Lumia 925 Volume software limit?

Hey guys, Just made the switch back to Windows Phone after a long stint with iOS and Windows Mobile before that..
Anyway. It seems the output of the Lumia's headphone jack is limited in software by some means. I have an aftermarket pair of headphones with a higher impedance (23 ohms) and the volume on these is quite low.
Now i fully understand that with higher resistance that higher voltages from the output amplifier are required to achieve the same SPL but it seems the limit on the 925 is set quite low. For example all of my iPhones have driven this pair of headphones quite well as well as every laptop I've used.
The device makes large jumps in volume from the 0/15 range but after that point increases in volume are minute. to the point that even at 30 I can still hear light conversation on the train and I'm being forced to carry around my iPhone 4S just for music..  The Amplifier in the 925 obviously has some punch as it can drive the internal speaker quite hard. I'd really like to continue using these headphones if at all possible as I've ordered custom foam buds and the like for them, I'm already dissapointed that the built in mic doesnt work (works fine on my lenovo laptop) but I understand that as vendors sometimes have differences in standards.
So is this a software limit I've missed somewhere to prevent kids for damaging their hearing with cheap headphones or have I simply lucked out with a product that is incompatible with my existing headphones?

AFAIK this feature/limit may be a legal requirement in certain regions for the protection of hearing, having said that I seem to get a variation in volume on my Lumias depending on the headset I use and speakers I might use, volume definitely higher through 360 speakers or over ear headset. Really doubt it will be changed even though it possibly could be :-\

  • Lumia 925 volume problem playing music

when playing music the volume decreases after 15-20 minutes, I have to keep increasing volume so i can hear anything. Using headphones I have to increase volume to 30 for reasonable sound, but only happens after 15-20 minutes...soft reset does not help. Hardware issue or software? Anyone had this problem? It did happen once after a warning on screen about hearing damage at high volume...

It is not a software or hardware fault/bug. It is a generic warning. I hear music at volume 15-18 and it very audible, as I use a noise cancelling ear-phones I don't have to increase the volume higher when I'm outside.

  • Nokia Lumia 925 Windows phone keeps shutting down

I have had a problem for the past 2 months, my Nokia Lumia 925 with Win 8.1 keeps shutting down spontaneously. (I did not have this problem before 8.1)  This is my third phone in the last 2 months (warranty program keeps sending me replacements) and it shut down for the first time this morning. All 3 have developed the same problem, the phone will shut down spontaneously and the only way to start it up again is a soft reset (Volume down + Power for 15 seconds). I have had a total of 10-15 shutdowns between the 3 phones and this is a conservative estimate.
I am thinking that this has to be a setting or an app that I use (and few others do) that is causing the shutdown since I have only seen a few other similar issues in the forums. Here are some of the basic facts about my situation and some of the actions I have taken:
                  - I have wiped the phones repeatedly (3 phones wiped a total of 3 or 4 times not including the initial setup of the replacement phones, which is getting really old--really fast).
                   - I have tried turning off NFC, but that obviously  wasn't the issue because NFC was off this morning when it shut off.
                    - I have tried trimming the screen protector/screen guard I installed as suggested in one of the other forums even though that seemed ridiculous (I think that was a different model phone too, but I gave it a shot)
I have not noticed any common occurrence such as
--when a certain app is running
                               --when it is on/off charger,
-- When the battery is full or low (it was 24% this morning).
-I have 2 chargers, 3 if you include the car charger that I have never had to use due to great battery life.
                   - I have called tech support several times, all AT&T can tell me is that this is not a known issue and I should wipe it again. Nokia says the same and that I should send it back to them for repairs. That seems fruitless to me because I have had 3 different phones, what are they going to repair that a new phone won't fix?
It takes me 3 hours to reinstall and set up my apps, I am getting very frustrated. I really love the way this phone functions, the software is good, the screen is brilliant and very sensitive, the camera is great (although a bit slow), and the size and feel are perfect for me...I hope that someone here on the forums can help.
Thanks for your help in advance...

