a week later its gone again and is worse than ever, so it is going back to Nokia for repair again. Obvioulsy im not happy like a lot of people here. Has anyone else had there phone so called repaired then its gone again?, How many times have you had it repaired etc?,did you get a replacement handset?

As far as I'm aware the problem with the proximity sensor is usually caused by dust getting under the screen. So I would hazard a guess and say that the Nokia repair centre has merely cleared the dust away from the sensor. If the problem has returned then I'd imagine that more dust has found its way under your screen and is blocking the sensor again.

The proximity sensor has no user settings.

  • Lumia 1520 proximity sensor

After update to 1028.3562.1402.0001 last week, proximity sensor stoped working properly. It works OK right after I restart the phone, but sometimes after half an hour or sometimes after half a day it stops working - screen stays on during a call and glance peek doesn't work.
    Any suggestions??

@playfulangel14thanks for getting back.. I've got Glance background installed, following my first post and a reply from @musica it helped, but the problem restarted after a week or less..
I've checekd the phone for software updates and there isn't anything pending either in the setting/software update or regular app.. all are up to date to wahts availbe in my region. The only thing thats been slving my issue (temporarily) until it comes back again is the soft reset, and I've been doing it atleast once a day for the last month.. today, I'vealready done it twice and I jsut observered that the sensor again stopped working.
I've even tried to hard reset the phone to everything of its factory settings a couple of weeks or more ago, but that didn't help either.
    I'm clueless of its state...

  • Proximity sensor doesn't switch off - Lumia 920

Hi, I hope someone can help me here.  I've got a huge problem with my brand new Lumia 920.
When I make a phone call, or accept a phone call, it seems my phone locks the screen completely, as if I had it next to my ear (i.e. the proximity sensor), even when I don't have it anywhere near my head.
I cannot end a phone call, or switch to loudspeaker etc. - nothing.  It is highly annoying, and I have no idea how to fix it.
I have done a soft reset, but to no avail.
I had a bluetooth headset connected earlier in the day, and then disconnected it.  This phenomenon did not occur prior to using the bluetooth headset.  No idea if this can have anything to do with it, but it seems a strange coincidence.

I have exactly the same problem! I am kind of happy, I am not the only one with this problem!
First thing I did was factory resetting the phone. Of course this wasn't the issue.
Then I thought that my proximity sensor isn't working at all - but then I started testing it. I went into a room without a light and then went back to a room with a light and display automatically adjusted the brightness. So the sensor works.
Then I stared a phone call (screen become black) and then I put the phone just few centimeters from a light bulb and the display adjusted brightness and I could see all normally (like it should work if you don't put it near you head). Can you try this and tell me if you get same result?
I would conclude that sensor should be somehow trimmed, but I sure don't know how to do that.

  • Dust in proximity sensor!!! Lumia 920

Dust has seemed to work it's way under the top part of the screen and it is affecting the proximity sensor, when in a phone call. When I start a phone call the screen goes black instantly and the screen is then unusable until the other end hangs up. I know it's dust as I can see it under the front camera cover as well.
Is this something that Nokia can clean out? Or can I have a local repair store fix it without voiding my warranty?

Today I tested the rubber stopper on my Lumia 920. Rubber stopper works fine and it doesn't silence the earpiece, BUT first of all, you should cut off two-thirds of the stopper (be careful not to loose the piece when you cut it off because it is so small) and plug-in only the hat + about 5mm of the base with the ring on it. If you cut off the ring the stopper wont be properly hold in the socket. Hope you can see it on the image. Hat+base+ring

  • Amber broke my proximity sensor? Lumia 920

    Hi folks
My phone has been working fine since March but after updating to Amber tonight my proximity sensor has stopped working. Peek doesn't work and the screen no longer turns off if I hold the phone to my ear or cover the sensor. There is no dust in my FFC so I don't think it's that, plus I made calls earlier today and the sensor was still working.
I've tried 2 soft resets but they haven't helped, is my only option a hard reset? I don't want to lose all of my app data

Seems like a hardware issue to me. Get it checked at Nokia Care centre.
    Best Regards,

My proximity sensors not working during calls . Pls help me fix the bug. I updated from amber to lumia black

my wife had the same issue, even though it didn't look like it was covered, and the screen protector has a hole there, the cosmetics seem to create an invisible barrier, and once I cleaned it well, the sensor was working correctly.

  • Proximity sensor Lumia 925

Dear Lumia people... a question regarding my Lumia 925.
My phone is a few months old (about 3) and today I saw my call screen didn't go off when talking with some one.
I thought my proximity sensor died so I tried the glance feature where you wave to call the clock and it's working just fine.
I do use a screenprotector but I doubt that's causing the issue since the screen refuses to go off when I put it next to my ear. I also tried covering it with my finger but no such luck.
Does anybody know what's going on? I'm sure it's not dust either because if the sensor was blocked then the screen would go off always!
So, anyone? What to do in this situation?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If it is already cut around it then it isn't the screen protector. Try rebooting the phone and see if it helps To reboot, press and hold the vol down + Power buttons for around 10 seconds until the phone vibrates and restarts. If the reboot does not help then you might want to try a reset and failing that, then you might want to get it checked out at your local Nokia Care Poiut because it is more than likely a hardware issue at that stage.

