Lumia 925, earpiece audio trouble (voice calls)

Background: I am a T-Mobile USA subscriber. Previously owned a Lumia 710, then switched to 810 when it became available. Great products; I've been very happy with both. Two weeks ago gave the 810 to another family member and got the Lumia 925.
I love the 925. The screen is great, the phone is light, and the camera amazing. Except for one thing. The first day I had the 925, I noticed that the audio from the earpiece did not no sound right. While on calls, the earpiece had a nasty buzz to it, sounding like a damaged speaker. The audio quality while on speakerphone was perfect, so I could not blame T-Mobile's network. I took the phone back to T-Mobile and they replaced it, no questions asked.
The second 925 sounded great. The earpiece audio was clear, without any buzzing or audio glitches. I was a happy man and everything was great, that is, until yesterday. Now the second 925 developed a similar bad audio quality during calls, but only from the earpiece. The speakerphone sounds fine, and using a bluetooth headset sounds fine also. It is not easy to describe the "badness" of the audio but there is a significant decrease in quality. The audio level seems to be down; with the volume all the way up, you can barely hear the other caller. The audio also has a buzzy, muffled quality to it, almost as if it is coming out of a tin can, and it is not easy to understand the caller. I tried calling my old Lumia 810 and the sound on the 810 is just fine. The trouble seems to be only the earpiece on the 925.
This morning I went back to T-Mobile and they replaced the SIM card. I'm not sure how that would help, but they said it should help if this is a network issue. That was 5 hours ago and the audio quality has not improved at all. I have also performed a full phone reset, then reloaded my previous settings, but the problem persists. At this point it appears to be a hardware issue, but it is very odd that it happened on the first 925 right away, and on the replacement one as well, but after two weeks. Beside the bad earpiece audio the phone works great. The apps work as they should, and the camera is lovely, but if I first need the device to function as a phone.
I am debating if I should try a third Lumia 925. I am a bit reluctant, as I'm afraid that it might break again. At least now it is within the 30 day return period, but what if this issue happens later? I would love to stick with Lumia but these issues with the 925 are worrisome.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem with my Nokia Lumia 925.  Voice in the earpiece audio is otherwise ok but when the other person is saying the S-letter in a word the earpiece audio makes it sound like other person is having a lisp or something. It's really annoying. Same effect comes when other person on the line is inhaling or exhaling. There is this whoosh sound the earpiece is making on S-letters, inhale - exhale sounds and on other low frequency background noices. Phone was like this from my first calls after unboxing. ...
I was thinking how to describe my audio problems with 925 but you did it perfectly! I have exactly the same problems with the S-letters, inhaling, exhaling etc. which makes every voice call more or less annoying experience.
I was thinking to replace the unit but the longer I read this thread, the more I start to think this is "a feature" i.e. bad design and/or poor HW choices. That said, ff this is so common issue, I wonder howcome there wasn't anything about this in those several reviews L925 was subjected to when it was released. Or are the reviewers so busy in testing the 'smart phone' feature that they do not spend time to mundane stuff like voice call quality.
I love the phone otherwise; looks great, has fantastic camera, crisp and cleat display - anyhow, had I known about this, I would have left this to the store.

I was making a Skype call from my Lumia 925 yesterday and with Skype the earpiece audio was clear and there was no whooshing disturbing the call. So i guess the speaker is working properly in Lumia 925 but the problem might be in 3G/4G reception (or somewhere else) that disturbs the call quality creating this whooshing in a call.
Havent' tried myself but if this is true, this starts to sound like some voice codec issue. ...which would be strange since one would think that the same speech encoding/decoding implementations are used in all Lumias so why would there be problems specifically in 925.
The good with this option would be that it's probably possible to fix with SW update. Provided that Nokia is aware of the problem or better yet, interested to anything about it.

  • Lumia 925 disabled mike and voice recording issues...

