Lumia 928 "Soft-White" display color: Dull compare...

I was showing my 928 to a friend who has an Apple 5s and the difference in display quality was dramatic.  The "White" background on the 928 was dull in comparison.  It became painfully obvious when comparing Kindle, the Apple was truly page-white while the lumia as a dull slightly yellow off-white.  I had the color turned all the way to "Cool" and it was still no where near as sharp or brilliant as the Apple.
I also compared it to a white-balance card and the "white" background is simply NOT WHITE
I thought the Nokia displays were supposed to be  State of the Art,  am I missing something here or is there something wrong with my 928
Has anyone else made this comparison???

hi mate, if you believe that the screen is too yellow then you can take your phone to Nokia Care for inspection.

  • Lumia 928 no display

So I have had my Lumia 928 for over a year now and I love it! I have dropped it many times and brag about how durable it is, however recently I dropped it on the corner on accident and the glass craked. So naturally I called the microsoft store and verizon to see what my options are and I got nothing, so repairing it myself it is. I am a computer engineering student so I would say I felt confident in knowing what to do with the help of some YouTube videos. So I go on eBay and instead of buying just new glass I bought a whole new screen because it would be a lot easier to fix. I take my phone apart, replace the screen everything went great! Super easy! Went to turn it on and it turns on all the hard keys on the side work, the windows key, search, key and back key all work and light up. The phone vibrates and I can talk to Cortana but nothing shows up on the display. So i took it apart and checked it again to make sure i had the display plugged in right and I did. I reassemble it and again all of the same stuff.
I dont think it is a screen problem because the windows button, search, and back button all light up and work and they are tied to the same connector and screen.
Here is my thought, when I bought  it off eBay I bought it new and on the bottom it says proto.nokia.com So it is from a prototype lumia 928? Either way I dont think it should matter. Should it? I tried a soft reset and a hard reset and nothing. Any ideas?

Did you buy the display from a Chinese Ebay seller?
It's a prototype display which has been leaked from a contract manufacturer (of Nokia) to the third party sellers.
There's already been a thread about it: http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Lumia/Nokia-Lumia-1520-was-just-sold-a-prototype-model-what-do...
I purchased a brand new display for my wife's Lumia 1020. The seller was a Chinese guy on Ebay and when I received the display, I found out it's a prototype. I contacted to a friend of mine who works for Nokia/Microsoft and asked whether the display would be legal or not. He told me that Nokia/Microsoft is not selling any prototype material to third party sellers so then it's illegal and has been stolen from the contract manufacturer.
I wrote about it here and a Finnish guy (I'm also Finnish) contacted me and asked some questions. I told him "if I were you, I'd track down the leaker to find out who's not the trusted party". I offered to bring that prototype display to the nearest Nokia Care Center where they could examine it and maybe find out who has leaked those ones to Ebay sellers. But then I'd need to purchase a brand new OEM display at a decent price so a "trade" so to say. He never replied me so I guess they're not interested to find out the leaker. Bummer
So you replaced the display by yourself? Thumbs up mate! That's what I do as well! I wonder these discussions haven't already been censored from this forum since IMO moderators don't want people to take their own initiative to fix their phones even though when the warranty is not valid anymore

I can see if we can get your phone back on! I understand how important it is to have a phone. Have you tried this to see if we can get it back on? http://vz.to/1DZhteH . If it is still goes to a red Verizon screen and then to black we might need to do a master reset. While the phone is off try this:http://vz.to/1DZhXkU Be mindful this is the last resort because it will erase everything on the phone. If you have done back up assistant in the past you will be able to get you contacts back. Please let me know if you need any more help.

  • U430 dull display colors

I got a new u430 touch. Everything seems great except the display. I get the feeling that the colors are washed out and no black levels. Tried a simple test http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php
Unable to see the first 5 black squares. Poor contrast. These are visible in my 5 yr old dell vostro. Is a dull display and lack of vivid colors on u430 normal? Pretty disappointed since display colors are very important for me. Surprised how even a latest display is not vivid. Can someone advise what my options are? Does only U430 suffer from this problem? Are there any calibrations that can fix this to some extent? Are there any lenovo laptops with good display under $600

Did you find a solution? I've got mine rigged to a really old monitor - shamefully the display on that is miles better than the U430 - feels totally washed out!!