    Hello, mariaadamsky.
We appreciate you reaching out to our community regarding your concern. You are using a Lumia 925 as well, correct? Did something happen to your phone that possibly caused such behavior? Did you try doing fixes on it?
Latest software released for Lumia phones is the Lumia Cyan. To confirm that you have it installed on your phone, go to Settings> extras+info. You can also try going to Settings> phone update> check for updates to check if there's an available update. Are your system apps also updated? While connected to WiFi, go to Store> ...> downloads to check for pending updates. Let's hope that the phone will not shut down while doing this process.
By the way, we can try other fixes that could help us identify the real cause of the issue. In case you wish to have it repaired in a Nokia Care Point, warranty claim may vary per region and Nokia does not have an international warranty. Also, creating a backup is a must to avoid data loss. Where did you buy the phone and where are you located right now? To know about the manufacturer's limited warranty, go here: http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/guides/Nokia_Manufacturers_Limited_Warranty_with_W....
We look forward to your reply.

    - Music + videos apps, when you swipe your music in the apps, the apps freezes, but music still playing. Frustrated when you trying to change tracks.
    - Video, i transfer some of my video via windows 8 to the phone, some of it lagging while playing the video. i have try numerous video format, it is still the same. I think it is a software problem. It works fine on my old lumia.
    - Auto reboot, my phone has been reboot for 2 times, one time is after a called, another one is after i finish using my wechat application.
Lastly, i love lumia 925, i think the design and the pictures capability are what i really in love with, but i hope someone from nokia could tell me how to solve the above problems.

Hi, Di_vico. Does this mean you are not using the case anymore? Do you have a Lumia 925 as well?
As the concern is present with a case on, try doing the below steps. Let's check if these will correct it.
    1. Press and hold the volume down and the power buttons at the same time until you feel a vibration (about 10-15 seconds). Your phone will restart automatically.
    http://www.windowsphone.com/en-ph/how-to/wp8/phones-and-hardware/restart-my-phone
    2. Check that your device is running the latest software version. Go to Settings > phone update.
    http://www.windowsphone.com/en-ph/how-to/wp8/basics/how-do-i-update-my-phone-software

When i play music i can hear it only through he left part of the speaker on the phone's back.
If i try and put my finger on the right side ,, nothing happens . If i cover he left side , i block all the sound output. Can someone tell me what should /could i do , on my own ? Thanks

    Good day, arsaboss.
We understand where you're coming from. How's the phone doing? Did something happen to your phone that possibly cause such behavior? Any fixes you've tried like press and holding both the volume down & the power keys for 10 seconds or a reset under Settings> about> reset your phone?
When was the last time you updated your phone's software? Can you confirm that you have the latest one by checking if 'Lumia Cyan' is shown under Settings> extras+info? How about your system apps? See: http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Pool-of-Knowledge/Nokia-Windows-Phone-8-App-Updates/td-p/1640082. By the way, where are you located?

  • Lumia 925 rebooted after cyan update (everything i...

    Hi all,
I installed Cyan update less than a week ago (Finland). Everything worked fine, but today my Lumia 925 started to install by itself software updates after which it erased ALL information (pictures, personal software. addressbook  etc) from the phone! I also received an SMS from Microsoft congratulating me for buying a Lumia! All the software that is left is the "original" as if I just had purchased the phone.
I logged into my Microsoft account but no information was recovered. I guess this has to do with cyan update.
    Can you help me please?!

You should not need to use the software reinstallation tool in this case, simply perform a reset of the phone from Settings, provided the backup option was switched on before the update you will have a backup linked to your Microsoft account, and your contacts at least are automatically sunced with that anyway. Automatic back-ups are normally switched on by defalut.
When the phone starts after the reset, there is an option during the boot-up process that asks if you wish to reinstall an earlier backup. Again, as long as you had all options selected, the resotration would inlude all items from the last back-up.
With regard to the update happening automatically, the phone can (if the setting is switched on) download updates automatically but it is not installed automatically, you would have received a notification on the screen and you would have pressed to install, perhaps this happened at a time when you were preoccupied and you pressed without checking what the notification referred to.
The welcome message is an automated part of the initial boot-up process, even after resets and updates.

Unfortunately this doesn't set any precedent as a number of recent Nokia Lumia devices have had unpredictable issues upon their very first software release, which I am sure will be resolved in later update.

  • Lumia 925 noise cancelling mic problems

    I have two problem, questions:
First, I lived in Kuwait and there I bought a Nokia lumia 925 with 12 months Nokia warranty, however I moved back to my home country, is the warranty valid here too?
    -the real problem- :
Unfortunately I need it since the noise cancelling Mic does not work on it. The other microphone at the bottom of the phone works great, because during a phone call there is no problem, they hear me.
However I expected today, when I recorded a video and played it back, it was not mute, but it was like the phone would be in water, I only heard strange muffled sounds. I looked after it, I had been cleaning it for an hour: I blew air into the top microphone with a pump, with my mouth... It did not succeed, it got a little bit better, since now that strange sound is more quiet, and when I shout in it , I can hear it.
Anyway it does not even work while I am recording in the OneNote app.
It is not a solution, it is still terrible.
    Please help me!