    Dear Nokia Team
It has been a unpleasant experience dealing with the Nokia Care centre.
I have not got any solution for the complaint registered. Its been over 45 days now.
Inspite of escalating the matter several times i have not got any response
and solution from the concerned team. Its a horrible experience and i wouldnt recommend nokia to anyone henceforth.
The problem of Out going audio on loud speaker mode and voice recording has
been not functioning after 8.1 Update and this has been a common problem
with lot of 925 users. This problem has occurred due to some issues in the
    mother board of the device.
And is within the scope of warranty terms and conditions.
As highlighted by several lumia 925 users, this is a common problem with this intrument.
The handset is under normal wear and tear conditions and still i have been
    denied any service under warranty.
This is absolutely unprofessional attitude from the Nokia team.
Henceforth, i would be compelled to highlight this matter to social media
    followed with legal complaint.
Its been a non satisfying and unhappy experience dealing with Nokia.
I would be escalating this matter.
Thanks for such a great service !!

hi mate we are a user to user forum only so cannot assist you here. u need to persist with your Nokia Care location and if they are not being helpful, then escalate the issue to head office of Nokia in your region.

  • Lumia 925 earpiece failure

Very disappointed that after only a month of using this phone the earpiece has failed: can’t hear a person on the other end unless I plug in earphones or switch on the loudspeaker. For such expensive piece of equipment this was rather unexpected.
This is further complicated by the fact that I’m using the phone in a location other than location of purchase so the warranty is not valid.
I’m not looking for solution here (“hard reset your phone”, “visit a service centre”, anything else?), I’m just trying to attract attention to the hardware quality issue.

Hmmmm... I wasn't aware there was a dual-sim version of the 925... are you sure?
Seems funny that the earpiece would work with one sim and not the other...  Or are you saying you swap sim cards?
If this is the case, and the problem manifests itself with only one sim card, then one would think that it is likely a problem with the sim card itself (although why that would be, I can't imagine).
I have a 925 and have experienced no problems whatsoever with the earpiece, speakers or microphones.

  • Nokia lumia 925 display problem

    Hi everyone,
I have owned Lumia 925 and having trouble with its display as it gets low in din light. It gets lie even greater than the phone's default low level.

It's the same on my 920 and 1020. When brightness is set to automatic the screen does dim down to a level below the phones low brightness level when in a dark or dimly lit room.
There isn't anything that can be done about this other than setting the brightness level to one of the manual settings and disabling automatic brightness.

  • Lumia 925 Audio recording stopped

My Lumia 925 audio recording has stopped working. Not working for Video surround sound recording and even WhatsApp sound recorded messages cannot go. Just hissss sound gets recorded. Can any help how to restore this?
    Solved!

well, since people can hear you on a call, it's not a hardware problem with the microphone.
It appears to be something wrong with your recording apps -- the camera (in the case of video) and whatsapp.
    First attempt would be to:
    a) install another camera app with video capability and see if IT will record audio. and
    b) uninstall and reinstall whatsapp to see if that fixes the problem.
If that doesn't work, to a backup, then try a hard reset and re-install the apps one by one, confirming that recording works after each install.

  • Audio quality during call on lumia 820 is terrible

Hi i have noticed that audio quality through headphones on my lumia 820 is terrible. On full volume , the sound is very low and its really tough when you are outside your room. Without headset its little better but i have checked with other headset and its same. People are not able to hear my voice on the other end of calls with and without headphones. I heard this is a common problem with everyone. Please do let me know that it is the problem with my phone ir in general with lumia 820.

Hi, That's unfortunate for you. My Lumia 820 headphone audio quality is great. That is true that the sound level should be higher as in sometimes I have to crank the volume level up to 30/30 to get good and loud sound output. Still, I have no personal complaints about 820 audio quality. Perhaps they'll update the output levels higher in next patch.

  • AUDIO NOTES - LUMIA 925

I have recently transferred by bluetooth some audio notes from my old nokia E71 to my new Lumia 925.
I cannot find them on the 925. Anyone have an idea of where they are on the 925? What app do I use to retrieve them?
    Many thanks,

  • Minor bug: Smart Audio and voice/video call

Hi. There is a slight bug regarding the Smart Audio driver. Here's how to get the problem:
    1. As we all know, the speakers for X220 isn't exactly loud. So I overcame this problem by going in Smart Audio and selected the custom preset for EQ, setting all the sliders to maximum.
    2. Go have any kind of voice/video call, be it Skype or MSN. As Smart Audio senses a voice call, it sets the audio into VOIP mode.
    3. Here's the problem. After you finished the voice call, the EQ settings doesn't go back into my previous setting (the custom preset), rather, it goes back to "Off", the default setting.
    Thank you.

    hey jamestan,
have you tried uninstalling the Smart Audio driver and then install the latest version which is available on our website?
    If not, kindly do so.