  • Colors displaying as dull yellowy-green; new monitor and calibration

Just got a new ASUS LCD monitor, and calibrated it with the Spyder 3 Express.
Now when I import a .CR2 file using Lightroom 3 to edit the RAW image, the color is displayed as yellowy-gray and dull.  It looks the same when I pull it into Elements 7, unless I remove all color management (which, if I save the image, actually then renders the image colors neon and oversaturated with lots of pink and red tones).  If I export the image from Lightroom 3 the image colors are correct and very different from how they look in Lightroom.
I also use the ACR editor with Elements 7 and I am having the same problem there.  Upon opening an edited Jpeg or a .CR2 RAW file there, the color is displayed as dull, grayish yellowy-green.
If I view the very same image in GIMP, Picasa or on the web, as long as the colorspace is intact (sRGB), the color is accurate.  Not so in Elements or Lightroom.
If you have experience with this problem is it the monitor, the calibration, or Elements and Lightroom?  I am beyond frustrated and need to see my colors properly.  I have not had this problem before.
    Thanks for your time.

I suggest re-reading C S S Simon's and my reply, including the links I provided with solutions and historical explanation – It is apparent you didn't!
Pay your money and make your display choice, but don't blame the wide gamut capable display because you are unwilling to learn how to use the technology advantages it provides!
    Please read this factoid:
All Wide Gamut Displays when properly setup to display in a "wide gamut" mode such as Adobe RGB will only display images correctly in color managed applications – PERIOD.
Your Asus display has two factory calibrated modes, Adobe RGB and sRGB, which will only work properly using the color profile provide to you on CD (or downloaded) by Asus – This the monitor profile Asus used when hardware calibrating your specific serial number monitor at the factory. The displays internal LUT contains that calibration information, and there is no way for you to recalibrate it using a Spyder 3 or other hardware calibrator. I am going to paste here three separate solution alternatives I made at the other post – Use only one (1):
Solution 1) Delete your i1 Display custom profile and install the Asus provided PA246Q driver and profile. Then use the monitor's "factory calibrated" Adobe RGB wide Gamut selector mode with Lightroom and other color-managed applications. When using non-color managed applications, switch your monitor’s mode selector to sRGB. Calibration using i1 Display or other hardware device cannot be used with this option. User hardware calibration should only be performed using the monitor's 'User Mode.'
Solution 2) In addition to your Asus PA246Q wide gamut monitor, install a second standard gamut sRGB monitor. Calibrate both monitors separately using your i1 Display unit, which will create separate profiles for each monitor. Use your Asus PA246Q wide gamut monitor only with Lightroom and other color managed applications. Use your second sRGB monitor for with both non-color or color managed applications. You may still have issues properly calibrating your Asus PA246Q monitor with its proper 'User Mode' selection as others have reported, but the results should be better than what you have now.

Solution 3) If none of the above works for you, get rid of the Asus PA246Q and buy a good standard "non-wide gamut sRGB display.

  • Colors dull, sometimes

I've had this problem before. I can't remember how I fixed it. This is in regard to my G5 Dual desktop. All of a sudden colors are dull, at least in some places. For example, the stock widget has green and red where it shows prices as being up or down. These have changed from bright green and red to dull green and red. On some web pages the colors of photos are dull and others normal. All the colors for Labels at the Finder level have gone dull.
I have tried restarting, shutting down completely, checking and switching my monitor color profile, zapping the PRAM, and I've checked the settings in Universal Access -> Seeing which appear correct with Black on White selected and Contrast at Normal.
Does anybody know what causes this or how to fix it?

There may be a graphic card processor issue or power issue behind changes in display colors
if they shift randomly and without explanation. Also, if the computer is running hot due to an
excessive dust accumulation then the power supply vents, fan, and other apparatus needs to
be cleaned of debris. This may also be the case in airflow through the channels where other
circuits are expected to lose their heat; since heat may be an issue behind hardware problems.
And troubleshooting can take on more than a few angles, since you have to find if there also
may be a software issue behind some of the symptoms the computer appears to display.
Do you have a heat indicating control panel such as Temperature Monitor? This kind of item
may allow it to be configured to report CPU heat sensor readouts & other sensors as available.
It is possible there may be a graphics card issue, and it could be failing.
Another source of odd behavior could be corrupted data on the system's hard disk drive; so
if there is something amiss there, that'd be another matter. Heat issues are suspect, though
not much more than a feeling at this point; some heat exchangers need cleaning more often
and there also may be some other problem going on. Failing hard drives also generate heat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Display color problem - asking for a color solution