    Hi DaGentleman,
Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions!
Try to use the Nokia Software Recovery Tool and then check if it helps. See this link for more info: Nokia Software Recovery Tool. If that doesn't help, we suggest sending it back to a Nokia Care Point in Kuwait. Try to search it using this link: Nokia Care Point.

  • No Denim update Lumia 925

    Hello,
At our workplace we introduced the Lumia 925 to be our new basic work phone.
I work at the servicedesk and handout all the lumia phone.
Some of our people have experienced Exchange mail problems (slow mail delivery) and freezing phones.
Now I have looked into the phone version.
For somereason the phones are still on the Cyan update. (see screenshot.)
But it seems to have the firmware version of a Denim software version.
I have alrdy contacted our Telecom Provider (Vodafone NL) and they are also looking into the issue.
It seems the phones are not branded, so it seems teh telecom provider can do anything with this issue.
Can anyone tell my why our lumia phones still show Cyan and not Demin.

This is a known issue with the Extras+Info app which was resolved by a recent update. Check for updates for it from settings >applications > store > check for updates. Alternatively you can also use a free app like Lumia System Updater to do that.

Lumia Denim performacnce is not good as Cyan. I have lumia 925 and it is heating more after upgrade.
    What OS giant??
I reset the phone but still it is worst.
    It heats like a hell.
Lumia is like wired phone. very poor battery performance.
So many Apps are  not able to start.
I was happy with Cyan. Denim is not so great as expected.

  • Lumia 925 screen freeze.

    Hi everyone.
I have a returning problem with my Lumia 925 approx once a week since it was new. This happens on random, no particular tasks seems to set this off. Sometimes it is enough to press the volum down and the screenlock button until it restarts, but at other times it is necessary to have the charger connected, in order to make the screen respond after a restart.
Well...it does start...but it is rather annouing...I had the problem some few times with my previous Lumia 920 as well. And it makes me rather hesitant to buy a n Nokia the next time....
So...any suggestions as to why this is happening? Probably the OS, but not necessarily. B.t.w. I have the newest updates for my phone...always :-)
Thx for any suggestions how to avoid this in the future...
    Best regards.

    Hi jivolse,
    Welcome to the forum!
Did something happen to your phone before the issue starts to come up? Did you recently install or download any apps prior to this issue? When you you have the newest updates, does it also include the system apps shown at this link: Nokia Windows Phone 8 App Updates
Try also to do the tips offered at this link and see if the phone's performance will improve. This is for screen responsiveness, which is almost the same with your phone's issues: Troubleshooter for Nokia Lumia 925
Let us know how it will go.

  • Lumia 925 Black update minor problem

    Hello,
Just wanted to send feedback about my update experience.
    - I have Lumia 925
    - I have developer account and related MS updates already installed
    - When installing Lumia Black, installation started normally
    - During first reboot my phone got stuck at "goodbye"
    - I did soft reset (screen + volume down buttons)
    - Phone continued updating normally

Have you updated all your system apps following the update? If not, download and install an app called Lumia System Updater and use it to update all the system apps. See if that helps.

  • Nokia Lumia 925 display acting strange?

    Hello
I am not really sure if this is some sort of hardware bug or not ! But I dont think it is normal, I will try to describe it as good as I possibly can but English its not my native language, I will try to take it on video though.
I got my Lumia 925 few days ago (coming from L800 btw) and noticed that the display is acting little werid. Everytime I unlock the screen OR I tap the "back" button from any APP and I want to swipe the screen down/up/bottom/or else it is not responding. So everytime I close the app and I want to swipe display or click on some app (emails for example) I must wait like 1 or 1,5 second or the display wont register my touch. I dont think this is normal because I didnt have any similiar issue with L800 and thats way slower phone. I dont think that problem is me being too fast. The display is simply not registering first touch if its done too fast after unlocking or going back or multitasking.
I tried soft reset but the problem still persist. Its not a big deal though but its really annoying cause sometimes I need to swipe really fast and the phone is just ignoring the first touch and only reacts on the second one when I need to get off the finger and touch it again.
    Any clues?
I found a guy on forum describing similiar problem, I qoute:
"The problem is now that when I hit the unlock button, it takes maybe a second or two for the touch screen to start working. I swipe up but nothing happens then a second later I swipe again and it works. If I lock the phone and then unlock immediately the screen normally starts working immediately but if I lock it, wait a minute and then unlock it I have to wait a second or two for the screen to start working.
Really weird and definitely a software issue. Its not a huge issue, but is quite frustrating."