  • Lumia 925 Wifi calling

Does Lumia 925 comes with Wifi calling on T-Mobile...???
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have had a 925 since July 17th, first day on T-Moblie.  There is a large icon on the screen for it. However, WIFI calling does not work. The T-Moblie tech support people have been overly delightful, charming, etc. However, even with changing out the Sim card, changing out the phone, it still does not work. I am now waiting for a third set of engineers to dazzle me with a solution.
You can quickly test out WiFi calling. Click the WiFi icon on the main screen. Set WiFi Calling to WiFi ONLY.  Next check your wifi connection to the net by opeing the browser and connecting to a website of your choice. If you see it, your connected.
Once confirmed, now try to place a Call. It will quickly tell you that the call has ending, and you have no CELL connection.
Now, here is what I think is wrong.  When you want to make a call over WiFi, you need to make a Internet network connection to a secure T-Moblie VOIP server first.  Watching via packet sniffing on my network, I saw no such packet connections being attempted.
I hope they get this fixed soon.

  • Audio recording on Nokia Lumia 925

    I have just got a Lumia 925.
I always use my mobile to record brief audio messages ,usually brief notes to remind me of medical appointments etc.
How do I use the microphone on the Lumia to record audio notes?
Also,I have bluetoothed old audio messages (ones that were on my laptop, having been previously transferred from my old E71 nokia,a great phone!!) to my new Lumia. How do I access them? Where are they saved on the Lumia 925?
    All help appreciated.

I tried soft reset option , normal turn on and off and even tried using other headsets too . And still the problem is not resolved.

  • Noisy voice call on Lumia 720

I have Lumia 720 phone and most of the time there is noise during voice calls. When I use same sim in my old nokia 6233 it works fine. It also works fine on my wife's Lumia 620. I even tried getting new sim issued from Vodafone but still same problem.
Please tell me how to get rid of this problem?

Is it noisy for you listening or the person you are talking to?

  • Lumia 520 voice calling

I'm the new owner of a Lumia 520, and a very fine phone it is too.
I use the voice calling facility with my car's bluetooth hands free kit (Nokia CK-7W) which works well, but I have one little niggle with it. The initial 'say the name now' tone and the read-back confirmation of the name are extremely quiet through the bluetooth kit, almost inaudible in fact. The volume of the call itself is fine, which leads me to believe they are sent from the phone at low level.
Is there any way of increasing the volume of these notifications?

Thanks for the update, SonicBlue. Let's further verify if the issue is SW related or not. Try the following steps and see if the 'call' voice command will work:
    1. Reboot the phone. Press and hold the volume down & the power key for 10-15 seconds until it vibrates and restarts. This won't erase any of your files, but you will need to re-set up the date & time settings.
    2. Since the phone is already running Lumia Cyan, try checking if the system apps have already been updated as well. Go to Settings > swipe to applications > store > check for updates.
    3. Try to use the speech feature using another language pack. This will help verify if the issue is related to the English UK language pack that you're currently using or not. Make sure that the phone's regional settings are correctly set as well. Some commands only work within supported countries. You can check this link for info about the availability of voice commands per country: Feature and service availability - Go to Speech.
    Let us know the outcome.

  • Lumia 925 + wireless charging back = broken BT voi...

I'm posting this in case anyone else has discovered this problem.
I've got a Lumia 925 with the wireless charging back fitted. If I use the phone with a Bluetooth headset to listen to audio on the phone, it is fine. If I use the BT headset, or BT functionality in my car, to make or receive a telephone call, the voice audio is very broken and intermittent. Sometimes ending and restarting the call clears it, but not very often.
What *does* cure the problem is removing the wireless charging back. I have noted that the phone does NOT need to actually be charging for the interference - it just needs to be fitted.
I am NOT sure if the problem is being caused by the accessory or by the phone itself. I am arranging for the accessory to be replaced first (less hassle) but it could well be the phone.

I am having the same exact problem. I was initially thinking that this is some compatability issue between my car's integrated BT support, but as you suggested, once I have removed the charging cover, the issue is gone. What's interesting is that this will continue even if the cover is removed from the phone and until next restart of the phone.
Anyone has solution to this? BTW: I can confirm that in my previous Lumia 920 and my wife's Lumia 820 with wireless cover this does not happen.