So I have this serious problem with my Macbook Pro.
Some months ago I suddenly saw green colors in black area's and pink line colors in white areas.
Text on white background was extremely frustrating to read, since it was surrounded with small pink lines and flickering.
Note this was only near max white and max black areas of the screen.
I found out that it was due to a hardware failure, since slightly bending the laptop (!!) would remove the problem
Attaching an external monitor doesn't show the defect, and booting in Windows 7 (bootcamp) still shows the same screen problem.
Searching the web, it appears that it was a NVidia related heat problem, known to my model, but the offer to get it fixed for free by apple (since it was a known issue) had already run out december 2012 (!!). I think my laptop is about 3-4 years old, and the battery pretty much died on me the first year, probably due to heavy usage and the graphic card getting too hot. There are small sweat/corosion marks of where my hand are placed when typing, on the aluminium, due to how hot my laptop got. It sometimes got so hot I couldn't touch the aluminium on the top left corner near the 1-2-Q-W keys.
Fixing my Macbook is too expensive. Just getting someone to look at it to diagnose it (without repairing it), costs a lot in my country, and we have no official apple store, only authorized resellers. I know it's probably the motherboard, because I tried to unscrew the backlid and gently touch certain area's on the motherboard with a pen, while the computer was still running, to find out where the short circuit was. I only started this kind of trying to "self service" it, because I knew how expensive replacing the motherboard would be (if that was even the issue?).
I have multiple times tried to place something up against the sensitive area's on the motherboard, and then screw back the backlid, to put some pressure on it, which at first worked brilliantly and removed the color issue for some weeks, before it started reappearing. I think the heat from the laptop slowly makes the motherboard adapt, and the problem returns. Extremely frustrating indeed.
I hope I can one day afford a Macbook Air, but until then, I don't want to throw more money after my poor macbook (which I pronbably can't sell anyway, like previous mac's I've owned, the day get a new. It's too worn out + battery got only 5min on a full charge).
I think it's wisest to rather save the money for a Macbook Air, and try to survive until then. Therefor I was hoping someone could help me with a temporary solution.
In Windows 7, using the Nvidia Control Panel to apply color management, I was able to adjust the individual color output values, and thereby remove the the screen issue! Maybe the colors are not as good anymore, but it sure beats not getting a headache after 10minutes trying to read an article.
I tried the same thing on the mac, using Preferences>Displays>Color>Calibrate, but this guide is much harder to use to get a decent result (since only the last 2 options really makes a difference, but changes the colors completely, which I can't change by going back to the first color settings since then it just undos the last step I just did. I'm currently writing this with a very blue pale screen.
I also tried to use ColorSync Utility, expecting to enter values manually, but contrary to the articles I read about using ColorSync, I cannot edit the values in the color profile I created (I can only change the ASCII text input fields). Trying to save the profile gives me the error 'The Document "screenbug.icc" could not be saved.'
I tried to look for alternative color calibration software, but most of them required hardware, or expensive full version to unlock the settings I needed (like SuperCal).
I hope some tech savy users out there that can help me, or at least make my life with my macbook less of a pain.
    All help is much appreciated!!
PS: I've been a loyal Mac user since always. Few things I've learned is:
    1) Don't buy the first version of new hardware. Wait about a month for reviews, to check for issues. I had a problem with an expensive MacPro that had to be replaced, but luckily for free since it was Apple's mistake. Sometimes Apple products also get minor internal changes/fixes without announcements, to help solve reported issues from early buyers.
    3) Take care of you Mac, especially so because you can often sell your used Mac's for quite a value the day you want to upgrade. I've sold about 3 Mac's in my lifetime, for quite a gain, though I don't expect this macbook to do as well, if at all. But it's normally something to be cautious about.
    3) Don't order custom configurations from the Apple Store, if you can live without it (+ it's usually crazy overprices). I payed extra to get the NVidia GeForce 9600M, and was happy with it for the first couple of years, but is now causing me all the problems I have today + made my Macbook worthless.
Stick with what the default configuration if possible, as other configurations might not have been tested carefully.

