Lumia virus protection banking etc

Please confirm Lumia 920 ok for banking, ebaying, Paypaling, etc. As at mid 2014. Have been reading past posts saying Windows/Nokia phones ok as closed App Store. And as long as you don't accept weird offers. And PC viruses cannot infect phones. But very old posts from years ago.

yes that is correct. Windows Phone 8/8.1 is very sandboxed, so there is no risk at all of getting infected by viruses etc. if a page does contain malicious content, it warns you and throws you back out anyway. i have done banking and other activities on my 920 and other WP8 phones since and have had absolutely no issues.

  • Do i need additional virus protection for macbook pro

I have a MacBook Pro - GH2 Intel with 4 GB of memory.  Upon login I have a blank screen except for 2 silhouettes. One silhouette is my name, the other silhouette is "guest user"  When I put in my password which is necessary each time, I then get a screen "Do you want the application "open exec" to accept incoming network connections?" (I press "allow") and next screen is "Do you want the application "openinfo" to accept incoing network connections? (I press "allow"). Next screen is SKYPE and each time I need to manually go in and "quit" Skype.
Prior to this happening, I was getting the whirly bird all of the time and everything extremely slow.  I have an appointment at genius bar in 5 days but am concerned about a virus, etc.
How can I protect myself so I can do banking, etc., prior to genius bar appointment? Should I purchase one of Apples anit virus programs from the app store?
    Thank you!!!!

    Could be malware/adware.
    Try:
Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac
    Next
Adwaremedic: Removes all known adware from your Mac
If you can't download it since the malware is preventing it then see:

  • Virus Protection

I've been reading all the comments about not needing any other virus protection for my MacBook Pro 10.9.4 version.  My Kaspersky Internet security is about to expire, so I don't need it?  Will it still be safe to do internet banking?

    1. You don't need it.
    2. Yes, as long as you keep Mac OS X and your browser up to date, and ensure that all your banking websites use https.

  • I've been hearing in todays news about a virus that can affect mac computers.  When purchasing my Mac computer I was informed I didn't need virus protection.  What do you advise now?

Currently my mac doesn't have additional virus protection software.  When purchasing my mac 4 years ago I was told it wasn't necessary because it was so rarely needed due to Mac's Encryption etc.  With today's news I hear that it possible the current virus or bug that is out there is aimed at Mac's especially.  What is the advice now?

It's not a virus. It's just the latest scare tactic promulgated by popular media outlets to ensure the uninformed among us remain uninformed. The fact that you (or they) characterized it as a "virus" is proof of that, on its face.
    What is the advice now?
If you are running a web server, apply the patch by downloading it from the GNU project archive. If you don't know what that is, how to obtain it, or how to apply it to your server, then you are not affected and there is nothing you need to do.
Apple announced they are "working to quickly provide a software update for our advanced UNIX users."
There are plenty of bad things that could happen to a system due to existing vulnerabilities, known or unknown. There is no reason for any more concern today than there has ever been. Bash has been included with OS X for years, perhaps since its inception, and the particular flaw that was just discovered may have existed for years prior to that.
Similar vulnerabilities may also be discovered and exploited, now or in the future. The resulting effects, if there are any, cannot be accurately predicted.
    Until then:
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.

Your profile says you are using OS X Mountain Lion, so if that's true then you have all of Apple's anti-virus protection and if Software Update says you are fully up-to-date on all your Security, Java, etc. updates, then you are fully protected against all currently known malware that can impact OS X and Apple apps.
Keep Java (not JavaScript) disabled in all your browsers unless you must visit a site that requires it, and turn it back off as soon as you are finished to make certain you aren't one of the first to discover the next Java threat that will most certainly show up one day soon.

  • Virus protection attacking lookout?

I am running Lookout  6.0 on windows XP.  I have a 500 unit license and an integrator developer  license.
We had a virus attack that required us to change our virus protection  software.  Once we had cleaned the virus, Lookout runtime would not run  without a username and password.  We did not previously have to enter a username or password.  Regardless of the password I enter, I see a message: "Logon failed:  Lookout security file does not  exist!"
Also, when I try to  run Lookout, my virus software (Avast!) catches ljJARkhf.dll as a trojan  virus.  Is this a file used by Lookout?
I tried repairing  the software from the installation CD, but that did not work.  I got a  message that Lookout was already installed and the repair did not  run.
How can I get  Lookout running again?
    Thanks for your  help.