  • Lumia 920 Disturbed after Black update

Once Lumia black came, i update my mobile. After that i am facing these issues
    proximity sensor stop working.
    Screen Rotation has stopped.
Camera app become crash whenever i try to use camera.
i tried to hardReset. And then download nokia suit from nokia site and try to install all software from scratch. First. 5mon it work fine after that again same problem.
i purchased my mobile from singapore. Currently i am in london. Can't go back. Even can check my mobile at UK nokia care because they refused because of international warranty . Surprise Nokia UK don't cover Nokia singapore product. If it will happen with nokia users then what gonna happen.
this is my business mobile. I started Lumia series when Lumia 800 comes...then Lumia 900 then 520, 720 and now 920. But i am really disappointed.
now may i know my handset future beside curtsy.

We understand your situation, terchoo. Since the issue started after installing Lumia Black, try to verify it the phone is successfully updated. Check if 'Lumia Black' shows up under Settings > Extras + Info. Try also to verify if all system applications are up-to-date. Since the camera won't work, just manually search the system apps in the Store or via Bing search. Check this link for the list of apps that needs to be updated: Nokia Windows Phone 8 App Updates
By the way, Nokia Suite isn't compatible with Lumia devices. Just to clarify, are you referring to Nokia Software Recovery tool instead of Nokia Suite?? Please check this link: Nokia Software Recovery tool
Hope to hear feedback from you soon.

  • Nokia Lumia 920 potential battery drain issue?

Can you Nokia confirm this? http://reach.jdbpocketware.com/topic/128305-to-nokia-ref-lumia-920/
    The issue illustrated in detail:
    Nature of Windows Phone buttons
Pressing either the power button or the camera button will cause the device screen to turn on, even when the proximity sensor detects proximity.
    The lockscreen behavior
Upon power on, screen lights up and shows the lockscreen (or camera), which runs a timeout to auto power off the device if screen is not touched in X seconds.
But if screen is touched, the timeout counter is restarted, so continuous touching could lead into a loop, the "death loop" which won't let the device to power off (standby) and will consume battery life.
    New touchscreen technology
The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a touchscreen that reacts to touch from pretty much any material such as metal or clothes. This can be dangerous.
    So here is a theory
When the phone is inside a pocket or bag it can be touched by other objects. These objects can press buttons and can touch/rub the screen. This will initiate the "death loop" for who knows how much time, could be minutes or hours, depends on how active the user is since body movement will produce friction between objects/clothes and touchscreen:
The "death loop" will drain battery and battery is precious.
    Solution?
Should be simple: screen must not power on if the proximity sensor detects proximity. Current version of Windows Phone does not take care of this. The big question is: will Windows Phone 8 take care of this? Is the Lumia 920 a potential battery drainer?

I don't understand why we have to spend our valuable time in the forums for days and nights to FIND HOW TO FIX THAT CRAB!! NOKIA company did not handout these devices FOR CHARITY.All of us had paid around a thousand dollars to buy this Phone. They have got to work overtime to fix it and publish a solution otherwise recall the devices back.

  • How to Clean the Call Speakers - Lumia 920

This is a bad idea if you have a Lumia 920. Maybe you could try this on other phones but the quality of the Lumia 920 just pushes the dust around the inside of the phone and into the front camera somehow. I have had 3 Lumia 920 and the first two suffer from dust in the front camera which I think also affects the proximity sensor. I though that I was treating the phone wrong but it also happened to the windows store guy. There was an article on Windowsphonecentral.com about this and as for learning how to clean the speakers I would like to find out too.
Moderator's Note: A more appropriate subject was provided as this post was moved to the appropriate board.

You could use anti static cloth or compressed air to clean ive seen people using hoovers etc NOT ADVISABLE.
I would sent it to nokia care are its a known issue,it will be done under warranty.
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • Lumia 920 seldom does not respond while in sleep m...

    Hi,
I encountered the same issue along with another abnormal condition too. Phone turns into locked state and the screen stops glowing (blank black screen), indicating idle state. It doesn't respond when I press unlock button. Also it does not respond for Camera, and Volume buttons too. But, when I connect it to a PC in that state I am able to browse the phone normally via PC only. Phone still remains buggy. As a work around pressing volume-keys + power key + camera key simultaneously restarts the device and resumes to normal state. However, previous state of phone isn't restored i.e., device starts as it were normally restarted.

Sorry, couldn't find any place to post this. It seems that there is, at least on my phone, a semi-reproducible bug that stops the volume control from working.
Steps to reproduce (from clean phone, ie. just freshly booted, no remnant IE tabs):
    1. Turn on phone.
    2. Open music+videos (Xbox music) app. Play a song that is locally stored on the phone.
    3. While the music is still playing, open up an Internet Explorer tab and navigate to youtube (m.youtube.com).
    4. Play an HD movie file. I played Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" preview #9. Your previously playing music will stop playing.
    5. After a few seconds, stop the youtube video playback by hitting the Windows button.
    6. Go back to the music+videos app. Play a song that is locally stored on the phone.
On times that the bug shows up, the music plays at a fixed volume. Using the volume rocker will cause the volume display to increase and decrease, but the actual volume will not change unless you change the volume to 00/30, at which point the sound will mute. If the bug doesn't show up, repeat steps 3 through 6 until the issue shows up. You don't need to reboot in between attempts.
Interestingly, volume control still works if you go back to the youtube video. The issue shows up when using the loudspeaker as well as when using headphones. If nobody else can reproduce it, we can start trying to figure out if it's certain music file types or something that cause it. Diagnostic information below:
Model: NOKIA Lumia 920 Carrier: AT&T
OS Version: 8.0.9903.10 Firmware revision number: 1232.2109.1242.1001 Hardware revision number: 1.0.0.0 Radio software version: 1.0.202041.3 Chip SOC version: 8960