Who exactly is your comment "I am asking you to fix this problem soon" directed at?
Remember that you are posting on a user to user forum so nobody can really help you.  If you want to give feedback to Apple, then contact them directly at http://www.apple.com/feedback.
Also, if you have an iPhone 3G and iOS 4.2.1 is the latest software that you can install on your phone, then there is absolutely nothing that anyone can do to fix the problem if you want to install Skype that requires iOS 4.3 - what do you think anyone can magically do?
iPhone 3G is a very old phone now and if you want to install Skype on your phone, then you need to go out and buy a new iPhone - either a 4s or a 5.  Nothing more to it.  Buy a new phone.

  • Nokia Lumia 928 Texting Problem

Just upgraded to the Lumia 928 (white) yesterday. A few hours after getting home with the device I realized I was not receiving text messages. I began to troubleshoot to the best of my knowledge. I can send/receive calls, send/receive picture messages, and send texts. The only thing I can't do is receive texts. I have had two friends both attempt to send me texts multiple times with no luck. I plan to go back to verizon today for their assistance, but was maybe hoping someone else in the forums was having the same issues. Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi there Lloyd,
I had the same problem with my new 928. Doing a complete shutdown and restart fixed the issue for me. I held the middle button on the phone until the shut-down dialog opened, used that to power down and restarted about a minute later. I've had no issues with text since doing that.
Hope this helps you (and that you are having as much fun as I am with the totally awesome phone).
    Regards,
    Andy.

  • Nokia Lumia (928) Problem.

I've recently been having this problem with my Nokia Lumia 928, I was doing a reset (Factory Reset) on my phone when I've been on spinning gears for a few couples last night. Waited and nothing, so I looked around and tried find other solutions.
I did the soft reset/hard reset but all I've been getting is the low battery, I plug it into the charger for a good 30 minutes + But still won't turn on and still saying it is low battery. I tried doing the resets again but basically all I'm getting are the two, spinning gears and the low battery. Also, while it's charging it randomly go'es to the spinning gears.

    Dear Juan,
Try this... taken from another forum... it really works:
    =============================================
After spending 8 hours trying to recover from spinning gears following a hard reset, of all the methods I tried, this is the one that worked:
    -Phone was showing spinning gears
    -Battery was low
    -Took Sim card out
-I logged into find my phone and erased my phone using the on-line feature:https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/my
-Let it sit for 1 hour then turned it off
-Press and hold the Volume down & Power buttons until the phone vibrates then release the power button but keep pressing the volume down key for approximately 10 seconds until you see a low battery on the screen.
    -If you don’t get the low batt and you get the Nokia lego then press the following buttons in this order;
    --Volume UP
    --Volume DOWN
    --POWER
    --Volume DOWN.
-Your phone will now automatically reboot and try again till you get the low batt
-When the low batt shows up do nothing, it will turn off by itself
-Let sit for 1 hour and turn back on
-Press and hold the Volume down & Power buttons until the phone vibrates then release the power button but keep pressing the volume down key for approximately 10 seconds until you see a low battery on the screen.
-Plug your phone into the charger when you see the low batt
    -If you don’t get the low batt and you get the Nokia lego and go back to the spinning gears of death then press the following buttons in this order;
    --Volume UP
    --Volume DOWN
    --POWER
    --Volume DOWN.
-Plug your phone into the charger when you see the low batt but not till you see it
    -Now press the following buttons in this order;
    --Volume UP
    --Volume DOWN
    --POWER
    --Volume DOWN.
-Your phone will now automatically reboot it will show the spinning gears again but within 10 mins it will start up as a new device.

  • Apple Studio 17" Display colors not right after thunderstorm

Noticed this afternoon, after a thunderstorm, that my 17" Apple Studio Display was not displaying colors correctly. All windows are reversed - white background is now black and text is white. Also photos look like 35mm negatives. My blue Apple standard background is now orange. I checked the Display section in the System Preferences and did the ColorSync calibration and troubleshooting (verify and repair). None of this has any affect. Any suggestions?

    Try Control-Command-Option-8
or select "Black on White" in the "Seeing" tab of "Universal Access" system preference.

  • Mystery: XP display color scheme : silver can result in black on black unreadable controls

My setup is a Dell PC running XP Professional.  Display Dell 1901 (also does this on Default Display).  Intel 82856G Integrated Graphics driver. LabVIEW 7.1.
The color settings for the 5 controls on the attached .vi are foreground: 179 179 179 and background 255 255 255 yet some appear as black on black in the XP display color scheme : silver and some appear as black on white.  By setting the XP color scheme to default, you can use the color sample and color fill tools to change whether a control will be black on black or black on white in the color scheme : silver view.  It appears like there is some "magic property" that is not foreground or background color that is being copied with the color sample and fill tools.
    Any ideas?