Sure the Mac can get viruses.
Off the top of my head I can think of two:
The oompa loompa virus and the OSX.Leap
Also, if you have (gasp) Microsoft Office installed on your Mac, it's been known to have viruses.
Also, there's a virus that infects the ID tag of an MP3 that executes when you open it in finder.
BUT, these are rare. But of course the Anti-Virus companies make virus scanning software for the Mac. Why? because some people will by it with the tiniest scare, and those anti-virus companies are the first ones to initiate a scare. Sounds a bit like insider trading, but in this case it's legal.
I've been reading about the scare tactics that have been happening in the UK to do with the iPhone and the new AppStore. The likelihood of a virus getting into an app on the store is pretty minimal due to the amount of tracking Apple does on the code, but can it happen? Sure. Some of these idiots don't mind getting caught.
But as of now, I'd certainly say you don't need it. BUT, if you feel you MUST get your music via P2P and you feel you MUST load this music into iTunes and sync it with your iPhone, I say you're on your own if you have trouble.
Even on a PC, if you use common sense whilst browsing the Internet, checking your mail, etc., you can go your whole life without getting infected.
So, you're question is valid, and I found this article which may be interesting to you:

  • HT4650 virus protection on macbook air?

I just purchased a MacBook Air.  Do I need to install virus protection? Thanks.

If you run Microsoft Windows on your MacBook Air, yes, you'll want malware protection.
OS X works nicely out of the box.
But it's possible to install stuff that can or will cause problems.
There's very little malware stuff that'll hit you unexpectedly; what's been around lately has targeted Oracle Java or Adobe Flash vulnerabilities, or it's malware that's managed to convinced the user to install it on behalf of the attacker - examples of the "install me" stuff include various (free) "anti-virus" tools, "video players", "Flash Player updates" (those not from Adobe) or other "software updates", or (unnecessary) "performance optimizers" or "cache cleaners", etc.
On OS X, learn to install from the main distro sites only (eg: if you use Flash, only install it by going to Adobe's web site), learn to ignore the Facebook malware warnings ad campaigns, ignore the rest of the advertising pop-ups that are around the net and the rest of the OMG YOU'RE INFECTED!!!! stuff, don't install something that you didn't expressly go looking for, either don't install Oracle Java (and it's not installed by default on 10.8) or keep Java disabled until and unless you're actually using it (and that's Java, which is very different from Javascript), and either don't install the Adobe Flash Player tool or remove it and if you have it installed keep it current and yourself get a Flash blocker for Safari or whichever browser you're using.
And the usual advice: keep your OS X and add-on tools current.

  • Can not save .gif files & My Virus protection software found a virus in your program

When ever I try to Save a .gif image, the upper bar populates with the image imformation, but the lower bar is completely empty, and offers no options. • Virus protection on imac?

I have read several times that you should have virus protection on the imac.  I have not done that.  Is it important to do?

    Agree with Allan.
There's really no benefit of having any virus s/w at this time. There are no known viruses in the wild for Mac, and when (note I say 'when' not 'if') there is, none of the current AV software will be able to detect it until after the fact.
We may one day be in a situation where AV s/w is necessary but given Apple's fairly aggressive stance with the App Store and GateKeeper (coming to ML), I wouldn't bank on that being any day soon.
As always, the best defence against malware is your own commonsense. Stick to tried and trusted sites, keep Java off or only on for sites that absolutely require it, and investigate any unsual behaviour you notice on your computer immediately (such as by posting on ASC for advice).
If you really must install some AV s/w, use nothing other than the free ClamXav, which seems to cause less problems than other AV s/w (aside from costing your nothing).

  • Virus protection for iMac-Leopard

There seems to be a divergence of opinion, in general, regarding the need for virus-protection software for Mac. ( I used Intego Internet Security with my previous machine- 15" Flat Screen with Tiger.)
The local Apple Store regarding the subject would say neither yes nor no.
(I only talked to a salesman, though.)
If there is a technically well-informed reader of this message, would you kindly answer the questions: a), is virus protection necessary; and b), if it is, would Intego be the way to go - if not, what would you suggest?

Another vote for ClamXav, a wonderful protection for Mac. mtatmc is 110% right. Antivirus/antimalware protection is not just thinking about yourself and your computer, it is about thinking about everybody's safety when browsing this internet. It's not just about infecting your own computer, but passing it over to your friends' computers, to your family members' computers etc. Of course, no one wants that to happen.
Maybe there are not so many viruses/trojans in the wild like there are for PCs, but don't be fooled... it is not thanks to Unix nor because Unix is safer than anything else out there... Nothing is bullet-proof and everything can be broken. It is just because PCs are a lot more popular than Macs, and attackers found them a lot more interesting to attack. Things are changing though and we have to be careful about this. Macs are becoming popular more and more, by the day... and it is just a question when these nasties will hit us. There are already some nasty trojans for the Macs in the wild, and you don't want to take any chances.
Besides ClamXav, there is avast! antivirus for Mac recently released. It is one of the best antiviruses out there, but it is not free... and the biggest problem, Mac version has some issues, some bugs that still need to be fixed. I am a long time avast! user on my PC, but on my Mac, I use ClamXav and I am not even sure if I will switch to anything else.
Another little thing... download and install DNS changer removal tool, it is a must have.

  • Is there a virus protection software available for the ipad 2?