You could try a hard reset if you like or if not send the device to a nokia care point or to point of purchase.
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • Lumia 925, earpiece audio trouble (voice calls)

Background: I am a T-Mobile USA subscriber. Previously owned a Lumia 710, then switched to 810 when it became available. Great products; I've been very happy with both. Two weeks ago gave the 810 to another family member and got the Lumia 925.
I love the 925. The screen is great, the phone is light, and the camera amazing. Except for one thing. The first day I had the 925, I noticed that the audio from the earpiece did not no sound right. While on calls, the earpiece had a nasty buzz to it, sounding like a damaged speaker. The audio quality while on speakerphone was perfect, so I could not blame T-Mobile's network. I took the phone back to T-Mobile and they replaced it, no questions asked.
The second 925 sounded great. The earpiece audio was clear, without any buzzing or audio glitches. I was a happy man and everything was great, that is, until yesterday. Now the second 925 developed a similar bad audio quality during calls, but only from the earpiece. The speakerphone sounds fine, and using a bluetooth headset sounds fine also. It is not easy to describe the "badness" of the audio but there is a significant decrease in quality. The audio level seems to be down; with the volume all the way up, you can barely hear the other caller. The audio also has a buzzy, muffled quality to it, almost as if it is coming out of a tin can, and it is not easy to understand the caller. I tried calling my old Lumia 810 and the sound on the 810 is just fine. The trouble seems to be only the earpiece on the 925.
This morning I went back to T-Mobile and they replaced the SIM card. I'm not sure how that would help, but they said it should help if this is a network issue. That was 5 hours ago and the audio quality has not improved at all. I have also performed a full phone reset, then reloaded my previous settings, but the problem persists. At this point it appears to be a hardware issue, but it is very odd that it happened on the first 925 right away, and on the replacement one as well, but after two weeks. Beside the bad earpiece audio the phone works great. The apps work as they should, and the camera is lovely, but if I first need the device to function as a phone.
I am debating if I should try a third Lumia 925. I am a bit reluctant, as I'm afraid that it might break again. At least now it is within the 30 day return period, but what if this issue happens later? I would love to stick with Lumia but these issues with the 925 are worrisome.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem with my Nokia Lumia 925.  Voice in the earpiece audio is otherwise ok but when the other person is saying the S-letter in a word the earpiece audio makes it sound like other person is having a lisp or something. It's really annoying. Same effect comes when other person on the line is inhaling or exhaling. There is this whoosh sound the earpiece is making on S-letters, inhale - exhale sounds and on other low frequency background noices. Phone was like this from my first calls after unboxing. ...
I was thinking how to describe my audio problems with 925 but you did it perfectly! I have exactly the same problems with the S-letters, inhaling, exhaling etc. which makes every voice call more or less annoying experience.
I was thinking to replace the unit but the longer I read this thread, the more I start to think this is "a feature" i.e. bad design and/or poor HW choices. That said, ff this is so common issue, I wonder howcome there wasn't anything about this in those several reviews L925 was subjected to when it was released. Or are the reviewers so busy in testing the 'smart phone' feature that they do not spend time to mundane stuff like voice call quality.
I love the phone otherwise; looks great, has fantastic camera, crisp and cleat display - anyhow, had I known about this, I would have left this to the store.
    EDIT:
    supersape wrote:
I was making a Skype call from my Lumia 925 yesterday and with Skype the earpiece audio was clear and there was no whooshing disturbing the call. So i guess the speaker is working properly in Lumia 925 but the problem might be in 3G/4G reception (or somewhere else) that disturbs the call quality creating this whooshing in a call.
Havent' tried myself but if this is true, this starts to sound like some voice codec issue. ...which would be strange since one would think that the same speech encoding/decoding implementations are used in all Lumias so why would there be problems specifically in 925.
The good with this option would be that it's probably possible to fix with SW update. Provided that Nokia is aware of the problem or better yet, interested to anything about it.