    Hello,
I was a bit puzzled by this myself until someone suggested I use the "color sucker" tool to find out what the current colors of the enums were.
The color sucker tool (aka eye-dropper) can be used by selecting the paintbrush tool and holding CTRL on the keyboard.  Now left-click the item you want to check the color of.  Right-click any object to bring up the color picker, and look at the colors in the history.  The one furthest to the right (that isn't "empty") is the color you just picked up with the color sucker.
You'll notice that on the problematic enums, the background color is "Hilight Text".  This is a system color that will change depending on the theme you use.  On the silver theme, it is black or near-black.  On the others it is white or near-white.
When picking colors, you might want to be careful to watch the text next to the curently selected color box.  If it has RGB values, this is safe (theme-independent).  It's also safe to use named colors in the "User" list, such as "Control Background".  But if the named color is a system color, it can change depending on your theme.
Disclaimer: I don't know if color sucker or eye dropper is the "official" term for this tool.

  • In Module, the Basic panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

In Develop Module, the Basic Panel (white balance, color saturation and tonal scale) disappeared.  How can I restore these tools?

When you say the Basic panel has disappeared, do you mean the whole right side panel or individual tools such as the White Balance tool is gone? If it is the whole right side panel that is missing, you may have hidden it. Using the Tab key, you can cycle between hiding and showing the side panels. You can also move your mouse over to the far right side of your screen to get the panel restored but it will disappear when you move your mouse off the panel. There is also a small triangle on the left edge of the right panel that you can right click on in order to determine the show/hide behavior (I personally use the manual mode).
Regarding the individual windows contained in the left/right panels, they can be opened and closed by clicking of the triangle that is displayed next to name of the tool in its header bar. While you can elect what modules will be shown on the LR Top panel, I am not aware of any mechanism to completely hide individual tools in the left/right panels. If all else failes, you can hit the Shift/Tab key combo a few times to restore all of your windows the the default behavior.

  • White-grey sky to blue with either blue or white/cream colored objects?

    Hi Everyone:
I took up a keen interest in bird photography earlier in the year. So many times when I go out the sky is grey or white.
I have many nice shots of snowy owls, great or snowy egrets and blue herons that would be even better if I had blue sky.
Use PSE 12 for a resource.
So basically my question is in two parts:
Considering I'm a beginner with mostly Lightroom experience:
    a) Blue Herons - Both background and main subject are either blue or have shades of blue. Goal is to look natural, smooth with defined edges, retain proper coloration and well-blended.
    b) Snowy Owls and Egrets are white or cream on a grey-white background.
I seek a nice contrast with well-defined edges.
if I use the smart brush on a snowy owl for instance it takes part of it and turns it also blue!
How  does one accomplish the above?
    Any bird editor tricks?
    Thanks in advance.
    Bruce

    Bruce,
The Alibony technique for sky replacement works best for me:
Watch Lesson 12: Quick Colorless Sky Replacement | Alibony Lessons for Photoshop Elements Episodes | How To Videos | Bli…
Here are my refined notes after watching the video: I posted most of it a few days ago in a reply.
You need 2 pictures: The one that you have with the drab sky which you wish to replace, and a picture of a "good" sky - just blue sky with clouds, nothing else on it. You can take the picture of the sky yourself, or download one from Alibony.
Also, familiarize yourself with the gradient tool, as we will be using this in step #7.
Open your picture (A) (File>open), and open the replacement sky picture (B)
On the sky picture (B), go to Select>all from the menu, then Edit>copy to place it on the clipboard
Go back to your picture (A), then Edit>paste. The new sky (B) should come in on a new layer
With the move tool, use the corner handles to reduce the size of the sky (B) to cover the old sky on (A)
In the layers palette, set the blending mode of (B) to darken
Set the foreground color chip to white
Get the Gradient tool out of the toolbox, and drag a foreground to transparent, linear gradient from below up to the top of the tree line, while holding down the shift key.
With a soft white brush, at reduced opacity, gently paint the horizon a bit, as we want the horizon to be a tad lighter than the rest of the sky.
If necessary, add a few clouds with the Return to Eden set.
TIPS: The Return to Eden cloud brushes are available for download from Adobe Studio Exchange (free)