IS there any form of virus protection softward available for the ipad 2? Have seen AVG etc for ipad 2 talked about.

It's not strictly correct to say there are no viruses or to be more accurate 'malware' for i-devices as there are
There isn't. Provide links/proof if there are.
If you really are an admin for McAfee then you should know what a virus is, and that there are none for iOS. If there were a virus for iOS it would be all over the news. It is also true to say there is no malware for stock iOS devices. If you've jailbroken your device, then maybe so, but you've purposefully put yourself at risk.
hence the last 2 iOS updates which were patching various vulnerabilities.
Yes, just like any OS, there have been vulnerabilities that, potentially, could be used for malware purposes, but iOS has been available for over 4 years and still not one virus or malware breakout. If you knew anything about the way iOS works, and how apps get approved, installed and run, you would know why a virus is virtually impossible, and even a trojan is very unlikely.
Apple has a policy of never discussing security issues as they like to pretend that their products are totally immune, but they aren't.
Like lots of companies, Apple don't discuss security vulnerabilities BEFORE they are fixed, because that would be irresponsible and make it easier for hackers to exploit. Apple have never pretended their products are totally immune. Use your brain, if Apple thought their products were immune, why would they release regular security updates?
Companies like McAfee make money out of spreading FUD and making people believe they have to fork out lots of money for so-called "protection" that in most cases they don't need and doesn't work for unknown issues anyway. And now they're trying to prey on uninformed Windows users, who after years of being subjected to the real threat of viruses and malware now think they need the same for iOS devices.

  • General Mac Housekeeping and Virus Protection

My MBP is my first foray into the world of Mac computing ever (well, not counting playing Oregon Trail back in 3rd grade on an ancient dinosaur of a mac haha) and so far it's been a positive experience. The CPU fan pretty much self-destructed, but it's being repaired as we speak, so no worries.
My question is this. As a lifetime Windows user (and until getting my MacBook, proponent of it being BETTER than Mac OS... boy did I learn my lesson) I used to commonly have to perform a lot of general housekeeping tasks, such as running the defrag utility, virus scanning, spyware scanning, disk cleanup, etc etc, and so on. Is this necessary in the OSX environment? Especially the virus protection software?
I neglected to purchase Norton Internet Security because it wasn't universal, but our PC's have always fallen pray to worms and viruses. I know Mac's are supposed to be amazing against viruses (a la the Mac vs. PC commercials) but is some virus and spyware protection necessary?
Anyway, my question got a lot more long winded than I planned and I SHOULD be working now, but hey, State workers are SUPPOSED to slack off, right? =P

OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility called Macaroni that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    4. SuperDuper (Commercial)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - not universal binary.)
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Virus protection for the iPhone?

Wondering about the need and availability of anti-virus, etc. protection for iPhones (4).
I'm a long time Apple/Mac user but wondering how pre-emptive a person needs to be re this protective measure.
    Thanks,

There are no viruses for (non-hacked) iPhones, therefore no virus protection needed. There are also no iPhone anti-virus apps that are any use (the only one the does exist is useless).

  • Is virus protection needed for iMacs?

Is virus protection needed for iMacs?

There are some highly experienced people here running Sophos free who say it's just fine. A lot of this talk here is urban mythology.
I'm not sure I qualify as highly experienced but I've run Sophos Home Edition almost since the day it was released on multiple Macs & I have had zero problems with it. I've even tried to duplicate the few reports of specific issues with it as best I can, but unfortunately almost none of the reports are from direct, firsthand experience. When I ask for details, I get evasive or incomplete answers, making it impossible for me to do much in that respect.
One thing I've noticed about many of those denouncing any & all commercial Mac AV software is a tendency to blame it for any problem they see without doing much if anything to try to verify that assumption. Another is that many of these folks don't seem to know much about how these apps can or should be configured, or how that can affect their operation.
But most of all, it seems to be an article of near religious faith for some Mac users that this kind of software is completely & absolutely unnecessary, downright evil, always a scam, etc. & react to any comment about that being overly simplistic as if it was heresy.
Please make no mistake: I'm not trying to tell anybody if they should run AV software on their Mac. I'm just suggesting that not all AV apps should be judged as if they were the same, nor should a few scattered or vague reports of issues with any particular app be considered as meaning it has or deserves a bad reputation. (If that were true, you could say the same of almost any app, to say nothing of every version of OS X or update for it Apple has ever released!)
All that said, Norton & MacKeeper (not to be confused with the MacDefender malware) do not have great reputations (for different reasons) & probably should not be serious contenders for anyone considering an AV app for their Mac. ClamXav is the most often recommended one, & as MadMacs0 mentioned, you might want to consider the newest full 2.0 version (not the app store one) if you want background scanning. It is not quite the same thing as say Sophos offers in that respect, & requires somewhat more effort to set up than Sophos' 'on access' scanner, but that's the point:
One size does not fit all, so be at least a bit leery of the advice of anyone that says otherwise.
